Honoring a Fallen Comrade Azle police took part in a statewide effort to honor fallen Houston Police Officer Darren Goforth Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. by displaying the flashing red and blue lights on their patrol vehicles. The Azle Police Department did so atop the highly visible Loop 344 bridge across SH 199 known locally as “the Ski Jump.” During the one-minute display of respect, the officers gathered near the center of the bridge in salute to the fallen officer. Reno gunfi re incidents raise question Currently there are no regulations about discharging firearms anywhere in town BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN The right to bear arms is one vehemently defended by many – if not most – Texans. But gunfi re in a couple of Reno neighborhoods has some residents on edge. While there is an ordinance on the books governing subdivisions located in unincorporated portions of Parker

County, the city of Reno has no ordinance of any kind related to the discharge of a fi rearm, according to Reno Mayor Lynda Stokes. Precinct One Commissioner George Conley said the county ordinance – which requires a minimum of 10 acres in order for shooting to take place – is of no affect inside any municipality.

‘Monster’ sentenced to 60 years in prison Two others awaiting trial BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN A monster will spend the next 60 years in prison for the role he played in the sadistic torture and murder of a man in the 6100 block of Big Wood Court in July 2012. Staten William “Monster” Corbett was sentenced Sept. 3, to 60 years for murder and 20 years for tampering with evidence (corpse) related to the death of Earnest Lackey. Corbett was convicted of both crimes in May. Sentencing was delayed in order for a pre-sentencing investigation (PSI) to be completed. Judge Scott Wisch ordered the sen-

tences. The trial in the 372nd District Court was prosecuted by Assistant Criminal District Attorneys Art Clayton and Lisa Callaghan. During the trial, the jury heard evidence that Corbett, his co-defendants Ronnie Wayne Freeman and Jimmy “Jimbo” Lee Riddle, and several witnesses, including the victim, consumed methamphetamine and gathered at Freeman’s trailer off Tenderfoot Trail one night in early July 2012. She also admitted that some of the shooters are volunteer firefighters, but said the owner of the property has agreed to stop shooting while officials consider their options. BriarR e n o V F D C h i e f Shannon Smithers has been “very helpful” as it relates to an ongoing police investigation into the shooting, Stokes added. “They (neighbors) have not been able to show us a bullet hole in a building, but we did find bullet holes in trees on adjacent property,” Stokes said. And even though shooting is not regulated by the city of Reno, “State law says you can’t shoot across property lines,” Stokes emphasized.

Animals shot Almost entirely rural, the city of Reno is the second-largest city geographically in Parker County. In keeping with that rurality, there are no city ordinances to address animal, fireworks, or discharging a weapon. It’s a quandary for Stokes,

The city of Azle was awarded the Keep Texas Beautiful Certificate of Merit for a program that prevented 37,500 pounds of hazardous waste and electronics waste, tires, large metal items, and personal confidential documents from being illegally dumped in the Texas environment. Azle residents participate in a brush compost program that diverts between 17,000-23,000 yards of brush material annually from the landfill and is used as mulch and compost at city parks. Big Belly Recycling containers are located in all city parks, wrapped with graphics from local Azle ISD students. All these programs have allowed Azle residents to meet the mission of Keep Texas Beautiful through litter prevention, beautification and waste reduction. the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas, was asked by the three co-defendants to recite the “14 words,” a doctrine or belief of the ABT. Upon his inability to recite the phrase, Lackey was attacked by “Monster” and his co-defendants. Witnesses in an adjoining room testified to hearing screams from the victim, and observing Lackey being kicked, punched, choked, and tortured. Lackey’s decomposed body was discovered August 2, 2012 in a rural area northeast of Eagle Mountain Lake, wrapped in a blanket and tied with yellow cord. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office reported Lackey's hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage exhibited signs of being cut, slashed or stabbed by a sharp-bladed object, and Lackey suffered several broken ribs and a broken bone in his spine at or around the time of his death. In closing statements during the sentencing hearing, ACDA

Lisa Callaghan compared the violence against the victim to something from “Dante’s 7th Circle of Hell ... What they did to the deceased was beyond belief.” Although he did not testify during the trial, Corbett took the stand during the punishment phase and attributed his lack of

Staten “Monster” Corbett impulse control to PTSD and Anti-Social Personality Disorder. Blaming the brunt of the attack on his co-defendant, Ronnie Wayne Freeman, Corbett admitted only to punching and

“wrestling with” the victim, and then dumping his body in a wooded area “near Freeman’s trailer.” Lackey’s body was ultimately discovered miles away at a different location. ACDA Art Clayton said the actions taken by Corbett and his co-defendants that night demonstrated a “diabolical separation from humanity.” Clayton closed by cautioning that Corbett “has no inner thought of change ... And that's what makes it so important for him to be removed from society.” While giving some deference to Corbett’s mental health diagnoses, Wisch noted during sentencing Corbett’s record of reoffending quickly after each release from custody: “It doesn’t matter if someone can’t follow the rules or won’t follow the rules – the effect on society is the same. The ‘why’ might make people angry or sympathetic, but violence is violence.” Freeman and Riddle remain in the Tarrant County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond each as they await separate trials related to Lackey’s murder.

The proposed amendment would increase this exemption to $25,000, starting in the tax year beginning January 1, 2015. In order to reflect the increased exemption on the homestead of a person 65 years of age or older or a disabled person, the proposed amendment would provide a reduction to the current limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes. The proposed amendment would protect school districts from all or part of the revenue loss by authorizing an appropriation of funds according to formulas set by the legislature. In addition, the proposed amendment would authorize the legislature to prohibit a political subdivision from reducing or repealing a homestead exemption adopted by the political subdivision. Finally, the proposed amendment would prohibit the imposition of a tax on the conveyance of real property, but would not prohibit the imposition of a business tax measured by business activity, a tax on the production of minerals, a tax on the issuance of title insurance, or a change in the rate of a tax in existence on January 1, 2016.

The amendment did not apply to surviving spouses of veterans who died before 2011. This amendment would extend the exemption in such cases. The proposed amendment would apply only to ad valorem taxes imposed for a tax year beginning on or after January 1, 2016. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a 100 percent or totally disabled veteran who died before the law authorizing a residence homestead exemption for such a veteran took effect.” Proposition Number 3 (SJR 52) SJR 52 proposes a constitutional amendment to repeal the requirement for the Comptroller of Public Accounts, the Commissioner of the General Land Office, the Attorney General, and any other offi cers elected statewide to reside in Austin, Texas, the state capital. Under current law, these statewide elected officers are required to reside in the capital of the State of Texas while in offi ce. This amendment would not apply to the residency requirement for the Governor. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment repealing the requirement that state offi cers elected by voters statewide reside in the state capital.”

Police officers issued four citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and one for public intoxication. Lucas Duane Davis Proposition Number 4 (HJR 73) HJR 73 proposes a constitutional amendment that would grant the legislature the authority to pass statutes to allow a professional sports team charitable foundation to conduct charitable raffl es under the terms and conditions imposed by general law. The laws passed under this authority may provide that the professional sports team charitable foundation may use proceeds from such charitable raffles to pay reasonable advertising, promotional, and administrative expenses. Any law enacted by this provision only applies to entities defi ned as professional sports team charitable foundations on January 1, 2016. Additionally, any law enacted by this provision may only allow charitable raffl es to be conducted at games hosted at the home venue of the professional sports team associated with a professional sports team charitable foundation. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to permit professional sports team charitable foundations to conduct charitable raffles.” Proposition Number 5 (SJR 17) SJR 17 proposes a constitutional amendment which would increase from 5,000 to 7,500 the maximum total population threshold of a county that is allowed to construct and maintain private roads as long as the county imposes a reasonable charge for the work. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment to authorize counties with a population of 7,500 or less to perform private road construction and maintenance.” Proposition Number 6 (SJR 22) SJR 22 proposes a constitutional amendment that would add the right to hunt, fi sh and harvest wildlife, including by use of traditional methods, in the Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution. This right would be subject to laws and regulations intended to conserve

and manage wildlife and to preserve the future of hunting and fishing. The proposed amendment would establish hunting and fi shing as the preferred method of managing and controlling wildlife in Texas. The proposed amendment is not intended to affect any law or provision related to trespass, property rights or eminent domain, and would not prevent the legislature from authorizing a municipality to regulate the discharge of a firearm in a populated area in the interest of safety. The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment recognizing the right of the people to hunt, fi sh, and harvest wildlife subject to laws that promote wildlife conservation.” Proposition Number 7 (SJR 5) SJR 5 proposes a constitutional amendment to dedicate a portion of revenues from (1) the state sales and use tax, and (2) the tax imposed on the sale, use, or rental of a motor vehicle, to the State Highway Fund (SHF). Under current law, these funds would be deposited to the General Revenue Fund. Money deposited to the SHF is intended to be used only to construct, maintain, or acquire rights-of-way for public roadways other than toll roads; or to repay certain transportation-related debt. The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment dedicating certain sales and use tax revenue and motor vehicle sales, use, and rental tax revenue to the state highway fund to provide funding for nontolled roads and the reduction of certain transportation-related debt.”

When your grandson says: “I wanna rock!”

I

’m not gonna lie – I was beginning to get a little worried. My eight-year-old grandson Link and I were driving to town to buy a car part. I put the radio on the Kids XM station. After a couple of songs he said the most beautiful words, ones I had dreamed of hearing: “Can we listen to some rock?” I wept a silent tear. Both of my daughters married churchy sorts. While I raised my angels to love rock ‘n’ roll – I have an indelible image of the first child shaking her booty between two giant speakers to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” – the loud stuff kinda goes to the wayside

I can kinda when it comes to church. sing like Axl Oh, there’s some Christian rock muRose. One of my few rare talents is that rocker, but it made for some fun listen-

ing. “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac is kinda wimpy early on. But midstream, the instruments fade then begin coming in one at a time – first, that bumpy bass arrives then comes drums that get louder and louder. “Listen right here,” I bellowed. The drums equalled the bass in volume then the searing, screeching guitar solo hit. It was happiness in the cab of a pickup as we bounded in our seats. Phil Collins was next. “In the Air Tonight” would’ve been perfect. I could’ve told him about the years in the outfield at The Ballpark in Arlington where thousands air-drummed to one famous part.

But the song was “I Don’t Care Anymore” which worked out because most of the song is just Collins singing and drumming. “It’s pretty hard to drum and sing at the same time,” I shouted, then the DJ backed me up on that. It’s a great relief to have someone else to rock with. Oh, my daughters still dig all the tunes we used to bounce around to. Like them, Link was getting the primal, almost guttural thrill and energy of rock music. That made an old man happy. And to think! There’s still Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, AC/DC, The Who... Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and knows Link will love Keith Moon.

Letter to the editor Support Azle PD with blue bows Azle has a fantastic Police Department! Our police force is not just the men and women who come face to face with lawbreakers on the street every day, but also an amazing group of people who work behind the scenes – dispatchers, office staff, reserve officers, cadets, volunteers, etc. The attacks on police officers in Texas and other states in the past 10 weeks is very serious and dishearten-

ing. To think that someone would take the life of a person just because they wear a police uniform and take an oath to protect and to serve the lives of others is just mind-boggling to me. Besides thanking the members of our police force when you see them, shaking their hand, or giving them a wave when you drive past them, join me in displaying a big blue bow or ribbons on your mailbox, house, vehicle, tree, or bush in your yard, or any other way you can think of. Get creative. I'm not much of a bow maker, so I reached out to the ladies at Queen Bee's Garden, and they made

me a big beautiful bow for my mailbox. Please join me in showing your support for the outstanding members of our Azle Police Department. David L. Smith

hen I travel nearly anywhere, especially in this great state, I generally see something that gives me an idea for a column. A few weeks ago in Bonham, north of the Metroplex and nearly to the Red River, I saw a fort, actually a replica, called Fort Inglish. No, nobody misspelled anything. The man responsible for the fort and the town was named Bailey Inglish. Although born in South Carolina in 1793, Inglish at age six moved with his family to Kentucky. By the time he was 24 years old, he lived in what is now Arkansas Territory, which claimed land on both sides of the Red River. He married Jane Sloan, and the residents of Miller County, Arkansas elected him sheriff in 1821. A treaty between the U.S. and the Choctaw gave the latter the land in the western part of Miller County, so Bailey and Jane Inglish and their six children relocated to the east, still in Arkansas. Unfortunately, Jane died in 1835. Apparently restless for change, late

in 1836 Inglish and five of his six children decided to move to Texas with eight other families. (The Texans had won their independence from Mexico earlier that spring.) Inglish and the other settlers arrived in land that later became Fannin County in March, 1837. Inglish obtained a 1,250 acre grant of land on Bois d'Arc Creek. He also married a widow who was the sisterin-law of John P. Simpson. Simpson settled nearby, and in 1838 he served in a ranger company to patrol the area. Because of the fear of Indian raids, Inglish and several neighbors, probably including Simpson, built a blockhouse/type fort in the fall of 1837 on land that belonged to Inglish. The blockhouse was 16 feet square with a second story that was 24 feet square, with an overhang extending out over the first floor. Most likely a wooden stockade fence enclosed the fort. It was private, not military, but when any rangers or other military patrolled nearby, they used it. Families took refuge in Fort Inglish on numerous occasions, but only one actual Indian raid occurred. Settlers in the fort drove the Indians off, but

not before the latter captured two boys who were outside the blockhouse tending some cows. Fortunately, the boys either escaped or were released, because they soon returned home. PAGES FROM As often hapWESTERN pened, a small develHISTORY village oped around the J’Nell L. Pate fort. In 1840 when the community officially acquired a post office, Inglish became the postmaster. The settlers called the actual community near the fort Bois d'Arc Creek. In 1843 it became the county seat of Fannin County. Of course, the Congress of the Republic of Texas named towns and counties after heroes of the Texas Revolution. Thus the county honored Col. James Fannin, whom the Mexicans executed at Goliad. of the little community from Bois d'Arc to Bloomington, but later to Bonham in honor of James Butler Bonham, a Texas hero who died at the Alamo. Both Inglish and Simpson donated land to the town for city lots. Inglish became chief justice of the county in 1840, and in 1847 oversaw the construction of the first permanent courthouse. He donated land for the first cemetery and built one of the first school buildings with his own money. Simpson built the first county jail at his own expense and a grist mill and cotton gin. Fort Inglish was in use until about 1843 when no Indian problems existed anymore. It fell into disrepair and disappeared. City fathers wanted to rebuild a replica in 1936 during the centennial of Texas independence, but didn't. However, in 1976 as a project of the U.S. Bicentennial, they completed a replica – the one I saw as I drove into Bonham recently. A footnote to the story of Fort Inglish exists. In late 1934 when folks first wanted to build the replica, the local newspaper requested information

about it. Replying to the appeal with a letter dated November 19, 1934 was George Inglish, a grandson of Bailey Inglish. He said that the Inglish family paid $100 for a sculpture to put on a stone for Bailey Inglish's grave depicting a scene of a mule team, prairie schooner, and a fort in the background. Also, the fort was located about 200 yards from “the old Inglish home place.” His grandfather “kept open house, never charging a cent for room and board.” He said that many travelers never told their names. “It was neither healthful nor wise to ask them either,” hinting of outlaws, the James and Younger gangs, passing through. The older Inglish lived until 1867, so perhaps he met them. Such was Texas and Bonham in the early days. Of course, it now is known as the former home of long-time Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Sam Rayburn. We drove by his house. to this snake oil salesman Mr. Trump – his favorite book of all time is the Holy Bible. But when a reporter asked him which scripture he likes most in his favorite book, Mr. Trump couldn't quote any passages out of the Old or New Testament. Come on give me a king size break now; even a non-believer can quote John 3:16 – it's behind every goal post at a football game. ACS wins big Crusaders now 1-1 Azle Christian School – a perennial six-man juggernaut – evened its 2015 record at 1-1 after trouncing Irving Faustina 62-26. Quarterback Caleb Morgan hit 21 of 33 passes for 333 yards and 6 TDs. Defensively, he also intercepted a pair of passes. End Mason Dickens caught a whopping 14 balls for 227 yards and 5 of those TDs. He, too, picked off 2 enemy passes to go with 15 tackles. Halfback John Mark Burress ran 23 times for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns. He added 8 tackles on defense. Defensive end Roman Maoerski had 14 tackles – including 9 solo – to pace the Crusader defense. The ACS JV moved to 2-0 with a 58-40 thumping of Nazarene Christian Academy. Next up for the varsity – coached by veteran Gary Rushing – is against “highly ranked” Inspired Vision. The squads clash Friday, Sept. 11. The junior varsity will head to Covington to face that public school six-man team Thursday, Sept. 10. The Crusaders play on the school campus at The Church in Azle.

Ladies sweep away Crowley

By mArk k. CAmpBELL With 5-5A looming, the Lady Hornet volleyball team picked up another non-district victory. Azle rolled over Crowley 2520, 25-22, 25-19. Kaitlyn Ford paced AHS in kills with 8. Hannah Walker got 6, Logan Graham killed 5, and Sarah Campoli got 4; the Lady Hornets finished with 24 kills in the win. Graham was a force at the net, blocking 4.5 of Azle’s 7.5 stops. Madi Parkison and Walker also had clean blocks. Campoli’s 12 sets was tops; Megan Bagwell added 3 and Parkison had one. Defensively, Ford and CamHannah Walker soars to bash a ball past an opponent. She collected six kills in Azle’s sweep of visiting Crowley. Photo by Mark K. Campbell poli led in digs with 12, and 11

respectively. Juliann Boiles added 8 and Parkison 6 kills. The Lady Hornets traveled to Grandview Sept. 8 – results not available at press time. That match marked the end of the non-district slate. District action starts at the AHS gym on Sept. 11 against Wichita Falls Rider. Azle plays three of its first five contests at home. After heading to Wichita Falls Sept. 15 then Brewer Sept. 18, Chisholm Trail and Boswell come here Sept. 22 and 25. That’s followed by the toughest travel stretch of the season – three straight road games: at Denton (Sept. 29), Saginaw (Oct. 2), and Rider (Oct. 6) to start round two of 5-5A.

Waxahachie wallops Azle, 66-21 By mArk k. CAmpBELL On the day Azle (1-1) traveled to face Waxahachie – coached by former NFL QB Jon Kitna – in the annual Dale Hansen Classic, the Dallas Cowboys cut their roster down. Maybe some of those guys ended up at Lumpkins Stadium that evening, Sept. 5. The Indians roared out to a 21-0 lead quickly and went on to drill the Hornets 66-21. Azle Coach Devon Dorris said flatly, “We got punched in the face.” It was a startling comedown for a Hornet squad that is used to dishing out such trouncings. The score was 31-0 before

AHS reached the end zone when QB Nick Davis raced in from the 12. But it was Waxahachie’s night in the home debut of Kitna and his QB son. Dorris said, “We compounded the situation with mistakes. We’re working on fixing us, and we’re going about getting better at what we do.” Azle struggled to move the ball, rushing for just 111 yards and throwing for 69. Two of those Davis aerials went to Aric Brazell for second half touchdowns. He led AHS with 56 yards and has three touchdowns in the first two games of the season.

The Waxahachie contest was the polar opposite of the season opener at Granbury where Azle dominated the Pirates. The Indian loss is the kind you put behind you and you learn from your mistakes, Dorris said. Looming large now is the home opener against Cleburne. Fans – including hundreds that traveled to Waxahachie – will see a spiffy Hornet Field (or Hornet Stadium, depending on which entrance you use; the new one on the west says Hornet Stadium) when they arrive. And expect to see some fired up Hornets, Dorris said. “The kids are excited to be

playing their first home game. They’ll have their first pep rally. They’ll be fired up and ready to play,” he said. While the Hornets will have one less day to prepare – the Indian game was on a Saturday night – and some players are “banged up,” the intensity will be high. “We have over 25 kids who have dreamed of playing under these Friday night lights,” the coach said. “It’ll be their first time. We know its going to be a good crowd and will be special.” After the Cleburne clash, non-district ends and an open week follows.

Azle races in Elk Run If Saginaw Chisholm Trail is supposed to be the Azle boys toughest cross country rival, the Rangers have a way to go. The Hornets once more beat Chisholm Trail – and every other 5-5A team in Burleson – at the Sept. 4 Elk Run. Chris McGill again led Azle, this time running the 5,000 meters in 17 minutes, 26 seconds. AHS ended up second overall with 97 points. The varsity girls finished ninth, behind district powerhouse Boswell – the meet’s winner – and Saginaw and just ahead of Brewer. Hadassah Marquart was the fastest Lady Hornet again, in 21:47. The junior varsities both finished second. The boys were led by Eloy Martinez (19:13) who took fourth overall. The AHS JV girls were paced by Megan Green and Avery Luig who finished second and third, respectively.

Daniels tops in contest There was one outright winner in the second football contest of the year. After that, it was a dogfight for the other two cash places. The clear winner was Geraldine Daniels whose only miss was taking Texas over Notre Dame. She won $20. Four contestants missed two games each. The tie-breaker of Notre Dame 38, Texas 3 (41) decided the next places. Taking second with a guess of 51 was Springtown’s Eddy Swanzy. He earned $10. Third place went to Bobby Boyd, He claimed $5 for guess of 56 points. Too far off on their tie-breakers were Royce Daniels (59) and Sterling Burton (63). Games that tripped up many submissions were Azle losing and Amarillo falling to Wichita Falls Rider.

Next up Cleburne

The Yellow Jackets have lost its first two games, to Mansfield Lake Ridge 52-26 and to Azle’s 5-5A rival Boswell 42-28. AHS coach Devon Dorris said this is the fourth time the Hornets and Jackets have met and the road team has won every time. “We want that to change,” he said. The Cleburne offense is powered by a running quarterback and a solid back, Dorris said. Defensively, he expects the Yellow Jackets to “pack the box” to stop Azle’s running game, particularly Chase Smith. “They have always been a good opponent,” the AHS coach said. “We want to protect our turf.”

Frosh fall to Indians The Azle freshman squads lost to their Waxahachie counterparts Sept. 3. The Green (1-1) only gave up TDs on the opening drives of the first and second halves. But that was enough for the Indians to win 16-8. Azle’s score came from Bradley Crawford who ran in from the 15 in the final period. Other offensive standouts were back Kilton VanGelder and linemen Cooper Moorman and Roni Lopez. Cody Akers threw a pass to Payton Vaughn who also earned kudos for his blocking. The defense was anchored by Jacob Garcia who picked off a pass and was “great” tackling. Lathan Harris picked off an Indian aerial on an attempted screen.

Havin Hill broke up several passes. The White (1-1) made some big plays on defense, coaches recalled, but Waxahachie was too big and fast in the long run as the Indians won 18-0 on 3 TDs. Xander Salsman and Cody Weisensale both intercepted passes to stop Indian drives. Asher Hopewell and Matt Collin joined Salsman as linebackers earning praise from coaches. Offensively, the Hornets were led by QB Noah Vurich. Hanging tough in the line were Dylan Penwell, Tate Patton, and Patrick Conrique. Don Rankin and Xander Salsman carried the ball most often for Azle. Azle’s Bryce Gum (3) works off a block by teammate Sean Townsend. Run don’t walk away from A Walk in the Woods The concept: Two well respected actors reaching one more time for previous heights from decades earlier. Those types of movies pop up occasionally and another one has, A Walk in the Woods. And, as too often happens, the movie isn’t that great. About the film For a while there, no actor was hotter than Robert Redford. After acting in a slew of TV shows in the 1960’s – his lone appearance on the original Twilight Zone “Nothing in the Dark” is one of the great ones – he gained some fame opposite Jane Fonda in Barefoot in the Park in 1967. Then came a long stretch of still beloved movies: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969); Jeremiah Johnson (1972, originally an R but tamed down to a PG; it’s fantastic); The Sting (1973, his only acting Oscar nomination; he won as director of Ordinary People [1980]); All the President’s Men (1976); The Natural (1984, the best sports movie of all time); Out of Africa (1985); and his last great movie, The Horse Whisperer (1998, Movie Man No. 234, 8, Best of Year). Since then, however, Redford can’t buy a hit – not even something moderately successful. Pictures like The Clearing (2004), An Unfi nished Life (2005), and Lions for Lambs (2007) went almost completely unseen; if you can name the plot of any, you must be a fan. He won critical kudos for his almost dialogue-free role in All Is Lost (2013) and was good in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014, MM #1082, 7). But that uptick is gone with A Walk in the Woods. Nick Nolte also was once a pretty boy who made some fun movies. Popular in the same stretch as Redford, Nolte’s launching pad into the public consciousness was TV’s immensely popular mini-series, Rich Man, Poor Man in 1976. That was followed on the

big screen the next year by The Deep – a movie mostly remembered for Jacqueline Bisset’s “swimsuit” that rivaled Farrah Fawcett’s in her classic poster. Several other Nolte movies hit, including North Dallas Forty (1979), 48HRS (1982, the movie that made Eddie Murphy a superstar), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986) and The Thin Red Line (1998, MM #269, 8). But then, like Redford, the well dried up. He has worked almost incessantly, but only occasionally did he pop up in something interesting, like Hulk (2003, MM #513, 7) or Tropic Thunder (2008, MM #786, 6). Mostly, his movies were barely watched, too. So the reteaming of superior actors from the past for a late-in-life hurrah sounded like a great idea – especially since this was a project that Redford had been longing to make for decades. But A Walk in the Woods is a dud. About the film (spoilers) A successful man with a wonderful family Bill Bryson (Redford), a former world traveler, is restless. He decides to walk the Appalachian Trail but loving wife Catherine (Emma Thompson) insists that he take friend. But all Redford’s pals decline

– except for one, old traveling buddy Katz (Nolte), two former pals who haven’t seen each other for decades. Nolte shows up in pathetic shape, but the duo head out. It’s slow going early on. But they press forward. Numerous adventures follow: They run into a chatty female hiker that drives them crazy; it snows; two bears threaten them at night; and they fall off the trail and land precariously on a high ledge. Still, they wander and chat, trading friendly barbs and discussing life. Eventually, the massive length of the journey – over 1,200 miles – wears them down. They quit after a couple of months.

What works A few times, director Ken Kwapis (best known as a TV director) frames his craggy stars perfectly as they spout some well-earned homilies about life. Kwapis also shows some sweeping vistas of pieces of the trail that are lovely. Redford, as the bookish Bryson, lets folks know some interesting bits about ecology – which is probably what attracted Redford, a renowned

KNOWS ALL, SEES ALL

WINTER 2015-16

Here’s 25 of the Farmer’s Almanac sometimes wacky facts by mark k. campbell Every year, we here at the paper get a copy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The publication calls itself “useful, with a pleasant degree of humor” – something we should all strive for. While some might scoff at any efforts to predict the weather a year in advance or taking a chance on making bold suggestions when the best time to fish is, the publication has no qualms giving it a shot. And don’t be so quick to chuckle at the hillbilly-esque Almanac’s accuracy: Using a combination of the study of sunspots and modern technology as a basis, they hit last year’s weird wet winter all over America at 96.3 percent – the entire nation. The only region the prognostication missed concerning precipitation was us; Region 11 consists of most of Texas and

Oklahoma, and we had way more snow than they guessed. Still, even without that impressive 96.3 percent, the usual accuracy is 80 percent. So, the Almanac is pretty groovy – and there’s way more in it than weather. Here are 25 facts to wow your friends with, culled from the annual tome. 1. Don’t worry so much about bees disappearing when

it comes to pollination. Experts are working on “robot” bees to handle that chore in the future. 2. Somebody somewhere – the Almanac isn’t always super specific – is working on building houses that float in floods. 3. In Asia, bullets were once made of garnets, thinking shot enemies would bleed more. 4. The spring of 2016 is expected to be warmer than usual. 5. The next full solar eclipse

viewing in North America isn’t until Aug. 21, 2017. 6. A gargantuan “supermoon” arrives Nov. 14, 2016 – the moon will just be 217,000 miles away, its closest point to Earth since Jan. 26, 1948. If you miss the 2016 lunar event, the next supermoon isn’t until Nov. 25, 2034. 7. Easter is March 27 next year. 8. On Nov. 27, 1963, Wilt

Chamberlain scored 18 baskets in a row. 9. France officially recognized America’s independence Dec. 17, 1777. 10. Daylight Savings Time is March 13, 2016. 11. The best days for fishing next May are 6-21 – between new and full moons. 12. It doesn’t matter what the temperature of water is when washing your hands. It’s

the length of time thoroughly scrubbing with soap that is vital. Sing “Happy Birthday” twice – about 20 seconds. 13. It’s safe to store butter at room temperature; leave out an amount you will use in one or two days. 14. Your refrigerator should be a constant 40 degrees. 15. In linear measurements, PLEASE SEE Farmer’S, PAGE 2B.

What you don’t know could save you. Stroke: Warning Signs & What to Do Stroke warning signs happen suddenly. They include numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg (especially on one side of the body); confusion, loss of speech, or trouble speaking or understanding; loss of vision or trouble seeing in one or both eyes; severe headache with no known cause; and dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance or coordination.

Act F.A.S.T. FACE

Ask person to smile – does one side of face droop?

ARMS

Ask person to raise both arms – does one arm drift downward? Is there leg weakness?

SPEECH

Ask person to repeat a simple sentence – are words slurred? Are words correct?

TIME

Farmer’s Almanac knows all ■ FARMER’S, FROM PAGE 1B

one hand equals four inches. 16. Only recently in history have shoes been tossed; for centuries they were so expensive that they were cherished. 17. Human brain size makes it unlikely for anyone to have

more than 150 good friends at a time. 18. A cord of dense, dried hardwood weighs around two tons (4,000 pounds). 19. The oldest breed of American horse is the Morgan; all descended from a single horse owned by a Vermont

singing teacher in 1791. 20. The average lifespan of a domestic duck is 10 years. 21. In Europe, a moose is called an elk. 22. The best day to start a new project in January 2016 is the 11th. 23. Teachers in 1911 could

not travel beyond the city limits without permission of the chairman of the school board. 24. “Sell by” dates are misinterpreted and 90 percent of Americans throw out good food. 25. Nine percent of dog owners include their canines in their

wills. And these 25 nuggets are just the tip of the Almanac iceberg. There’s much more in the book and online at www.almanac.com. In fact, if you have exceptional eyesight, you can really amaze your friends – and prob-

ably win Jeopardy! – if you can read the ridiculously teeny print in the “Calendar” section. Those pages are jam-packed with minutia of the fi nest order. Finally, FYI, the Almanac says this Christmas looks to be warm and wet around here. I wouldn’t bet against it.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac had remarkable success in predicting America’s 2014-15 wet winter – except in Texas. Spring 2016? Warm. Photos by Mark K. Campbell

Mesothelioma may occur 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Many workers were exposed from the 1940s through the 1970s. Industrial and construction workers, along with their families (second hand exposure) are among those at risk for mesothelioma, lung cancer or gastro cancer (throat, stomach, colon).
