Peanuts crack between fingers, discarded sunflower seeds give way beneath thousands of fans’ sneakers, soda gets slurped at alarming velocity between cheering and some good ol’ trash talk. The air is thick with sunshine and smoke generated by a solid month of grilling hot dogs. Spring training holds this austere sense of tradition for me, even though I didn’t spend every March of my childhood cross-legged on the lawn, hoping for a fly or foul. I didn’t grow up around spring training, but Phoenix sure has. And it’s because of this tradition and economic engine, ingrained in the metro since 1947, that many of us like to refer to the Cactus League Spring Training season as the “most wonderful time of the year.” When Cactus League Spring Training is in full swing, fifteen teams play at 10 fields around the Valley every single day for over a month. Each ballpark is a short drive from another, officially making Phoenix Metro the largest concentration of professional baseball facilities in the U.S. A lesser known fact about spring training: It’s the leading reason for locals’ extended lunch breaks every March. Guilty as charged. For the first time since the late ‘70s, the league’s most nomadic team, the Oakland Athletics, will return to Mesa, leaving Phoenix Municipal Stadium for former Chicago Cubs’ stomping ground at Hohokam Stadium. The park was renovated to the tune of $26.9 million. Nearing the end of its seventh decade, spring training baseball’s history is rich with stories. “Play Ball” exists to help you become a part of history, to curate your own spring training adventures. Whether you’re a native looking for a go-to league reference or a visitor from Chicago, “Play Ball” is a guide dedicated to making the most of spring training. There’s an entire league schedule on page 8 and guides to the best places to eat, play and stay near your team’s home field. Hold the relish,

spring training game than you might realize. From etiquette to preand post-game bonuses, read these tips and tricks — just to ensure you’ve covered all your bases!
Foul
• Don’t ask for autographs if you are an adult. • Don’t call an ump a ref. We know football is still fresh in everyone’s mind, but it’s time to get your head in the ballgame!
• Get to the games early. You don’t want to miss batting practice, and you want good seats and good parking. (Note: Some teams hold workouts after a game, too.)
• Don’t push little kids out of the way for a fly ball. • Don’t only go to games; Enjoy the rest of the Greater Phoenix Area while in town. (See stadium pages for our suggestions of nearby places to eat, play and stay.)
• Know the stadium. Is parking free? Do the concession stands accept plastic? Does the home team always sit along the 1st base line, or does it switch at so-and-so stadium?
• Don’t wear clothes or jerseys in support of a team that’s not playing. You don’t have to root for the home team, but it’s tacky to support one that isn’t even in the dugout.
• Have the supplies you need to beat the weather: sunglasses and sunscreen. Sitting outside for a few hours can be hard even for a native Arizonan. • Drink water. The sun and a cold beer are a winning combination until you get heat stroke. Stay hydrated with a water between drinks.
A I D
• Trash talk is okay within reason. Half the fun of going to the ballpark is portraying pride in your team.

Los Angeles Dodgers
When the White Sox moved from Florida in 1998, they helped christen Tucson Electric Park with the Diamondbacks, creating the league’s second shared facility. Their arrival also created a great crosstown spring training rivalry with the Cubs in Mesa. Games between the two teams continue to be among the league’s biggest draw.
The Dodgers have provided two of the biggest surprises in baseball — both nationally and locally. First, they left Brooklyn in 1958 and moved to the West Coast. Then almost as surprising as their move from Brooklyn to L.A. was their departure from their long-time “Dodgertown” spring training home in Vero Beach, Fla., to Camelback Ranch in Glendale in 2008.

Baseball’s first professional team became the Cactus League’s latest addition in 2010, joining the Cleveland Indians in Goodyear. A charter member of the American Association, the Reds joined the National League in 1890 and have the longest professional lineage of any current major league team.
The Indians are the Cactus League’s prodigal son. They returned to Arizona in 2009 after a 16-year hiatus in Florida, moving to the West Valley city of Goodyear. Prior to their departure at the conclusion of the 1992 Cactus League season, the Indians spent 45 springs at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.
DID YOU KNOW: The 1998 season was all about brotherly love for the Reds. They started brothers Barry and Stephen Larkin at shortstop and first base, and Bret and Arron Boone at second and third bases.

OAKLAND ATHLETICS The Oakland Athletics are one of the Cactus League’s most nomadic teams. In 1969, one year after relocating from Kansas City (after starting in Philadelphia) the Athletics moved its spring training operations from Bradenton, Fla., to Rendezvous Park in Mesa. The A’s left Rendezvous Park to move into a new Hohokam Park in 1977, played at Scottsdale Stadium in 1979, and in 1984 moved to Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Hohokam Stadium has been the location for a few Major League Baseball spring training records. In 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009 the Chicago Cubs set various attendance records
at the ballpark. Hohokam, which hosted the Chicago Cubs’ games until 2013, has been razed or demolished twice since 1952. The stadium, renovated throughout 2014 in anticipation of the Oakland Athletics’ movein, featured the work of HOK Architects, which has also designed Baltimore’s Camden Yards, Cleveland’s Jacobs Field and Coors Field in Denver. The Oakland A’s have a 20-year agreement with the ballpark.

Seattle Mariners
One of four expansion teams to join Major League Baseball in 1969, the Padres set up spring training camp in Yuma. Despite the distance, they held spring training in Yuma for 25 years before entering into their current partnership with the Seattle Mariners and the city of Peoria at the Peoria Sports Complex. DID YOU KNOW: Just behind the right field fence at Petco Park, home to the Padres, there is a white sand beach.
The Mariners are the fourth expansion team to begin play in the Cactus League before playing an official major league game. They called Tempe Diablo Stadium home before permanently moving into the Peoria Sports Complex in 1994. Sharing that facility with the San Diego Padres, the two started a trend by becoming the first pair to share a spring training facility.
E M
DID YOU KNOW: The only time two perfect games occurred at the same stadium during the same year was in 2012 at Seattle’s Safeco Field — a first in Mariners history. The Mariners are also one of two teams to never play in a World Series.

Eat El Chorro
A lodge, once frequented by Clark Gable and John Wayne, was converted into a restaurant in the late ‘30s. Situated at the base of Camelback and Mummy mountains, the setting is as sublime as the menu.
Arizona Diamondbacks The Diamondbacks enjoy the distinction of being the Cactus League’s only home team. They started spring training in the Old Pueblo in 1998, sharing Tucson Electric Park with the Chicago White Sox. They opened spring training in 2002 as World Series champs after beating the New York Yankees in a memorable 7-game series. DID YOU KNOW: According to a poll by teammarketing.com, the cheapest place, out of all the MLB teams’ fields, to buy beer and a hot dog is at the D-Backs’ Chase Field. This past season it cost $5.50.
As Major League Baseball continued to expand, it also fueled the Cactus League’s growth. The Rockies joined the National League and played at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. In 2008, the Rockies opened spring training as World Series runners-up, after being swept by the Boston Red Sox.

SLOAN Park After calling Hohokam Stadium in Mesa home away from home for nearly four decades, the Chicago Cubs ran the bases of its new spring training facility last season. Fashioned after Wrigleyville in Chicago, Sloan Park contains amenities meant to remind fans of the Windy City ball park. The Rangers represented the A.L. in the fourth All-Cactus League World Series against the Giants in 2010.
