THE CAMPAIGN FOR NAU
Learn how a $100 million campaign is recommitting to the core values of student success, faculty excellence and institutional research.
It’s a great day to be a Lumberjack Dear Flagstaff Alumni and Friends,
Dear Readers,
We are proud of our local alumni and their contributions to the Flagstaff Community, and chose to honor them with this special edition of the Arizona Daily Sun. We have more than12,300 alumni in Coconino County, the second largest alumni population in Arizona next to Maricopa County. Thank you for participating in this project to spotlight our local talent. We are all part of the Northern Arizona University family and I thank you for staying in touch, and staying local. Our goal is to meet the needs of our more than 139,000 strong alumni population. The NAU Alumni Association has a board of directors comprised of influential community members, working diligently to improve the alumni experience. You can read more about the NAU Alumni Association Board of Directors on page 7. I appreciate the thoughtful leadership from members Heidi Hansen, ’91, and Steve Peru, ’79 & ’90, who were instrumental in bringing this print edition to you today. They serve on the Outreach Committee and both live and work here in beautiful Flagstaff. Our first and foremost focus is engaging our alumni. You can stay connected through social media channels, the digital publications PINE and Facetime Class Notes and alumni events. Between our Facebook page and LinkedIn group, we reach more than 35,000 alumni and friends. We proudly hosted 72 events in 2013. If you prefer in-person connections, check our website (nau.edu/alumni) for up-to-date events. Volunteering for the NAU Alumni Association is another way to stay involved. Whether your interests lie in recruiting future Lumberjacks by becoming a member of the Volunteer Alumni Network or being a guest speaker and mentoring students on campus through the ENCORE Program, our volunteer programs are personalized to include something for everyone. Last year volunteers in these programs logged 420 hours of service. Whatever your connection, we look forward to staying in touch and keeping you updated with everything NAU. Together we can expand our awareness within the Flagstaff community and Northern Arizona University. Be sure to visit us online or stop by our Welcome Center in Old Main. Sincerely, Georgette E. Vigil Director of Alumni Relations and Community Outreach

NAU Alumni
We were asked to share with you how this NAU Local Alumni publication came about. Brainstorming ways to engage our local alumni and the idea emerged to have something that recognizes our Flagstaff-area alumni and catches them up on NAU. We also wanted to recognize the efforts of the NAU Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni Relations in cultivating local relationships with our graduates. We not only wanted to create something with shelf life, but something that would be shared and distributed amongst new graduates, parents and family, current students, community members, and of course, our alumni. The concept of a special tabloid publication was born. We met with the Arizona Daily Sun staff and went over our concept and the details came flowing. We determined the best content for this publication would be to share the memories of our alumni. That, combined with NAU Alumni Relations updates and events, would surely create a must-read piece. The advertising from local businesses not only helped to produce the publication, but gave these companies a way to recognize their alumni employees. Our publication schedule coincides with Commencement; we wanted to share with new graduates and their families and friends the wealth of professional opportunity in our community. Copies of this special section will be distributed before and after the spring ceremonies to remind our graduates that life in Flagstaff doesn’t have to end with graduation. Thank you for picking up this publication or reading it online. Our little idea grew larger than we could have imagined and we are so proud to share the accomplishments of local businesses and the more than 160 alumni who submitted their profiles. It’s so great to be able to share the memories of our alma mater. GO JACKS! TRUE BLUE! Sincerely, Heidi Hansen, ‘91 NAU Alumni Association Board Member Steve Peru, ’79 & ‘90 NAU Alumni Association Board Member
One of my favorite memories while attending NAU was living at the Lake Mary Trailer Park with my then six-yearold daughter and catching a ride to south campus on her school bus when my truck wouldn’t start in the morning. Tim Kinney, LEED AP KCS President and CEO To me, the University provided a relaxed atmosphere with expert instructors, making it possible for anyone that applies themselves to achieve their goals. Northern Arizona University & Kinney Construction Services:
Partnering to Improve Our Community NAU has been one of KCS’ most valued clients for over a decade. As a company founded by a former Lumberjack and headquartered less than one mile from NAU’s north campus, KCS takes tremendous pride in being able to employ NAU graduates and utilize the skills and expertise of our team to help the University achieve its construction and sustainability goals. This vested interest strongly contributes to KCS’ desire to continue to work with the University to improve, grow, and support one of our community’s most important assets: Our Flagstaff Mountain Campus. The KCS team excitedly looks forward to many more years of partnering with the University to improve our community as we welcome new Lumberjacks to Flagstaff. KCS is a premier construction services firm, specializing in commercial building construction and renovation, civil construction, and renewable energy projects. Founded in 1999 by Tim Kinney, KCS is headquartered in downtown Flagstaff and has satellite offices in Phoenix, Cottonwood, and Bullhead City, Arizona.
The climate and terrain in Flagstaff provides for endless outdoor recreation opportunities. I am excited to live in a place where you can snowboard and mountain bike in the same weekend. My experience at NAU left a powerful impression on me, and the most important thing I learned was how to critically read and write. This served me well in law school and ever since. I’ve been married to Barbara Johnson, ’76, for 36 years and we have two children, Amanda and Blake. From 1974 until my retirement in 2012, I practiced law in Flagstaff. In 2012, I was elected Mayor of Flagstaff. I was born and raised in Yuma. I came to NAU for a summer high school journalism workshop. We stayed in the dorms and used the classrooms. I was immediately hooked on NAU and forest country. I have pretty much been in Flagstaff ever since. During my time in Flagstaff, I’ve served as president of the Northern Arizona Building Association and spent six years on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. I’ve been recognized for my service with civic organizations such as Lions Club, Goodwill Industries, SunSounds, Paws to Read and others. My goal is to make Flagstaff a great place to do business, to live and to raise children. I want to make every other city jealous!

Making a Difference, One Lumberjack at a Time Greetings NAU Alumni and Friends, The primary focus of the NAU Alumni Association Board of Directors is engaging alumni; we do this by connecting the alumni population to university initiatives. As a board we develop and implement customized engagement strategies, pilot events and participate in social media, such as our Facebook page (fb.me/NAUAlumni) or LinkedIn Group (bit.ly/NAUAlumni). Along with the NAU Alumni Relations team, we hosted 72 events for alumni and friends last year.
on our students’ experiences. The Alumni Board has developed scholarships for children of alumni, and recently created the Alumni Board Endowment for Engagement, which will shape a culture of connectivity by providing funding for future outreach efforts. Supporting these initiatives provides a meaningful way to contribute to the philanthropic goals and needs of the university.
To strengthen the NAU brand, we serve as university ambassadors and volunteers, encouraging and cultivating traditions, recognizing and rewarding successful alumni and promoting lifelong relationships. We are always seeking support for our volunteer groups VAN and ENCORE (nau.edu/Alumni/Volunteer/) and we also invite you to nominate an outstanding alumnus or alumna by visiting our Alumni Awards page (https://nau.edu/ Alumni/Awards/).
We invite you to learn more (nau.edu/Alumni/About-Us/) about the NAU Alumni Association Board of Directors or read our individual bios (nau.edu/Alumni/Meet-Board-ofDirectors/) online. We salute our five Flagstaff board members: Debbi Grogan, ’90, Heidi Hansen, ’91, Carol Lindsay, ’61, Bob Orrill, ’80, and Steve Peru, ’79 & ’90. Go Lumberjacks!
We are doing our part to build new avenues for board engagement and to share the opportunities and results of giving. Together with your support, we can make an impact

NAU has played a very significant role in my personal and professional life. As a teacher and administrator I have the opportunity to share my unwavering optimism about public education and passion for learning. I am extremely fortunate to have a career that offers the opportunity to positively impact the lives of young people. I was raised in San Diego, California and came to Flagstaff in 1979 to attend NAU. I’ve been married to Martin Zanzucchi for 30 years, and we have four children and one grandchild. We choose to call Flagstaff home because of the beautiful mountain setting and fresh air, as well as the star-filled night sky. We enjoy the “college town” feel and the sophistication and class that comes along with that. We ski, golf, hike and sit on our deck surrounded by huge Ponderosa Pine trees. Flagstaff is a great town with quality public schools and a healthy, family-oriented community. It has been a joy to raise four children and watch them find meaning and purpose in life, in love and service as happy and successful adults.

One that’s tossed out the canned formulas and red tape and in its place positioned highly-skilled decision makers, empowered to be innovative. Vested in the communities we serve, we’re proud to keep the cash flowing to local companies to buy the equipment, expand the staff and open the locations that keep Flagstaff growing. NAU Memory: NAU helped me make key life choices. I fell in love with Flagstaff, made it my home, married my college sweetheart, had kids and now run a local business. NAU helped me find it all.
Class of ‘91 Going to NAU changed my life – I had an opportunity to meet life-long friends, learn about myself and discover where I want to live and how I want to make a difference with my life. After earning my degree in Journalism, I was fortunate to work in that field for 18 months, which taught me a lot about being independent, responsible and sociallyaware. Thanks to the AmeriCorps program at NAU, I became a volunteer with the American Red Cross. That experience led me into working in the non-profit sector and I am so very fortunate to have a job I love. I manage a HUD-approved nonprofit housing organization which helps families create safe, decent and affordable homes and to become financially secure. I have been married for seven years to my husband Greg. We have two wonderful and rambunctious boys. Riley is almost four and Hunter is two. My folks retired to Flagstaff several years ago and live within walking distance from us. My brother and his family also relocated here about 10 years ago.

Only at NAU moments Despite passage of time and distances journeyed from Flagstaff, our alumni continue to remind us of their connection to NAU, and these recollections serve to unite future generations of Lumberjacks. Whether it was mentorship received from an influential faculty member, or a rush of inspiration grasped with an exclamation of “Aha!” during a lecture, there are life-altering moments that forever transformed perceptions and possibilities. Even today, students are sharing these same experiences, embarking on a path that is individually unique, yet somehow familiar to those who have come before. We call these shared experiences Only at NAU moments, because they couldn’t have happened anywhere else. Please submit your Only at NAU moment and tell us how your time at the university made a difference in your life. Visit http://nau.edu/Campaign/Share/ to share your story and help raise awareness for the Campaign for NAU.

Lumberjack Alumni Ambassadors
Photos by David Slipher
S
ince the founding of the Lumberjack Alumni Ambassadors (LAA) in 1992 by a group of enthusiastic and ambitious students, our members have worked to create a connection between past and current students. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for involvement, continuing the NAU spirit on campus and positively impacting the Flagstaff community through volunteer work. Each fall we work to make Homecoming a success. Not only do we sell the official homecoming t-shirts, but we host an event for students, with a growing turnout every year. A club favorite service project is Trick-or-Treat for canned goods, which are donated to Louie’s Cupboard—the new campus food bank to support students.
Last month, LAA hosted a Canoe Battleship Tournament to raise funds for one of the only student-funded scholarships in the state of Arizona, which is awarded to a deserving NAU upperclassman. We are active in Relay for Life and have assisted the Alumni Office with events such as the Campaign for NAU Gala and Fan Fest tailgate activities. We end the semester by coordinating the games and activities at Flagstaff’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Picnic. Year after year, LAA has succeeded in building positive relationships within both the NAU and Flagstaff communities. We look forward to continuing our involvement in the future.
Respectfully, Beth Bourget ’02, Volunteer Coordinator and LAA Student Group Advisor, NAU Alumni Relations

The Campaign for NAU On October 18, 2013 the university officially launched a $100 million fundraising campaign – a campaign that has raised nearly $62 million since 2009. Northern Arizona University committed to this endeavor in order to ensure that the traditions of more than 100 years will be preserved for future generations. These are traditions that have defined the identity of Lumberjacks for generations– traditions such as personalized relationships with faculty, access to affordable education and opportunities for academic and professional success. As a studentcentered institution, the priorities of the campaign are to grow scholarships
and programs that promote student success, support and invest in faculty excellence, strengthen research opportunities and enhance the athletics program and support of studentathletes. NAU Memory: At NAU I enjoyed the small classes, diverse classes, and inspiring professors. I got to study abroad in Strasbourg, France and return to a beautiful mountain town.
Class of ‘10 NAU, more than anything, has taught me the importance of a tightknit, yet incredibly diverse community. The compassion that educators have for their students, and peers have for each other, will stay with me for life. I am focused on promoting childhood outreach with students and educators involving K-12 classroom effectiveness, behavioral development and college readiness. I have helped school districts and higher education institutions around the Southwest integrate technology into their curriculums to better prepare students for the workforce. I live in Flagstaff with my wonderful wife, Meghan, and our Golden Retriever, Kenzie. I love Flagstaff for the heavy focus on community, small town feel, laid-back attitude and grandeur of the natural environment. In 2013, my wife Meghan, a group of friends and colleagues and I established the Southwest Kids’ Cancer Foundation. SWKCF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing children affected by cancer an opportunity to partake in a traditional summer camp experience at Arizona Camp Sunrise and Sidekicks. We appreciate the opportunity to help these kids celebrate life, build camaraderie with their peers and ensure they live a fulfilled life after overcoming cancer.
