THE EVOLUTION of ‘the minimalists’ THE
Collaborative Consumption and Sociability Collaborative consumption has increased the level of sociability amongst those benefitting from the services. This shift in the society has challenged individual’s perception of privacy, and new lifestyles are to emerge from this shift. The following proposal attempts to cater to this way of life.
EVOLUTION of the minimalists
As part of the requirement of the studio, an app is designed that collects a database of individuals’ perceptions of privacy and their willingness to share each room in a dwelling. Designers would then use such information gathered to design a living situation suitable for the individuals’ specific lifestyle. Based on the app, one extreme condition could be considered in which a group of people are willing to share every room in a dwelling. ‘The minimalists’ are a group of individuals residing all over the world who seek to “live an intentional life”. They have come to the realization that material possession does not bring happiness. They are willing to let go of their material possessions in order to be able to contribute to their society and enrich their own lives. As such, they would make perfect candidates for this experimental housing. Embracing the benefits of collaborative consumption, one can propose a housing alternative that is based on the same principles as this model. Imagine instead of owning a place to live, a community could have shared access to the same services without the need to own anything. This is a shift from ownership to usership. Since the level of sociability has gone up, the gap between privacy and publicness has diminished. “Fostering a renewed appreciation in community”, life can now be lived in public and there is little desire for isolation. The proposed site, previously owned by the government of Canada, is now in the process to be developed under Comprehensive Development (CD) zoning. The existing building on the site, known as the RCMP Administration building, is proposed to be re-used. As an additional program, a re-cycling centre is proposed in hopes of bringing awareness to waste consumption, creating a sense of community on a larger scale, and financing the project. step I
