Aficionados Retreat Collaboration of Ideas

This project saw the coming together of ideas in the form of a group project. Early finding were manifested into an mechanical installation that corresponds as a uniform that would be used as a sensory and symbolic interpretation for our understanding of the 2012 Olympic games and its respective context.

Faculty of Salvage & Reclamation Initial Design

The site chosen for the intervention is the old abandoned station house opposite Stratford bus station and Westfield shopping centre. The narrative depicts the building being reclaimed by marginalised groups of society. The strategy is to de-construct the old building and reuse any salvageable materials by recycling and building them back into the structure to create an new architectural language that has culminated to be subversive and unconventional. The design intends to be a symbolic statement of anti corporate agenda. The programme is underlined with subtle subversion by being reminiscent of the ‘wheeler dealer’ culture. Therefore, the ‘Faculty’ becomes a centre where material salvaging, construction, demolitions and recycling can be learnt and practiced. The user will be able to add to the architecture by exercising the skills they have learnt.

Speculative sketch/drawings Structural Strategy Initial Design Final Design Proposal

Once i decided to approach the intervention with a less community services type attitude, the design started to mature with a more gritty depth and unsettling character. These elements would blossom in the final design proposal for the project.

Final Design Proposal

With the Design Brief, Client Narrative and Programme at their most refined, a specific stylistic approach was required to best illustrate the whole story. The final pieces was carved into 2.5D relief drawings which were layered on top of the internal frame work of the design. This allowed the final pieces to be viewed from different angles revealing different perspectives and telling different stories. Once the desired effect was achieved, contextual detail was drawn in by hand and partial structural detail was also added. I believe this style of drawing suited the project well as it set the tone and elevated the sensory experience by giving the proposal depth and character.

Detail Section Through Displacement Folly The existing facade undergoes a slow deconstruction and fabric re assembly where salvaged materials bought in to fulfill structural roles are carefully constructed around the facade in an ambiguous manner. The reasons for this is to create an incremental distortion of boundaries and space where the occupants leave a disruptive yet delicate footprint and also to practice unconventional construction methods that might be used in the future (1) Roofing - taking dismantled materials from salvageable sources (2) Roofing is connected to a simple truss that helps spread the load (3) Hollow brickwork is reformed around a steel reenforcement (4) reconstructed salvaged timber decking (5) Extruded brick work hung off steel beam reenforced with steel rods and plates (6) Main Structural frame work from steel beam and columns connected to existing brick work (7) Salvaged material with flat surfaces - steel platforms, OSB, Timber off cuts (8) Salvaged brick work columns (9) Existing wall construction (10) Salvaged brick work incrementally layered out into the public realm (1)

Canning Town Caravansarai Competition entry

The brief states the need to design a poetic and useful structure for the Caravansarai Community site located in Canning town, London . As a team, we implemented a design strategy using only reclaimed and recycled materials. The concept revolves around the existing wisteria plant on the site which informs the nature and life cycle of the project. The programme of the project includes a horticultural gardening facility, a salvage/recycle yard and a small community workshop in which new things can be made from additional reclaimed material. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ctcaravanserai/8481629391/in/set-72157632790088066

Lianmei Beijing Office building facade design

The client requirement was a facade that was clean and simple, while amplifying a serious cooperate image. The design allows for good view out of the office.

The linear mullions elongate the height restricted structure to give it a grand presence around its neighboring buildings. The glass openings adopt a rare extrusion method with gives the facade more ventilation and an elegant flare

Henan Zhengzhou Guangcheng District Urban Planning

This urban planning project was based in the historical city of Guangcheng. The city is bound by an ancient wall that has been preserved for hundreds of years. The idea was to implement a green strategy that would pedestrian friendly and highlight the relevance of the historical wall.

A green belt is designed to extend the perimeter of the old city. It is a continuous public space with amenities and activity. The belt breaks into paths that lead into different historical sites within the city creating pedestrian friendly tour routes that the public can embark on.

Henan Province Competition winning bridge design

The Henan bridge project aims to connect the main land to an off shore island resort. The concept incorporates Chinese traditions to do with the animal kingdom. Playing on the strengths and speed of different animals, the design draws a dynamic sequence of movement and agility to compliment the journey over the bridge. The functionality incarates into 5 resorts of luxury and entertainment. Access will be enabled through a centre line tram system.
