Oct 26: Classic Horror Double Feature: Nosferatu Dir. F.W. Murnau, Germany, 1922, 94 mins. and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Dir. Robert Wiene, Germany, 1920, 71 min NOSFERATU, EINE SYMPHONIE DES GRAUENS is an early unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Though a court ruled in favor of Stoker’s heirs and ordered all copies of the film destroyed, this masterpiece of German expressionism went on to become one of the first cult films and is now considered one of the greatest films of all time. DAS CABINET DES DR. CALIGARI, also a classic example of German expressionism, tells the tale of a hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders. More than a simple horror movie, this film is a political allegory and a reaction to the horrors of the First World War.

Tomas Alfredson, Sweden, 2008, 114 min This award-winning coming-of-age film adds a playful twist to the usual formula—Eli, one of the two protagonists, is in fact a centuries-old vampire. This doesn’t prevent Eli from forming a friendship with Oskar, who struggles with bullies at school. As the friendship develops, Oskar learns a great deal about himself.
Nov 30: El Orfanato/The Orphanage Dir. J.A. Bayona, Spain/Mexico, 2007, 105 min THE ORPHANAGE follows Laura, who intends to buy the orphanage in which she grew up and turn it into a home for disabled children. Her adopted son, a social worker, and a ghost create difficulties for her, which are compounded when her son disappears. She investigates the orphanage’s past and makes some horrifying discoveries.
