Roux 66 handles Satchmo’s catering needs and serves as a test kitchen for new dishes, and the Grand Canyon Spice and Food Company does all the spice blending to create bold flavors. “That’s been a huge asset,” Thousand said. “It lightened the load a little and allowed the kitchen crew to stay focused on the guests coming through the door.” Some of Satchmo’s guests, especially those visiting from out of town, have told Thousand or left reviews saying that when they saw the outside of the restaurant, they reconsidered coming in, but THE BEST

It’s smoky-sweet with a touch of spice and fresh notes from the Italian liqueur, cilantro and lime—cool and stylish. This summer, in concert with Tinderbox and Lowell Observatory, Annex developed a cocktail to celebrate the Great American Eclipse. The Great American Eclipse cocktail was made with an American gin and garnished with a brûléed orange wheel on the rim of the glass. Representing the moon shadow was a sphere of ice containing a fig in its center. It’s apparent that Flagstaffians appreciate this storytelling approach to cocktail concoctions, Annex took first in the new cocktail category in this year’s Best of Flag. Alongside its creative drinks, Annex offers a warm, cozy lounge and an outdoor patio. It also matches its drinks with food offerings from the chefs at Tinderbox and Tourist Home All Day Café. Williams said the aim is to provide a cocktail experience on the level of well-known San Francisco, New York or Chicago establishments, bringing a sophisticated approach while still keeping it unpretentious, personal and inviting.

dad,” said Jim. “You know, kids see their dad play baseball or something. My dad was in the martial arts sometime in the mid to late 1. Maximum Martial ‘60s, and I wanted to do that.” Arts At age seven, Jim started training with 2. Gracie Barra his father in the martial art of Shotokan Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Karate. When he turned 19, he received Self Defense his first-degree black belt and opened his 3. Sacred Mountain first martial arts school in 1986 in Waseca, Fighting and Healing Arts Minn. In June 1998, the Ginters relocated to Flagstaff where they opened up the first Maximum Martial Arts studio on Fourth Street. After a few relocations, they found their home in 2005 on Historic Route 66 just east of downtown. “Because we’re family owned, we really wanted to get families involved,” Jim explained. “Sometimes I’ll get parents who I taught almost 20 years ago who bring their kids to my class! … We’ll get four-year olds to 64-year olds. It depends on how much you want to do and how disciplined you are.” Maximum Martial Arts teaches three disciplines: Tae kwon do, kickboxing and krav maga. And at Maximum Martial Arts, discipline is key. Centered above a wall-sized mirror is the phrase, “Discipline the mind … and the body will follow.” “I tell my students [the phrase] is more than a motto; it’s a lifestyle. If you tell yourself you can, you will. If you tell yourself you can’t, you won’t. It all starts with attitude. Attitude determines your altitude. I wish I made it up,” Jim said with a laugh. “But I think I heard it at my old school in Minnesota.” For nearly two decades, Maximum Martial Arts has offered the best in self-defense and martial arts training, and Jim says he owes it all to the instruction and customer service of his workers and the people of Flagstaff. “You know people come and go and we’ve had a lot of people work here over their years, but they’ve all been the most fantastic instructors. We’ve been really blessed and we’re extremely grateful that Flagstaff has embraced us into their community.” Martial Arts Training

Gilbert said. “We offer an old-style banking feel to our members that I think has been lost.” Part of that feel is making sure human tellers are always there to help members who come into the bank, even though the trend is toward mobile and online banking, she said. “We’re here if people need us and if they want to do it online, we’re there as well.” The credit union also tries to greet people in the lobby to make them feel welcome and, when the customer sits down with a banker, “we try to get to know the person in front of us,” Gilbert said. OneAZ also makes a point to give back in many ways. The credit union’s foundation has a scholarship and grant program for local students and each branch
is able to choose a winner in each category. Similarly, each branch is able to choose two nonprofits in town each year to receive a monetary donation from the credit union’s foundation “We get to be involved in our communities,” Gilbert said. “It’s refreshing to know this credit union cares about all of the community.” Speaking of communit y, OneAZ is a big supporter of Northern Arizona University as well. The downtown branch is decked out in NAU flags, logos and posters and Gilbert said the credit union is a sponsor of university athletics. OneAZ has two branches in Flagstaff, one downtown and one on the east side, with a total of about 30 employees between the two. In total, the credit union has 22 branches across Arizona.

With Gossip Girl Salon relatively new to Flagstaff, Brooks is already getting encouragement from her clients to expand the shop into multiple locations. For Brooks, however, smaller is better, and she likes having her shop as it is now. “I like keeping it small and personal,” she says. “People are always saying we should expand, but I just want to keep it where it’s at, for now at least. I think what makes us unique is that we’re more low-key. We’re not corporate, and we make [the salon] our own. We add our own touch. Including me, there are only three other hairdressers. We’re like this little family.” Gossip Girl Salon offers traditional salon services such as haircuts, manicures and pedicures, as well as highlights and ombre and balayage hair color treatments. “This is the absolute best hair salon in flagstaff,” writes one review on Facebook. “The girls are so friendly and are 100% about their customers.” With over 40 five-star reviews on Facebook and Yelp, Gossip Girl Salon is helping to shape Flagstaff’s beauty one snip at a time..

Rescue Volunteers walk dogs and do leash training 3. Paw Placement of when necessary to give the pets behavioral Northern Arizona traits that potential owners are looking for. “For the cats, the socialization is huge because we have some that come in that at first look like they’re actual feral, wild cats, but with time and patience we find that they were just scared and they needed time to acclimate to shelter life,” Ryan explained. “We rely heavily on volunteers for helping to get the animals ready for adoptions.” During the course of the past fiscal year, over 1,500 people completed the association’s volunteer orientation program and almost 6,000 hours of work were logged. The Coconino Humane Association first opened in Flagstaff in 1955 and is showing no signs of slowing down. “Our adoption rates go up every year,” Ryan said. “When I started here 15 years ago, we were averaging about 1,000 adoptions a year and we’re up now, averaging about 2,500 a year.” Having more adoptions means a drop in the euthanasia rate, she said. “When I started it was about 48 percent, and now it’s about 10
percent. To have that much of an impact in 15 years is really huge.” And any instances of euthanasia that do happen are done only in cases of incurable or contagious disease such as distemper. Ryan said there have not been any cases in the past five years where they’ve had to euthanize an animal due to a lack of space. A medical program ensures that curable ailments such as broken bones can be fixed and the animal can be put into foster care until it’s ready to be adopted. The organization relies on support and donations from the community to help the facility run while keeping adoption costs as low as possible. All of the animals get their core vaccinations, rabies vaccine, microchips, 30 days of pet insurance and they are spayed or neutered to prevent more unwanted animals. Last year, the organization was able to find homes for 2,532 animals with a return rate of eight percent due to various circumstances. “Nationwide these trends are showing up in all of the shelters … adoptions are going up,” Ryan said. “Rescue is the new favorite breed, which is awesome.” Coconino Humane accepts the surrender of a pet from anywhere in the county with no judgment. The goal is simply to be a safe midway point for an animal on their way to a new forever home. “It’s not an easy decision to surrender a pet to the shelter,” Ryan said. “We just do the best we can for every animal that comes in our door.”

itself apart, the store puts a priority on training its staff and making sure they are there to truly help customers, Brackin said. Employees get about 40 hours of training per year, and each morning there’s a 15-minute briefing where staff often receive training on new or popular products. Much of the time, a store employee is stationed at the front door to greet customers. “They don’t shy away from questions or departments they know nothing about. They find the person able to help rather than let the customer roam,” Brackin said. One of HomCo’s employees has a particularly special story. The young woman, named Jaclyn, has Down syndrome and was connected with HomCo through the Flagstaff Unified School District and someone who thought a part-time job there would be good for her, Brackin said. Now, Jaclyn has worked at HomCo for more than four years. She dusts and straightens products on the shelves and has continued to work there even though she graduated from the school program. “When the minimum wage deal came down, (Jaclyn’s grandmother) thought it would cost Jaclyn her job but I said, ‘no way,’ because this means so much to her,” Brackin said. “There’s another instance of local. We’re able to do and we do those things.” The business’s local ownership also means a different customer experience, he said. “When people have problems, they call me. They know they’re not just getting a supervisor or whatever. If they have a real problem they will contact me, and I listen.”

created a nearly 80 percent increase in capacity at Flagstaff’s major winter recreation attraction, which has seen increased demand for more seats and more food and services at the lodges, Murray said. The current lodge restaurants can seat about 500 people, but a busy day can bring 3,000 or more people to the mountain, he said. “The base area hasn’t changed in nearly 30 years,” Murray said. It’s time to look at expanding services at the base of the mountain now. Those plans include the construction of a new pedestrian overpass, a temporary restaurant at the base of the Sunset chairlift, more parking, a future tubing hill and more space for restaurants and other services. The temporary Fremont Restaurant and Bar will seat around 300 people at the base of the Sunset chairlift and is due to open by Christmas. Customers will be able to ski to and from the restaurant, which will offer an alternative healthy menu full of fresh foods. A pedestrian overpass is also currently under construction. It will connect Hart Prairie Lodge with the Sunset and Grand Canyon Express chairlifts. This will allow skiers and snowboarders to travel over the top of the roadway instead of having to cross it. There are also plans to create additional parking for a future tubing area. Working with Coconino National Forest, the resort is also looking at ways to improve things for off-snow season visitors. Besides its usual off-season ski lift rides to check out the view from the mountain and enjoy the Flagstaff fall foliage, Snowbowl is looking at creating a mountain bike lift service, Murray said. The service will allow mountain bike enthusiasts to ride the ski lift with their bikes to designated trails where they can enjoy a ride in the cool mountain pines back to the base camp.
