Glenn named to new city post
Sacked!
As Economic Development Director by carla noah stutsman When the city of Azle began its search for an Economic Development Director, officials knew they wanted someone “top notch” for the position. The job opening was posted statewide on both the Texas Municipal League and Texas Economic Development Council websites. “We had applicants from all around the state,” City Manager Craig Lemin said. “We are beyond happy with the candidate we’ve chosen for this position.” Caitlin Glenn is that top notch candidate, and her first day on the job was Monday, Dec. 1. The irony is that Glenn already calls Azle “home” – since May, in fact. Glenn was raised in the tiny town of Wall (its population was about 200 in the year 2000) southeast of San Angelo. After high school in Wall, she studied at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, graduating in 2006 with a bachelor of business administration degree with concentrations in finance and marketing. In the meantime, Glenn’s parents, Hornet Garrett Tidwell sacks Canutillo QB Javier Gomez as Azle’s Marshall Gilbreath (44) arrives to who had moved from Wall to New help. The Hornets lost the regional round game in Midland, 17-10, ending the winningest season ever by an Azle football team. STORY, PHOTOS ON PAGES 9A, 15A! Photo by Mark K. Campbell Jersey, decided to purchase a home
near Fort Worth that could be a “home base” in Texas, since both their daughter and son were at TCU. Coincidentally, the home they purchased was in Azle. In 2006, they moved to Azle permanently. Since graduating from TCU, Glenn has worked in the Austin offices of Ryan, LLC, a state and local tax consulting firm headquartered in Dallas. She was employed in the firm’s Credits and Incentives practice, where she provided site selection, business incentive, and state and local tax consulting services to Fortune 1000 corporations. “The work I did there translates pretty closely with what I’ll be doing in Azle because the Municipal Development District and any business incentive has to be mandated by the state,” Glenn said. “So my experience with state statutes, rules and regulations will be extremely useful in applying business incentives for economic development in Azle.” Glenn believes Azle is very attractive to development because it’s less expensive than some other areas, making it an affordable choice for home PLEASE SEE OPPORTUNITY, PAGE 4A.
Action-packed holiday-themed weekend fun ahead by carla noah stutsman We know your Christmas shopping is already finished, right? And you’re looking for something fun to do this weekend. Look no further: Three major Christmas events right here in Azle are sure to keep you entertained and all three provide opportunities to be a blessing to others, as well.
The Azle News, will begin. The parade will travel from Azle Elementary, turn right onto West Main Street, right onto Industrial Avenue, and right on Central as it heads back to Azle Elementary. After the parade, the fun really begins at 404 W. Main Street, with Santa and Mrs. Clause, live entertainment, prizes, and activities galore. Sponsors for the 2014 Azle ChristAnnual Christmas Parade Azle’s official Christmas Tree, lo- mas Parade and Celebration are cated in front of the Azle Historical Devon Energy, Texas Health Harris Museum at 124 W. Main Street, will Methodist Hospital Azle, and State Representative Charlie Geren. be lit at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. As soon as the tree is glowing, the Annual Christmas Parade, hosted by Christmas Tour of Homes Project Graduation 2015 (PG-15) the Azle Area Museum, Azle Area Chamber of Commerce, Optimist will resurrect a treasured holiday Club of Azle, The Main Place and event in Azle this year with some
new twists. The Christmas Tour of Homes will be presented from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Proceeds from the tour will benefit PG-15, a drug- and alcohol-free, all night party for Azle High School seniors on graduation night. Seven homes – all located in Azle’s Oak Harbor Estates – will open their doors for the Tour, which, at just seven-tenths of a mile, can easily be walked by most people. Wristband/tickets for the event are $10 each, and are available at Fidelity National Title, located at 224 West Main Street, National Bank of Texas, located at 405 Commerce Street, and at Neat Cuts Hair Salon, 104 Church Street. Wristbands will also be available
Adopt an Angel underway by carla noah stutsman You’ve noticed the child at your son or daughter’s school who doesn’t have a coat, and you wish you could help. Take another look: see that little girl? Her single mother is struggling with a difficult decision. Does she make sure her daughter gets the Christmas presents she wants? Or should she pay the electric bill? She doesn’t have the money to do both. More and more, it’s those children without obvious needs who can get left out at Christmastime. That’s where the Azle Lions Club – and the residents of the Azle community – come in. “Angel Tree is a community-wide program where everyone does a little bit to make a big difference in the life of a child,” said Rebecca McNutt, one of three chairpersons for the 2014 Angel Tree program. With help from Azle High School’s Peer Assisted Leadership (PALs), the Azle Optimist Club, and the Azle Police Department, the Lions Club’s Angel Tree program anticipates providing Christmas presents for about 1,200 kids this year. “We coordinate with the PALs from Azle High School, who ‘take care of’ the first 300 Angels,” McNutt said. “The Azle Optimist Club handles the bicycle portion of the pro-
gram.” In fact, Paul Crabtree with the Azle Optimists said the organization has participated in the Angel Tree program since 2012, donating $3,500 toward the purchase of bicycles each year. “Optimists provide the labor to pick the bicycles up and deliver them to families, as well,” Crabtree said. “This year, 140 bicycles will be given to local kids this year as part of the Lions Club Angel Tree program,” Crabtree continued. “The Optimist Club’s annual participation certainly is a big part of the bike portion of the Lions Club Angel Tree program. We buy the bikes from the Azle Walmart, and each child who receives a bicycle also receives a bike helmet. “This is a great partnership between two local organizations, the Optimists and the Lions.” The Azle Police Department plays a vital role in the program, as well. “The Azle Police Department is also key to the program,” McNutt said. “They set up in the Walmart parking lot from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 14, where they accept donations as well as adopt Angels.” Angels are identified according to need by counselors and nurses at school campuses throughout the Azle Independent School DisPLEASE SEE ANGEL, PAGE 3A.

on the day of the tour at the entrance to Oak Harbor Estates. A map of homes will be given to wristband holders as they arrive at the entrance to the neighborhood on the day of the event. AHS senior class volunteers will be on hand to sell refreshments for the tour, including items like cookies, hot cocoa, and spiced cider. Don’t miss this opportunity to see one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Azle all decked out for Christmas. Angel Band Christmas Tour Azle’s own Andrew Greer and his special guest, Nashville singer/songwriter Cindy Morgan, bring their Angel Band Christmas Tour to Ash Creek Baptist Church’s The Meeting
Place for a single performance at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. Admission may be obtained with non-perishable food which will be donated to the Community Caring Center in Azle to help that organization fight hunger in the Azle community this holiday season. Monetary donations will also be accepted for admission in addition to a food donation. A love offering will be taken up, as well. Please don’t be a Scrooge with your food donation – as Greer says, the need is great, and he hopes to meet it with lots of food. Greer is an Azle native and 2000 graduate of AHS. He went on to graduate from Nashville’s Belmont University, and is a Dove Award nominee himself.

Life sentences stand for Azle man
Loud And Proud!
Holbrook’s appeal fails in sexual abuse case by carla noah stutsman An Azle man sentenced in September 2013 to two life sentences and two 20-year sentences for sexually abusing a young girl over a five-year period were affirmed on appeal Nov. 20. A Parker County jury convicted 34-year-old Charles Wayne Holbrook of continuous sexual abuse of a young child, aggravated sexual assault of a child, and two counts of indecency with a child for offenses that occurred beginning when the victim was five years old and ongoing for five years. Holbrook’s sentences were to be served consecutively. In his appeal, Holbrook contended the continuous sexual abuse offense is unconstitutional and that multiple convictions violate the “double jeopardy” protections afforded under the constitution. The Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth declined to hold the statute unconstitutional. Regarding the double jeopardy question, the appellate court pointed out that the jury charge specifically limited the jury’s consideration of charges to certain specific time periods or acts, none of which overlapped. “We pursued a number of charges in this case designed to hold this defendant accountable for just a fraction of the times he molested this young victim,” said Assistant District Attorney Jeff Swain, who tried the case with Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Catania. “We were very clear in the jury charge and in closing argument that the jury could only consider certain acts and time periods as meeting the proof required on particular counts. The appeals court agreed with our position.” During the trial, the victim, just 11 years old at the time, testified that Holbrook repeatedly sexually abused her in wide variety of ways. “This victim was a very courageous little girl,” said Swain. “Not only was she brave enough
to disclose what had happened to her for so many years despite Holbrook’s threats to hurt her if she ever told, she got on the witness stand and told a room full of strangers about the awful things he did to her. Her vivid demonstrations of what he did to her made it crystal clear to everyone watching that this girl was telling the truth.” During the trial, a nurse from Millwood Hospital where the girl was hospitalized for posttraumatic stress testified that the girl told her about the sexual abuse in November 2012. A sexual assault nurse examiner from Cook Children’s Hospital, an interviewer from the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, and a counselor all also testified about the girl’s outcries of abuse to them. The counselor and the girl’s fifth grade teacher also testified about some of her PTS symptoms, which included hiding under a desk, flashbacks, nightmares, and self-harm actions. Asked about the sexual abuse allegation by investigators, Holbrook told them “I’m not going to straight up deny it, but I’m not going to claim it either.” Holbrook admitted he was a regular methamphetamine user and said there were times he just could not recall. “If you asked most men if they had ever had sexual contact with a 5-year-old, they could and would adamantly deny that had ever happened,” Catania told

jurors during closing arguments. “They wouldn’t have to think about whether it had ever happened.” During the punishment portion of trial, prosecutors called a man and a woman, each of whom testified that Holbrook had sexually abused each of them on a number of occasions when they were approximately 10-years-old and Holbrook was 17 or 18 years old. Another punishment witness testified that Holbrook stabbed him during a family confrontation at the Holbrook family home in Azle. “This was the first continuous sexual abuse of a young child case we tried to a Parker County jury since the legislature created the offense a few years ago,” Swain said. “The Court’s ruling
will allow us to keep using this very powerful statute that allows juries to consider the entirety of the sexual abuse rather than just focusing on a specific act. The statute also requires sentences to be served without the possibility of parole.” “The defendant can still ask the Court of Criminal Appeals to consider his appeal,” said Assistant District Attorney Eddy Lewallen, who handled the appeal for the prosecution. “However, that court, our State’s highest criminal appeals court, only accepts the cases it wants to hear. Even if Mr. Holbrook wants them to consider his case, they may choose not to consider it.” Judge Craig Towson presided over the original trial in the 43rd Judicial District in Weatherford.

dent School District and the Head Start program. The Lions Club checks for duplicates – not as much to keep double-dipping to a minimum, but to enable them to reach more kids, McNutt said. “We all try really hard to make sure every Angel gets the right sizes and at least some of the things on their ‘want’ list,” McNutt said. It’s a big undertaking. So far, the PALs have 300 Angels and the Lions, Optimists and Azle PD have about 700. McNutt thinks another 200 could come in before the program is finished. It’s not too late to adopt an Angel. You can do so at any one of the 22 Angel Tree locations around Azle, or at Walmart for the next two weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from 12

noon to 4 p.m. Don’t have time? Don’t know what to buy? No problem. Donation envelopes can be found on every Angel Tree, and your dollars are as happily accepted as the adoption of an Angel would be. “We make it easy with selfaddressed envelopes,” McNutt said. “All you have to do is slide your check in the envelope and put a stamp on it.” Remember to adopt your Angel at any of the 22 local Angel Tree locations listed below. Once you’ve purchased gifts on your Angel’s list, return your Angel and gifts to the Azle Memorial Library. “We have set a target date of Dec. 10 for Angels to be returned to the Library,” McNutt said. “However, the Lions Club building at 412 Commerce Street will be staffed from Saturday, Dec. 13 through Wednesday, Dec. 17, and we will certainly not turn away late Angel returns or donations.” Azle Lions Club President Janet Adkins and Treasurer Kathy NeSmith are co-chairs of the 2014 Angel Tree program along with McNutt. You can adopt your Angel at any of the following Angel Tree locations: • Azle Café • Azle Elementary • Azle Memorial Library • Cattle Baron HOA • Comet Cleaners • Eagle Heights Elementary • El Cerrito Bar & Grill • El Paseo Mexican Restaurant • El Torito Mexican Restaurant • Fidelity Title • J.D.’s Grocery • Joe Rider Propane • La Choza Mexican Grill • Mark Dean’s Bar-B-Q • Marsha Hardin Realty • Moe’s County Kitchen • National Bank of Texas • Pinnacle Bank • Quick Mart • Russell Feed & Supply • Silver Creek Elementary • Bransom Real Estate

by carla noah stutsman An Azle man who ran from Mineral Wells police officers while visiting his parole officer was arrested and charged with evading arrest. According to a report in the Mineral Wells Index, on Nov. 21 officers had been dispatched to the pardons and parole office in the 900 block of Cross Post Road in Mineral Wells to serve a warrant for parole violation on David Wade Lingle, 41. When they arrived, however, they learned that Lingle had just fled the office – first on foot and then in a tan Lincoln SUV. Officers gave chase as Lingle pulled into the parking lot of a hotel, ran through a hallway inside the hotel, exited the back of the building and scaled a fence. Police apprehended Lingle in the parking lot of an adjacent hotel, according to Mineral Wells PD spokesperson Lt. Randy Wright. Lingle was arrested for evading arrest as well as for the parole violation. He was booked in to the Parker County jail the same day. He remained there Dec. 1 in lieu of $750 bond for the evading charge. However, he was held with no bond for the parole violation. Lingle was released from a Texas prison Nov. 21, 2012 on parole until Feb. 19, 2015.

community to see major growth. “Retail, restaurants, and employers will be looking for a place to open business, so we need to position Azle to be their number one choice,” Glenn said. “I just see tons of opportunity in Azle.” Glenn will also be closely monitoring bills as they move through the upcoming Texas Legislative session, set to begin in January 2015. With a new governor for the first time in many years, a lot of things could change at the state level that could impact things here in Azle. She also plans to be involved and build relationships with other Economic Development organizations around the state, something that will pay off by learning from their successes and failures, Glenn said. “I’ll be putting together an inventory of open land available for development, as well as vacant buildings for businesses to occupy,” she said. Even though she calls Azle “home,” Glenn says she certainly doesn’t know all there is to know
Caitlin Glenn about Azle. “Through talking with business owners and citizens, I’ll be able to learn what our shortcomings are, and areas for improvement,” she said. “I’m ready to get started.” Quite naturally a Frogs fan, Glenn is also excited to be permanently located near Fort Worth where she can wear purple and attend TCU games and alumni events.

First graders receive ‘prevent tooth decay’ kits Thanks to the efforts of members of the Azle Masonic Lodge, every first grader at Liberty, Cross Timbers, and Eagle Heights Elementary schools recently received free “prevent tooth decay” kits through the Fantastic Teeth Fan Club. Azle Masons, led by Robert Hobbs, Jr., assembled and delivered kits to the schools. The Fantastic Teeth Fan Club, sponsored by Masonic Home and School (MHS) of Texas, strives to prevent suffering from toothaches, reduce missed school days due to dental problems, and cut costs for dental treatment. Each prevent tooth decay kit contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, healthy teeth sticker, two-minute timer (optimal brushing time), Tips for Healthy Teeth educational information for parents in both Spanish and English, and a summary of MHS services. According to Oral Health In America: A Report of the Surgeon General, tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease—five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever.
Children in low income families are affected by this epidemic more frequently than other youth, with nearly 12 times more restrictedactivity days due to dental issues than children from higher-income families. With more than 1.5 million Texas children living in poverty, there is a great need for preventive dental care. Dental problems also directly affect success for children, with more than 51 million school hours lost each year to dental-related illness. Teachers have judged both classroom performance and classroom behavior to be significantly poorer among children in need of dental care. Pain and suffering due to untreated dental disease can also lead to problems in eating and speaking. MHS is a non-profit organization with a history of helping children across Texas for more than 100 years. Contact MHS by calling 1-877-203-9111; sending an email to info@mhstx.org; or by visiting the website, www.mhstx.org.

Hornets fall in regional to Canutillo, 17-10 Winningest season ever ends in Midland by mark k. campbell One of the most memorable seasons in Hornet football history came to an end at Midland’s Grande Communications Stadium Nov. 29. After leading early 7-0, Canutillo scored the next 17 points and beat Azle (11-2) in the 5A regional Division 2 postseason game, 17-10. Playing before a huge crowd that made the 300 mile drive, fans watched a defensive battle, especially early. Each team could barely muster a first down. Finally, in the second quarter, the Hornets put together a scoring drive. A big play was the conversion of a long fourth-and-13 pass from QB Jamie King to Matt Delprincipe. That got AHS close and Chase Smith punched it in from the 1. After Dylan Tritton’s PAT kick, Azle led 7-0. The stellar play of Azle’s defense convinced Hornet coach Devon Dorris to later try a fake punt in AHS territory. It was intercepted and Canutillo went on to tie the game; at the half, the score was 7-7. But, before the horn sounded, Azle was struck a blow when standout runner Smith hurt his back; he did not return. And that was a blow because King, an exceptional runner, was nursing an injury from the earlier Burleson victory, Dorris said. The second half began with a bang as Rylee McCracken
returned the kickoff into Eagle territory. But Azle couldn’t move the ball. And AHS struggled after an interception by Trey Ramos again set the Hornets up on the Canutillo side of the field. However, Azle labored to move the Eagle defense. Plus a penalty – after a fourth-and-4 conversion by King – killed the effort. “We had a tough time running,” Dorris said. “In the second half, we had opportunities. We just didn’t do much with them.” When the Eagles got a short field, Canutillo drove far enough that their kicker, Frank Avila, nailed a 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Late in the game, Eagle QB Javier Gomez scored, upping the lead to 17-7. Azle fought to the bitter end. King hit Delprincipe for a long pass that shook up the senior receiver. Needing two scores with less than a minute left, Dorris elected to kick a field goal and Tritton was true from 37 yards out. It came down to the onsides kick. The ball bounded, but an Eagle got there first and covered it up. The winningest Azle season ever ended. Dorris said, “I’m proud of the way our kids competed throughout the year, proud of all their accomplishments.” He added that it was a “special season” that united fans, Behind the blocking of Aric Brazell (85) and Jacob Lance (70), Hornet running back Chase Smith (20) heads for the Canutillo goal in Midland during Azle’s regional playoff game. Azle Christian wins football state six-man championship ACS scores most points ever, 114 by mark k. campbell The Azle Christian School football record book took a whuppin’ by the time the Crusaders had mercy ruled Granbury Cornerstone, 114-64 in the Texas Christian Athletic Fellowship six-man championship game in Springtown. The Crusaders (12-0) earned crown No. 3 in the last five years with the convincing victory in a game moved up one day to Nov. 21 because of concerns for inclement weather. ACS’ Josh Crawford had a game for the books. He rushed 19 times for an astonishing 419 yards and 8 TDs. That’s a startling 22 yards per carry, a new Crusader record. For his memorable efforts, Crawford was named the championship game MVP. The Offensive Player of the Game was Azle Christian quarterback Joey Rosamond. He threw for 289 yards and 6 touchdowns, going 16-of-26. Other impressive numbers were put up by Alex Schardt who caught 6 balls for 149 yards and 4 TDs. He also kicked 9 extra points, each worth 2 points. Jake Bartell scored twice while catching 5 passes for 78 yards. It was his first game back from an ankle injury. Jeremiah Carlson ran for 60 yards in the offensive heavy game, Coach Gary Rushing noted. Defensively, Bartell was ACS’ top performer; he was credited with 21 tackles and an interception. Schardt shone, too. He picked off 2 passes and had 4 tackles. Carlson tackled 12 ball carriers. The game stood 52-44 at the State game Most Valuable Player Josh Crawford rushed for an amazing 419 yards half. “It was back and forth for and 8 touchdowns in Azle Christian School’s victory. Photo by Mark K. Campbell a while,” Rushing recalled.
Crusader QB Joey Rosamond directed the ACS offense that scored a whopping 114 points; he was named the Offensive Player of the Game. Photo by Mark K. Campbell But the Crusaders would not be stopped. Midway through the fourth quarter, ACS reached the magical 45-point lead and the mercy rule kicked in. That’s not unusual. In 12 games, Azle Christian played entire contests just twice. In his five years at ACS, Coach Rushing has compiled a sterling mark 56-6. The Crusaders have reached the state title game every time, winning three. The two losses were close, 30-22 and 38-32. Next up for Rushing and five
Crusaders is the Private School All-Star game. Rushing will coach the North squad and will bring Rosamond, Schardt, Bartell, Cody Warren, and Alex Coffey with him. That game will take place on the Azle Christian School gridiron at 6 p.m. Dec. 13. While this season’s seniors were vital for success, Rushing noted that, with the talented Crawford returning next season, the Crusaders will again be a force to be reckoned with.

Wrestlers hit mats as year begins Azle wrestling is recognized as a perennial power. But Coach Chris Allen admitted that his young team needs to get some matches under its belt. “As far as the season outlook, I’m optimistic, but we have some young guys moving into the room with experience for the first time in a long time,” Allen said. The veteran coach said as many as eight or nine of the 14
weight classes could be filled by underclassmen on the boys’ side. “We have a good chance at taking district and having those kids for more time to come,” Allen said. Some veterans are back: Colten Clearwater (competing at 152 pounds), who placed at state last year, and state qualifiers Jimmy Fager (120) and Justin Scarbro (heavyweight). Two others with experience – Tyler Stewart and Marshall
Gilbreath – will vie as well. The girls are well underway with a great start. The Lady Hornets have already won the Coppell Round Up and three girls placed at the packed Arlington Invitational. Veteran Ruby Ariosa, who placed at state and signed to continue her career at Lyons College, will lead Azle. Allen said, “We have good numbers, but the majority of our team is young.”

Athletes to watch include freshman Hali Davis; she won at Coppell and Arlington and comes from the local youth program. Lauren Dale, a former regional champ and an All-American this summer, is also poised to perform well this season. “Throw in one of our new young girls making it to state and we could have another top five finish at the state tournament,” Allen said.
by mark k. campbell When you win the football district crown, some talented players got you there. That’s the case with Azle and District 5-5A coaches showered honors on 25 Hornets and the AHS coaching staff. Azle took a trio of superlatives, specific honors for outstanding achievement. The highest award in 5-5A went to Hornet quarterback Jamie King who was named the Most Valuable Player. Leading Azle, King ran for 1,072 yards and 23 touchdowns while throwing for 1,417 yards and 13 more TDs. He completed over 59 percent of his throws and ended the season with a 120.5 QB rating. He scored a whopping 138 points this season. Trey Ramos, a junior, was picked as the Utility Player of the Year. Playing regularly on both sides of the ball – and likely the QB for the 2015 Hornets – Ramos especially shone defensively as he finished second on the team with 94 tackles. His 5 interceptions led Azle. The third superlative went to head coach Devon Dorris and the other Azle coaches, named Staff of the Year. Three Azle athletes were unimanous First Team picks. Fullback Dalton Cole ran for 231 yards and caught passes for 252 more. He also opened holes for First Teamer Chase Smith who tallied 1,475 yards on the ground. Also unanimous was defensive tackle Garrett Tidwell. He had 44 tackles, a staggering 40 of them solo. Finally, chosen by every coach at the best at his positon
was Johnny Crow. With a team high 122 tackles – over 10 per game – Crow, a linebacker, led the Hornet defense. Eighty-four of his tackles were solo.

AHS was No. 21 last week and moved up to 19 after a 6132 popping of Arlington Sam Houston Nov. 24. The Lady Hornets roared out to a massive lead, thanks to a 27-4 second quarter advantage. That gave AHS a whopping 42-11 lead. The final ended up being 6132. Payton Berger’s 19 points led the way as a trio of Azle athletes reached double digits. Makenzi Bossert scored 14 and Taylor Fulfer added 11. Kaycie Dunkerley just missed, netting 9 points. Lauren Thomas scored 6. Every Lady Hornet grabbed a rebound, led by Thomas, Berger, and Fulfer with 6 each. Kylee Browne snatched 5.
The JV (6-1) defeated Castleberry 43-16 as a slew of young Lady Hornets scored. Breeona Cannon’s 10 was tops. Miranda Longbrake scored 8, Rachel Wood had 5, and Sydnee Stanley 5 points. The AHS JV skunked the Lady Lions in the opening quarter. Next, the JV jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead and went on to beat Arlington Sam Houston 47-31. postseason with a 45-20 drubbing of the Burleson Elks at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex. While the Hornet defense stymied the Elks, the offense was fueled by AHS QB Jamie King. The senior led Azle to an early lead it would never relinquish when he dashed in from 26 yards out on the Hornets’ opening drive. He scored again in the first quarter to help AHS extend a 7-6 advantage. After a scoreless second period – where a mighty goal line stand by the Hornet defense, the Elks had a first and goal from the 1, protected the lead – the game was close at 14-6. But then came an explosive third quarter by AHS that buried Burleson as Azle scored three TDs in less than three minutes. King ran for his third touchdown, just 26 seconds into the third quarter. When Burleson fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Chase Smith ran over from the 1-yard line 41 seconds later. Another fumble by the Elks was converted into Hornet points when King threw to Matt Delprincipe for a 21-yard TD. After the duo hooked up again for a 34-yard score, Suddenly, the third quarter score was 42-6 and the game was iced. Azle had scored 28 points. Burleson added a pair of meaningless TDs against the AHS reserves after the game was already well in hand. Hornet rushers pounded the Elks for 305 yards on 42 carries with King getting 109 and Smith adding 95. The win sent Azle to the regional round.
Hoops boys drop 2 clashes The Hornet basketball team faced Joshua and Cleburne and tumbled to both. Azle (0-3) lost at Joshua Nov. 22, 42-33. No Hornet reached double digits; the leading scorer for AHS was Josh Golliday with 9 points. His 4 steals also led Azle. P Letter to the Editor Ferguson problem is ‘sin not skin’ Ferguson, Missouri is a predominantly black community that has been terrorized by black anarchists and criminals who destroyed many businesses, most of which were owned by black people. National black leaders rationalized and generalized but never condemned their black brothers and sisters whose behavior was so offensive and violent. Destroying an innocent person's livelihood is a moral crime and an attack on their family. Did the anarchists and criminals in Ferguson
ever consider what they were doing to their own community? How many were outsiders promoting lawlessness? Looters weren't stealing food for a hungry family. They were parasites compounding the misery already being inflicted on Ferguson. Instigators were looking for revenge minutes after news of Michael Brown's death spread. Despite not being indicted, Officer Darren Wilson is having to run and hide like a criminal. He also knows that the Brown family still has legal recourse against him. This story is not over for either family. Protestors violating the rights of the general public cannot bring about con-
structive efforts to resolve core issues that continue to undo the hard won significant progress made in race relations across America. Benjamin Watson said it beautifully on his Facebook page, “I'm encouraged, because ultimately the problem is not a skin problem, it is a sin problem.” He added, “I'm encouraged because God has provided a solution for sin through his son Jesus and with it, a transformed heart and mind.” It's definitely going to take something greater than ourselves to heal this nation. 2 Chronicles 7:14. Texas annexation affected presidential politics in 1844
C
itizens today who follow politics closely bemoan that every issue seems to be political with the two parties on opposite sides. Many wish for the good old days. A study of American history reveals that the past wasn't much different. The Texas annexation issue illustrates. President John Tyler knew that a movement for the annexation of Texas in the early 1840s was underway. President Sam Houston of the Republic of Texas urged it. Tyler told his secretary of state, Abel Upshur, to work quietly toward that end without upsetting anyone. Unforeseen incidents changed things. An explosion on a ship in the Potomac upon which major politicians were sailing killed eight people, including Upshur. Tyler appointed John C. Calhoun as his new secretary of state, but Calhoun never approached anything quietly. The former senator from South Carolina made Texas the major political issue of the day. Calhoun wanted to add another slave state to the Union to keep the South's politi-

cal advantage and also to increase its land area. A powerful Missouri senator, Thomas Hart Benton, a Democrat, didn't like Calhoun and vowed to fight the issue of Texas annexation because he saw it as a plot to split the Union. Martin Van Buren, a New Yorker and a former Democrat president trying to be nominated and run again, also opposed the Texas issue, fearing it would split the Democratic party and prevent him from becoming president again. What Van Buren feared came true: Southern and Western Democrats supported Texas annexation, but Northerners did not. The latter did not want another slave state added to the Union. Van Buren wanted to take the annexation issue off the agenda. He had a Northern political base and knew that it would create debates over slavery. Henry Clay, another strong political operative, was a Whig Senator from Kentucky. (The Whigs later faded away, but their remnants formed the new Republican party of Lincoln.) Clay wanted to run for president in 1844 too, and he didn't want Texas as an issue. Former president Andrew Jackson,
a Democrat from Tennessee, had opposed Clay for years, and saw that the Texas issue might be his last chance (at age 76) to thwart his old rival. He believed that territorial expanPAGES FROM sion should WESTERN be the nation's next big issue. HISTORY If Van Buren take J’Nell L. Pate wouldn't on the issue of Texas, Jackson vowed to find someone in the Democratic party who would. A fellow Tennessean and Democrat, James K. Polk, was wanting to be selected by his party as a vice presidential running mate. Jackson decided he might use his prestige to get Polk accepted as a candidate for the highest office instead. (Let me add a chain of presidents here: Jackson 1829-37; Van Buren 1837-41; William Henry Harri-

son, 1841, who served one month and died after he succumbed to pneumonia from a chill he received while speaking outdoors at his inaugural.) Harrison's vice president was John Tyler 1841-1845. With all this political maneuvering going on, President Tyler decided to act. Britain was getting a bit too friendly with the independent Texas, offering financial support if the Lone Star Republic promised never to join the U.S. This would give Britain some influence in the Gulf of Mexico. Britain did not want the U.S. to expand into a major power. Tyler thus decided to get the issue moving while he was president, so he told his then Secretary of State Upsur to begin talks with Houston. Initially, Houston rebuffed him to think over Britain's offer. The person who intervened was Jackson, long-time supporter of fellow Tennessean Houston. Jackson began writing letters to the Texas president telling him he could create “the prosperity & permanent happiness of Texas” by joining the Union. Houston changed his mind and sent a represen-

tative to Washington in February 1844 to talk. By then Upshur was dead, and Calhoun was happy to negotiate. However, in a letter which became public Calhoun wrote that the reason the U.S. was annexing Texas was to protect slavery from Britain's influence. After that, no Northern Senators, Democrat or Whig would support the treaty to annex, which failed. In the 1844 election Clay was the Whig candidate opposing annexation, and Jackson's candidate, Polk, supported it. Texas became the major campaign issue. Whigs in the North and South opposed it. Democrats in the North and South favored. They voted politically, not regionally. Polk won, but before he could be inaugurated, Tyler asked Congress for a joint resolution for Texas annexation which passed. Texas had to agree and write an acceptable constitution, so the date that Polk signed for Texas to become a state was December 29, 1845. Whew! Politics! Letter to the Editor Actions of officials inflamed Ferguson Dear Editor: After watching the endless marathon new coverage of a Ferguson, Missouri Grand Jury’s decision of a city police officer shooting an unarmed black teenager on Nov. 24 and post follow-up of rioting, looting, and arson of hooligans under the guise of legitimate protesters, it has become abundantly clear the stark reality of a rudderless nation in leadership of our elected leaders – and, sadly, even our outlaw enforcement. Case in point: You have a perpetrator identified as Michael Brown who committed a felony of strong armed robbery
of a store, assault on the store clerk, and then a second felony of aggravated assault of a police officer and attempted capital murder of the officer, Darren Wilson. Officer Wilson stopped Mr. Brown as a suspicious person in the middle of a roadway. A struggle happens and Mr. Brown loses his life in the ensuing assault of the officer. During the investigation, Officer Wilson was pre-judged, maligned, and sentenced by Missouri Gov. [Jay] Nixon, Attorney General [Eric] Holder, and even Wilson’s own peers, Captain Ron Johnson of the State Police. Upon completion of the investigation and later Grand Jury, it was absolutely confirmed that Officer Wilson was justified in using deadly force on Mr. Brown. Upon a “no-bill” verdict by

the Grand Jury, I watched law enforcement officers just stand by as these feckless hooligans burned their own police cars and create mayhem. Al Sharpton and other black elected state leaders extolled Mr. Brown as another civil rights hero and further wanted to honor him in the pantheon of other notables like Martin Luther King. On the flip side, Officer Wilson – who was blameless – was forced out of his job by a spineless police chief and city manager; he has a scarlet letter for life in law enforcement. That is the new paradigm of cops now: If Sharpton shows up in your city for 15 minutes of news coverage, go ahead and turn in your badge – your career is over! Joseph L. Bryan Fort Worth

The critical cold shoulder? Penguins is good fun Animated movies aren’t automatic moneymakers (unless you’re Pixar). Dreamworks is 20 years old now and the studio has had its share of hits, too, with just a few misses. About the film Penguins of Madagascar is Dreamworks’ 30th animated movie. Only two have underperformed and just one has flat-out lost money. That dud was The Road to El Dorado (2000, Movie Man No. 333, a 6). It took in just $76.4 million (internationally) with a $95 million budget. The other one that didn’t just go lights out was Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (2003; that early July, the Movie Man chose Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines [#515, 6]), but it made back its $60 million budget with $80.8 million. Of the 30 Dreamworks movies, the Movie Man has missed reviewing eight of them: Antz – Oct. 1998 (the Movie Man chose What Dreams May Come [MM #254, 6]) Spirit: Legend of the Cimarron – May 2002 (the Movie Man chose Insomnia [MM #458, 7 and Best of Year, the only time a 7 has been Best of Year since the inception of the Movie Man in 1993]) Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas Over the Hedge – May 2006 (sometimes a film slips through the cracks and this is one, a great animated movie; instead, the Movie Man saw The Da Vinci Code [MM #667, 5]) Flushed Away – Nov. 2006 (the Movie Man chose Borat! [MM #690, 7]) Bee Movie – Nov. 2007 (the Movie Man chose American Gangster [MM #743, 7]) Rise of the Guardians – Nov. 2012 (the Movie Man chose Lincoln [MM #1010, 8]) Turbo – July 2013 (the Movie Man chose Pacific Rim [MM #1044, 6])
And like the Marvel Universe and Disney, Dreamworks has a slew of animated movies lined up until 2019. Even though a few are originals – coming attractions for Home (due March 27, 2015) are already showing and a bevy of 9-year-old boys will rejoice to know that a Captain Underpants film is set for Jan. 13, 2017 – the usual slate of sequels are queued: Kung Fu Panda 3 (Dec. 23, 2015), How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 2017), The Croods 2 (Dec. 2017), Madagascar 4 (May 2018), and even Puss in Boots 2: Nine Lives & 40 Thieves (Dec. 2018). So, animation fans like the Movie Man can rest assured there’s more good stuff coming…perhaps forever. The plot Skipper (voiced by Tom McGrath), Kowalski (Chris Miller), and Rico (Conrad Vernon) are not like other penguins; they refuse to just march around cutely and be filmed by documentary crews. They break out of line to save a wayward egg that ends up being the final piece to the quartet, Private (Christopher Knights). What works There are a lot of funny visuals in Penguins – several are encased in the Fort Knox incident – and plenty of wacky wordplay: “Drew! Barry! More!” The animation is great and, while the Movie Man didn’t see the movie in 3-D, there were
What doesn’t work The ending is not great. Not every character gets much screen time; Skipper hogs everything (he is the leader). Sometimes the movie is too fast-paced for its own good – there’s almost too much to take in and that can be frustrating.

Best scene The movie takes off quickly with the sequence where Skipper, Rico, and Kowalski save the egg that contains Private. It’s a mile-a-minute scene, jammed with jokes and visuals gags – including a documentary crew filming (and instigating) the action, led by real-life documentarian Werner Herzog. The sequence captures the zest of the rest of the movie: good stuff for kids and for adults.

The rating This is a mild PG. Some penguins turn into monsters and Dave the octopus can be a bit scary, but that’s about it. Summing up The Movie Man is surprised at some of the critical disdain/ nonchalance directed toward Penguins. It’s way funnier than most animated movies; at times, it’s laugh out loud funny. Next up The Movie Man will hunt down Wild or The Imitation Game, likely, before the usual end-of-year rush of higher profile films arrive.

Unhappy holidays
ANGEL BAND
by mark k. campbell “You will grieve.” Brian Brinkmann knows firsthand what loss is – and how surviving holidays can be tough. Brinkmann’s 17-year-old daughter Sarah was killed in a car crash Nov. 17, 2009. As expected, he struggled with the loss until he eventually found GriefShare. A single dad at the time and well involved in ministry, Brinkmann’s world eroded. “I thought church was a place where I could hide my emotions,” he said. But it wasn’t it. Brinkmann, speaking to the Springtown Optimist Club, ventured to North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford and discovered a program called GriefShare. He said he had the typical male response initially to the tragedy: “I don’t need this. I just need some books to read. Stiff upper lip and all that.” But he attended the Christ-centered, Biblebased class. “The first three weeks, I cried,” Brinkmann said. He completed the 13-week cycle. Then he took another. And another. Brinkmann saw the practical program worked. He became a substitute facilitator then a full-time one. “Now, I run it,” he To find a local church c h u c kled, that offers the GriefShare noting that program, visit the web site he conducts www.griefshare.org. GriefShare helps those who have lost loved ones bevy of churches in the area. The structure of the program appealed to Brinkmann – who is a master electrician, holds a Master of Divinity degree, an AA and BA in Theology, and is currently enrolled at Tarleton State University in Stephenville en route to a PhD in clinical psychology. “Adults have grief patterns,” he said. Brian Brinkmann Brinkmann GriefShare Facilitator said he prefers to refer to GriefShare as “an ER for people who have suffered, an ER for grief.” He said, “We try to get people from mourning to joy, from where you are to where you need to be.” The holidays make grieving even tougher: “This time of year is especially tough – and not just if the loss was recent. “But the first holiday season is very hard.” Brinkmann said his personal experience was that he would be OK by the time the holidays rolled around a second time. That was not the case. Even today, he said he sets up a Christmas tree but does not decorate it because “that was Sarah’s thing.” He said his wife and son take care of it. GriefShare gives people that leeway. “It gives you permission to not do things,” Brinkmann said. Because holidays are so tradition-bound, the hurt can be deep. “You learn to make new traditions,” he said. Brinkmann has seen the program benefit many. “You don’t have to walk the journey alone,” he said. “You will grieve. But you don’t have to do it alone.” The next GriefShare cycle at North Side Baptist Church begins Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Texas Health offers low-dose CT scanner
Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle now offers the 64-slice computed tomography Dennis Glen Brooks scanner with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR). The new scanner delivers high-speed, high-quality images with up to 40 percent less radiation, representing an important advancement in CT scan diagnostics for the hospital. This next generation of diagnostic imaging technology scans nearly 40 percent faster Matthew Chaise McDonald than earlier generations, cutting patients’ radiation exposure nearly in half. “The technology enables us to significantly reduce radiation levels for our patients and still achieve quality images,” said Carrie Shirley, director of radiology at Texas Health Azle. “This is important for patients who may need multiple Michael Sherman Scott imaging tests, such as cancer

patients and women of childbearing age,” Shirley said. With earlier generation CT technology, radiologists could deliver lower doses of radiation, but reducing the dosage too much would result in a lower quality image. ASIR is an advanced image reconstruction technique that allows a significant reduction in radiation without compromising image quality. “This is a significant step forward in diagnostic capabilities,” said Bob Ellzey, president of Texas Health Azle. “We’re excited to offer this important advancement to our patients.” For more information about the scanner or to schedule an appointment, call 817-4448640 or visit, www.texashealth. org/Azle.
