DEAR DONORS, PARTNERS, AND FRIENDS— It was a year we will never forget. A year that brought unparalleled upheaval to individuals, families, and communities here in Arizona and around the globe. A year that tested fixed assumptions, where nearly every challenge cried out for swift action and ingenious solutions. For 43 years, the Arizona Community Foundation has worked to mobilize local philanthropy to improve lives, support fair and equitable access to resources and opportunities, and respond effectively to community needs. Last year, we were called to action like never before. We learned, yet again, that public, private, and philanthropic entities working in collaboration, can accomplish far more together than when acting independently. We rediscovered the critical importance of relationships and how we should respond to what communities tell us they need, rather than what we assume they need. And we were reminded that the burden of crises, whether viral, social, or environmental, are unevenly borne. You inspired us with your generosity and resolve. You—the donors, community leaders, business leaders, government officials, and nonprofit organizations across Arizona—stepped forward with renewed purpose to aid and support those who were struggling. The record-setting results: ACF donors propelled a 100% increase in grantmaking over the previous year and contributed $9.8 million to our COVID-19 response funds that rapidly distributed grants to communities across the state. Additionally, nearly $100 million in small business relief from local government partners was quickly distributed by ACF to thousands of small Arizona businesses, helping to sustain them through unprecedented economic conditions and better position them to power our post-pandemic recovery. In collaboration with our donors and partners, ACF distributed over $196 million across Arizona last year. Our staff met this challenge of scale, distributing nearly 16,000 grants and scholarships—more than double the typical annual volume—while working remotely in alignment with COVID-19 safety protocols. This annual report pays tribute to you, our many diverse collaborators, who came together in a year unlike any other, united in service to communities and the common good. We value the opportunity to work alongside you as we endeavor to live out our mission of a better Arizona, one that honors the experiences, wisdom, and aspirations of all residents. We share these stories in gratitude and admiration. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Robbin M. Coulon, Esq. Board Chair

As board chair, I am so proud and humbled by the work that the ACF team accomplished over this past year.

GREAT BIG THINGS. From tackling a new business model—distributing grants to small businesses— to managing a new way of working—largely remote from home offices— ACF and our donors had a tremendous year. We smashed records with the highest amount of grants ever distributed in a single year—nearly triple the previous record—bringing our total awards since inception to over $1.1 billion. Our assets under management stabilized at just over $1 billion while continuing to grow. Donors stepped up like never before, creating new funds, continuing to make gifts, and expanding their grantmaking to deserving organizations across Arizona, the country, and the globe. To top it off, we welcomed Robbin Coulon as our new board chair, along with the most inclusive slate of officers ever to lead the Arizona Community Foundation Board of Directors.

STEWARDSHIP. We upgraded our technology and financial systems to improve the donor experience. We launched a new online portal for our donors to provide seamless access to fund information.

INTEGRITY. We examined our process for discretionary grants, inviting new partners to provide honest feedback and inform the accessibility and inclusivity of our grantmaking.

DEFINE WHO WE ARE AND

8

INCLUSION. We served Black, Latinx, Native American, and LGBTQ communities through grantmaking and educational resources. We supported social justice and economic stability for Black-led businesses through investments in the Black Philanthropy Initiative. We engaged in the national drive to make all communities more equitable.

NIMBLENESS. We responded quickly in the face of the pandemic and unprecedented natural disasters to provide immediate relief funding. We brought community connection into the homes of our donors, partners, and staff through virtual programming.

EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE. We worked closely with our donors and municipal partners to distribute a record amount of grants, scholarships, and loans, substantially exceeding our annual community impact. We restructured our staff to better serve both our donors and our communities.

COLLABORATION. We partnered with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development to improve infrastructure in rural Arizona. We collaborated with more than 20 community groups and leaders to support undocumented working families in Arizona.

INNOVATION. We distributed nearly $100 million to small businesses and nonprofit organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, in partnership with Maricopa County, the Phoenix IDA, and the cities of Phoenix, Peoria, Chandler, Surprise, Gilbert, Yuma, and Tempe. We hosted another iteration of the New Arizona Prize to tackle the far-reaching effects of housing insecurity in our state.

SUPPORT FOR BLACK BUSINESS OWNERS

Thanks to a $600,000 investment from USAA, the Arizona Community Foundation’s Black Philanthropy Initiative doubled the amount of grant dollars available to improve racial equity and address the employment, educational, and economic disparities experienced by communities of color. BPI’s Social Justice Fund began to work with local leaders to put those grant dollars to good use, and the Social and Economic Equity for Minority Enterprises program was born.

related to strategic development, risk management, budget and cash flow, banking and lending, and sales and marketing. Immediately following the accelerator, the cohort will move into the second phase of the program: plan execution. Business development bankers will provide feedback on the cohort’s business plans, strengthening participants’ portfolios and banking relationships. The program was intentionally designed to make cohort businesses lendable.

ARG Cultivators Community was selected to receive a $429,000 grant in support of its 18-month S.E.E. M.E. program, designed to raise visibility and opportunities for a cohort of 20 Black business owners from across the state.

“As a country, we have been through a lot over the past year and a half. We experienced isolation, social unrest, and it revealed the imbalance in our business ecosystem,” said ARG Cultivators Founder & President Angela Garmon. “Black-owned businesses are generally at a disadvantage. We struggle with access to capital, connection to decision-makers, and, in some cases, lack the resources to scale and grow the business.”

The program launched in early July and consists of two different phases: first, the six-week business accelerator where the business owners engage in topics

Angela understands this struggle and is passionate about breaking the barriers and cycles that have impacted Black and minority business ownership for centuries. She served on the board of the National Association of Women Business Owners – Phoenix Chapter for the past four years, including serving as its president in 2019-2020. For Angela, this experience highlighted the disparities that exist and the lack of awareness that keeps Black and minority business owners out of the spotlight.

The S.E.E. M.E. program aims to remind corporations, lenders, and decisionmakers that just because Black-owned businesses are underrepresented, it does not mean they are underdeveloped. They need to be seen to have greater chances of success. Cohort participant and owner of Black Russian Label Joanna DeShay echoes this sentiment. It’s easy to believe that Joanna has always embodied entrepreneurial success the way she does today, wearing gorgeous creations from her own fashion label’s newest collection. But it wasn’t always this way. She spent years in the corporate sector before her sons inspired her to get into the world of fashion design, encouraging her to ‘do what she loves.’ Now she is a solopreneur as the owner-designer of her upscale clothing brand, teaches courses in fashion design at ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design, and serves as the Executive Director for the Diversity Leadership Alliance. She sees the program as an opportunity to address the wealth gap and collaborate with other entrepreneurs while gaining access to capital. Shannon Tolbert is an investor/operator of two Modern Acupuncture locations in the East Valley and is participating in the S.E.E. M.E. cohort to meet other Black business owners who share her taste for entrepreneurship. With only a few years in the industry, Shannon was initially unsure how to adapt during last year’s global pandemic. While business isn’t quite back to where it was before

the pandemic, she credits her loyal clients and the referrals they made with keeping her business afloat. Their support enabled her to keep the majority of her staff and provide bonuses to everyone last December.

leverages the growing market for resale fashion and is beating the odds to get closer to its customer base. They believe the program is a great opportunity to learn the essentials of running a business alongside fellow Black entrepreneurs.

Micah Phillips and Kris Foster accomplished more than most of us over the past year, opening two upscale resale clothing stores with plans to open a third in December. Brothers and co-owners of Your Favorite Things, Micah and Kris spent years in corporate America before deciding to start a new retail business during last year’s global pandemic. From a warehouse district to Arizona Mills and soon to Scottsdale Fashion Square, Your Favorite Things

While each cohort participant brings a different background and skill set, everyone is there to see and be seen— both by one another and by those whose investments could help them grow their already proven businesses.

eter and Pamela Barbey and their son Matt support causes that are important to them through the Edwin Barbey Charitable Trust, an ACF donor advised fund. These causes include human rights, arts and culture, science and medicine, youth programs, and many others in the communities where they live. The Barbeys have a long history in the publishing world that dates back to 1796. Peter followed in his ancestors’ footsteps by serving as the president and CEO of his family’s Reading Eagle Company, which owned local print newspapers, a radio station, a production company, and a printing company in eastern Pennsylvania. He was also the publisher of The Village Voice, a weekly newspaper in New York. To pay homage to this rich history through charitable giving, Peter and Pamela have recommended over $1 million in grants to PEN America, a nationwide 7,500-member nonprofit organization that works to ensure that people everywhere have the freedom to create literature, to convey information and ideas, to express their views, and to access the views, ideas, and literatures of others. Many of these grants supported the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award, which recognizes an imprisoned writer targeted for the exercise of free expression. Traditionally bestowed at PEN America’s annual New York City gala, the award kicks off a campaign of advocacy for the awardee’s freedom. Of the 51 jailed writers who have received this honor since 1987, 44 have been released due in part to the global attention and pressure the award generates. The Edwin Barbey Charitable Trust became the award’s sponsor in 2016.

Freedom of speech and freedom of “expression in journalism is very important

to our family, which has been involved in news and newspapers for generations. Through our grantmaking to PEN America we seek to increase overall understanding about the extreme importance of preserving local news in America and free speech worldwide, especially in these times. PEN America is one of the most regarded, effective, and important organizations endeavoring to protect free speech. We are proud to support their efforts, and we encourage others to support them as well.

PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award honorees include Chinese essayist, civil rights activist, and lawyer Xu Zhiyong (2020); Saudi writer-activists Nouf Abdulaziz, Loujain Al-Hathloul, and Eman Al-Nafjan (2019, freed in 2021 with continued restrictions on their movement and ability to speak freely); Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo (2018, freed in 2019), Ukrainian writer and filmmaker Oleg Sentsov (2017, freed in 2019), and Egyptian novelist Ahmed Naji (2016, freed in 2018). Last year, the Barbeys also supported PEN America’s report Losing the News: The Decimation of Local Journalism and the Search for Solutions. Building on the work of experts in journalism and media, the report examines how the local news crisis affects communities and democracy and proposes ways to address it. The report ends with a series of recommendations for how news outlets, philanthropic funders, technology companies, regulators, civil society, and elected officials can defend and support local news. These recommendations represent a reimagining of local journalism, in which it is recognized as a civic necessity, and supported accordingly.

The treatment of Indigenous people during the settlement of the United States, and beyond, had profound effects on Native culture. Generational trauma has contributed to high rates of poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, diabetes, obesity, and low graduation rates for Indigenous communities, including some members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe located in eastern Arizona. Established in 2015, the Nalwoodi Denzhone Community seeks to reinvigorate struggling San Carlos Apache youth and families through community gardening, education, art classes, and animal care. Individuals receive hands-on education, inspiration, and life skills training while reconnecting with their land, culture, and creator. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nalwoodi Denzhone Community extended beyond their typical services and delivered food and supplies weekly to those experiencing hardship on the reservation. Often, they would visit homes where the eldest child was caring for their younger siblings. These children were especially thankful to receive this extra support from the organization, which was partially funded by ACF of the Gila Valley. Nalwoodi Denzhone means strength and beauty in the Apache language. Nalwoodi Denzhone Community believes that San Carlos Apache youth and families exemplify true strength, beauty, and resilience despite the challenges many face every day.

Local fact: The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests are home to over 1,000 miles of rivers and streams and 30 lakes, more than any other national forest in the southwest.

$7.8M total amount raised/granted since inception in 2001

The idea for the Arizona Equal Justice Foundation came to life in the mid-1990s. Then-President & CEO of Arizona Public Service Mark DeMichele sought to support legal aid programs in communities across the state. At the time, around two-thirds of low-income individuals in need of legal aid did not have access to expert legal assistance. While the federal government provides a limited amount of funding for community legal services to fulfill the needs of people who meet certain income requirements, this funding is always in jeopardy and has not kept up with demand. In 2000, the state’s three major legal service providers—Community Legal Services, DNA People’s Legal Services, and Southern Arizona Legal Aid—raised alarm bells when 24,360 hours of pro bono support only covered the needs of one-third of eligible individuals. That year, the legal community answered this call. Attorneys from 12 Arizona law firms joined forces to address the growing issue of providing equal access to justice. The Arizona Equal Justice Campaign was formed. Former State Bar presidents John Bouma, then-chairman of Snell & Wilmer, and Don Bivens, then-partner at Meyer, Hendricks & Bivens, took the lead and began encouraging law firms to make a three-year commitment to the campaign. Firms were asked to pledge the equivalent of two billable hours per attorney annually, and those dollars would be allocated to Community Legal Services, DNA People’s Legal Services, and Southern Arizona Legal Aid to provide thousands of individuals with free expert legal aid, assistance, and direct representation in court.

Through the Arizona Equal Justice Foundation, 100% of Arizonans who qualify for poverty assistance are served by three legal aid providers:

SOUTHERN ARIZONA LEGAL AID DNA PEOPLE’S LEGAL SERVICES

Arizona Equal Justice Foundation was a standalone entity for many years, handling donations and distributions, but without much attention paid to a long-term investment strategy. In 2017, the collaborating attorneys partnered with ACF to manage the fund. “The transition of our fund management to ACF was really a home run for all involved,” said Matthew Feeney, Chair of the Arizona Equal Justice Foundation and Chair of Snell & Wilmer. “Our endowment is growing, the individuals who did the administrative work could get back to their day jobs, and we can now focus on bringing in new firms and revenue sources.” Today, the Arizona Equal Justice Foundation stays true to its original mission by providing approximately $300,000 annually to the three legal service providers identified by its founders. Matthew Feeney from Snell & Wilmer, Stephen Savage from Ballard Spahr, and Timothy Berg from Fennemore serve as the executive leadership team and encourage their peers from across the state to contribute to support partners like Lillian Johnson, who has served as Executive Director of Community Legal Services since 1982. Community Legal Services is committed to increasing fairness in the civil justice system by advocating, litigating, and educating on behalf of Arizona’s most underserved communities. They operate in five counties including Maricopa, Yuma, La Paz, Mojave, and Yavapai, serving approximately 20,000 clients and handling almost 8,000 cases annually. DNA People’s Legal Services provides free, culturally appropriate, civil legal aid in tribal, state, and federal courts to qualifying residents in geographically isolated portions of Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. They have offices in the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Nation, Flagstaff, and Farmington, serving 1,700 individuals and benefiting 3,710 additional family members in 2017 alone. Southern Arizona Legal Aid provides services for nine counties (Pima, Pinal, Gila, Cochise, Santa Cruz, Navajo, Apache, Graham, and Greenlee) and 11 Native American communities. In 2017, their attorneys, support staff, and volunteers provided legal assistance to more than 5,700 low-income clients and benefiting more than 12,400 individual Arizonans.

ARIZONA UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS RELIEF FUND The Arizona Undocumented Workers Relief Fund was established at ACF in 2020 by more than 20 community leaders and organizations across Arizona. The fund supports undocumented working individuals and families living in mixedstatus households who were ineligible for pandemic era stimulus checks and unemployment benefits, despite their contributions to Arizona’s economy.

Since inception, the Arizona Undocumented Workers Relief Fund has raised over $2.1 million from the fund’s collaborative partners— some of whom are pictured here—and individual donors. Through the power of collaboration in both fundraising and grantmaking, the fund has distributed nearly all the dollars raised to support 3,716 households. A total of 15,308 community members have been supported, including 6,937 children. Each individual has received an average of $500, helping these families pay their rent, feed their children, and pay their bills during the uncertainty of this past year.

Guillermina from Tempe shared that her husband had died four months earlier and had previously paid all the bills. She had been unable to pay the rent and was overwhelmed with stress and concern for her two children. The support from the Arizona Undocumented Workers Relief Fund came at the right time. Armando from Phoenix was laid off because of the pandemic. He could not find work and was filled with anxiety and stress thinking about caring for his two boys. “The grant is a blessing that has saved my family,” said Armando. It provided relief and restored his dignity. 20

We opened the Red Moon Ale House in June 2019 and had already experienced our share of setbacks. The pandemic not only hindered our progress but nearly collapsed our dreams. Every bit of grant money helped us stay alive and we are forever thankful.

DOWNS AND UPS. At the height of the pandemic, Ramiro was forced to reduce his restaurant staff from 52 to seven. Unfortunately, decisions on downsizing and shutting doors permanently were not unique to Ramiro and the Red Moon Ale House, as restaurants and bars across Yuma and the entire state were impacted drastically by COVID-19. The City of Yuma COVID-19 Small Business Grant Relief Program offered small businesses, restaurants, and bars experiencing economic distress an opportunity for funding. Among other funding sources, Red Moon Ale House received a grant through this program, helping to alleviate some of the burden felt from the unprecedented revenue loss. The red moon symbolizes new beginnings for many tribal people, including Ramiro who belongs to the Quechan tribe. As businesses work tirelessly to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, Ramiro and his business partner Raven Davis hope a tide of positive change is on the horizon for restaurants like theirs.

SCIENCE VORTEX STEAM CENTER is harnessing the power of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics to encourage children to think critically, problem solve, and explore their creativity. Serving families across Cottonwood, Sedona, Jerome, Clarkdale, Cornville, and Camp Verde, the Science Vortex has become a pillar of the Verde Valley community. The fun, brightly colored space immerses children of all ages in interactive exhibits that demonstrate STEAM principles in action. During a visit to the Science Vortex, students have the opportunity to explore Tesla Coils using a funky plasma globe, build their own Rube Goldberg machine, test the wonders of physics with a rocket launcher, or even watch a topographical landscape come to life through an augmented reality sandbox. Since moving into its current space on a Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District campus in July 2020, the Science Vortex has become a powerful draw for families and schools alike. Since its launch, over 1,000 children have gotten to experience its lively environment. The center hosts regular programming, including weekly Makerspace Family and Little Learners STEM nights, as well as field trips, birthday parties, weekend workshops, and summer camps. The Science Vortex offers educational and enrichment opportunities that are often challenging to find in the smaller cities and towns of the Verde Valley, making it the first of its kind in the area. Laurie Altringer, founder of the Science Vortex, has been an educator for over 15 years. She’s always been passionate about both formal and informal education. Throughout her diverse teaching experiences in the western United States, Guatemala, and Abu Dhabi, she noticed 26

With the support of her family, friends, and the community, Laurie was able to launch the center as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2020. Since then, the Science Vortex has received over $45,000 in grant funding from the Rosenbluth Family Charitable Foundation and the Ellis Center for Educational Excellence, two supporting organizations of the Arizona Community Foundation. These funds helped the center establish its first exhibits and STEAM kits that are available for checkout at the Cottonwood Public Library, Sedona Public Library, and Camp Verde Community Library. The pursuit to help Verde Valley students discover their passion for science doesn’t end with the center. Next year, Laurie is partnering with the SciTech Institute to help launch a new program called Chief Science Officers. The program equips

Albert Alan’s aspirations are boundless, and he has the hard evidence to prove it. In 2017, Albert earned three concurrent degrees from the University of Arizona. This foundation in physiology, sociology, and neuroscience landed him in the UArizona College of Medicine, where he is pursuing both an M.S. in Cellular Molecular Medicine and an M.D. degree. Albert also serves in a research position for the Mayo Clinic’s Department of Neurosurgery and plans to become a board-certified neurosurgeon, all while overcoming his own health challenges. Throughout his education, the pursuit of knowledge has helped him better understand the world as a complex and often inequitable place. Combined with his own experience grappling with

homelessness during his teens, Albert has gained a unique perspective on how he can be a physician who leads with compassion. He sees an opportunity to meet his patients in their world by learning more about the racial and socioeconomic disparities that exist in healthcare. Albert’s goal is to help close those gaps, motivated by the chance to improve the quality of care for people of color and those experiencing homelessness. Over the years, Albert has received multiple scholarships managed by ACF, including the Guinn B. Burton Medical Scholarship, the Phoenix Pride

Scholarship, and the Robert Manring Scholarship. When Albert reflects on the value of his education and the ACF scholarships that made it possible, he can’t overstate how much it meant to him. “Education was literally my oxygen, because that’s all I had,” he said. “When you’re drowning, and nothing’s working out; when you have no family and you’re alone; when the only oxygen tank you have is a book—that was my life. That’s why you see all these degrees. They were my way of staying alive in this world.”

Ideas about what it means to be a “typical college student” continue to evolve every day. Many students face insurmountable tuition costs, familial obligations, and other life events that postpone their postsecondary education. Pat Carmody experienced this firsthand— after two years of college, she left to get married and start a family. When her children were young, she got a divorce and decided to finish her college education. Since she was over the age of 25, Pat was considered too old to qualify for many traditional student loan programs, but she worked hard and graduated from Notre Dame de Namur University one month after turning 30. After graduation, Pat opted for a job in real estate since it was one of the few equal opportunity industries for women at the time. Pat hasn’t forgotten the challenges she faced and lack of resources available to her as a student returning to education. In order to help non-traditional students like herself who might not otherwise be able to finish their education, Pat established the Pat Carmody Love of Education Scholarship Fund at ACF of Yavapai County. Since inception in 2016, the fund has distributed over $123,000 to students throughout Prescott and the Verde Valley. Joyce Driscoll is one of Pat’s scholarship recipients. Returning to college in her 50s, she is pursuing a degree in psychology from Grand Canyon University and hopes to become a trauma counselor. In addition to attending GCU, Joyce works at the Verde Valley Fire District, where she witnesses firsthand the trauma that first responders must cope with. “At times during my journey, I have felt like giving up,” said Joyce. “But then I remember that Pat has been there to support me and I do not want to disappoint her, so I soldier on.”

This year taught me that our communities are full of untapped talent and potential that are deserving of investment.

NEW PRIORITIES. April 2021 marked the first full year of operation for ALL In Education and the Arizona Community Foundation was instrumental in what marked a successful year. “At ALL In Education we believe the communities most impacted by education inequities should be the ones making decisions for all students,” said Stephanie, who serves as the organization’s Executive Director. “With this belief, we launched the Parent Educator Academy which is a free four-month training program that helps participants become better prepared to support their children in their educational journeys.” This pilot program has already graduated its first cohort of 27 parents, with some of them securing full-time employment at their child’s school and others looking to start parent support programs. Our communities are filled with talent, they just need the right investments to give them that jump start and ACF has been the partner that has helped make this program possible.

CHANGING LIVES, ONE STUDENT AT A TIME In public schools across Arizona there are promising eighth grade students who have a desire to set themselves up for future success by excelling in high school and pursuing a college education. Sponsors for Scholars, a scholarship fund at the Arizona Community Foundation, helps students bring their dreams to life by providing financial support and mentorship during this pivotal time. In the late 2000s, middle school educators Kendra Krause, Megan Gestson, and Chad Gestson were inspired by their exceptional students and wanted to create a program that would ensure their success. The puzzle pieces began to come together when Chad—or as his

32

students call him, “Dr. G”—met Jerry David through a mutual acquaintance. ACF donors Jerry and his wife Harryette had recently moved to Arizona and were looking for an opportunity to support local youth—Sponsors for Scholars turned out to be the perfect fit. With the financial crisis on the horizon, it was not long before the program would issue its first scholarships. Leo Alaniz attended Sunland Elementary and first met Ms. Gestson when she taught seventh grade math. He was recruited to attend Brophy College Preparatory, and his parents paid for his first year before lost wages caused the family to lose their home, leaving them unable to afford the tuition. Sponsors for Scholars stepped in to help cover his second year at Brophy and beyond. In Leo’s words, “From that moment, my life completely changed.” Miguel Gutierrez also knew Ms. Gestson when he was in middle school at Cesar E. Chavez Community School. After eighth grade, he was accepted into Brophy and received financial aid, but it wasn’t enough to cover his full tuition or expenses. Miguel received a scholarship from Sponsors for Scholars, along with

Martha Navarro attended Carl T. Smith Middle School when Dr. G was the principal. She worked hard and was eventually accepted to Xavier College Preparatory but wasn’t sure how she would cover tuition and other expenses. Sponsors for Scholars worked with her through her four years at Xavier, helping with anything she needed including school supplies and books, fees for exams, uniforms, and even a school trip to Washington D.C. where Martha visited monuments and met the late Congressman Ed Pastor—it was the first time she left Arizona. Sponsors for Scholars does not stop supporting students after high school. The intent is to help them succeed in college and beyond. While most of the students receive full-ride scholarships to college, the program covers the cost of college tours, and the three educators provide ongoing mentorship and advice on everything from which colleges to apply for to how to speak up in class. After 12 years, Sponsors for Scholars has supported a total of 56 students on their journey through high school and college. The size of the program and dedication of the educators who run it ultimately sold Jerry and Harryette on their financial investment. “We felt like these were kids who could succeed in college once they got through high school,” said Jerry. “It’s a small enough program where we can get to know each of the students on an individual level and really see the impact we make in their lives.”

Q U A L I T Y E D U C AT I O N

And that impact is tremendous. Today, Martha holds a BA from Grand Canyon University and was the first Sponsors for Scholars student to receive a Master’s degree, also from GCU. “I wouldn’t be here without the opportunities they gave me,” says Martha. She currently works in the counseling department, helping other students like herself. Miguel is an alumnus of Swarthmore who helped create a safe space for fellow migrant students while on campus, and now is back in the Valley working in IT at State Farm. Sponsors for Scholars sent him a camera when he was in college, which he passed on to his younger brother to launch his photography career. Leo graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in finance and spent several years in that industry before family health issues inspired him to go back to school to become a doctor. He leaned on his Sponsors for Scholars contacts for advice on selecting a medical school. Leo is currently enrolled in the Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community at the University of California, Irvine where he hopes to specialize in reconstructive plastic surgery or dermatology before landing a residency back home in Phoenix.

Frances McAllister’s legacy is nothing short of legendary. During her lifetime, the philanthropist supported countless Flagstaff nonprofits through generous gifts, board service, and a heartfelt belief in their importance to the community. Today, Frances’ passionate support of education lives on through her planned gift to ACF of Flagstaff. Since 2000, the Flagstaff P-12 Educational Resources Fund has granted $2.6 million to local organizations to help increase unique experiential learning opportunities for children in Flagstaff. Organizations apply for funds through the annual ACF of Flagstaff competitive grant cycle. A panel of volunteers rates the proposals based on Frances’ wish to support experiential learning and the whole child with an emphasis on the outdoors. The fund has supported programs led by United Way of Northern Arizona, Lowell Observatory, Grand Canyon Youth, The Arboretum at Flagstaff, Museum of Northern Arizona, and many more. The Arboretum was founded by Frances in 1981 and remained close to her heart throughout her life. The Arboretum has received numerous grants in support of its array of educational programming, including the EcoExplorers Summer Camps for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade. With the guidance of their counselors, campers get hands-on experience identifying native edible and medicinal plants, exploring the pond ecosystem, and navigating through the forest using a map and compass. Frances’ legacy is also reflected in the Museum of Northern Arizona’s programming for youth to learn more about the beauty, diversity, and cultural heritage of the Colorado Plateau. In addition to its exhibitions and Discovery Summer Camps, the Museum’s educator Mari SolidayLarsen hosts regular activities to engage visitors in experiential learning on-site. Using portable “art carts” that allow Mari to move throughout the space, children have the chance to participate in interactive sessions utilizing information they’ve learned during their visit.

years

Don Budinger often applies lessons learned from his career in global manufacturing to champion innovative ideas that improve Arizona’s education system. He has always been an ardent supporter of practices that work best for children, whether they attend public or charter schools.

36

After founding what became the world’s largest manufacturer of surface finishing chemicals used to make computer chips, the Budinger family transformed a passion for education into action. Don Budinger launched the Rodel Foundation of Arizona at the Arizona Community Foundation in 1999 with an initial investment of $33.8 million—the largest single gift ever made to ACF at that time. Through Don’s leadership and the work of the Rodel team, the supporting organization has since distributed over 1,800 grants and invested more than $50 million toward ensuring educational excellence for every student. Don has been a leading private sector champion for education in Arizona for more than two decades. Not only has he been a persistent and powerful voice for education reform, but he and the Budinger family have invested over $200 million to advance the missions of the Rodel Foundations in Arizona and Delaware, along with the private family foundation. Equally important, he has leveraged his corporate relationships and network to enhance education reform at all levels of government: local, state, and federal.

Don first realized the importance of improving Arizona’s K-12 education system during his time at the manufacturing company Rodel, Inc. While hiring high school graduates to perform highly technical and high paying jobs in its factories in America, Europe, and Asia, it became obvious that candidates in Europe and Asia were far better prepared to enter the workforce than their American counterparts. This inspired Don to focus on a strongly-held family value—to leave the country better off than it was given to us. To this day, Budinger family values help guide Rodel’s charitable work. After more than 20 years, his legacy includes elevating the status of great teachers and principals at all levels and providing resources to support their schools and classrooms. He has fought for superintendents and advocated vigorously to improve education funding statewide, especially for children experiencing poverty and facing educational challenges. When looking at the impact of Rodel, it’s clear that Don exemplifies the very best in community leadership, philanthropy, and dedication to creating a better Arizona.

“LIFE IS…”

DOCUMENTARY ON YOUTH SUICIDE IN ARIZONA

In Arizona, the rate of suicide among adolescents has consistently exceeded the national average. This statistic tells us that many young people are not getting connected to the help they need to save their lives. In response, a team of students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University produced a powerful documentary to educate Arizonans about the underlying factors contributing to youth suicide and spotlight resources and potential solutions.

In January more than 25 television stations across the state aired the half-hour, commercial-free documentary, including PBS.

The documentary, titled Life is…, was funded through a grant from the Arizona Community Foundation and supported by the Arizona Broadcasters Association. In addition to their work producing the documentary, the students spent a year reporting on those impacted, publishing in-depth stories and multimedia content covering mental health, isolation and loneliness, at-risk gene variants, the LGBTQ+ community, and more.

The youth suicide project follows a multi-year partnership between the Cronkite School and Arizona broadcasters to shed light on some of Arizona’s most pressing issues.

38

“This project has made important progress on an extremely pressing issue,” said Cronkite Visiting Professor David Ariosto who led the student production team. “The students not only told the stories of youth suicide in our state, but also helped uncover possible solutions to benefit our communities within Arizona and across the country.”

Lew Hoyt has led a life filled with athletic accomplishments, professional endeavors, and personal hardships that most of us could only imagine. As an accomplished track and field athlete at the University of Southern California—and one of the first athletes in the world to jump over seven feet—Lew won the National Championship in the high jump and was an alternate member of the USA Olympic teams in 1964 and 1968. He went on to pursue a profession as both a fighter pilot and commercial pilot for a combined total of nearly 50 years.

In 2005, Lew beat cancer and felt he had a new lease on life. He began giving back to his community through motivational speaking and coaching at Sedona Red Rock High School. He and his wife Nancy never had children, but they felt the students whose lives they touched were like family to them. In pursuit of Lew’s dream of making an enduring impact on the community, he and Nancy established two endowment funds at ACF of Sedona, both of which will benefit Sedona Red Rock High School students. One of the funds will support the school’s academic and athletic departments. The other fund will provide equipment to help Red Rock High athletes excel in their chosen sports. “Thanks to ACF, we discovered that we could give significantly without affecting our daily standard of living,” Lew said. Along with Lew’s 15 years of coaching and motivational speaking, these endowments help ensure his legacy by providing a lasting contribution to Sedona students and athletes.

HOUSING SECURITY CHALLENGE

A

rizona currently has the third most severe affordable housing shortage in the nation, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Solutions that tackle the housing crisis are in short supply while house and rental prices soar, eviction rates rise, and the number of people experiencing homelessness increases. That’s why the Arizona Community Foundation, in partnership with Morrison Institute for Public Policy at Arizona State University and The Arizona Republic, launched the Housing Security Challenge as the fourth prize offered under the New Arizona Prize banner. Designed to inspire collaborative, cross-sector ideas that address the lack of affordable housing, the challenge solicited innovative proposals centered on supportive services. Because of the close links between housing, racial inequality, economic and physical mobility, social work, public health, education, and more, applicants were asked to think beyond the construction of new housing units. After the challenge was launched in the fall of 2020, 13 applicant teams submitted housing solutions that benefit the most vulnerable among us. Each application received scores and comments from expert reviewers using four criteria: compelling, feasible, impactful, and scalable. In May 2021, five finalist teams pitched their projects to a selection committee composed of industry leaders. The winning team, The East Valley Senior Home Sharing Program, proved that they were up to the task. The team received $250,000 to launch their proposal, which will match older adults at risk of homelessness with roommates to share housing costs, companionship, and responsibilities. The program also uses an array of wraparound services to foster housing permanency, independent living, and saved lives. Led by Deborah Arteaga, Deborah Schaus, and Trinity Donovan, the group brings together resources from Tempe Community Action Agency, Aster Aging, AZCEND,

The Housing Security Challenge is the fourth prize offered under the New Arizona Prize banner. ASU’s Watts College of Public Service/Action Nexus on Homelessness, and Valley of the Sun United Way to interrupt the crisis of elderly homelessness in Maricopa County. Collectively, Aster Aging, AZCEND, and Tempe Community Action Agency serve more than 10,000 seniors in the East Valley each year, offering important services such as senior center activities, meal programs, and light in-home care. These three agencies plan to leverage their existing infrastructure and expertise to implement the innovative program. The ASU Watts College of Public Service/Action Nexus on Homelessness will perform localized research and program evaluation, an important component of identifying potential beneficiaries of the Senior Home Sharing Program. Valley of the Sun United Way will also play a key advisory role in the project, guiding the program in its diversity, equity, and inclusion framework and revenue models for program sustainability. A passion for providing realistic and cost-effective alternatives for vulnerable seniors is at the heart of the project. According to the Homeless Management Information System’s local reporting, seniors are the fastest-growing group of people experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County. The team knows that the need for programming and comprehensive support is critical, and they’re ready to change the outlook. “We put together this program with the goal of helping older adults stay healthy and independent, and to ensure they get to live with the dignity they deserve,” said Trinity Donovan, CEO of AZCEND. “The Senior Home Sharing Program will bring them so much more than just the roof over their heads. It will bring stability, well-being, and a life worth living.”

A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO COMMUNITY

Native American Connections has leveraged the Affordable Housing Predevelopment Loan Fund to launch ten development projects across the greater Phoenix metro area.

E

arlier this year, local nonprofit Native American Connections opened the doors to Dunlap Pointe, a new 54-unit permanent supportive housing community designed to serve chronically homeless individuals with a focus on Veterans. Dunlap Pointe shares a campus in Sunnyslope with the Patina Mountain Preserve, Native American Connections’ newest addiction recovery and wellness center. This type of collaborative affordable housing solution allows individuals to live independently while having access to on-site services that support residents through addiction recovery, relapse, loss of income, physical and mental health issues, and daily living skills. A holistic approach to the homelessness crisis is deeply embedded in Native American Connections’ practices. The nonprofit offers a continuum of affordable housing, health, and community development services at its 20+ sites across central Phoenix. Many of these sites, including Dunlap Pointe, have received funding from ACF’s Affordable Housing Predevelopment Loan Fund. In 2007, the Arizona Community Foundation joined forces with the Phoenix chapter of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to launch the Affordable Housing Predevelopment Loan Fund to address the state’s critical shortage of affordable housing.

44

Through collaboration with many local organizations and contributors, the fund has provided interest-free predevelopment loans to support over 50 housing projects led by nonprofits and community development corporations. Native American Connections leveraged a $100,000 loan as a resource to help kickstart the development of the $12 million Dunlap Pointe project. In addition, ACF, Phoenix Community Development & Investment Corporation, and the Phoenix IDA provided a $1.5 million loan to Native American Connections for Patina Mountain Preserve. “Support from our partners helps further our efforts in developing, building, and managing high-quality affordable housing and organizing community support to end homelessness,” said Diana Yazzie Devine, President & CEO of Native American Connections. Dunlap Pointe residents each have a private furnished studio apartment with a full kitchen, living room, and bedroom area, as well as access to free laundry facilities, exercise equipment, computer lab, television rooms, bike repair shop, and an outdoor amenity space that has sweeping views of Phoenix Mountain Preserve and downtown Phoenix. Although not all Dunlap Pointe residents are working on their recovery from substance abuse addiction, those who are may seek out specialized in-patient care at the Patina Mountain Preserve. Native American Connections interweaves research-based practices into its behavioral health programs, including the traditional healing talking circle and sweat lodge ceremonies.

s the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the country, it required Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona to quickly pivot to help keep Arizonans safe and healthy. The urgency of the pandemic called for quick action and BCBSAZ wasted no time working to support the health of their members, employees, community, and state. In early 2021, BCBSAZ employees answered the state’s call to action to help launch and run the 24/7 drivethrough COVID-19 vaccination site at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Starting in January, after just a week of prep time, BCBSAZ rallied more than 400 volunteers who staffed the site around the clock in the wind, sun, rain, and even some hail. On March 3, the state opened another drive-through vaccine clinic at ChandlerGilbert Community College, and BCBSAZ employees were asked to transition their support to staff this newest state-run site, where they continued to help Arizonans get vaccinated through April 3. During the three-month assignment, volunteers— including BCBSAZ employees, family, friends, and even some ACF team members—logged nearly 15,200 shifts and more than 145,000 hours. More than 491,000 vaccines were administered to Arizonans at the two BCBSAZ operated vaccination sites alone. In addition to the successful vaccine rollout, BCBSAZ responded quickly to ensure that communities across the state had cloth face masks to prevent the spread of the virus. They mailed nearly 660,000 face masks to tribal communities, employers, school districts, grocery stores, food banks, and other community organizations across the state. Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, volunteer hours shifted to a virtual setting and they offered over 267 online education sessions on a variety of topics including substance use disorder, mental health, diabetes, social determinants of health, vaccine safety, and workplace inclusivity. Annually, BCBSAZ sets statewide goals focused on improving community health—this year aiming to reduce the trend in opioid-related deaths. A CREATIVE APPROACH TO COVID RELIEF It all started with the Hope for All Humanity Bell, made by foundry artisan Chris Hardy. This new Cause Bell was introduced in April 2020 during Ring for Hope—a collective worldwide bell-ringing event organized by Cosanti Originals to unite us during quarantine. Nearly four decades ago, Cosanti Originals introduced its Bells for a Cause Program. As a subsidiary of the nonprofit Cosanti Foundation, the iconic boutique bell-making operation well understood the fundraising challenges nonprofits face. Since inception, a portion of the sales proceeds from over 30 different bronze Cause Bell designs have supported numerous charitable organizations in the arts, healthcare, education, and nature conservancy.

The $20,000 raised through this unique partnership was part of the nearly $9.5 million in grant funding that was distributed to nonprofits across the state as they dealt with the immediate impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Cosanti Foundation is just one of hundreds of businesses and individuals who contributed to the fund. Their gift epitomizes the inspiring sight of witnessing organizations and community members come together to support one another in creative ways.

But last year was different. Instead of earmarking a portion of the sales proceeds from each bell to different causes, Cosanti Originals and The Cosanti Foundation designated the Arizona COVID-19 Community Response Fund at the Arizona Community Foundation to receive its charitable contribution. $16 from every single bell in the Bells for a Cause Collection sold between April 2020 through March 2021 was channeled into this fund in order to maximize the impact of these gifts.

“The Hope for All Humanity Bell symbolizes hope for nonprofits and small businesses statewide as they continue to provide necessary services and creative outlets to Arizona communities,” said Vickie Mayer, Cosanti Originals General Manager. “We are thankful for all of our customers who carried us through this difficult year. Their generosity made it possible for us to make this donation to ACF so that other organizations can do the same.”

Ms. Amanda Aguirre serves as President & CEO of the Regional Center for Border Health, Inc., an organization committed to improving the quality of life for Yuma County residents and migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Like many nonprofits in the last year and a half, Ms. Aguirre and her team were forced to pivot their operations to focus on preventing further spread of COVID-19. ACF of Yuma awarded the Regional Center for Border Health $20,000 to provide COVID-19 screening and testing along with transportation of refugees to local lodging and shelters under humanitarian parole. “It hasn’t been easy, but it is our job to provide the medical care that migrants and those seeking political asylum need,” said Ms. Aguirre. Her commitment to public service and healthcare is exceptional. Since becoming the first female and first Hispanic to represent Yuma and La Paz counties in the Arizona State House of Representatives (2001) and in the Arizona State Senate (2006-2010), Ms. Aguirre has been a proponent of structural reform to the behavioral and medical health sectors across the state. Under her leadership, the Regional Center for Border Health joined the AZ-CA Humanitarian Coalition. This coalition works to assist migrants in their journey once they’ve crossed the border, particularly getting migrants prepared to travel to shelters across the state or the airport if a plane ticket has been purchased. The center has played an unparalleled role in this process by screening migrants for COVID-19, providing other medical services that might be needed, and organizing travel arrangements. Year-to-date, the agency has served over 4,000 migrant families.

U.S.-Mexico border communities represent a confluence of people, language, food, and culture. Much beauty comes from the melding of these communities, including the impact of the Naco Wellness Initiative, an organization providing medical and wellness services to the minds and bodies of those with limited resources in “Ambos Naco,” the cross-border community that encompasses both Naco, Sonora and Naco, Arizona. The Naco Wellness Initiative collaborates with bi-national healthcare providers that include both volunteer clinicians and paid Promotoras— trusted community members who empower their peers through public health education—while respecting and embracing the values and culture of local residents. Services extend beyond dayto-day medical healthcare and treatment and include community gardening, food distribution, health education, exercise classes, and social enterprise development. The Cambia Tu Vida program, which translates as change your life, is a cornerstone of their diseaseprevention work and was funded in part by ACF of Cochise. A component of the program is the development of family and school garden projects that provide tools, seeds, irrigation, training, and supervision. This enables individuals to grow organic, fresh fruits and vegetables on their own property to feed their families and neighbors at a fraction of the cost of grocery store produce. In 2020, Naco Wellness Initiative’s dedicated team transformed an empty lot in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Naco into a 1.5 acre community garden. Jardín Orgánico San José is a labor of love surrounded by a living native fence structure built from 16,800 stalks of ocotillo. Volunteers arrive around 6 a.m. to pick fresh produce from 19 varieties of nutritious vegetables. Before morning is over, squash, cucumbers, peppers, onions, green beans, and more are distributed to local families to fill their dinner tables.

THE POWER OF ENDOWMENT: RAYMOND HUGER FUND FOR MENTAL HEALTH The importance placed on mental health and wellness is evolving each day. In the past year and a half alone, conversations around mental health have become front and center as we face the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Endowed funds have the power to address challenges facing communities today while honoring the wishes of those who had the foresight to build charitable capital for future needs. Dr. Raymond Huger, a psychiatrist who practiced for over 50 years in Phoenix, created the Raymond Huger Fund for Mental Health at ACF to address mental health challenges facing communities throughout Arizona. Since its establishment in 1987, the fund has supported organizations like Prescott Noon Lions Foundation, The Poore Medical Clinic, Gompers Habilitation Center, Southeastern Arizona Behavioral Health Services, and many more.

PIVOT AND SHIFT. In an unusual year, Russ navigated the challenges brought on by the pandemic in his own practice as Senior Vice President & Private/Institutional Client Advisor for Bank of America Private Bank while continuing to lead the Professional Advisory Board at ACF. Connecting via technology instead of in-person provided new opportunities to build deeper relationships and really focus on what matters most for colleagues and clients alike. At the top of that list: charitable giving, which Russ believes is an essential component of any discussion about long-term financial planning. “This was an exceptional year, filled with twists and turns that forced everyone to change course,” said Russ. “I feel privileged to have been a part of an organization that is bringing communities together and supporting advisors as we all adapt to this new reality.” ACF intentionally partners with advisors like Russ to support their firms and clients as they integrate charitable gifts into financial and estate plans.

LEGACY DONORS

We celebrate our Legacy Donors— generous individuals and families who have chosen to support the causes that matter to them through gifts that are planned today and will be realized beyond their lifetimes. Endowed gifts entrusted to ACF or a regional affiliate through a will or trust leave a lasting legacy that benefits both current and future generations.

BEING CREATIVE.

62

M I - A I PA R R I S H

Suddenly locked away, it took next-level creativity and innovation to cut through the noise and communicate effectively and empathetically with family, colleagues, clients, and students.

BEING CREATIVE. Mi-Ai used creative approaches and technology to interact successfully, starting with flipping students from a highly interactive in-person class to faces on a screen overnight. Through purposeful online engagement and social media techniques, she took on difficult topics in refreshing ways, gathering diverse points of view in meaningful dialogue. She learned not only how to teach virtually for her role as Sue-Clark Johnson Professor in Media Innovation and Leadership at ASU, but also how to fundraise for nonprofits she supports, host events, accomplish projects with people she’s only met online, and advocate for issues such as health, democracy, and racial equity. Facing anti-Asian hate, Mi-Ai did what she does best by educating through authentic communications. She shared her personal story to help others learn and heal. “This year was horrible, extraordinary, and humbling,” said Mi-Ai, “Ultimately, our ability to adapt and see things through different lenses will make us all stronger.” M I - A I I S A L S O A N AC F B OA R D M E M B E R .

ARIZONA COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

We are Arizonans and this is our community foundation. Our communities matter more than ever before. Faced with the stark reality of inequities made more apparent by the pandemic, we have chosen to act. That’s what a community foundation does. We help put grief, anger, compassion, empathy, and words into action. We convene on the tough questions. We support and invest in those seeking solutions. For more than four decades, the Arizona Community Foundation has embodied the mission “To lead, serve, and collaborate to mobilize enduring philanthropy for a better Arizona.” We cannot lay claim to a better Arizona until it is better for all of us.
