INTERNATIONAL MUSICALS | Spring 2017 Most films unrated; viewer discretion advised.
Feb 1: Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel) Dir. Josef von Sternberg, Germany, 1930, 99 min In an effort to steer his students away from its corrupting influence, Professor Rath visits the titular cabaret, where he falls in love with the headliner, the seductive Lola Lola. Their love affair leads to a downward spiral for both of them. This film, which brought international fame to Marlene Dietrich, was subsequently banned in Nazi Germany.
Feb 15: Afrita Hanem (Little Miss Devil/The Genie Lady) Dir. Henry Baraket, Egypt, 1949, 97 min Asfour, a poor musician (played by the celebrated Egyptian singer Farid Al Atrache) is in love with his boss’ daughter, Aleya (the famous Egyptian dancer Samia Gamal). Asfour finds a genie (also played by Gamal) whose infatuation with Asfour makes her less than helpful in his quest to win Aleya’s heart. This classic Egyptian musical is a critique of Western modernity with a touch of slapstick humor.
Feb 22: I Have Found It Dir. Rajiv Menon, India (Tamil language), 2000, 151 min Filmed in Tamil Nadu, this film is from a different cinematic tradition than the more well-known Bollywood industry. Nonetheless, it features splendid music and a rich plot inspired by Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Sowmya, the serious elder sister, falls in love with aspiring film director Manohar, while the passionate younger sister Meenakshy is in love with Srikanth, a businessman and fellow lover of poetry. Meanwhile, the wounded Captain Bala has his heart set on Meenakshy.
Mar 1: Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony Dir. Lee Hirsch, South Africa, 2002, 108 min This documentary examines the role of music throughout the history of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Through a combination of archival footage, interviews, and musical performances, Lee Hirsch tells the story of South African freedom songs from the 1940s to the 1990s and illustrates the fall of the segregationist system in that country. The title comes from the Zulu and Xhosa word for “power.”
*Mar 2: Stilyagi/Hipsters Dir. Valery Todorovsky, Russia, 2006, 120 min In the 1950s, a group of young Muscovites rebel against Soviet conformity through imported music, American nicknames, and flashy black-market fashion. Mels, a 20-year-old committed communist, initially looks down upon their rebellion but is finally seduced by their free-wheeling lifestyle.
Mar 29: Desi Boyz Dir. Rohot Dhawan, India, 2011, 122 min Nick and Jerry, two Indians living in London, lose their jobs due to the economic downturn and become escorts for the company “Desi Boyz.” The new jobs, however, are not enough to stop the downward spiral of their personal lives, and the two struggle to regain control of their situations.
Apr 5: 8 Femmes/8 Women Dir. François Ozon, France, 2002, 111 min In an isolated house in the French countryside, the man of the house is found with a knife in his back. The telephone line is cut, and the roads are inaccessible. Who has killed him? His snobbish wife? His invalid mother-in-law? His estranged sister? His neurotic sister-in-law? The faithful housekeeper or the mysterious new maid? One of his two daughters? Amid rich scenery, lively musical numbers, and gorgeous costumes, this murder mystery reveals the treachery of all eight women.
Apr 12: Landfill Harmonic Dirs. Brad Allgood and GrahamTownsley, Paraguay/Norway/Brazil/USA, 2015, 84 min Landfill Harmonic follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight. Under the guidance of idealistic music director Favio Chavez, the orchestra must navigate a strange new world of arenas and sold-out concerts. However, when a natural disaster strikes their community, Favio must find a way to keep the orchestra intact and provide a source of hope for their town. The film is a testimony to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. Co-sponsored by Latin American Studies
Apr 19: Violeta Se Fue a Los Cielos/Violeta Went to Heaven Dir. Andrés Wood, Chile, 2011, 110 min This biopic follows the life of Chilean folklorist Violeta Parra, whose life was devoted to the preservation and diffusion of Chilean folk music. Francisca Galiván not only plays the titular character, but also performs her music. Co-sponsored by Latin American Studies

Silent Sky, by Lauren Gunderson
Peter and the Starcatcher, by Rick Elice Fresh off the Broadway and regional stages, the Tony Award winning play with music, Peter and the Starcatcher, is a grownup’s prequel to the timeless tale of Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatcher is based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, with music by Wayne Barker.
The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries. Social progress, like scientific progress, can be hard to see when one is trapped among earthly complications. Leavitt’s dedication changed the way we understand both the heavens and Earth. 7:30 p.m. | Feb. 24 – 25, Mar. 1 – 4 2 p.m. | Feb. 26, Mar. 5 Studio Theater
