Commonwealth Primary Care ACO
Flagstaff Commonwealth Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is a partnership of independent physicians in Flagstaff utilizing locally owned and operated Primary Care Providers and Specialists, working together to improve the health of people in Northern Arizona. Our goals are enhancing communication between all medical providers and clinics, streamlining processes, providing quality cost-effective care, and improving health outcomes. We understand you have a choice when deciding where you receive medical care. That is why we have created the largest network of local primary care providers, working together to benefit our patients through seamless coordination of care. Commonwealth is a federally approved ACO participating in the Medicare Shared Savings Program.
Proactively working with a primary care provider will improve your health. Go to MyHealthcareTeam.net and take that first step to select a Commonwealth Primary Care Provider. For patients who already see one of our providers, we want to thank you for trusting us with your care, and remind you to make your annual wellness visit. For your convenience, we accept nearly every health plan, which limits out of pocket cost, and most insurance companies will cover an annual wellness visit. As we work to increase participating specialists, Flagstaff Commonwealth ACO identifies and addresses clinical shortages in our community, including mobile medical care in our patient’s homes. We proudly announce the addition of Cardiologist, Cardiac Rehab, Nutritionist and Neurologists, to our network.

The link between cancer and obesity

besity is a growing national problem and the list of related health issues is growing along with it. In addition to diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases, obesity also poses an increased risk of cancer. Cancers of the esophagus, breast, endometrium, colon and rectum, kidney, pancreas, thyroid, gallbladder and other cancer types are present at higher rates in obese patients. The link between cancer and obesity is believed to be a result of the many metabolic and hormonal shifts that occur with obesity. These changes can launch, grow and reproduce cancer cells and tumors, even causing tumors to grow elsewhere in the body. 3FBTPOT CFIJOE UIF IJHIFS QFSDFOUBHF PG cancer in obese patients include: t )JHIFS SBUFT PG FTUSPHFO JO GBU UJTTVF t *ODSFBTFE MFWFMT PG JOTVMJO t 'BU DFMM IPSNPOF QSPEVDUJPO XIJDI stimulates or hinders cell growth.

These issues are compounded in a body already struggling with the increased demands of weight. The good news is that weight loss has a direct and positive effect on cancer and other health problems. Observational studies have shown a decreased risk in cancers among those who lose weight. When bariatric surgery is combined with lifestyle changes in obese patients, they generally lose 30 percent of their body weight compared to only 7 to 10 percent through dieting strategies alone. Those who have bariatric surgery appear to lower their cancer risk as they reduce their size. Good eating habits, physical activity and reduced stress lead to healthier lifestyles for all, and in obese patients, such a lifestyle can be a life-saver. Exercise is also important and it doesn’t have to be time-consuming or exhausting. Walking is the simplest and most natural form of exercise. Walking five days a week for 30 minutes at a time can deliver countless benefits to your health.

BENEFITS OF CANCER GENETIC TESTING By Arizona Oncology

a whole new patient – the whole family. Genetic testing provides the ability to not just help one person, but also their daughter, brother, sister and cousin. So, it’s very empowering for the physician. Genetic testing also has some practical value. For instance, patients who have a BRCA mutation actually have a better chance of survival for breast and ovarian cancer. So it’s not always a bad thing when we tell the patient, “Oh, you have a BRCA mutation,” because their prognosis actually gets better as these cancers respond better to regular chemotherapy. There’s also new drugs like PARP (poly ADP ribose polymerase) inhibitors
At Arizona Oncology, we know each cancer is unique. Together with The US Oncology Network, we bring the expertise of nearly 1,000 physicians nationwide to the delivery of our patients’ care. Genetic testing is very useful for treating the patient, and mitigating risk for patients and their family members. So it’s a very powerful tool. eart disease is often thought to affect more men than women; however, the opposite is true – according to the Women’s Heart Foundation, more women than men die of heart disease each year. Although the traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease – such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity and a family history of heart disease – affect both women and men, other factors may play a bigger role in the development of heart disease in women, including: t .FUBCPMJD TZOESPNF o B DPNCJOBUJPO of high blood pressure, blood sugar, triglycerides and fat around the abdomen,
