Sting Fling: 7 years old and getting better It’s been seven years now that the annual Sting Fling festival has brought thousands of visitors to Azle. And, as in years past, the event keeps getting bigger and better. Things start early with a 5K run/walk that includes a twist this year as racers get doused with color powder throughout the route. That’s quickly followed by a parade that can include bikes, dogs, and horses as well as local groups. From there, the festival takes off with a classic car show, a

unique children’s area that includes new activities like a zipline, a slew of vendors offering food, drink, and crafts, and, of course, the ever-popular Wiener Dog Derby. I’ve Got Talent will highlight locals’ singing and dancing skills. Then there’s all the wonderful, friendly people you’ll meet on the tree-covered grounds. This special section of the News can help you negotiate all the marvels this year’s Sting Fling offers. Enjoy!

Geren talks about Azle … and Highway 199, Perry’s indictment, drought and water by carla noah stutsman Say what you will about politicians in general. Charlie Geren just doesn’t seem to fit that mold. The State Representative for Texas House District (HD) 99 – which includes Azle and the surrounding areas – chatted easily about topics that pertain to his constituents. But not before taking a minute to describe how he feels about Azle and her people. “I’m excited to be a sponsor of Azle’s Sting Fling again this year because it’s a really neat event,” Geren said. “We furnished water for Music in the Park again this year, and it was amazing – we gave away twice as much water as we have in previous years, and it was a cooler summer,” he added with a nod toward the community support for such events. “Azle is just a great community,” Geren continued. “In fact, during redistricting, I lost some of the area I had represented, but I was adamant about keeping Azle.” Asked what the current political climate in the state is like, Geren immediately turned to the recent indictment of Governor Rick Perry, who faces charges he improperly threatened to veto $7.5 million in funding for the Travis County Public Integrity Unit if Travis county District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg didn’t resign following an arrest

cally motivated (against Perry).” for drunken driving. That said, Geren stands firm “I wish I were smart enough to know just what’s going on in his belief that Perry had every there,” Geren said. “I’ve spoken right to the veto. “He’s the only governor I’ve with attorneys who know (San served under, and he has probably vetoed as many of my bills as he has anyone else’s,” Geren said. “Some of those bills I brought back to the next legislative session, and now they are law. But he had every right to veto them.” The continuing drought is a concern for every resident in the state, Geren said. “The Good Lord is going to have to fix the drought,” he said. “In the meantime, conservation is very, very important – in this area, conservation is reducing water use by about 28 percent, Charlie Geren and that’s one of the highest conservation rates in the state.” The passage of Proposition 6 Antonio lawyer Michael McCrum, special prosecutor in the by voters in the November 2013 case) and they say he is smart, election will help, and soon, Gea real good prosecutor, and they ren said. The Texas Water Development Board is currently at work authorizing the first projects to be funded as a result of that constitutional amendment, he said. The fund should finance $28 billion in water projects over its life, Geren added. Locally, funding to finish construction on State Highway 199 (Jacksboro Highway) is an ongoing hot topic. Geren said a constitutional amendment slated to be on the ballot in the Nov. 4 general elec-

tion, if passed by voters, could help speed up completion of the SH 199 project. The proposed amendment would direct the state comptroller to allocate to the State Highway Fund one-half of the amount of general revenue derived from oil and gas production taxes that currently is transferred to the state’s rainy day fund. Revenue transferred in this way could be used only for constructing, maintaining, and acquiring rights of way for public roadways other than toll roads. “Highway 199 is a priority. OneSource: Servicing Azle’s every communication need OneSource Communications has been providing wireless Internet service in the Azle/Springtown area since June 2009, and is now extending their fiber optic

network to Azle. “It seemed like a natural progression,” says OneSource General Manager Andy Slote. “We are extending our fiber to

reach our wireless towers in Azle, so why not provide some other services along the way?” With a route already in place along Wells Burnett Road and

Highway 199, and plans to construct additional facilities in the city of Azle, OneSource is prepared to offer Fiber Internet, telephone, and cable television services. The use of fiber optic cable directly to the customer will allow Internet speeds up to 100 Mbps, as well as improved quality and reliability for telephone and cable television services. The company is also continuing to expand and improve their wireless Internet service – with additional towers, fiber optic extensions, additional equipment and new technology – to keep up with demand and customer expectations. Many customers in rural areas have few choices for Internet, and OneSource wants to make sure as many as possible have access to true high speed Internet. OneSource takes pride in customer service – that’s a big reason why they’ve been a leading provider of telecommunica-

tions and entertainment services in Tarrant County since 1998. Working hard to become a part of the communities OneSource serves, Account Manager Jamie Hodes is active with both the Azle and Springtown chambers, and OneSource sets up a booth at both the Sting Fling and Wild West festivals. “It’s not just exposure to new customers - we want to be in the community and we want to hear from our existing customers,” Jamie says. “Our presence in the community is what sets us apart.” OneSource’s customer service hours are Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Installations are scheduled Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. OneSource customer service can be reached at 817745-3000, and technical support is available 24-7. So if you’re looking for high speed Internet – and now telephone or cable television service – call OneSource.

Helping to build the Azle of the future Kids, youth a focus at Pinnacle Bank by carla noah stutsman When choosing a bank, people typically look at things like interest rates, location, customer service, and security of funds. Pinnacle Bank Azle can meet or beat just about any bank when it comes to the business of banking. But it’s not just about business. If you run in Central Park, work out at the gym, go to the grocery store, attend school or church functions or any number of community activities around Azle, you’ve likely run into a Pinnacle Bank employee or bank officer there. That’s because almost all of them live in the Azle area and care about everything that goes on here – and that’s especially true when it comes to Azle’s children. Regina Stokes, vice president HR/training at the bank, spoke about Pinnacle’s national public relations campaign, Why Community Matters. “Every time I see that slogan, I think about our children,” Stokes said. “The children of Azle are the future of our community – they are the ones who will continue the legacy when we’re gone.” Stokes and her co-workers put their money where their mouths are, so to speak, by volunteering on their own time for various organizations around Azle. In just about every instance, there’s a benefit to children. There’s Randa Goode, lending officer, who is spearheading the I’ve Got Talent competition dur-

ing Sting Fling this year. Goode is also active with the Azle High School Drama Boosters. Linda Murphy, senior VP, says she’s one of only a few Pinnacle employees who was not born and raised in the Azle area...“but I got here as fast as I could,” she laughs. Murphy, who will retire at the end of 2014 after 44 years in the banking industry – the last

17 years with Pinnacle Bank – pointed to the bank’s Wool Fund. “It’s a program that’s open to every school in the district, year round,” Murphy said. “Employee donations to the Wool Fund provide everything from cloth-

30

ing, to coats, shoes and even personal hygiene items to children in need identified by school personnel.” Natasha Hensley, cash management officer, as a member of the local Lions Club, participates in the back pack program as well as the Lions’ Angel Tree each year. Nate Simmons, VP lending officer, recently moved to Azle with his wife and young son. Simmons, too, is not just busy with his customers – he plays an important role as a member of the Azle Ministerial Alliance in putting on Follow The Flag, a huge annual event in Central Park each Fourth of July. “It’s a community-wide event funded entirely by donations of money and time,” Simmons said of the Christian patriotic event. “I think the overall community

sense of Follow The Flag is very positive, and it’s free for everyone.” Simmons credits Kristie Tatsch, lending officer, as another major volunteer contributor to the event. Tatsch is in training with another organization known for helping children – Catholic Charities. Simmons also serves on Azle High School’s Career and Technology Education Advisory Committee. The committee, made up of local business men and women, reaches out to the next generation by mentoring students and giving them a real-

life glimpse into various careers and trades. Goode described the attitude of her fellow Pinnacle Bank employees: “We all want to make a positive impact on this community – it’s where we live, too.” Stokes agreed, adding that she often finds opportunities in her daily life to talk to young people – sometimes about banking; sometimes about a career choice; sometimes about nothing important at all. “The point is to engage them and to let them know people in the community care about them PLEASE SEE BANK’S, PAGE 13

and want them to grow and flourish,” Stokes said. Simmons said that, toward the end of each year, an email arrives from the Dinsdale family, founders and owners of Pinnacle Bank, asking each branch to as-

sess its contributions to the community. “Have we done enough?” the Dinsdales want to know. “Here at Pinnacle Bank Azle, we give financially – but we recognize that often, showing up and giving of our time and effort outweighs the dollars,” Simmons said.

Walmart: Proud to be part of Azle by carla noah stutsman Walmart in Azle may be the largest employer in the city, but providing jobs – and groceries, and just about anything you can think of – is not the only way the local merchandiser contributes to the community. “We are proud to be a part of this community and grateful to all our customers who help us support so many things,” said

Chad Jones, store manager. “This community helped us raise $41,000 in May, and it all went to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.” Cook Children’s is just one of many benefactors of the Azle Walmart. “We just like to be involved in the community,” Jones said. “We always try to contribute to and assist the Chamber of Commerce, the police and fire department, and, of course, the schools through community grants and donations.” Likewise, Jones said, Walmart recognizes the need for some non-profit groups to have a public place to raise funds and increase awareness. That’s why you’ll often see groups like the Girl Scouts, area fire and police departments, Carter BloodCare, and Teen Challenge in the parkChad Jones is store manager of ing lot in front of the store. the Azle Walmart. From selling cookies to donating blood, collecting school supplies to dunking a favorite cop into a big vat of water, those kinds of activities help the organizations and also promote good will in the community, Jones said. Jones says most of the store’s 400-plus associates live around Azle, but also in and around Boyd and Springtown – communities that also shop the Azle Walmart and that the store supports upon request, as well. Jones, as store manager, is ultimately responsible for those 400 associates, as well as everything on the store shelves and the entire building. He’s assisted by four shift managers and seven assistant managers, generally assigned by department. It takes all that to keep the store running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 364-1/2 days a year.

“We usually close sometime in the evening on Christmas Eve and reopen about 5 a.m. on Christmas Day,” Jones said. “Other than that, we’re always open.” It’s a lifestyle Jones has gotten used to after 19 years with the company. “I started working at Walmart as a cart-pusher when I was 16 years old and in high school,

RURAL GAS SUPPLY

and just worked my way up” he said. “This is the only job I’ve ever had.” In fact, he added, the vast majority of Walmart managers began as hourly associates and worked their way up into management positions. “We’re always on the lookout for friendly associates,” Jones said.

Goin’ green: By Natalie Gentry A beautiful lawn enhances a property’s curb appeal, increases a home’s value, and improves quality of life. The lawn care professionals at Classic Green will keep your yard looking marvelous year round. Maintaining a landscaped yard in North Texas can be difficult work. It’s hot, dirty, and exhausting. Not to mention, it takes a lot of effort and time away from your schedule and/or family. The team Classic Green is licensed to provide professional weed control and fertilization to keep lawns healthy, and Bobby, their lawn specialist, can give expert advice and help. Vincent is their licensed irrigator and can ensure that sprinkler systems are kept up to efficient and effective levels, or install a new system up to new codes and compliance. DJ keeps the lawn maintenance crews running and doing what they are supposed to do. Kyle can design and create a beautiful new landscape and flowerbeds, while Brenda helps with customer service and makes sure communication is top notch. Simply put, most people don’t have the time or desire to maintain the lawn themselves – this is where the team at Classic Green comes in. The guarantee Garrett Bremer, owner of Classic Green, understands that finding the right lawn service company can be a bit daunting. “People are tired of lawn service companies that deliver poor quality, never call back, have lousy communication skills, and are generally unprofessional and unreliable,” Bremer said. In light of this, Bremer said he personally guarantees all Classic Green’s lawn care work. “We want everyone to be totally satisfied with their Classic Green experience,” he said. “We will do it to our customers’ satisfaction or it’s free.” In fact, Bremer said that if they

Classic Green offers precision lawn care and landscape management

don’t fix a problem to a customer’s satisfaction, Classic Green will pay another company to get the issue fixed. “That is how committed we are to getting it done right,” Bremer said. The right choice for you It is important to hire a lawn maintenance professional that understands all aspects of lawn servicing. Bremer said he is often asked why people should hire Classic Green over other lawn care companies. “You should hire us because we solve your problems and respond to your concerns,” Bremer said. “We aren’t just a couple of guys running around with a truck, trailer, lawn mower, and a cell phone. If something is not right, we fix it and we stand behind our work.” Give the Classic Green team a call to help with your landscape These professionals at Classic Green can make your landscape the envy of the neighborhood – any neighborhood. service needs.

Eric Leonard and the staff at Cash America thank the people of Azle for their continued patronage and friendship and wish everyone a wonderful Sting Fling. They look forward to helping out any way they can. Photo by Natalie Gentry

Cash America Pawn happy to help Being part of the largest chain of pawn shops in America doesn’t stop Azle’s Cash America Pawn from helping its neighbors. Eric Leonard and his crew are dedicated to establishing ties with the community and being there for any customer need. With more than 700 locations nationwide, Cash America boasts a long history of professionalism and expertise when handling loans or purchases. Azle’s establishment was erected in 1991 on Main Street, and for two decades the citizens of Azle relied on its familiarity and service. In October 2011, Cash America moved to a new location on Boyd Road beside Walgreens. “The ease of access, expanded parking, and premiere location made us sure the move was a good choice,” said Leonard. “It helps us reach more of the city with more ease. It’s a win-win.” Leonard and his assistant, Al Howard, oversee the daily operations with a learned eye, having spent nearly 50 years collectively in the pawn industry. “Our top priority is helping ordinary people with their financial situation,” said Leonard. “And we’re happy to say the citizens of Azle are some of the best customers we could ask for.” The loans offered through Cash America run for one month plus thirty days, giving customers some help between paychecks. Jewelry is especially valuable and Cash America offers

a top of the line refurbishing center that all of its products go through. The company also boasts cutting-edge security – both internally and around the premises – in order to protect the investments and property of its customers. Since 2012, Cash America has been a proud sponsor of Sting Fling and looks forward to doing so for as long as it is are able. “Looking into the future, Cash America and myself personally will be making a concerted effort to become more involved in this wonderful community,” said Leonard. Once November arrives and the holiday season gets into full swing, business will be booming, and Cash America urges

you to come by and see all it has to offer. Although the retail side of the business is more a service than a main directive, the store still strives to offer the newest product at the highest quality possible. J e w e l r y, tools, electronics and firearms comprise a large part of the store’s inventory, but Leonard says he and his employees also deal in any manner of product the community is interested in. “If a person has a short-term cash need and brings in an item we believe has value, we hold the item for the specified time period. In many cases, the customer returns to retrieve their item” said Leonard. “That’s why a personal connection with everyone who comes through our doors is paramount.”

Azle Brookshire’s remain concerned about community There’s no other store in Azle like Brookshire’s. Run by Mark Laudenheimer, the grocery store is well versed in the company’s core beliefs and environment. That’s why the store took part in the Brookshire’s Gatorade promotion that ended in August and supplied local First Responders with 3,000 bottles of the replacement fluid. Laudenheimer is Azle focused. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Rotary Club, too. How plugged in is he? He’s a Rotary member and regularly helps out with good or funds locally. For his efforts, Laudenheimer was the 2014 Chamber Member of the Year at the group’s January banquet. The store itself is Azle-centric. “The store fits into Azle because of the people in the community – serving the community, seeing everybody every day, hearing everybody’s stories. “You get to learn a lot about a person,” Laudenheimer said. From Monroe, Louisiana, Laudenheimer is a familiar face around town. When he uses his Cajun skills during crawdad season, the rush

is on to Brookshire’s at 511 North Stewart Street to buy up those tasty mud bugs. From his Louisiana upbringing, Laudenheimer knows how to select the best crayfish and when to buy them. Then he cooks them up in a massive pot. The crawdads sell out quickly each season. Brookshire’s is always about community, and Laudenheimer takes that to another level. “It’s both,” he noted, a business model and his personal touch. Laudenheimer said, “My family owned a family business. Customers are what keep you around. “If you don’t know your customers or you aren’t involved with your customers, they are not going to come back.” He stresses his employees are big on Azle – they live here and love it. Laudenheimer moved to Azle with his pregnant wife, after 80 years of family history in Louisiana. Hesitant at first, they arrived in 2010 and were overjoyed with the community. He plans on staying in Azle. “I’ve been here five years and I can’t see going anywhere else. These are great people in a great town.”

Snake season heats up in North Texas summers Father’s Day this year has become a memorable one for Brandon Sparks, but not necessarily for all the good things that happened that day. After enjoying a dinner with his family, the 27 year-old and his girlfriend decided to go for an evening walk, something they do routinely. During a walk on a path he’d taken several times before, Sparks, who was wearing

bites may cause less severe symptoms than those who receive full injection of the poison, their encounters can be just as life-threatening. Snake bite symptoms can include pain, swelling, nausea, vomiting, elevated heart rate and blood pressure and even temporary paralysis. “It’s usually fairly obvious if an envenomation has occurred,” said

poke underneath with a branch to scare any snakes away. People often don’t look under pieces of wood, under bushes or under the deck and they get bitten because they don’t look first.” Some main prevention tips: Avoid handling snakes unless properly trained Maintain a well-manicured landscape Wear long pants and boots in areas that are known to have snakes Be mindful of where you step or place your hands when outdoors “We typically see our snake bite patients in the evening which is a good indication that this is when snakes are most likely to be out hunting,” Penrod said. “Simply put, look before you touch.”

Sparks, now fully recovered from his snake bite, stands with his caregivers, Dr. Richard Niles (left), an emergency medicine physician on the medical staff, and Amie Penrod, RN, (right) trauma nurse, coordinator at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle.

flip flops, felt a sudden sting. He immediately began feeling pain, swelling and a burning sensation in his left great toe. “It was getting dark and I’d forgotten my flashlight, but even without being able to see, I knew something was wrong,” said Sparks. The pain was followed by an upset stomach along with heavy breathing. Sparks’ girlfriend rushed him back from the trail where they discovered he’d been bitten by a snake. He was immediately taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle for treatment. After an assessment, doctors determined the bite was from a copperhead snake, but was considered dry, which means the snake does not inject poison into its victim. “The most important thing to remember for snake bites is that it requires immediate attention,” said Amie Penrod, RN, trauma coordinator at Texas Health Azle. “Many patients we see have symptoms similar to what Sparks experienced and they are very treatable as long as immediate action is taken.” According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, roughly half of all venomous snake bites are dry. While dry

Dr. David Smith, medical director of the trauma program at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. “First of all, the bite needs to have come from a venomous snake. Rattlesnakes, water moccasins and copperheads are the three most common ones in our area. Venom causes a very quick reaction to the bite victim including a lot of swelling and discoloration to the bite area.” Typically snake bite season is from June to October, but with the weather heating up, snake bite season has gotten an early start. Last year, Texas Health Azle had 11 snake bite cases. The hospital has seen five already this year. Texas Health Fort Worth has seen 15 cases. Healthcare professionals urge residents to be on the lookout as snakes retreat due to high heat as well. Being aware of simple prevention tips could help avoid being bitten. “In this part of Texas, do not wear flip flops in your yard when you can’t see,” Dr. Smith said. “Put on your cowboy boots at night. If you’re going to be working outside and reaching in your bushes, wear leather gloves and
