A Word from the F
or the 2016 Best of Flag, we jump full on into our new and exciting approach to this contest that we began last year. We started in 2015 publishing the first place, second place and honorable mention winners in each category— this, after more than 25 years of only announcing the top winner. We also launched a full-color glossy winner’s edition with more stories, more backgrounds and more exploration of the winners compared to previous years. We’re back with our second edition of this robust approach. With the three tiers of winners, what we’ve found is that the different possibilities showed how all kinds of businesses, events and people could find added recognition. And it opened the possibilities. As an example, places such as LaFonda, Cottage Place and Flag Face & Body turned up in multiple categories this year. In our Best Artist section, we saw not only two celebrated and longtime artists win first and second place, but a Northern Arizona University Student, McKenzie Dankert, was named Honorable Mention in this highly
r o t i d E
competitive category. We also enjoyed seeing not only cornerstone places such as Arizona Snowbowl and Lowell Observatory win first and second place, respectively, for Best Flagstaff Attraction, but Historic Downtown was named Honorable Mention. For the readers and community at large, Best of Flag serves as a reminder of the quality of businesses, organizations, attractions and people that have come to populate and enrich our mountain town. We hope that everyone will take the time to get to know the ones that are not familiar and return to those old favorites. Congratulations to all of our winners from top to bottom. Best wishes!
Seth Muller

Mayor Wins the Vote New Flagstaff Restaurant Brings Retro Charm to Southside and Scores with Best of Flag | By the Staff

ne of our favorite “We believe the Mayor is fun categories to watch new twist on an old classic that all each year with ages can enjoy,” shared co-owner Best of Flag is Best New Brian Terpay, who operates The Restaurant. cafeteria lunch has been popular from the beginning and the homemade pizza rolls are a late night hit. We really tried to engineer the menu to stay within a lower price point.” The Mayor capitalizes on retro in many ways. With velvet lounge seating, shag carpeting and burnt orange accents, they aim to be a portal in time. Better than the garage setting in That 70s Show, The Mayor’s lounge, with Skee-Ball and a wall of vinyl and boom boxes, includes a bar and invites folks to hang out. In the enormous patio area, an elliptical, silver Airstream stands as the muse. Taps, handles and liquor outfit the converted trailer turned tavern. Beyond, strung with bulbs for all-night appeal, the living yard of couches offers unlimited sprawl space. Come in for the Happy Hour $8 burger and beer, but linger for a round
of cornhole or large-scale Jenga. The Mayor’s “glass from the past” cocktails draw on inspiration from old movies. J.L.’s Red Rocket combines Burnett vodka, SOCKO ginger beer, orange bitters and fresh lime in a glass rimmed with pop rocks for childhood kicks. Or top off the night with XXX snow cones, loaded with fruit flavors and booze. To sop up the sipping, the establishment’s executive chef keeps the pub-grub coming. Snacking among friends is easy with pizza roll-ups. A standard pie is rolled and sliced for handholds of cheese and pepperoni to smother in extra sauce. Wedge fry nachos shame chips with a base of chunky potatoes. These are seasoned before and after frying, and then, bathed in sour cream, guacamole and jalapeños plus a sidecar of beer cheese sauce. The Land Yacht does its namesake proud—a behemoth burger with cheese, greens,
tomato and hand-cut waffle potato chips within a griddled bun and a pickle spear. The sloppy Josephine with turkey and the Jenny, a quinoa burger, provide no-bull options. Relive school days from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a cafeteria lunch served on a vibrant, nostalgic tray, so nothing touches. Half a sandwich, wedge fries, salad, and of course, a rice krispie treat create the lunch we once loved. Everyone has dreams, and at The Mayor, you can run for office. Based on social media and revenue, the elected Mayor for a Month chooses a handle, a sandwich and celebrates with a gratis party for 10. The Mayor keeps each day interesting with an event, a drink and a food special. For example, Monday is Movie Night with boxed meals, beer and popcorn; Tuesday is Trivia Night; and Trailer Park Night offers homage to High Life beer. It’s a portal in time where people can meet today.

visitors alike. For this reason, they’ve tempted the taste buds of many, and have been honored as Best Dessert, a highly competitive category. “People say it all the time— they really love the diversity and uniqueness of our offerings,” Konefal said in a recent interview on the Best of Flag win. “Paola is always surprising us with something new, whether it’s French desserts like macaroons, creme brûlée and fruit tarts, or Italian treats like seven flavors of gelato or a tiramisu. Classics to innovations, she’s got it covered and that’s why people come back again and again to her pastry case.” While Fiorvanti gets the spotlight for the sweets, Konefal has been celebrated for his cooking creations—even to the point that Phoenix Magazine named the café the best place to eat in Flagstaff.
“We’re a husband and wife, owned and run company,” Konefal said. “I cook, she bakes. We came back to Flagstaff after years of cooking in Europe and the big cities of the U.S. With a forest to table approach, we’re constantly inspired by our surroundings.” For Konefal and Fioravanti, the praise received locally and beyond is the culmination of five years of hard work in a town they love. The couple met in culinary school in Italy and spent the next two years working for free at various one- and two-star-rated Michelin restaurants. “If you want to work for the best restaurants in Europe, that’s how you do it,” Fioravanti said. “It’s like an unpaid internship.” The working conditions are harsh. Employees are expected to work long hours, are often yelled at for the smallest mistakes and have maybe one day off every two weeks, Konefal said. The reality TV-show Hell’s Kitchen may seem unreal to Americans, but it’s just another day in the life of a chef in Europe. There are some perks: apprentice chefs are usually provided an apartment or place to live near the restaurant and eat with the other staff at the restaurant. They also get the experience of learning some of the finest techniques of gourmet cooking. After working for a number of restaurants in Spain and Italy,

the two returned to the U.S. and settled in San Francisco, where Koenfal worked with one top chef and then moved to New York to help the chef open his own restaurant. The couple then partnered with a group of investors to open a new restaurant in Boston in 2008, but the economic conditions weren’t right. They left the business and started the long cross-country trip back to San Francisco, stopping in Flagstaff, Konefal’s hometown, to visit his brothers. Fioravanti, who grew up in Brazil, fell in love with Flagstaff. “How can you not fall in love with this place? It’s beautiful,” she said. The couple had just enough money to open Coppa Café on Milton Road. The mission of the restaurant is to bring a piece of Flagstaff’s outdoor culinary delights inside and pair it with European cooking techniques and flavors. The couple seeks out ingredients that are unique to Flagstaff and Arizona, such as pine buds, wild mushrooms, cactus, yucca buds, ferns, fruits, pinon nuts and Arizona beef. They grow a number of fresh greens and herbs in raised beds in the small patio at the back of their restaurant. They cure a number of meats and cheese and pickle a number of
other items, such as local fruit and ferns, in storeroom next to the dining area. Koenfal has been known to forage for some of the more exotic local items from Flagstaff’s surrounding forests and catch trout for the restaurant. At the same time, the couple features more familiar items such as salads, meatballs, steak and fries, and fresh fish on their menus in order to reach those diners who might not be ready to try something so different as a clay baked duck egg with risotto.

People sometimes have a fear of gourmet food—they expect tiny portions with wild artistic flairs and high prices, Koenfal said. The couple tries to make sure Coppa’s seasonal menus include some dishes that have familiar ingredients and filling portions for customers who may not be in the mood or are not as adventurous for something so exotic. Seating is limited, so reservations are encouraged. You can reserve a seat on their website, www.coppacafe.net, on the app OpenTable or by calling the restaurant.

ne of our newer categories in Best of Flag is Best Food Truck. The food truck trend has grown into a major kind of business, and Flagstaff has been blessed with trucks serving it up in all kinds of cuisines and styles. The winner this year is GringoDillas, which has been a hot choice for many looking for a quick bite to eat. They also are turning into a downtown favorite and are on a roll as a regional food truck favorite. “We provide people 1 GringoDillas with a fun, lively and artistic Food Truck ambiance,” said GringoDillas 2 La Fonda owner Mike Godina. “Our food is 3 3's in the Trees fresh, delicious and made to order. We purchase all of our produce from the local farmers market, and we make all of our sauces and salsa from scratch.” He added, “We think people really like our concept because we created an array of really unique hot dogs and quesadillas, with fun names and flavors that take your taste-buds on a wild journey.” The truck is parked in downtown Flagstaff in the alley between Flagstaff Brewing Co. and Heritage Square. open until 3 a.m. serving up patrons who are out on the town. “We constructed a menu that enables us to make gourmet quesadillas and hot dogs in a timely fashion, while still focused on high food quality and artistic presentation,” Godina said. “We also serve gluten-free tacos and smoked pork sliders. We offer vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free options for people with food restrictions.” As for the trend of food trucks, Godina shared a few thoughts on its growth. “It’s much cheaper to build a food truck than a restaurant. With a declining economy, and lack of bank loans, it makes sense to start a food truck. It’s mobile, so you can go to where the people are, instead of having the people come to you.” He also noted, “Technology has played a huge role with the popularity of food trucks. Marketing and advertising has never been easier, and you can access young people with a push of a button.” The inspiration behind the food truck was “becoming our own bosses and trying to make a small change in the choice that people have when it comes to food,” Godina said. The business started up three-and-half years ago and has since evovled to include a Drive-Thru eatery known as GoGo’Z, on East Route 66 east of Enterprise. But the truck still drives a lot of business.

Letting the Dogs Out The Route 66 Dog Haus a Perennial Best of Flag Favorite | By the Staff

hen he was only six weeks old, Gary McElfresh passed through Flagstaff with his family on the way to San Diego from Springfield, Ill. The family was moving, and they followed a good length of Route 66 to head to the West Coast and make a new life. These days McElfresh has seen more than 40 years of business ownership on the Mother Road with his Route 66 Dog Haus. The Dog Haus story begins in 1973, when McElfresh decided he wanted to get out of San Diego and raise his four boys in a smaller town. They ended up in Flagstaff and he bought the Weinerschitzel, a fast-food hot dog franchise. McElfresh even had to attend the corporation’s “Hot Dog School” to become a franchisee. the hot dog stand on the corner as a Weinershnitzel. Then, around 15 years ago, a series of events led McElfresh to go independent, and it became the Route 66 Dog Haus. This gave him freedom with the menu. He even found the chance to create his own chili recipe. The Dog Haus primarily operates as a drive-thru, where cars follow a small passage
carved out of the long, red building. The business also has a walk-up window and tables with umbrellas. At certain times of the day, the line for the drivethru can be five or six cars long. A notable amount of the Dog Haus’s business happens before 10:30 a.m., as people line up for their famous breakfast burritos. For lunch, patrons chow on the hickory bacon dog,

the slaw dog and the Haus’s classic chili cheese dog. Brats, Chicago dogs and corn dogs also show up on the weiner lineup. The Dog Haus has a long list of hamburger options as well. McElfresh prides himself on keeping the prices reasonable while also maintaining quality. “We always make things fresh,” he said in a past interview. “We do our hot dogs made to order. We don’t make it until you order it … with the breakfast burrito, people like the size of it and that it’s so fresh. We use quality bacon and sausage. Our eggs come from the shell and not from a carton.” Along with being locally famous for its dogs and morning-time burritos, the Dog Haus — primarily as its former incarnation as Flagstaff ’s Weinerschnitzel — has had a few brushes with greatness. During the filming on location in Flagstaff of the 1981 film
“National Lampoon’s Vacation,” Chevy Chase became a regular at the hot dog stand, as he needed a quick lunch during set breaks. More famously, inspiration for the line from The Eagles song “Take It Easy” that goes, “… it’s a girl my Lord/In a f latbed Ford/Slowing down to take a look at me” happened at the Weinerschnitzel. Jackson Browne noted in an interview with Flagstaff concert promoter Matt Ziegler that the girl he wrote about was actually driving a Toyota past the Weinerschnitzel while he was hanging out there. In this sense, Flagstaff shares a hand with Winslow for the “Standin’ on the corner in Winslow, Arizona” line in the famous song. The moments of fame aside, the Route 66 Dog Haus remains a Flagstaff icon in its own right—a classic business along one of the great American highways.

Louks got the idea for a computer repair and consulting business while f lying home from a vacation. “I had stopped by a Best Buy and checked out their Geek Squad prices,” he said. “It was like $75 to $100 to connect your TV to your DVD player.” Louks figured he could do something similar for a lot less and provide better service. A number of his friends and family laughed at the idea of him starting his own business, but one high school friend, Poirier, said he wanted in on the idea. Poirier was working at Flagstaff Medical Center at the time and Louks was a deputy at the Coconino County Sherriff ’s Office. On the side, the two started Teach Me Tech in the Phoenix area, which focused mainly on setting computer systems, networks and training for local businesses. As the two worked to expand their reach, they became an Amazon Home Services Partner and Louks continued to work on his degree at Northern Arizona University. A family emergency drew Louks back to
Flagstaff. Apple requires that its service providers have grounded anti-static f loor mats and worktop mats in a locked work area, he said. Techs are also required to remove any watches, electronics or phones they may have on them and ground themselves with a special wristband before working on any Apple products. Apple places a high priority on customer service, Poirier said. Currently, Arizona Tech Advisors has a 100 percent customer service satisfaction rating with Apple. In some cases, the damage is minor and a few tweaks are needed. In other cases, the logic board of the computer must be replaced. Louks recommends that if you do spill a liquid on your computer that you shut it off and take it in immediately. Do not turn it back on. Arizona Tech Advisors also repairs PCs that run Microsoft Windows. They can install and make on-site repairs to business computers and offer private training courses. They also provide consultation services for smart home/ office device installation, computer networks and website design. “We post our prices up front,” Poirier said. “We don’t like to be surprised by prices and we don’t want our customers to be surprised either.” Pricing depends on the type of fix and the cost of the parts.

We have been told we create a unique environment.” She added, “We have had a growing number of patients share they’ve never been more excited to go to the dentist until now. That is so meaningful for us to hear. Voting for us was a way of saying ‘thank you.’ But really, the thank you goes to our dental family, our patients, for supporting us.” While all dentists are about care, Collins said her office puts extra emphasis on the importance of service and helping their patients as best as possible. “We are a service-oriented office that sets ourselves apart from most all offices. I took the oath as a dentist to take care of my patients. To us that means to work around their schedule. We open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and one Saturday a month—and occasionally Sundays—to accommodate our patients.” She continued, “We also strive to balance continuing education and technology and advances in dentistry. Very few of us are willing to put in years of continuous education, and I do that to provide the best and most comprehensive care I can possible to our patients. More importantly by learning more of each specialty it lets me know when it is appropriate to send you to a specialist.” The officer provides comprehensive dental care and services to children and adults. participating in “Dental Day” at local elementary schools and speaking to undergraduate students at the Pre-Dental Club at Northern Arizona University. “We also set up shadowing experiences for students to come to the dental office and observe,” Collins said. “We volunteer at local community events including Flagstaff ’s Give Kids A Smile, the NAU Hygiene Dental Programs annual Kiddie Clinic and Mission of Mercy in Central Arizona.” Dr. Collins moved to Flagstaff for an optional dentist residency. She later worked as an associate dentist and part-time for the NAU Dental Hygiene Program and worked full time at the Coconino County Public Health Services District Dental Clinic position as their full time dentist director. “I have always wanted to own my own practice, and I was introduced to a dentist transitioning into retirement,” she said. “I then took over his patient load and started my own practice.” Though she loves her profession, Stephanie has another exciting interest that keeps her connected to the Flagstaff area. “Rock climbing is one of my greatest passions,” she said. “My husband and I chose Flagstaff because there is endless rock climbing in northern Arizona but also in Arizona itself. It is a short driving distance from other world class climbing areas. We also wanted to find a community with potential for personal, spiritual and professional growth and a great community to live in. Flagstaff is it!” As far as her ethic, Dr. Collins said. “We are humans, naturally relational. While the market itself has grown and evolved, agents at Coldwell Banker Dallas have also seen how much has changed in terms of people educating themselves about home-buying and how the market works. Some of this comes from information on the Internet, while others pick up on ideas and expectations watching reality shows like House Hunters and similar programming on HGTV. And as far as trends? “The smart home technology is going to be increasing over the years,” McBride said. “Whether it’s the Nest Thermostat (controlled remotely through WiFi) or keyless homes, we’re seeing more of an interest in this new-home technology … More of the younger generation buyers are interested in it.” She added that Coldwell Banker will soon have a new program that will allow sellers to purchase a special package to convert their residence into a smart home before putting it on the market. stage of our improvement project is evident in the materials we selected, the menus we curated, and the local businesses we partnered with,” said Fred Reese, Little America Hotel’s General Manager. The Main Lodge and Silver Pine Restaurant & Bar showcase a careful selection of Arizona products and artwork, including Canyon Diablo Spirits, handmade copper mule mugs, ceramic art work, and photography. A fireplace adorned with chrysocolla stone, excavated in Morenci, Arizona, welcomes guests upon entry to the historic hotel. “With our updated meeting areas, our tradition of hospitality and our proximity to the Grand Canyon, Sedona and other Arizona attractions, I am excited to welcome meeting goers and vacationers to Flagstaff,” Reese said. The change is immediately obvious upon entering the lobby. Turquoise, wood and brown stone accent the space and the fireplace has been reimagined to a grander form. The renovation, which started in January, required the hotel to close the lobby, the restaurant and the gift shop. Those areas reopened Mother’s Day weekend, while the remainder of the project wrapped up in June. The restaurant renovation included
changing the name of the restaurant from Western Gold to Silver Pine, a change that Reese said signifies a change in appearance and menu selections. During the renovation, a gable was added to create a lofted look and bring in more natural light, doubling the size of the windows in the back of the restaurant, Reese said.
An outdoor seating area was also added, along with a waterfall feature, small pond and fire features. The outdoor dining space can accommodate about 50 diners. The hotel also added a separate buffet room to accommodate diners at breakfast. Little America favorites will still be available in the restaurant, like the French

onion soup and the turkey dinner, but Reese said the revamp also brought new dishes to the menu, like peppercorn crusted filet mignon and chipotle salmon. Reese said he wants Flagstaff residents to see Little America as a dining destination, where people can get high-quality food and drinks at an affordable price. “We want to see the locals eating in here.” The restaurant offers local beers on tap, including beers from Lumberyard, Beaver Street
Brewery, Historic Brewing and Mother Road Brewing. The restaurant has also been making use of local produce purchased at the farmer’s market, including fruits that can be preserved and used for desserts. While the renovation interrupted some of the hotel’s traditional holiday banquets, now that it is complete, the holiday banquets have been in full swing. The renovations to the lobby and restaurant are the first major ones since the hotel opened in
Flagstaff in 1973. The hotel is currently rated a three-diamond hotel by AAA. The hotel will continue to partner with the North Pole Experience and continue its famous holiday light display. This year, North Pole Experience participants are assembling in a newly-created meeting room, rather than the front lobby. The hotel added new meeting rooms and a board room in an area that used to be staff offices, and it redesigned existing meeting rooms and ballrooms to fit the new theme. The restrooms have also been upgraded with new mirror fixtures and color scheme. The gift shop has also been condensed after the renovation, and offers a variety of items, including Swarovski crystals, gourmet candy and a wide range of toys and stuffed animals. “We want people to still feel like it’s their home away from home,” Reese said. “Since the beginning we have always put an emphasis on providing outstanding customer service to all our guests and treating them as if they are family. This is why our motto is ‘A tradition of hospitality.’” Some portions of this article first appeared in the Arizona Daily Sun.

I’d rather climb a ladder. Flagstaff General Store a Best of Flag
Choice for Home Accessories | By Mary Ellen Hickey
M
eet Flagstaff’s very own Joanna Gaines. For the uninitiated, Gaines is the star of HGTV’s runaway hit, Fixer Upper and the Magnolia retail empire, and recent People magazine cover gal. Heidi Kruger may not yet have a television show, but she is the owner and cofounder of the distinctive Flagstaff General Store. Both 1 FLAGSTAFF Gaines and Kruger are design GENERAL STORE dynamos who reimagine, 2 COST PLUS repurpose, refurbish and WORLD MARKET recycle furnishings for homes 3 P.J. CHILCOTTAGE and businesses. And along the way, inspire many others to do the same. It’s no wonder Arizona Daily Sun readers selected Flagstaff General Store for Best Home Accessories in this year’s Best of Flag. Both are riding the current wave of design trends towards the rustic, industrial, farmhouse chic and cost-conscious DIY, which make clever use of reclaiming all kinds of wood, metal and fabric into re-imagined furnishings, decor and gifts. With heavy nods towards the vintage and the eclectic, Flagstaff General Store is an engaging and cozy retail space that thinks outside of the big box—this is not your grandmother’s thrift shop nor your mother’s Ethan Allen nor everyman’s Ikea. “Our approach is hard-to-find items with a small-town flair,” Kruger explained. “We are very proud to be working with over 35 local artists who help to keep our inventory fresh. Each piece tells a story – many are handmade here in Flagstaff, with materials sourced here and by artists we appreciate. I also get some heirloom pieces in from estates and families, which come with their own backstories – a Hoosier hutch from the late 1800s that hosted a lot of wild parties or a bride’s hope chest that has been refitted as a coffee table.” The store is a visual feast, loosely layered around collections of one-of-a kind light fixtures, scrap wood and metal wall art,

repurposed lockers and crates, and reimagined tables, frames, and headboards, plus that perennial Fixer Upper favorite, mason jars. Some recent finds include a vintage water ski loaded with coat hooks, vintage gas cans repurposed as vases, and a knot-wood necklace sourced
from Flagstaff ponderosa pine. Holiday season brings playful ornaments (“don’t get your tinsel in a tangle!”), artisan candles, handcrafted gifts and local baked goods. Current favorites around the store include clever vintage signs (“Eat-Drink-Ski”) by Misti
Welker of Illuminate Joy and the custom lighting fixtures Kruger commissions from JR Reid of Just Rustic, including one fashioned from bike spokes and license plates. “I’m kind of a light junkie,” she confesses. “I get attached to everything in the store. But I love it when pieces find their new home. I like to envision them there.” Except maybe the sassy 1966 royal blue Schwinn five-speed with its own light generators. “I might get sad when that one sells. Maybe I’ll just have to make that mine.” Customer service comes naturally here. Kruger and her team are clearly adept at recognizing whatever hand-holding a customer might need. A shopper recently hauled in a heavily-framed mirror, flummoxed by how to finish her remodeled fireplace mantle. After settling in the customer’s two small boys with crayons and stickers, Heidi cheerfully assembled flocked ribbons and laurel wreaths, demonstrating various motifs to play up the mirror. Toss in a few suggestions of stain color and how to safely hang it, and the customer and her boys were off, problem solved. Kruger’s knack for repurposing and weaving together disparate design elements was the inspiration for Flagstaff General Store. “FGS

was my mom’s idea. She grew up in a tiny town—Etna, Wyoming. My grandmother actually rode a sleigh to school. They shopped for everything at the local general store which also served as the post office and center of town life. My mom is an amazing businesswoman and saw how I loved sprucing up rooms for friends and finding unique pieces to revamp. I just love to decorate— it comes naturally to me.” With the help of her mother, Pam and Kruger’s husband, Sean, plus more family and friends,
the store was launched on Black Friday two years ago. The back end of the store hosts a beverage corner, loaded with wines, craft beers and old-fashioned sodas, including a tap for filling growlers with local brews from Historic and Mother Road. Kruger’s husband, whose family owned a vineyard in southern California, is charged with selecting the vintages, which represent 30-plus wineries. “We try to carry wines no one else in town has, and Sean or I personally try every single one, so we

On a recent Saturday, the parking lot was filled to capacity with crafters arriving for the popular “Make-n-Take” rustic sign workshop hosted by Misti Welker. Throughout December the store will be hosting several private workshops for corporate holiday parties.
As a Flagstaff native, Heidi is thrilled to add the Flagstaff General Store to the town’s flourishing independent business scene. “There’s so much support here for buying local. It’s a great place for something like this. Other businesses have been very encouraging— like Real Deals, the Lite Company and Aunt Maude’s Antiques. We often send customers to each other. Flagstaff is great that way. We plan to be a part of the scene for a long time.” Learn more at www.flagstaffgeneralstore.com.

best suit them long term—I’d rather see someone get a pair of shoes that they can wear 100 times than just for one particular occasion. No one wants to spend money and then just see it sitting sadly in the closet waiting for another chance to see the dance floor.” Cornette and company have worked hard to create an inviting space at Shoes ‘N’ Such, a place that feels both familiar to their returning customers, but also has something new and fresh to offer them and new customers. “It’s important to keep brand consistency while introducing new styles and vendors,” she said. “We stay consistent with brands that exhibit good quality and fresh styles. Over the years we have ‘broken up’ with many brands that don’t stand behind their product … We try to keep our brands consistent and dapple in new brands to test them out.” Shoes ‘N’ Such, which has been a constant with its location on Aspen Avenue downtown for the past
14 years, is looking to maintain the joys of clothes and shoes shopping in an actual shop and not online— and help keep retail thriving downtown. “Actual stores to shop in with actual people and actual product to touch, try on, and admire is so much more fun than shopping online,” Cornette said. “It’s really up to the locals to support the downtown stores they love … Retail shops downtown balance out the bars, restaurants and coffee shops and create a little something for everyone to do. I look at cities like San Luis Obispo, California, Asheville, North Carolina, and Durango, Colorado, where there is food and retail available, and it totally works.” She added, “We have so many people traveling to or through Flagstaff that our downtown makes a fun destination for those to see what our little city can offer—great local shopping, tasty up and coming restaurants and fun little bars ad pubs to hang out at—a mix of it all in historic downtown.”

Young Wonder Student Artist Breaks into Best of Flag | By the Staff
O
ur Best Artist category again this year is dominated by two great Flagstaff painters who also are well-known and loved in the town’s artistic community. Shonto Begay and Emma Gardner both found themselves in First Place and Second Place, respectively, in this year’s votes for Best of Flag. Begay is a long-time Navajo artist whose paintings capture the spirit and essence of the reservation and its people, while Gardner is known for, among 1 SHONTO other themes, her approach to BEGAY Mexican folk-art traditions and 2 EMMA nods to Día de los Muertos. GARDNER However, we were surprised 3 MCKENZIE this year to find a younger DANKERT artist, still a student at Northern Arizona University, on this list. Honorable Mention went to McKenzie Dankert, who beat out what’s likely dozens of possible best artists in town to make the list this year. So, we caught up with Dankert to ask her a few questions.
Local Artist
Walk us through your artistic journey so far. What first drew you to visual art? What were some of your early interests and inspirations in terms of medium and theme? I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or making something. I am a visual learner, and I think what first drew me to visual art was the fact that it offered me a place to make sense of the things going on in my life and the world around me. I took art classes through middle and high school and started to take my artistic journey seriously my senior year, when I made the decision to pursue it professionally. I started in on my McKenzie BFA here at NAU with an emphasis Danker t in painting back in 2012, and I think that’s when I really started thinking about the content of my work and why I was making the things that I did. For people unfamiliar with your work, explain what medium you work in primarily and how you approach that medium. What are some themes, images or elements that are common in your art? I tend to shift between painting and printmaking. I think each offers something different to the content I explore as an artist. Currently, I am most focused on

demands of college life and an artistic pursuit? How do you stay focused? For me, the two are heavily intertwined. I think a lot of it comes from having the mentality that my professional life doesn’t have to wait until I have my degree. I’ve tried my best to take what I learn in school and bring it outside of the university; to make connections and pursue the start of a career while I am still here. Each opportunity I take as an artist keeps me driven and focused on the next. Selling art, really just sharing it with the world and having those reactions and interactions with people when I put my work out there is as humbling as it is fulfilling. That process and those feelings alone are so fulfilling to me that they ultimately keep me going in my artistic pursuit.
What are your long range plans for developing your art and staying on track to grow your artistic ambitions? After I graduate with my BFA this semester, I plan on taking the next year or so to participate in as many workshops and exhibitions as possible, while taking commission work and continuing to sell my work at local markets and festivals. I’d like to apply to the international art exhibition ArtPrize based out of Grand Rapids in the fall, and potentially begin applications for graduate programs next winter. I may also wait and take time to travel. I think it’s incredibly important for me to let those cultural experiences help continue to shape my art and life.

lithography printmaking. I draw a lot on themes about the fleeting nature of the human experience, and the connect and disconnect we experience with ourselves and the natural world. Typically, the imagery I create is a marriage of portraiture and other elements of the natural world, and I often fragment or create ghosts of the subjects … The body of work I am making right now includes my first textile lithography pieces, and largest lithographs to date which I am excited to share. Where are you from originally and what brought you to NAU? How do NAU and Flagstaff fit into your artistic journey? What resources, support, passions or ideas do you draw from in this environment?
I am originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan and relocated to Phoenix, Arizona when I was 9 years old. I received an in-state scholarship and had the option to attend UA, ASU, or NAU. I toured the NAU campus in the spring of 2012, and really just fell in love with the town and the scenery overall. I consider myself heavily emotionally impacted by my surroundings, and I knew it was time to push myself out of my comfort zone. Being from the Midwest had me missing the season change, so that was a big factor in my decision to come up here as well. As an artist, I draw inspiration from my environment. Working in a studio with a perfect view of the pine trees and the peaks still feels like a dream to me. How do you juggle the

ocated off of U.S. 89 north of Flagstaff, Second Chance Center for Animals has become a well-known and well-loved animal shelter that’s a major pet advocate. It’s among dozens and dozens of great advocacy groups in town, and this year the Best of Flag readers named it Best Pet Adoption and second place for Best Nonprofit in this year’s contest (Shadows Foundation, featured in last year’s winner’s edition, also won First in the category this year). So, we took the time to ask Second Chance Executive Director Sean Hawkins about the organization and the wins. Second Chance Center for Animals won best Pet Adoption this year. Can you talk about why you think readers were so excited to vote for Second Chance and what you think might have played a role in the win? Second Chance Center for Animals is undergoing a transformation on how we care for animals and how we partner with the community in so many exciting ways to help more animals find homes. I think the community is becoming aware of our efforts, which include the new Open Paw training and education program, and people want to help us save more animal lives. Can you talk about what’s been happening at Second Chance the past few

years? Have there been any changes in services, approach or outreach? What has Second Chance been focusing recently? Our new vision is to create a Northern Arizona community where every dog and cat has a home. This year we have partnered with Coconino Humane Association to transfer adoptable pets from that organization when they are full to Second Chance Center for Animals. With this new partnership, no healthy adoptable pet has been euthanized in Coconino County since March, 2016. By August of this year, Second Chance had adopted more than 800 dogs and cats into new homes; that’s more animals than in all 12 months of 2015. What are some facets that set Second Chance from other pet placement or adoption agencies? What are some aspects of what you do that set Second Chance apart? New programs at Second Chance Center for Animals include off-site adoption efforts. These programs include having cats for adoption seven days a week at Petco and at Canyon Pet Hospital. We have partnered with companies like Babbitt Ford and PetSmart to have dog adoption events on the weekends. What challenges has the organization faced and what work has been done to
overcome them? Up until recently, Second Chance Center for Animals has largely been funded by the generosity of a private donor so the organization did not have a formal fundraising program. With the death of the private donor, Second Chance is now faced with raising its $1 million operating budget entirely with donations from the community and earned revenue streams like dog training. Our hope is that the community sees us creating a Northern Arizona where every pet has a home and wants to support our success. What are some future plans for Second Chance? What do you see in terms of goals and long-term growth? One of the most exciting new programs at Second Chance Center for Animals is the implementation of the Open Paw training and education program. Open Paw is a program where the public is part of teaching shelter animals manners and skills to help the animals adapt to new homes. Every visitor to the shelter is part of the training with animal interactions, providing food and treats and even playing with toys. We have also opened a remarkable pet supply store in the shelter geared toward new adopters. We carry interesting interactive toys from KONG for dogs and cats, Purina Pro Plan diets and the full-line Ruff Wear outdoor gear for dogs.
