AISD live! Trio broadcasting school events by mark k. campbell Sometimes they’re all crammed close together like they were in the Chisholm Trail High School press box. But that didn’t keep AHS senior Jason Shotwell, teacher Billy Mitchell, and head boys basketball coach Eddy Prather from broadcasting the football Hornets bi-district blowout of Dunbar Nov. 21. It wasn’t the trio’s first outing, and it won’t be their last. “We started broadcasts at the end of last school year,” Mitchell said. “We broadcast the NHS [National Honor Society] inductions and the drumline/ winterguard show.” Mitchell, who teaches computer programming and A/V [audio/visual] production at AHS, said some students and faculty also wanted to see some AISD sporting events live. So the trio began with volleyball. Demand arose for the district championship football game at Wichita Falls Rider, but the broadcasting crew couldn’t get there, Mitchell said. Shotwell, Mitchell, and Prather did make it to the bi-district win over Dunbar, however. “We got our equipment together and downloaded some software and we were ready to go,” Mitchell said. The process is not difficult, he added. “It’s just a spinoff from the A/V classes.” Streaming audio is a cinch since “set up for the Internet radio side is easy – laptop, USB interface, a couple of microphones, and some Internet,”
the teacher said. However, producing video is tougher. “It’s more complex and a little bit harder to manage,” Mitchell said. Video equipment is housed and stored in a “fairly heavy” box, and, at AHS, “we have to carry it to the top of the main gym. “There are multiple cameras and cables running everywhere,” Mitchell said. He added that he hopes the new competitive gym set to open next August “will be more accommodating.” Mitchell said he is the main announcer. Prather noted his contributions are minor, just chiming in occasionally. Near-future plans include sending out live broadcasts of soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. Mitchell said soccer is good to go unless it conflicts with basketball. Softball and baseball are more difficult. “It doesn’t look good right now because of a lack of an Internet signal down at the fields.” Mitchell said future plans include a high school newscast and perhaps events from elementary schools. And, eventually, maybe even something for the city of Azle. “Who knows?” he said. “Teachers have crazy ideas and I want to be able to make them happen.” Right now, however, fans can keep up with plenty of AISD activities on the web site highschoolcube.com. A link on the high school tab at azleisd.net will directed listeners to Sending out AISD athletic events through cyberspace from Chisholm Trail High School Nov. 14 were (l-r) Eddy Prather, Billy Mitchell, and Jason Shotwell. Azle crime spree nets man 15 years Coffee convicted of arson, aggravated robbery
Joe Floyd Coffee, 41, of Azle, admited he set a fire that destroyed this vacant home in the 200 block of Shoreline Drive Feb. 10. Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman
By carla noah stutsman A crime spree in Azle last February that included stealing a vehicle, setting a home on fire, and robbing a convenience store landed now 41-year-old Joe Floyd Coffee in the Tarrant County jail. That’s where he’ll be for the foreseeable future following a plea arrangement with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office in the 371st District Court in Fort Worth on Nov. 13. Coffee will spend the next 15 years in prison. He allegedly entered a convenience store in the 1500 block of Southeast Parkway late on the evening of Feb. 14 and began to play one or more of the
electronic games inside. Azle PD Lt. Bill Russell provided the following details at the time. When Coffee tired of playing games, he picked up a 12-pack of Dr. Pepper and set it on the counter, which was staffed by a male employee. Coffee demanded to be paid his winnings from the game; but in the state of Texas, it’s not legal to pay those winnings monetarily, so the clerk declined. Coffee didn’t like his answer. He produced a long-bladed knife, and in a dramatic fashion, stabbed the Dr. Peppers, causing them to spew liquid all over himself and the clerk. PLEASE SEE COFFEE, PAGE 2A.
Give an animal the gift of a home Rotary contributes to Animal Shelter full, some longtime residents at risk of euthanasia wheelchair program
by Amber plumley Imagine standing in a four-bysix foot space, watching your friends come and go, separated by the bars in front of your face. Crissy, a white 21-27 month old pit bull mix at the Azle Animal Shelter Adoption Center, is all too familiar with this experience. She and four other dogs have spent at least five of the past months behind bars. With winter quickly approaching, the shelter’s Animal Control Supervisor, Jessie Flores, noticed increased awareness about strays. “During this time of year, with
bad weather people become more concerned for strays. During nice weather, people aren’t as concerned,” Flores said. “We have to take in strays.” The shelter is now at full capacity – with 20 cages filled – and the shelter team is working hard to think outside the box for giving hope and homes to these animals. Flores noted that Taylor Long, a volunteer who attends school and works part-time as a teacher, dedicates her free time by taking pictures, posting on Facebook, and attending off-site adoption
Dominican Republic needy get 350 chairs by mark k. campbell A former Rotary district governor told Azle club members just how their contributions to a wheelchair program helped result in heartfelt success. Paul Geisel showed Rotarians how Azle’s $1,050 donation to the Dominican Wheelchair Project was matched by 50 percent by the local region. Geisel said in volunteers’ four-day journey to the Dominican Republic, 350 wheelchairs were distributed – sometimes under harsh circumstances. Another 300 canes were taken to the country as well. Geisel told tales of how excited recipients were. One 29-year-old man, he said, has spent his entire life on the ground, dragging himself everywhere. Geisel showed a photo of the jubilant man sitting his chair, overjoyed.

All 20 dog cages at the Azle Animal Adoption Center are filled and the shelter will continue to take in every stray. Casey, a 19-21 week-old black pit bull mix pictured right has spent 297 days at the Azle Animal Shelter and is at high risk of euthanasia along with other furry friends who Photo by Amber Plumley have been there for far too long.

Another lady given a chair was soon seen rolling down her street, shouting out to her neighbors and friends. Giesel said Rotarians can reach people that some groups cannot. “We have no agenda; there’s no politics or religion,” he said. Also contributing with Azle to the program has provided over 4,000 adult and pediatric wheelchairs to the needy, were Rotary clubs in Burleson, Arlington, Mineral Wells, and Fort Worth to name a few. Geisel said another trip is planned for 2015, but the country has not been determined. He said sometimes the travel is taxing; some trips take more than 24 hours to get the chosen destination. Geisel said that the Azle club would be notified when decisions have been made and local club members are invited to make a “life-changing” journey.

Full capacity at Azle Shelter
Coffee convicted of Feb. crimes n COFFEE, FROM PAGE ONE.
The clerk responded to Coffee’s actions and his continued, loud demands by producing a large wooden club and displaying it in a defensive stance. Coffee reacted to the clerk by storming out of the store, breaking the glass in the door on his way out. The clerk pursued Coffee outside, so Coffee threw the knife at him. The clerk dodged it and was not injured. But two of the store’s customers near the gas pumps saw Coffee hurl the knife at the clerk, and took it upon themselves to tackle Coffee. They detained him until police arrived moments later. Things had just begun to get interesting. Coffee was taken into custody by Azle police and later charged with aggravated robbery. But before Azle officers could get him to the jail, Coffee began confessing to additional crimes. “He confessed to setting the Shoreline Drive house fire” that occurred in the early morning hours of Feb. 11, Azle PD Detective Sgt. Kevin Rogers said. “He said his reason for setting the house on fire was because there was a dog in the house that had no water.”
Coffee also told officers he was about to rob a different convenience store a few days earlier but happened to see a vehicle that was left running. Coffee jumped in the vehicle and drove it to Whitesboro to see his girlfriend, then drove it back to Azle and parked it. Azle police had already located that vehicle – exactly where Coffee said he had parked it. Coffee also described items he admitted to taking from both the Shoreline Drive home and the vehicle. His descriptions matched property reported missing from both, Rogers said. Coffee also told Rogers and Wilson he had his eye on a few other places he’d like to burn down if they let him out of jail. It appears that won’t happen for quite some time. In exchange for dropping the charge of vehicle theft $1,50020,000, Coffee pleaded guilty to the charges of arson damaging a habitation and aggravated robbery. He was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 15 years in the state penitentiary. While awaiting trial in the Tarrant County jail, Coffee was found to be incompetent to stand trial on April 25. He was subsequently found to be competent to stand trial on Aug. 7.

events. The Azle shelter participates in as many adoption events as it can. During National Adoption Weekend Nov. 15-16, shelter volunteers, supervisors, and adoptable pets went to the PetCo in Lake Worth, as well as the one near Ridgmar Mall. Another innovation to encourage adoptions is the halfoff discounts on animals that have been in the shelter longer than 60 days. The newest offer is a $25 adoption fee for dogs – originally priced at $100 – that have been in the shelter for at least five months. As you walk in the shelter you can see three cats to the left who have been in there since August.
“They were born in the shelter,” Flores said. “They have never felt carpet between their toes, haven’t heard a toilet flush, and haven’t had a soft bed to sleep in.” The cats’ names are Charlie, Tristan, and Remmy and are each only $15 to adopt so that they can spend what small amount of their kitten life is left out of a cage. Most adult cat prices have dropped as well, from $60 down to $15. Every adoption fee allows the animals to be fully vetted, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for parasites, and implanted with a microchip. In the spirit of giving, the Christmas wish of both shelter staff and animals is to have as many “residents” adopted as possible so they don’t risk being euthanized.
For those citizens who cannot take in an extra four legs, volunteer hours are available, which can mean doing tasks like dog walking, cage cleaning, and working the front desk. Along with volunteering and adopting, donations can go a long way to help the animals. In addition to monetary donations, needed items include towels, blankets, cans, Pedigree dog food, and Purina Kitten Chow. If you are interested in adopting any animal you can visit with them in the get-to-knowme room at the office located at 724 Park Drive in Azle. You can also check out the website at www.azleanimalshleter.org and follow the shelter on Facebook for up-todate announcements. Call the shelter at 817-4448215 for more information.

Azle High School cheerleaders Davidson, Seeton to take part in London’s New Year’s Parade
Mikala Seeton
Azle High School varsity cheerleaders Haley Davidson and Mikala Seeton will spend their New Year holiday in London, England. Both girls are seniors and have cheered all four years of high school. Seeton is the daughter of April and Mike Seeton of Azle. Davidson is the daughter of Mike and D’Andra Davidson, also of Azle. The two have been selected
to participate with more than 500 high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S. who will perform in the world famous London New Year’s Day Parade. The individuals invited to take part in the parade qualified for the trip after being selected as an All-American at one of the summer camps hosted by Universal Cheerleaders Association, National Cheerleaders Association, United Spirit
Association, Universal Dance Association, or National Dance Alliance. All-Americans are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading skills at camps across the country. Only the top 12 percent of the cheerleaders who attend Varsity summer camps earn the chance to march in the holiday spectacular. In addition to performing in the London parade, the
All-Americans will have the chance to tour London during their seven-day trip. Seeton and Davidson leave for London Dec. 26 and return to Azle Jan. 2, 2015. “This is the 26th year we’ve been able to bring talented cheerleaders to London, where they can showcase their skills to a very enthusiastic international audience,” says Mike Fultz, Varsity International event coordinator. BY SUE TURNIPSEED The B J Clark Community Center is a good place for Senior Citizens to gather Monday through Friday mornings for fellowship and end the morning with a good balanced meal. Nov. 19 was our Thanksgiving dinner. The dinner meals had to be ordered by Nov. 13. Friday will be pet food delivery, so plan on coming by to get yours if you have signed up for this program. Due to the holidays, dates for delivery have been altered and the next delivery will be Dec. 5. One lady said her daughter will not let her sit around and do nothing so she comes to the Center to be useful and volunteers time to help others. One man who lives alone comes nearly every day to eat and save on his grocery expense. He is able to be useful as he takes out the garbage and puts it in the dumpster. Thanks, Bobby Neal, for volunteering – what you do is appreciated. The exercise classes are the place for getting in shape for the winter months ahead. Call 817-444-0070 to find out the times and types of exercises that are available then join a class. The Center Director, Darlene Holmes, has finished her health tests and is waiting for the results. She is gaining strength and feeling better and will be back on the job as soon as she is completely well.

PFA is a free on-line notification service that alerts subscribers via email or telephone each time a document is recorded in the County Clerk’s office with their name listed as a signing party. More than 36,000 Tarrant County residents have subscribed to protect themselves since 2009 when the program was first implemented. It only takes a few moments to sign up for the service at www.tarrantcounty.com. Select “Sign Up For” from the “I Want To” area of the page. Participants will be notified only when the exact name they have provided is listed as a ‘Grantor’ or ‘Grantee’ on any of 90 different document types recorded in the County Clerk’s Office. A participant will be provided a link directly to the document in question. PFA is customizable in that alerts can be generated by email or telephone call from a PFA representative.

A North Texas woman lost ownership of her home recently when a fraudulent deed was filed transferring ownership of her residence, according to news reports. Because mortgage fraud continues to be a nationwide problem, Tarrant County offers a free service that can protect property owners. “Foreclosures were once the preferred target for criminals trying to take property from homeowners unlawfully,” said Tarrant County Clerk Mary Louise Garcia. “However, as foreclosure rates plummet, criminals have modified their tactics.” The most likely method will be introducing fraudulent documents in the County Clerk’s Office that could cloud title or ownership of property, Garcia said. Each month, her employees reject suspicious documents that persons attempt to enter in the land records that could potentially cloud home ownership, she added. Their job is made easier by the Property Fraud Alert

AHS math, science teams win big in Athens The Azle High School Math and Science team brought home three first place team trophies and nine individual awards from the Athens High School Fall Academic Classic tournament Nov. 15. Of the nine individual awards, five were for first place, and two for second, with a third and a fourth, as well. Snatching up those first place awards were seniors Bernie Duhan for mental math contest –
number sense; Nathan Redmon for general science, Chemistry and Physics; and Chris Caney for calculator applications. Senior Taylor Brown supplied both second place finishes for efforts in calculator applications and general science. New competitor and senior Keni Martin brought home the fourth place award in calculator applications. Seven underclassmen competed alongside the seniors on
the AHS team, and together the team amassed the necessary points to finish first as a number sense team, a calculator applications team, and as a science team. The competition was not structured by grade level, meaning that freshmen, sophomores, and juniors competed against the more experienced seniors. Next up is a Texas Tech meet on Dec. 6.
Springtown man will serve life for child’s death Pettigrew convicted of capital murder by carla noah stutsman A 27-year-old Springtown man will serve life in prison with no chance for parole after he was convicted of capital murder in 415th District Court in Weatherford Wednesday, Nov. 19. District Judge Graham Quisenberry presided over the trial. Rodney Chase Pettigrew told investigators he sat his girlfriend’s 14-month-old son, Kamden Lee Bailey, on a kitchen countertop while babysitting at a residence in the 500 block of Jay Bird Road on Sept. 15, 2011. Pettigrew claimed at the time that when he turned away to pick up the child’s chicken nuggets, Kamden fell about four feet to the floor. When Kamden didn’t respond to his efforts to revive him after about two minutes, Pettigrew told investigators he called 9-1-1. LifeCare Ambulance and LaJunta VFD responded to the scene and transported the boy to Texas Health Harris Hospital Azle. Kamden was transferred to Cook Children’s Medical
Rodney Chase Pettigrew Center (Cook CMC) in Fort Worth where doctors determined he had suffered a severe, life-threatening skull fracture. Kamden died the following day at Cook CMC. Prior to his death, a doctor treating him at the facility said in a written affidavit that “Kamden is not expected to survive his head injuries. These injuries are not consistent with a short fall, but are consistent with severe, abusive trauma. Kamden’s injuries consist of a complex skull fracture.” The jury didn’t buy Pettigrew’s story after hearing witness testimony. “The allegation in the indictment was that the child-victim
was killed by Pettigrew striking his head against a countertop or other hard object” Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain said Assistant District Attorneys Robert DuBoise and Kathleen Catania, who tried the case for the prosecution, called six different doctors who had examined Kamden. Each of them testified that, in their medical opinions, the “massive head trauma” Kamden suffered did not come from a fall off of a counter, Swain said. “They described the injuries as being the result of a ‘high impact/high velocity’ injury which would have been a result of the victim being ‘slammed, thrown, or impacted by a hard object.’” While Pettigrew’s attorney had success during cross examination getting some of the doctors to agree there is a small fraction of the medical community who believe a toddler could be killed by a three foot fall onto the head, all of the doctors who testified were clear that the injuries Kamden sustained could not have been caused by such a fall, Swain concluded.

And then you do those things and you find out that it still wasn’t enough. You’ve got to add something else. And if you aren’t good enough with all that you are doing, certainly no one else is good enough and the result is that it is awfully hard to be grateful in a world where nothing is ever good enough. I have bad news and good news. The bad news is that neither you nor anyone else will EVER be good enough in a performance based worldview. If you are trying to make God or anyone else happy by what you do, it will NEVER be enough. The good news is that our lives matter enough to God that he sent Jesus in His perfect “more than enough” to meet us at our “not enough” and deliver us from a performance based worldview to a relationship based worldview. When God looks at us through our relationship with Jesus, He sees enough. How could we not be thankful?
Thanksgiving buster… not good enough
I
had a great idea for my Thanksgiving week column. I was going to talk about how I am going to boycott every store that opens on Thanksgiving Day and do none of my Black Friday shopping there. Throughout the course of the column I was going to admit that I don’t participate in Black Friday anyway, not because of principle, but because I would rather take a beating than be in the middle of all that craziness. And then I was going to talk about how we should probably all lighten up on the things we let get under our skin. I’m really not a boycott person. That’s what I was going to write about. And then my mind went down a rabbit trail. (Or maybe, for this week, we should call it a turkey trail). I have spoken and written for years on my observation that Thanksgiving has become a second-class holiday for two reasons: (1) because it is difficult to commercialize, and (2) because we are largely an ungrateful culture. But today I am wondering WHY we are so ungrateful. Is it because we are spoiled and self-absorbed? Maybe.
But I think it may also be a common underlying belief that nothing (and no one) is ever good enough. I’m guilty of it myself. Much of my life is dedicated to helpLIFE MATTERS ing leaders and churches Gerry Lewis be more effective. I’m constantly exploring and tweaking my own processes and habits, looking for the slightest improvement. I think that’s a really good thing if we are seeking to grow and to be lifelong learners. It’s a not-so-good thing if the message is “you need to get better and do better because right now you are not good enough.” If you would only pray for 15 more minutes, get involved in one more ministry project, give one more percent of your income to the church or a charitable cause,

This lady worked hard to get an annual Thanksgiving Day
A
nyone ever heard of Sarah Josepha Hale? I confess that I had not until I received my bimonthly Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) magazine this month. In an article she is credited with being mostly responsible for making Thanksgiving a national holiday. The holiday originated in New England in the 19th century, but each state scheduled its own date for it. Some were in October, and others in January with several in between. The South did not celebrate it. Ms. Hale began her campaign to make it national as a way to try to unify the very different sections of North and South. She began working for it in 1846 and continued her quest for the next 17 years before success came. She wrote letters to five consecutive presidents, urging them to support legislation to make Thanksgiving a national holiday. These were Zachary Taylor, Millard Filmore, Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan and Abraham

Lincoln. Lincoln became convinced to support the issue in 1863. Congress later acted. Before it became a national holiday, the only others were George Washington's birthday and July 4. Sarah Josepha Buell was born October 24, 1788 on a farm near Newport, New Hampshire. Her mother taught her at home until her brother, a student at Dartmouth College, decided to share the information of all his courses with her. From age 18 to age 24 she taught school in Newport. Then in 1813 she married a lawyer named David Hale. Her husband continued her education and even encouraged her to write. She published a few poems and stories. Sarah's education and writing ability served her well after 1822 when her husband suddenly died of pneumonia, leaving her with five small children to support. She wore black the rest of her life in an expression of respect and mourning. Fortunately, her husband's Masonic Lodge colleagues provided money to set Sarah and her sister-inlaw up in a millinery shop. The Ma-

authors who contributed articles to it were Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Harriet Beecher Stowe. Hale wrote at least half of the content of both the magazines she edited. She advocated education for women and even helped establish Vassar College. She believed that women needed to be financially independent if the necessity arose. By 1860 the circulation of Godey's Lady's Book was 150,000. Hale wrote in a lot of different genres including novels, short stories, poems, plays, biographies, cook books and etiquette books. Obviously, with the opportunity to write editorials in her magazines, Hale could advocate the national simultaneous day of Thanksgiving that she wanted the government to create. She hoped – to no avail – that a national day of unity and thanksgiving would prevent the breakup of the states. On October 3, 1863 President Lincoln issued his proclamation that the last Thursday of November become a “na-

tional day of Thanksgiving.” Sarah Josepha Hale retired from her editorial duties in 1877 when she was 89 years old. She died on April 30, 1879 in Philadelphia. Oh, by the way, in 1830 in one of her poetry books Hale wrote was included the famous poem Mary Had A Little Lamb. Two years before she died Thomas Edison spoke the opening lines of “Mary's Lamb” (the original title) as the first words ever recorded on his newly-invented phonograph. We've all heard the saying, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” Having to get busy and support herself and her five children with her writing talent let Sarah Hale succeed as a widowed mother. She also became a positive influence on the nation. We remember Betsy Ross and her flag; let's not forget Sarah Josepha Hale and Thanksgiving Day.

Perry, Abbott react to Obama’s action on immigration
P
resident Barack Obama on Nov. 20 announced his decision to take executive action on immigration because Congress has not acted on immigration reform to address the presence and inflow of undocumented residents. “In order to temporarily stay in the U.S. without fear of deportation, these undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and unlawful permanent residents would have to: Have been here 5+ years, pass a background check, pay taxes,” according to information posted by the White House. Gov. Rick Perry reacted, saying, “The president’s action tonight will lead to more illegal immigration, not less.” Governor-elect and Attorney General Greg Abbott said he is prepared to challenge the president in court. Two days before the president’s address to the nation, Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus
jointly announced their decision to extend funding for the ongoing law enforcement surge at the Texas-Mexico border through the end of the current fiscal year, which ends Aug. 31, 2015. Listed as sources of $86.1 million in funding for the extended border security operations are $13.7 million in disaster funds, $47.9 million in Texas Department of Transportation general revenue bond debt service, $17.5 million in Texas Public Finance Authority bond debt service, and $7 million in Emerging Technology Fund revenues. The three officials said they took action “having established the model for securing the border in the absence of federal action.” Funding from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Military Forces and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, to secure the presence of personnel along the border, is subject to approval by the 10-member Legislative Budget Board at its Dec. 1 meeting. Perry, Straus
and Dewhurst are memb e r s of that board. “This approach provides an important bridge to the 2015 STATE legislaCAPITAL tive sesHIGHLIGHTS s i o n , ” Straus Ed Sterling s a i d . “ T h e state's law enforcement agencies will have the tools and technology they need to continue an enhanced presence on the border. Meanwhile, this funding will allow members of the next Legislature to evaluate the state's border security strategy during the session and make adjustments if necessary.” According to the governor’s office, funds for the DPS would include the addition of such

Looking back at Hornet football district winners Titles rare for Azle through the decades by mark k. campbell One reason for the excitement generated by the 2014 Hornet football is that it’s rare for Azle to win a district title. In recent years, getting to the postseason has become easier with four teams advancing. At Houston Scarborough, the Spartans went 0-10 – extending a 57-game losing streak – and made the postseason thanks to playing in a four-team district. But some Azle teams have needed no help when it came to cementing a playoff berth; they won district. The first Azle squad to do so was the 1959 Hornets coached by Don Hood. That group of Hornets went undefeated – still the only AHS
SPECIAL NOTICE
Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, this issue published before the outcome of the Azle-Burleson Area round game. If the Hornets and El Paso Canutillo win as expected, the teams will play in Midland on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. If underdog San Angelo Lake View defeats Canutillo, Azle will meet Lake View in Abilene; the day, time, and site has not been determined. The Dec. 4 edition of the News will have complete stories on the game(s).

Lady Hornet basketball off to rock solid 4-1 start Subvarsities sitting 7-3 Lady Hornet basketball is off and running at all three levels this season. The varsity (4-1) notched another victory at home Nov. 18 with a 53-42 win over Sanger. Peyton Berger shone; she turned in a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Also excelling was Kaycie Dunkerley with 20 points. AHS raced out to a 36-19 halftime lead. Makenzi Bossert’s 11 rebounds led the Lady Hornets. Valarie Matlock added 8 points and 7 boards. The AHS JV (4-1) began the year with a 42-29 win over Richland. Top scorers were Miranda Davis with 10, Breeona Cannon with 9, and Sydnee Stanley with 8 points. Next, Azle blasted Chisholm Trail 54-17. Most Lady Hornets scored

including Davis (12), Rachel Wood (8), Miranda Longbrake (7), and Cassidy Bowen and Cannon (6). The first loss came to Fort Worth Dunbar 37-36. Azle’s 13-point fourth quarter was not enough. Logan Graham paced the JV with 11 points. Murri Jenkins and Davis netted 6 each. Lake Dallas fell to Azle 4130 as Davis scored 11 points and Cannon 8. Sanger topped the Lady Hornets 43-38 in a game AHS led 12-3 after one period. Graham (9), Cannon (9), and Macie Strickland, Sydnee Stanley, and Davis (4) led Azle scorers. The 9th (4-1) opened the season with a 48-35 win over Richland. Hannah Kolar and Savannah Johnson poured in 13 points apiece.
Autumn Johnson added 10 more as an 18-point fourth quarter put away the Lady Rebels. Another win followed, 34-7 over the “Lobos” who did not score in the second half. Kolar’s 9 points was tops. Adding 6 each were Macey Hicks and A. Johnson while Payton Geary scored 4. Central gave the AHS frosh its first loss, 41-27. Hicks paced Azle with 8 points and a trio scored 4 each: Brooke Phillips, Kolar, and A. Johnson. Byron Nelson lost to Azle 4624 in a game the Lady Hornets trailed 8-4 after one period. Scoring big were Kolar (14) and S. Johnson (13); A. Johnson netted 7. Sanger was popped 62-23 as S. Johnson was high with 13 points and Phillips scored 9. Azle led 19-2 after one quarter.
Boys fall in hoops opener The success of the football Hornets is keeping some of those athletes away from other sports – like basketball. Still, the Hornets opened the hoops season at home against Granbury Nov. 18. A one-point first quarter made things tough as Azle (01) lost 62-40.
Bowen Meyer paced the Hornets in scoring and rebounds with 15 and 6, respectively. He hit four 3-pointers. Cole Maxfield and Josh Golliday added 6 points apiece. Other points came from Malachi Slick with 5, and Brandon Martinez and Noah Laduca
with 4 each. Kaleb Patrick grabbed 5 boards and Martinez led with 4 assists. The Hornets finished with 22 rebounds, 18 defensively. Twenty turnovers hurt. Azle plays at Springtown – an old rival – Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

John Vining, 15, set a new racing mark Nov. 8. At a Sports Car Club of America race at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Vining posted a record lap on the 2.9 mile course. While winning his class, the teenager shattered the previous mark by 2.99 seconds with his
time of 1 minute, 47.994 seconds. He said, “Winning my first SCCA race was very special to me as well as setting a track record.” After his record setting effort, Vining qualified the next day to start the first race in fourth position.
In the Grand Touring A Class race, Vining, an Azle High School sophomore, shattered another record – the one he had just set. His new mark became 1:47.68. Vining won his class again. What makes the teen’s efforts unique is that, because
of his extensive racing experience, he was granted a waiver and issued a full competition license. Vining was the youngest racer at the event. His pit crew consists of Dann and Charlotte Vining Stradling and Richard and Janet Baron.
Basketball The 8th A (1-0) beat Creekview 29-15. Harli Wilbanks and Morgan Ashmore were top scorers. The 8th B (1-0) took down Creekview 17-14. The B’s leading player was Krista Medlock who had a doubledouble with 12 rebounds and 1 1

football team to pull that off. However, that 10-0 group lost in bi-district to Olney 34-8. In 1960, Azle was strong again, amassing a mark of 9-1 – including 5-0 in district – and again won the district crown. However, once more, Olney beat Azle in bi-district, 31-13. The Hornets’ next title came in 1968 when AHS went 6-1 in district. But the Hornets ran into another team that would end postseason hopes as quickly as Olney – Plano. The Wildcats spanked AHS 62-20. 17-10 win over Brewer in a contest where Azle converted a long field goal and made a late game fourth down stop. During the season, the Hornets ended Boswell’s 17-game regular season winning streak with a 28-7 victory. The Pioneers, running the Wishbone, were stopped by AHS defensive athletes like Steve Campbell, Randy Harris, and Randy Admire. In ‘71, when just one team advanced to the playoffs, Azle had to beat Grapevine in the 5-3A finale to win district. The game began with both teams returning kickoffs for touchdowns. But the AHS was too much for the Mustangs at Hornet Field; Azle won 35-12 as Russell Rogers scored three TDs. Guess who waited in bi-district? Plano. The Wildcats were led by future Texas A&M/NFL running back Pat Thomas. Coach Wier recalled that before halftime, the Hornet defense had forced Plano into a third and “35 or 40.” Thomas was chased back into his end zone, apparently trapped. But he reversed field and sped to a 96-yard TD. Azle lost to Plano 40-7. From there, Hornet football took a serious nose dive. No Azle team won district again until 1992. That AHS squad battled through a brutal non-district slate 0-5. But once district started, Azle, led by Buddy Brock, went 4-1 in 5-4A. The Hornets demolished Boswell 31-7 to lock up the title. Stephenville edged AHS 10-6 in bi-district. In 1994, an Azle district win-
ning team finally won a playoff game. Just like in ‘92, Azle struggled in non-district, going 1-4. But the Hornets went unbeaten in district, including a rare win over Southlake Carroll, 7-3. The perfect 5-4A mark was cemented when current AHS coach Devon Dorris ran for 144 yards during a storm at Boswell; the game was called after three quarters due to weather. The inaugural playoff victory came over Cedar Hill, 17-14. Dorris, on his back, caught the

Dallas Samuel ended the fun with a 23-3 win over Azle in the Gopher Bowl in Grand Prairie the next week. The AHS team that penetrated deepest into the playoffs was the 1996 team that finished second in 8-4A. That team beat Sherman (280) then Western Hills (24-14) before losing late to Pampa at Texas Stadium when a questionable offensive interference negated the winning Hornet touchdown.

Mockingjay sets up major battle – for next year It’s really Star Wars’ fault. When that movie hit so big in 1977 and word got out that two more were in the pipeline, fans went crazy with anticipation. It seemed like it took forever for 1980 and 1983 to arrive with The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The trilogy craze was on. About the film Trilogies had arrived before the Star Wars trio, but they weren’t planned as such. The Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns ended up being a three-set back in the 1960’s – A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966) – but they weren’t packaged as such initially. A trio of Jurassic Parks arrived, but the latter two were straight up sequels. One set of movies that is a bona fide trilogy are the Back to the Future films. I, II, and III were mapped out and released in 1985, 1989, and 1990. Three other planned threesomes include The Matrix (1999 and 2003) series, The Dark Knight (2005, 2008, 2012) trio, and the Lord of the Rings (2001, 2002, 2003) movies. Then movies began to get stretched out. Twilight, a book trilogy, had its final novel, Breaking Dawn, broken into two parts for moviegoers – 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012. While the films were laughably bad, they followed the footsteps of one Harry Potter. The Hunger Games is following suit with its third book, Mockingjay, being split into two parts. (It remains to be seen if the Divergent threesome will have its final book, Allegiant, turned into two parts.) The splitting process is a proven hit. The Breaking Dawn movies made $281.3 million and $292.3, for Parts 1 and 2, respectively. A single movie would’ve likely collected the
amount their predecessors did, around $300-$325 million. Look for Mockingjay, Part 1 and Part 2 (due next Nov. 20) to shatter Twilight’s two-part marks. Already Mockingjay, Part 1 set the record for advance ticket sales and will certainly reel in the current biggest moneymaker of 2014 so far, Guardians of the Galaxy’s $330.5 million. The plot (spoiler) After the destruction of her home District 12, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) has been housed in the secret District 13. The rebel forces, led by President Coin (Julianne Moore), need a hero, someone to look up to. Lawrence ignited a desire for freedom and Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman), tries to convince Moore that Lawrence as the “Mockingjay” can be that uniting force. But Lawrence isn’t interested. With her beloved Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) taken to the Capitol – and issuing disturbing televised anti-rebel statements – Lawrence is focused on saving him. Finally, she comes around, but her first attempts at filmed Mockingjay propaganda fall flat. That’s when sending her out on a real mission does the trick. Lawrence’s heartfelt dis-

Then what happens next explains Hemsworth’s concern that 13’s extrication force’s escape from the Capitol seemed way too easy... What doesn’t work Man, there is a ton of teenage angst. Again, this is a YA adaptation. But sometimes Mockingjay 1 gets far too close to Twilight land. More than once, the Movie Man laughed out loud at the “sincere” pining go-

which a death was caused in the accident. According to a press release from the Parker County District Attorney’s Office, Lopatesky was 16 at the time of the alleged offense but is 17 now. She was certified to stand

Upon her return, the Hudson Oaks PD detective who interviewed her did not notice any odor of alcohol on Lopatesky or any signs of intoxication, according to his testimony at the hearing. Her blood alcohol level, tested some hours later, was 0.00.

Expert tips for special occasion hair styles Special occasions and parties crop up over the course of a typical year. Be it weddings, birthday parties or anniversary galas, friends and families often gather to celebrate especially momentous events. Part of the excitement of these events is donning formalwear or cocktail attire and enlisting the help of beauty experts to look your best for these memorable events. Experienced hair stylists and makeup artists can transform your look from basic to glam in a short amount of time, and women often rely on the professional expertise of cosmetologists to help them create the perfect party look. April Cornelius, a professional stylist and owner of the business Bridal Hair by April (www.bridalhairbyapril.com), says, “Usually the hair stylist and makeup artist work together and have an easy flow of the clients. They work in conjunction to create looks that are not easily executed by an amateur.” For those with hectic social schedules, Cornelius shares her secrets of hair success to ensure you put your best face forward at the next big occasion. Once the decision has been made to use a professional stylist to work on your hair for a special occasion, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure success. The first step is finding a stylist with whom you will have a good rapport. Ask your regular salon stylist if he or she does special occasion work, or ask for a referral from a friend or family member who has used someone in the past. Cornelius warns against taking drastic measures with your hair within two to three weeks of the event. “Try not to schedule a cut or color right before the party,” she says. “Otherwise you may be stuck with a color or shorter cut than what you wanted. Also, spend time in advance to talk to your stylist about suggested cuts and colors that may enhance your hairdo.” Once you get your gown, hair accessories and veil, schedule a trial run so that the stylist can walk you through different options. “Hair styles are usually based on the type of dress you are wearing, and the stylist can suggest different things,” says Cornelius. “If you choose a style that requires more or party longer hair, the stylist can often adjust by using temporary

The many benefits of buying locally Buying locally is a great way for consumers to find the products and services they’re looking for and help their local economy along the way. The small businesses in your community may be owned by your next door neighbor, who relies

of ways. • Buying locally creates jobs. The number of unemployed men and women has gradually declined in recent years, but those figures are still high in many communities. Buying locally creates jobs in your community, potentially creating a job for you or a friend or family member. • Buying locally helps the environment. Buying within your community reduces the amount of fuel you’re likely to use for a weekend shopping trip while also reducing pollution. In addition, many local store owners use local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of fuel consumed to get products into the store.
• Buying locally creates a more closely knit community. Juggling a career and a family can make it hard for men and women to get to know their neighbors and other members of their community. Buying locally is an opportunity to strengthen that bond with your neighbors, creating a close knit community in which residents may feel safer and more comfortable. • Buying locally is more convenient. Convenience is paramount to many consumers, and buying locally saves both time and money. Driving to a faraway mall or shopping center or paying costly online shipping fees is not nearly as quick or convenient as shopping within your community,
where you can purchase and take home items on the same day without using a full tank of gas or paying for shipping. • Buying locally benefits your local economy. In 2004, the consultancy Civic Economics was commissioned by Chicago’s Andersonville Chamber of Commerce to examine the economic impact of 10 local businesses against that of chain businesses. The study found that of every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 remained in the local economy, while only $43 of every $100 spent at chain stores remained in the local economy. That’s a significant boost to your local economy, and all it requires is shopping at local retailers.

• Buying locally can increase your property value. Homeowners might be able to increase the value of their homes by buying locally. A joint study from Independent We Stand and Civic Economics found that cities with a strong centralized small business district had a 54 percent greater increase in property values than communities that did not have such a district. A more thriving local community, including a thriving shopping district, is no doubt attractive to prospective home buyers. The reasons for shopping locally are many. In addition to helping local business owners, consumers who shop locally are also helping themselves.
