Cardiovascular Health

injuries DON’T WAIT

Beginning at age 45, levels should be checked at least every three years.

UNCHANGEABLE RISKS

T

he American Heart Association reports that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of death among American men. Screenings for this disease are very important, as you can still lead a healthy life by changing behaviors that impact this condition. Heart disease is mostly preventable in younger men. You can boost your heart health by practicing regular exercise, eating healthy and drinking alcohol responsibly. REGULAR SCREENINGS The AHA recommends you beginning regular cardiovascular screenings as early as age 20. There are several factors your

doctor will analyze to determine your risk factors. Learn what they’re looking for and the recommended age to begin certain screenings. • Blood pressure: It is unlikely you will experience noticeable symptoms due to high blood pressure. This is why early screenings are crucial. An initial screening should be administered at age 20 and regularly checked based on your doctor’s recommendation. • Cholesterol: At the age of 20 and every four to six years after that, you should be checked for cholesterol discrepancies. Cholesterol levels that are too high or too low can be extremely dangerous to your heart. • Glucose levels: Diabetes can wreak havoc on heart health.

While there are many proactive measures you can practice to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, there are some factors you are unable to change. Aging greatly raises the risk of developing heart disease. About 80 percent of people who die from coronary heart disease are age 65 or older. Another risk you cannot alter is gender. Men have a greater risk of experiencing a heart attack and are more likely to experience them earlier in life. Heart disease also can be genetic. Determine your family history of heart issues to learn more about your risks.

FACTORS YOU CAN CHANGE Quit smoking. This is imperative. The AHA states that smokers are up to four times more likely to develop heart disease than nonsmokers. Stay in shape. Physical activity such as jogging or weight lifting strengthens heart muscles and can keep your body’s fat levels low. Excess body fat, especially at the waist, plays a large role in heart disease. Eat healthy. Avoid sugary and fatty foods. A healthy diet is a great defense against cardiovascular disease.

ating clean is a great way to hit the “refresh” button on your eating habits and take an active interest in what you feed your body. Clean eating is about trying to make the best and healthiest choices from each food group — and cutting back on refined grains and added salts and sugars. Eating clean is not about dieting but nutrition. There is no need to count calories or give up entire food groups. Here are just a few strategies to help you eat clean:

Eating Clean

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE PYRAMID The food pyramid was a graphic developed by the USDA and the Department of Health and Human Services to help educate people on the basic food groups, the nutrients provided by these groups, and how to make the best eating choices. The pyramid has since been joined by the Healthy Eating Plate, which indicates how much space on your plate a certain food group should hold. Both of these guidelines will help you make better eating choices.

SHOP THE OUTER RING OF THE GROCERY STORE The freshest and best-for-you foods are generally located around the perimeter of the store (the bakery, produce, dairy cases, butcher and deli). This also will help you cut back on processed foods, which are loaded with preservatives and are generally

higher in salt and sugar, which is not good for the heart. Don’t avoid the middle completely, however. You may need to visit specific aisles for other nutritious items such as peanut butter, cereals and dried fruits.

GO ORGANIC According to the Organic Consumers Association, organic crops are “grown without chemical pesticides or fertilizers and organic livestock are raised without antibiotics, growth hormones or other drugs.” Basically, organic food has not been genetically modified in any way. This means a healthier impact on your body.

ADDRESS EMOTIONAL EATING ISSUES Emotional eating involves consuming, abstaining or purging to fill an emotional need. It’s an healthy behavior and should be addressed immediately. If you or someone you know suffers from an eating disorder, please find help. You are not alone. Call the National Eating Disorders Association’s toll-free, confidential helpline at 800-931-2237. habits — or sleep hygiene — can make a big difference in your quality of life. If you are having difficulty The Arizona Daily Sun

either falling or staying asleep, consider re-evaluating any of the following healthy sleep habits. Remember, talk to a medical professional if your sleep problems persist.

KEEP A CONSISTENT SCHEDULE Bedtimes are not just for kids. It is important to set a bedtime for yourself that is early enough to get at least seven hours of sleep. It is just as important to get up at the same time every day — even on weekends. By staying consistent, you are setting your internal clock and will eventually start to wake around the same time without an alarm. As important as consistency is, however, don’t force it. If you lay in bed for 20 minutes with all devices off and no other distractions, you may be better off getting up. It is important that your brain associates your bed with sleep.

ADOPT A BEDTIME RITUAL A great way to indicate to your body that it’s time for sleep is to create a relaxing pre-bedtime routine. This doesn’t mean you need to take a bath with lavender bath salts every night (although that sounds amazing). Choose a time when all The Arizona Daily Sun

screens get turned off. Perhaps read a book and put on pajamas you really enjoy. Establishing a pre-bedtime ritual also will help you stick to your bedtime.

You took away the pain. You restored my function and mobility. You gave me my life back.

You changed my life.

The letters continue to come. We are a trusted source for your muscle, bone, joint and spine care. Just ask our patients.

EXERCISE DAILY According to a study published by Mental Health and Physical Activity, 35 to 40 percent of the population has problems falling or staying asleep. The same study found that 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week improved people’s sleep quality by 65 percent. Physical activity is not only good for physical exertion but to release negative mental energy that becomes trapped — keeping us awake through stress.

EVALUATE YOUR ENVIRONMENT Keeping the room at a comfortable, cool temperature improves sleep. Your bedroom should be quiet and relaxing. If there are things in the room that disrupt the quiet (such as a television) consider removing them. Clutter also is a discreet lurker. Pick up everything off your floors, and make sure laundry is put away. You will be surprised how much a clean space can improve your sleep.

Common Myths About Hearing Aids 1.

Misperceptions about Hearing Aids While hearing aids have helped millions of people around the world improve their quality of life, there are still some misconceptions about them. So we’ve listed just some of the most common myths below. Don’t let these common myths keep you or someone you care about from getting help to overcome hearing loss.

“They’re more trouble than they’re worth.”

The Truth: Everyone’s experience is different. Your friend or your brother or your co-worker may not have gotten the results they expected, but that doesn’t mean

there isn’t a good solution out there for you. Today’s advanced technology has resolved many complaints about hearing aid performance.

2.

“They’re too expensive.” The Truth: It’s true that hearing aids are an investment, and lack of insurance reimbursement can be a barrier. But given the improvement they make in quality

of life, productivity and earning potential on the job, the money spent can be more than worth it. Prices vary among hearing styles, models and providers, so discuss all your options with a trained hearing professional.

3.

“They’ll make me look old!” The Truth: Your hearing loss may be far more noticeable than today’s discreet new hearing aids. As more Baby Boomers have sought help for hearing loss,

demand for smaller, less noticeable styles has grown. Many models are designed to be invisible when worn such as Lyric; the world’s first invisible extended-wear hearing device. Manufacturers make hearing aids in a wide palette of colors to either blend with hair and skin tones or to stand out as fashionably colored electronic communications accessories similar to Bluetooth© phone accessories. Accepting the help that today’s hearing aids offer can keep you as young as you feel.

4.

“My hearing isn’t that bad.”

The Truth: Because hearing loss often happens gradually, many people don’t notice how significant it has become. If you’re constantly asking people to repeat themselves, turning up the TV volume, or misunderstanding conversations around you, it might be time to seek help. Evidence shows that early intervention is more effective. If you wait too long, your brain may begin to lose the ability to recognize and process speech. You may also exhibit signs of memory loss and a diminished ability to multitask.

The best way to have all your questions about your hearing answered is to visit your local hearing care professional. For years Connect Hearing, has been providing Arizona with outstanding patient care. Visit us online at www.connecthearing.com or call (888) 218-0532 to book your free no-obligation consultation near you. And with a free two-week trial, you have nothing to lose!

Low levels of stress can be good for you, even causing hormones to overload your body that will increase your heart rate and give an energy boost. When stress begins interfering with your ability to lead a normal life, it becomes dangerous. This spring, plan a vacation to reset your stress levels.

DON’T STRESS ABOUT PLANNING The whole point of taking a stress-free vacation is to avoid the pressures of your everyday life. Planning a vacation can get stressful if you’re attempting to do it alone. Instead, enlist the help of your local travel agency. Professional agents can take control by booking hotel rooms and flight tickets, and can even provide an itinerary of attractions at your destination.

CHOOSING A DESTINATION When planning your vacation spot, decide on your getaway goals. For instance, if long lines or big crowds aren’t your idea of The Arizona Daily Sun

relaxing, you may benefit from booking a trip to a less popular vacation destination. America is full of beautiful places that aren’t considered tourist hotspots. The time of year can also play a major role in how busy a destination will be. Do some research to find out when your dream destination is busiest. Planning around their slow times may save you money and will cut down on the crowds.

SECURE YOUR HOME Leaving your home for a long period of time can be stressful. The last thing you want to do on your vacation is worry about your house being taken care of. Find a reliable house sitter to check in on your home or even stay while you are gone. In addition to a house sitter, it is a good idea to talk to a home security agency. They can send alerts to your smartphone or even let you tune in to your security cameras. This peace of mind will add to your stress-free state of mind.

Make Time For Exercise

Y

ou should perform some type of exercise each day. Research shows that daily movement and activity produces tremendous benefits to our health, including lowering our risk of all sorts of |diseases, higher bone density and weight loss. 16 Health & Medicine | 2017

In short, being active has the opportunity to greatly improve life span as well as life quality.

PICK AN ACTIVITY YOU ENJOY If you don’t enjoy running, you will never climb out of bed every morning and hit the pavement. That’s OK. Not everyone has to be a runner. Picking an activity you genuinely like will make you want

to do it. For so many of us, exercise has become a chore — one more thing to carve out time for, and completed on auto-pilot or not at all. By participating in something that brings you joy, you will be fueling yourself physically and mentally.

HAVE A BUDDY Exercising with someone can not only be motivational but helps

The Arizona Daily Sun

make it fun. You can even pick a family activity, such as playing whiffle ball in the backyard with your kids. Studies show that when we are active with even one other person, we are more likely to participate in that activity more often and for longer periods of time.

MOVE MORE While practicing a specific activity or exercise routine is great, you also should try to re-train your brain into a “move more” mentality. This is not just, “taking the stairs instead of the elevator” stuff. How many times do you circle a parking lot, hoping to find a spot just a little bit closer to the entrance? In a society that prioritizes time, we are guilty of wasting it in the name of moving less.

FOCUS ON THE HABIT Building the habit of exercising every day is just as important, if not more important, than the results you achieve. If you develop a ritual or routine around your exercise, you are significantly more likely to make it habit. Remember, this does not have to take a lot of time, and can be as simple as telling yourself you will go to the gym. Take the pressure off of getting on any sort of machine while you’re there, Just tell yourself you have to go. Setting expectations that are unachievable is a folly to which we all fall victim. Keeping goals and expectations small will help you establish a routine and build a habit. The Arizona Daily Sun

Colon Health

A

bout one in 21 men will develop colon cancer during their lifetime. As with other cancers, early screening is just as important as practicing a healthy lifestyle.

The American Cancer Society estimates that colorectal cancer will take the lives of 50,260 Americans in 2017. As the third-leading cause of cancer-related death in men, it is crucial to understand the importance of early detection and what you can do to prevent colorectal cancer.

SCREENINGS Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men who

are at an average risk of colon cancer should begin screenings at the age of 50. A higher risk due to family history may require early screenings. A colonoscopy is performed to inspect your rectum and entire colon for signs of cancer. Typically, a doctor will be looking for polyps, which are small growths that commonly turn cancerous. These polyps can be easily eliminated or pulled for a biopsy during the procedure.

For your doctor to have a clear view, you will be required to completely empty your colon before your appointment. This means you must avoid solid foods for at least 24 hours. Ask your doctor about acceptable consumables. During the procedure, your doctor will insert a colonoscope into your rectum. This instrument contains a light and a video camera, giving your doctor a clear visual of your colon’s condition. Typically, the procedure only lasts around 30 minutes and a full recovery occurs just a few hours afterwards.

SYMPTOMS OF COLON CANCER Sometimes, the only way to spot colon cancer is through a colonoscopy, but the following symptoms require immediate attention: • Blood in stool or blood stains in underwear; • Constant abdomen pain; and • Unexplained weight loss.

HEALTHY HABITS Keeping your colon healthy requires staying in overall good health. Having regular bowel movements without experiencing pain is a good indicator that everything is working normally. Constant diarrhea or any signs of bleeding mean you should take proactive measures to enhance your colon’s health. Limit your levels of caffeine and alcohol to boost health. Plenty of water and exercise are other great weapons. Men also are recommended to ingest at least 32 grams of fiber per day.

Healthy Prostate P

rostate cancer is a major problem for American men. The American Cancer Society reports more than 190,000 new cases in the United States each year.

Staying on top of your prostate health is key, as the disease generally develops so slowly that is commonly caught before it can spread to other parts of your body. An initial screening is recommended at the age of 50 and annually after that. A family history or other factors that increase your risk may require an earlier checkup.

TYPES OF SCREENING Doctors can generally perform two different types of screening to diagnose prostate cancer. The first requires a physical rectum exam in which your physician will identify any abnormalities such as lumps, hard spots or any signs of growth. A healthy prostate is about the size of a walnut. The less intrusive way of testing is called a prostate specific

antigen (PSA) test. A simple blood test that checks levels of PSA in blood. Men with prostate issues typically have higher levels.

TREATMENT Once prostate cancer has been diagnosed, it is time to begin discussing treatment with your doctor. According to the American Cancer Society, there are several different ways to attack prostate cancer: • Surgery; • Chemotherapy and radiation; • Active surveillance; and • Vaccine treatment. The most effective treatment will depend on the stage of cancer and a person’s age. If you find yourself in this situation, be sure to take your time when deciding which option is best for you. Discuss with your doctor any possible side effects and the

likelihood of cure for each treatment offered.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES While scientists haven’t pinpointed a direct cause of prostate cancer, they recommend an overall healthy lifestyle to lower the risks of cancer in general. You should consume plenty of super foods that contain cancerfighting antioxidants. These can be found in many vegetables including broccoli, kale and Brussels sprouts. Consuming lycopene also has shown positive benefits in preventing prostate cancer. Food sources are easily spotted because lycopene is the pigment that gives red fruits and vegetables their colors. It works by destroying free radicals in your body that attempt to attach to your cells and damage your immune system. 2017 | Health & Medicine 19

The Mind and Health

hen people think about health, they often focus on the body and forget about the mind. However, the mind can be the most important cause of either great or poor health. One way to consider how we observe the mind is to separately examine the conscious and subconscious. The conscious mind is the part that we are most familiar with, it works with numbers and letters, math, reading and planning. The conscious mind can only pay attention to a limited amount of information and can only do one thing at a time. There is no such thing as “multi-tasking” when it comes to the conscious mind. It can actually shut off, go blank or “space out.”The subconscious mind is always on. It processes millions of bits of information every second and it is where memories are stored. It’s also where emotions happen and the

body’s processes are controlled. All of the senses are processed through the subconscious. Blood pressure, heart rate, awareness of pain, digestive and immune functions are all part of the subconscious. The conscious and subconscious are not totally separate. Breathing is normally under subconscious control, but anytime the conscious mind decides, a person can change their breathing. Everyone has had that experience with breathing, but one can easily change their blood pressure, heart rate or sense of pain just by being aware and then deciding to make a change. Destructive emotions like fear, anger, stress and anxiety can also be controlled using the power of the mind. Hypnosis, visualization, mindfulness and meditation are some of the techniques that can be used to achieve a happier and healthier life. The Arizona Daily Sun

LEARN TO LOVE YOU Resist comparing yourself to others. It inherently forces us to unnecessarily judge ourselves, and what we are doing (or not doing). This nasty little habit can lead to a lack of self-esteem. Instead, acknowledge your own accomplishments and celebrate your achievements. Forgive yourself for mistakes you’ve made in the past.

Living With Anxiety

F

orty million people in the United States alone are currently living with anxiety, yet, it is one of the most misunderstood disorders — and trivialized, in part due to the casualness with which the term is thrown out to describe something. Let’s all raise awareness by staying informed. Here are few facts and figures on living with anxiety. • Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the Unites States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. • According to Daniel and Jason Freeman, authors of “The Stressed Sex: Uncovering the Truth about Men, Women and Mental Health,” rates of psychological disorders are 20 to 40 percent higher in women than in men. • Anxiety disorders are treated — not cured. • There are many types of anxiety disorders, including: general anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and separation anxiety disorder. • Of all of these, general anxiety disorder is the most common, affecting 5 percent of Americans at some point in their lives. 22 Health & Medicine | 2017

• Even though anxiety disorders are highly treatable, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, only onethird of those suffering receive treatment. • The ADAA also asserts that anxiety disorders affect one in eight children. Left untreated, these children are shown to perform poorly in school and miss out on important social experiences. • Sufferers of anxiety are known to suffer physically as well, including feeling shortness of breath, shaking, nausea, headaches, rapid heartbeats and dizzy spells. • Proven effective treatments include medication, but also many other forms management, such as therapy, learning coping strategies and alternative methods such as yoga and acupuncture. If someone you love is suffering, help them seek treatment. While erasing all worries is unrealistic, being in a constant state of anxiety doesn’t have to be the norm. The Arizona Daily Sun
