ATHENA HISTORY The Athena Leadership Model identifies eight tenets of leadership that reflect women’s unique ways of leading. Infused with the 21st century demands for balance, accountability, and continuous learning, the model is a guide for leadership behavior and emphasizes the tenet’s interdependent relationship to the practice of dynamic leadership. The tenets include the authentic self, relationships, giving back, collaboration, courageous acts, learning, fierce advocacy, celebration and joy. The ATHENA Award was founded nationally in 1982 by Martha Mayhood Mertz and ATHENA International, a nonprofit organization that seeks to support, develop and honor women leaders. The goddess Athena was chosen as the symbol for the program to reflect the qualities the award honors - strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment. The 2015 ATHENA Award also marks the ninth year that the Greater Flagstaff Chamber recognizes an emerging female leader with the ATHENA Young Professional Award, designed to honor women under the age of 35 who have demonstrated excellence in their careers, contribute to the community, and clearly stand out as role models for young women both professionally and personally.

ATHENA NOMINEES VICKI BURTON Founder, Shadows Foundation Vicki Burton is one half of the morning radio show on KAFF Country, but her nomination is based on her work with the Shadows Foundation, which she created in 2010 to help families affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The team at Shadows Foundation provides financial help to families in need and promotes a unified voice to increase community awareness of ways to help. Ms. Burton’s on air platform also helps her to spread the news of numerous fundraising events sponsored by Shadows, and she has recruited a number of Flagstaff businesses to join this effort. To date, the foundation has provided over $150,000 in assistance to families and individuals residing in Northern Arizona and our surrounding communities. In addition to the primary mission of the Shadows Foundation, Ms. Burton has created additional programs to meet other needs of Flagstaff and Northern Arizona families. The “Hearts Worth Saving” program created an advanced screening program used by Northern Arizona first responders to detect heart conditions. The “Better Bucks” program seeks to take the place of panhandling by providing vouchers from local businesses for necessities for living. Ms. Burton personally supports the annual Law Enforcement Toy Drive and recently helped a family that lost everything in a fire. Finally, she has been recognized as an advocate for women’s issues by Soroptomist, which awarded her its 2013 Ruby Red Award for Women Helping Women.

VALERIE CARO

WENDY BRUUN Director, Northern Arizona University First-Generation Programs Wendy Wallace Bruun is passionate about helping college students find the right path to becoming productive community members. From Washington to Colorado to Arizona, she has maintained a career in the area of university student services, whether in the residence halls or campus activities. She arrived at Northern Arizona University in 2005 to work for Residence Life, starting a program specifically addressed to first year students in addition to her administrative duties. In 2010, she moved to Student Support Services to lead the TRIO program, a federally-funded program that aids over 400 first-generation, low income students to achieve a baccalaureate degree through help with financial needs and life coaching. Last year, Ms. Bruun wrote the grant to continue the funding. In 2014, she moved into her current position as the Director of First-Generation Programs, which assists students who are first in their families to attend college. Ms. Bruun is vigilant about helping to meet NAU student needs, creating programs to help youth and college students who are transitioning from foster care, a non-perishable food pantry on campus, and a textbook loan program. She is a frequent lecturer and writer in the area of student services. Ms. Bruun’s volunteer service also reflects her passion for the betterment of university students. Through NASPA, a national organization for student services professionals, she has mentored two young women entering the student affairs profession. She is the co-chair of Arizona Women in Higher Education, a women’s leadership development and networking organization. She has served in the Virtual Mentor program at her alma mater in Washington, and she is an advisor and volunteer writer for PaperClip Communications, a newsletter serving the informational needs of student services professionals. Ms. Bruun also meets the needs of young girls as a Girl Scout troop leader, and helps her church with its administrative duties.

Owner and CEO, Flagstaff Top Producers With 30 years of experience, Valerie Caro is the driving force behind her real estate team’s success. She covers not only the residential and lot sales market, but also large project development, bringing new businesses to Flagstaff and northern Arizona. Her real estate firm is certified by the Small Business Administration as a Women Owned Small Business. In addition to her thriving real estate career, however, Ms. Caro is also the inventor of the My Pickup Artist, a portable makeup carrying case, which she initially funded through a Kickstarter campaign, but which is now sold on Amazon and Skymall, as well as through the product website. This project is also a certified Women Owned Small Business, and through it, Ms. Caro mentors and employs three women in the Flagstaff community. Her dedication to supporting women in business is further exemplified by her recent event hosted for the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council – West, a national organization for women business owners. Ms Caro believes in giving back to the Flagstaff community, and has served as a board member for the Flagstaff Medical Center. She continues to help FMC as its current treasurer and co-chair of the FMC Certificate Holders, and she shares her real estate knowledge as the chair of the Northern Arizona Healthcare Real Estate Task Force. Her passion for healthcare assistance is also demonstrated by her involvement with the Emily Marie Benson Memorial Scholarship, which provides yearly scholarships for NAU students with serious medical conditions, and her work on the Healthcare and Victim Services Committee of the Flagstaff Community Foundation. The children of Flagstaff are also Ms. Caro’s concern, and she is a board member of both the Boys & Girls Club of Flagstaff and Parents As Partners, an organization dedicated to assisting families impacted by autism.

AMY KERR

VICTORIA DARRIS Branch Manager, Arizona State Credit Union Victoria Darris began her Flagstaff career in the lending and title industry, and joined the Arizona State Credit Union five years ago as the Beaver Street Branch Manager. Seeing a need for mentoring, she began working with her assistant branch manager, helping her to find confidence and strength. Ms. Darris’s reviews from her staff reflect the successful coaching she has provided. She also spreads her ideas corporate-wide, adding creative and innovative ideas to the Credit Union’s own Leadership Development Courses. She maintains the same high standards for her own growth and development, and is a recent graduate of the Flagstaff Leadership Program. Ms. Darris has also been recruited to lecture at Coconino High School in the Link Leadership Program, where junior and senior students mentor freshmen students on academic and social issues. Ms. Darris is responsible for creating a curriculum to engage the students while teaching them financial skills, and Krista Dobosh, who coordinates the Link program, applauds her genuine outreach to the students on a personal level. Ms. Darris volunteers with a number of community groups, with a special focus on leading both students and adults to have a better understanding of financial matters. She volunteers regularly at Sharon Manor, Catholic Social Services, Goodwill Industries, and two Flagstaff elementary schools, helping individuals who are struggling and need assistance with financial recovery. In particular, her work at Sharon Manor helps women in the community to change their situations and become financially sound. She is also involved as a coach for the Flagstaff Chill Softball team, and in addition to learning softball skills and gaining college sports scholarships, the girls also volunteer for St. Mary’s Food Bank and the Salvation Army, thus learning the importance of giving back to the community. No matter what her activity, Ms. Darris is committed to personal improvement and the improvement of her community.

Plant Manager, Nestle Purina Pet Care Amy Kerr has been with Nestle Purina Pet Care (NPPC) for her entire professional career, and is a classic example of working up through the ranks. A native of Illinois, Amy graduated from Western Illinois University with a degree in accounting and her membership in financial honors and business organizations. She started with NPPC at an entry level accounting position in 2000, then was promoted each year for four years, gaining experience in both accounting and management. In 2012, she was selected as NPPC’s first ever female Plant Manager, and the Flagstaff plant was chosen to receive her leadership. Since arriving in Flagstaff, Amy has further distinguished herself and her team with NPPC’s Innovation Award for her abilities in retaining employees, and the Best in Show Award for the team’s outstanding waste reduction program. Experience working in a family owned business and membership in the National Guard have taught Amy the importance of leadership and mentoring. In addition to her outstanding performance on the job, Amy serves as a board member for several Flagstaff and Northern Arizona volunteer and leadership organizations, including Boys and Girls Club, Northern Arizona Leadership Alliance, and the United Way of Northern Arizona. As a board member of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, Amy has become a vital part of the Chamber’s Skills for Workplace Success campaign. She coordinates with community colleges and local high schools to provide on the job training for students. Her passion for STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has led her to develop curriculum for students in elementary, middle, and high school levels. This curriculum is taught either in the classroom or at the factory, and Amy herself can often be found leading the classes.

KIMBERLY OTT Communications Manager, City of Flagstaff Kimberly Ott has been the helping the people of Flagstaff to understand events that shape the community for more than 30 years. As the news director at KMGN in the late 80s, she communicated with Flagstaff residents via the “Ott and Scott in the Morning” show. Moving to her City of Flagstaff position gave her access to even more information, which she evaluates for importance and faithfully shares with government and community leaders. Her ATHENA award nomination statements refer consistently to her ability to communicate with fairness, accuracy, integrity, and a great sense of humor. “When Flagstaff faces tragedy or emergency, we look to Kimberly for information and assurances.” In addition to her work at City Hall, Ms. Ott also teaches at NAU’s School of Communications, teaching and mentoring young journalists, especially women, and creating internships to advance ambitious and talented students. As a graduate of Northern Arizona University, Ms. Ott has served on the NAU Alumni Association Board, even accepting the Board President role for a year, and she is an enthusiastic supporter of NAU athletics. She has also served on the board of the United Way of Northern Arizona, and a past chair of that board lauds Ms. Ott’s ability to keep decisions in perspective and focused on long term impact. She has served on the board of the Flagstaff Leadership Program and continues to mentor the women who participate in that program, cultivating women leaders through her own example. In addition to formal leadership roles in Flagstaff, Ms. Ott volunteers in times of need, including helping youth baseball, filling sandbags, organizing Christmas family adoptions, serving meals at shelters, and building homes through Habitat for Humanity. As her nomination statement says, “Kim’s dedication to her profession and the City of Flagstaff is apparent through her endless enthusiasm and tireless commitment.”

JULIE SULLIVAN Art Director/Owner, Julie Sullivan Design and Lucky Girl Productions For 30 years, Julie Sullivan has been making her unique mark on Flagstaff through her design studio and bringing sweet sounds through her music production company. She began her design business in 1984 in Berkeley, CA, before the days of computers. Her style of doing business is notable for her emphasis on collaboration between the client and her creative team, resulting in designs that allow for ownership from all involved parties. Her website says that her specialties include visual identity / branding campaigns for educational institutions, healthcare providers, and the outdoor recreation industry; natural history publications for museums, national parks and national park associations; and packaging design for clients as diverse as a brewery, a global research and consulting firm, and a manufacturer of personal care products. Flagstaff companies using her designs include Mountain Line Transit, the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra, and Kahtoola, to name just a few. Her volunteer work is nearly as extensive as her professional portfolio. In their letter in support of Julie’s nomination, Barbara and Bill Packard describe her work on behalf of the Poore Clinic, which was struggling for recognition when Julie stepped in, but “Julie’s design helped to turn that around.” When the Packards took over a thrift store, Julie was the first person they asked to serve on the board, and renamed the store Full Circle, a company that has given back $200,000 to the community. Furthermore, she is one of the founders of the Pickin’ in the Pines music festival, which has grown to feature national acts such as Ricky Skaggs. She is also a board member of Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music, a NACET mentor, and a volunteer instructor at the Coconino Center for the Arts.

PAMELA “SAM” GREEN TAYLOR Owner, Weatherford Hotel As the owner of one of Flagstaff’s most historical buildings, Sam Green is well aware of the need to serve the Flagstaff community. Together with her husband, Henry Taylor, Ms. Green has spent four decades restoring the vintage Weatherford Hotel to its pioneer era glory, including the balcony and “witch’s cap,” both of which were removed in 1929 after the balcony burned. That restoration project earned a State Historical Project award, as well as the 2015 Governor’s Tourism Award for Arizona Preservation. Within the hotel, Ms. Green has restored the Zane Grey Bar and Ballroom, and she celebrated the 1999 balcony restoration by creating the Pine Cone Drop, Flagstaff’s New Year’s Eve answer to Times Square. Ms. Green’s efforts are not limited to the Weatherford. As a board member of both the Downtown Business Alliance and the Flagstaff Tourism Board, she has encouraged other downtown businesses in their rejuvenation efforts, helping to revitalize the downtown area. Ms. Green was part of the groups that began the summer movies at Heritage Square and the two farmers’ markets, and her nomination document says that she has many more ideas to come. She hosts many political events at the Weatherford, and she is a regular contributor of bed linen to various shelters in Flagstaff. Many of the hotel employees are women, and Ms. Green regularly mentors them to achieve their career goals, whether at the Weatherford or elsewhere in the business world.
