General Store Everything but the kitchen sink

‌I

SUZANNE ADAMS-OCKRASSA

n 2017, Heidi Kruger brought a bit of home to downtown Flagstaff. Kruger’s Flagstaff General Store, the shop that she started with her mother and husband, began in an unassuming building just outside of town on Highway 89 in 2014. The growing business eventually brought her to the hustle and bustle of downtown. From the outside, the shop—tucked into the historic Raymond building next to Alpine Pizza on Leroux Street—looks small. But once inside, the incredibly deep building features a kaleidoscope of vintage furniture, signs, home décor, books, art, kitchen stuff, jewelry, candles, kitsch, soaps and canned foods. Kruger also carries paint from Anne Sloan that she uses to refurbish many of the tables and other unique pieces of furniture in the store. Most of the new items come from more than 35 local artists, from woodworkers to painters and candle and soap makers. Each artist has to apply to have their items sold and displayed in the store, Kruger said in a 2017 interview. The store staff vote on each artists’ work to determine if it’s the right fit for the store. If it’s not the right fit, Kruger said she usually suggests other stores or locations that the artist might consider. “It’s really a team effort,” she said. The store was modeled on the small town general stores Kruger’s mom grew up with. These types of stores carried a little bit of everything: hardware supplies, food, décor, etc. “We just wanted to start with simple stuff,” Kruger said of the store’s mix of new and used items, furniture and items made by local artists. She said they decided to focus on local artists because there’s “so much talent in town” and they wanted to support those artists. The trio also wanted a mix of local artists, not just painters, but potters and sign makers and woodworkers, something that would showcase the variety of art that’s made in town. In its current location, the store gets steady foot traffic and tourists shopping for knickknacks and small gifts to take home. At the old location on Highway 89, the clientele was more local and looking for the perfect item to finish decorating their kitchen or bedroom. Kruger said a number of people encouraged her to move the store downtown and the downtown business community has been very welcoming.

ecause the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce believes that a healthy business climate and a thriving community are inseparable, we ask you to play your part by buying local. The most prosperous and inviting communities across our great land are those with many small, locally owned businesses that give their communities a distinct character and flair. Sound like Flagstaff? Well it is! For many years, the Chamber has supported and promoted the SHOP LOCAL campaign because we know that the lifeblood of our small business community relies on a high volume

of consumers taking advantage of the great products they provide. If you’re like me, you like choices, and small businesses offer unique and diverse items that really cannot be found in other types of stores. You don’t have to leave Flagstaff to find top notch retailers, great deals and exceptional customer service. When we buy local, we are helping out businesses that provide a valuable tax base for the government and much-needed jobs for local residents. In addition to providing a tax base for city services like street repairs, fire protection and trash collection, small businesses provide a tremendous amount of support to nonprofits, too. It’s obvious that everything we’re looking for cannot always be found in Flagstaff, but before you

go out of town or look online, please check to see what’s available in your hometown first. There’s great value shopping here in your backyard. Now more than ever, with labor rates rising, businesses need to feel confident that they can keep their doors open with a larger consumer base, not a smaller one. Keeping your dollars local will add to the prosperity of our community and our quality of life which we all enjoy. If you were to go to a community down in the Valley or elsewhere to do your shopping, you would be elevating their economy. The Chamber asks you to stay put and shop here to elevate our local economy. Lots of great local businesses cater to outdoor clothing, cycling and running gear, river running, snowboarding, skiing, you name it. Thanks to Flagstaff’s great climate, it’s easy to find gear for all four seasons of the year. In fact, per capita, Flagstaff is said to have more outdoor gear stores than any other city according to Kathleen Bryant in her adventure guide book “Moon Grand Canyon.”

hen Mark and Mary Schroeder met in high school, he was a junior at Flagstaff High School and she was a sophomore at Coconino. Thirty years later they’re married, have two kids and, as of this past spring, run their own business. Java Juice Café opened April 1 and is the newest addition to the Flagstaff shopping plaza that also houses local Arizona businesses Bookmans and Sprouts. The shop specializes in sweet vegan treats. Schroeder and his wife have chosen to avoid meat and dairy products for 20 years, he said, and everything they sell keeps to that standard including juices, smoothies, ice cream, crepes and coffee. Organic food and drink is prominent at Java. “We had been looking to do something healthy like this, something that is vegan and designed to keep people on the healthier side of life,” Schroeder said. The shop’s soft-serve ice cream is made with a coconut base instead of milk or cream, and whipped creams and coffee additives use almond or coconut milk. The juices are made using fresh ingredients and nearly everything is made in house, Mary said. This includes vegan baked goods, ice cream cones, waffles and crepes. “Plus, I think our boba tea is the best in Arizona,” Mark said. In opening the business, the couple has made sure to test all the recipes they develop before they hit the mouths of customers. Even their kids, 13-year-old Eric

The walls of Java Juice Café are as bright as the menu, which features a huge selection including drinks, crepes and bubble waffles. and 11-year-old Jonathan, have helped to create and perfect several of the recipes, fine-tuning them to perfection. “I give all the credit to my beautiful wife and kids,” Mark said. Currently, apart from the Schroeder’s children, Java Juice Cafe has six employees. Business has been good and steady according to the Schroeders. “The positive feedback from customers is that they can enjoy and feel great about themselves. I think we’re offering something that can bring joy to somebody,” Mark said.

We have over 10 years of experience in the field of product development, manufacturing engineering, prototyping and experimental design and development. Team members bring seven years of experience in firearms manufacturing industry, as well as project specialist roles, teaching manufacturing engineering to university students and advising senior students on capstone projects. We also have 20 years of machine operational experience.

The crepes are the most popular menu item, he said, especially with kids—both his own and those of customers. Second-most popular is the soft-serve, according to Mark. The family is doing its best to make the menu affordable, something that can be a challenge for vegan restaurants, which often require a higher overhead than their meat and dairy alternatives. “A lot of times you’ll go and get vegan things and it’ll cost you 25 to 30 dollars just for two desserts,” Mark said. “We’re slightly above other dessert places, but are

trying to keep it affordable while providing the highest quality product we can. People have been grateful, happy and supportive overall.” And, in homage to Peak Sweets and Popcorn, whose former space Java Juice Café is now leasing, the couple has kept the puffy, crunchy treat on the menu. There are 20 flavors of popcorn to choose from, and while most of the popcorn toppings are vegan, there are several that are not. Same goes for some of the boba tea flavors. “We make sure to mark everything so people know what is and isn’t vegan,” Mark said. Java Juice Café is located at 1530 S. Riordan Ranch St. The vegan dessert spot is open daily from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. during the summer.

aturdays are for shopping. Locally, that is. The monthly Flagstaff Urban Flea Market, now in its fourth year, provides a venue for a variety of wares such as antiques, vintage clothing, used tools, comics, books, toys, jewelry, records, woodwork and leather work, skincare products and more. This first-of-its-kind event in Flagstaff was imagined by Heather and Art Babbott, who wanted to keep the weekly Sunday Flagstaff Community Market true to its agricultural roots while acknowledging artisans’ desire for a similar space that connects creatives with the public. “I think the Urban Flea Market is different than what people have in their minds about a flea market,” Heather explained in a 2016 interview. “It makes it really accessible to most people, and that’s what we do with the Farmer’s Market, too.” Taking place every second Saturday through October, Flagstaff Urban Flea Market is the perfect place to get those funky fresh, one-of-a-kind Flagstaff finds. The July flea market will be held July 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the parking lot in front of Flagstaff City Hall, 211 W. Aspen Ave. Visit www.flagstaffmarket. com for more information.

More benefits of supporting

LOCAL BUSINESSES

‌O

utside of supporting the local economy and providing jobs for fellow residents, the benefits to shopping locally extend even further. Here are five reasons to keep your dollars local.

It’s a movement

The Shop Local movement has been steadily gaining steam. SCORE, a nonprofit partnered with the U.S. Small Business Administration, found that 90 percent of Americans shop at local businesses at least once a week, and 42 percent do so three or more times a week. These small businesses are run by your neighbors and they employ your neighbors. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, 67

percent of jobs in the United States come from small businesses. By sticking local, your money is actually working overtime. Your dollars are getting you the things you need but they also work to get your neighbors the things that they need.

Feel good

When you purchase goods from a local vendor, you can feel happy knowing your money is going toward helping them support themselves and their family rather than a large corporation. Dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins are the feel-good chemicals produced naturally by your body when you help others.

Learn history of items

Whether you’re buying used or new items, local shop owners are likely to

know the story behind them. An artist can describe their inspiration behind a certain piece or vintage collectors can share details about the previous owner. A farmer can tell you the name of the chicken who laid the eggs for sale. You can ask where something was sourced or how it was made, and the shop owner will undoubtedly have an answer for you.

Small Business Saturday

The Small Business Administration defines a small business as one with fewer than 500 employees. Each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and Black Friday, it’s encouraged to shop small businesses for unique gifts rather than those mass produced at big box stores. Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010

and has since grown. It’s hard for these small businesses to compete with chain stores, and the American Express Shop Small campaign continues the support, encouraging people to shop and dine at local businesses year round.

Great customer service

Regular local shoppers can look forward to visiting their favorite coffee shop or boutique and seeing a familiar face as local owners tend to be more involved. Small business owners are highly invested in the success of their shops or services. This translates into making sure each customer’s shopping experience is a positive one. Plus, if you have any questions, you are more likely to get a knowledgeable answer and may even develop a rapport with the owner.
