WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Since 1957, the Arizona Humane Society has fostered the belief that every pet deserves a good life. What once began as a small shelter for homeless animals has since become the state’s largest nonprofit animal welfare and protection agency, as well as the state’s designated responder for companion animals in distress during natural disasters.

As an open intake facility that accepts animals regardless of breed, age or medical condition, AHS prepares daily for an average of 121 new arrivals.

They come to us as injured strays, surrendered pets whose owners can no longer care for them, neglect and abuse confiscations who require protective custody and those who have simply been abandoned.

Regardless of the hardships they have faced, all deserve a second chance at a good life. AHS is proud to celebrate the joy that pets bring to our lives.

As the community’s needs grow, AHS is committed to creating thoughtful, innovative and lifesaving programs devoted to pets and the people in their lives.

As a nonprofit organization, AHS receives no government funding and relies solely on private donations. AHS is able to save thousands of lives because of the generous ways in which you help.

ADOPTIONS AHS’ compassionate spirit helps lead our fight against pet overpopulation, and we are dedicated to finding forever homes for the pets in our care. AHS offers many adoption locations and programs devoted to homeless animals of all ages, sizes and breeds.

DONATE While the needs of every animal AHS cares for are different, through naming opportunities, planned gifts, tributes and shelter wish list items, you can directly impact the life of a homeless animal. And for lifelong supporters, AHS’ Legacy Circle and enrollment in our Continuing Care program ensures your pet will be cared for should anything happen to you.

EMERGENCY ANIMAL MEDICAL TECHNICIAN™ (EAMT™) PROGRAM/SECOND CHANCE ANIMAL HOSPITAL™ From car engine and canal rescues to animal cruelty investigations, EAMTs rush to the aid of tens of thousands of sick and injured animals throughout the Valley. Those animals are then cared for in AHS’ Second Chance Animal Hospital, the largest shelter-based trauma center in the southwest.

ALTERNATIVE PLACEMENT PROGRAMS AHS’ alternative placement department ensures that pets receive a second chance through means other than traditional adoptions by partnering with over 125 Valley rescue groups and organizations. AHS also assists those in times of need through programs such as Project Active Duty and Project Assist.

OUTREACH/EDUCATION AHS is proud to share its mission through shelter tours and public information booths. AHS’ Humane Education program offers classroom presentations, scout programs, seasonal day camps and birthday parties.

VOLUNTEER Just as AHS began over half a century ago, passionate volunteers continue to grace the lives of our shelter pets.

Whether assisting in AHS’ thrift stores, retail outlets or in the shelter, AHS volunteers lend their hearts to random acts of kindness each day.

VETERINARY SERVICES Our commitment to pets is our commitment to you.

SPAY/NEUTER AND WELLNESS CLINICS In our commitment to alleviating the pet overpopulation crisis, AHS offers two public clinics and a mobile clinic dedicated to providing affordable and accessible spay/neuter services. AHS also offers low-cost vaccinations and microchipping.

VETERINARY CLINIC Our AAHA accredited clinic features a dedicated veterinary team who provides quality and compassionate medical care to pets in need within our community. A range of general and surgical services are available to ensure that your pet lives a full and healthy lifestyle.

WE ENVISION a world in which all people regard companion animals as lifelong, valued family members; embrace their responsibility for the welfare of animals; and respect, value and protect the animals with whom we share this earth.

FOSTER CARE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM A program that truly expands the walls of AHS, the foster care program saves the lives of animals as everyday people make extraordinary contributions to ill and injured animals by opening their hearts and homes until that pet is ready for adoption.

SHOP FOR PAWS AND CAUSE The Valley’s first shelter-operated retail and adoption centers, Petique and Petopia, offer on-site adoptions, pet-friendly merchandise and specialty items including AHS signature t-shirts. In addition, AHS thrift stores offer amazing deals on one-of-a-kind items. All stores are tax-free and 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the homeless animals of AHS.
