High or low, Eagle Mountain Lake benefits the area BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Eagle Mountain Lake is the crown jewel around here, providing recreational opportunities for thousands each year. The man-made reservoir and its sister, Lake Bridgeport, were built in the 1930s to provide municipal a water supply as well as flood control for Fort Worth. Both lakes are owned and operated by Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), along with the Cedar Creek and RichlandChambers Reservoirs. TRWD has also constructed more than 150 miles of water pipelines, 27 miles of fl oodway levees, more than 40 miles of Trinity River Trails, and a 2,200acre wetland water reuse project designed to increase future water supplies for the area. Currently, TRWD and Dallas Water Utilities have partnered to plan, design, construct, fi nance and operate a 150-mile Integrated Pipeline (IPL). The IPL will connect Lake Palestine to Lake Benbrook with connections to Cedar Creek and RichlandChambers Reservoirs to deliver
about 350 million gallons of water per day (MGD) to North Texas when it is fi nished. Substantial completion of the project is anticipated to be accomplished in 2020. The existing pipeline that runs from Richland-Chambers to Benbrook Lake and on to Eagle Mountain Lake has been pumping water continuously into EML since November 2012 with the exception of the month of January 2014 when pipeline maintenance was performed. Twin Points project Phase Two of Twin Points Resort – which TRWD offi cials had hoped to open for the 2014 season – has experienced some design and construction delays that will push that opening into 2015. David Geary, Reservoir Manager for EML, explained that some redesign was necessary to accomplish the goals for the resort. “It’s important that the buildings and infrastructure are built to be extremely durable on the front end in order to keep maintenance costs down over the long
haul,” Geary said. “Historically, that’s what we’ve done and it’s what has worked for us.” The resort is designed to provide parking for 350 cars as well as temporary RV parking. A large swim beach will provide cooling recreation for families and groups. Current plans include an affordable entry fee and the ability to bring food and drinks into the park, making a visit to Twin Points a great option for summertime fun. Plus, food trucks – from one to four of them, depending upon anticipated traffi c – are planned for those who would rather purchase food on site. Work is progressing well on the project, and Geary said a partnership with Tarrant County to pave the parking areas as well as using TRWD personnel to build many of the fi xtures and components are saving on the PLEASE SEE EAGLE, PAGE 26

Of those people who go untreated, a tragically large number fi nd their way to the emergency room, jail, or cemetery. But there is help available.

the No. 1 tee box. No. 5 is a gigantic, par-5 at 468 yards. The course’s signature hole is No. 9 – the green is perched on the other side of a ravine, atop a cliff’s protrusion. The course layout can be viewed at crosstimbersgc.com. The pro shop features the quality equipment from Titleist, Cobra, and Adidas Golf, and has something for every golfer. Whether it is a gift for that special someone or a last-minute purchase before your round, all golfers can find something. Golf balls in every price range as well as logo caps and shirts and even Adidas golf shoes are available. An expansive and functional
practice range greets visitors approaching the clubhouse. With target greens well-placed throughout the range, the practice area will let you tune up your full swing. Practice putting and chipping greens complete with a bunker will help you prepare for your round or fix a troublesome hiccup. Whether it’s time for breakfast, snacks or lunch, the Roadrunner Grill at Cross Timbers can take care of you. The RoadRunner Burrito is a local favorite. If you come in hungry at the turn or after your round, one of the lunch specials is sure to hit the spot. The grill also offers frosty beverages. Many local businesses, clubs and private groups choose Cross
Timbers Golf Course to host their events. And many of those organizations return year after year. The Cross Timbers professional staff assists the charities and groups every step of the way, no matter how large or how small the

School Board members are guardians of the public trust, and through the policies they make are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of local public education. This responsibility often entails difficult choices, self-sacrifice, and exposure to public criticism. However, it also brings
a great deal of personal satisfaction in sharing with parents, staff, and students their academic successes. This crucial responsibility and the closeness of trustees to the voters make their local school board the purest example of democracy our society presents.

A warm welcome The Springtown Chamber of Commerce works to better the community BY NATALIE GENTRY Director of the Springtown Chamber of Commerce, Amy Walker and Administrative Assistant Michelle Deweese strive to make sure anyone who walks into the Chamber Offi ce at 112 S. Main Street immediately feels welcome. They open the doors every day at 8:30 a.m., ready to assist businesses, the community, and anyone else looking for help or information. “Michelle and I feel very fortunate to live and work in Springtown,” Walker said. “We are proud of every business, every board member, and every person that makes this community so great.” Membership investments in the Chamber of Commerce support a stronger local economy. The Chamber gives members a place to belong where they can collaborate with other business owners. Always mindful of the past, grounded in the present, and focused on the future the chamber,
as a whole, aims to make Springtown a better place to do business, work and live. All about Springtown The Springtown Chamber of Commerce was permanently established in 1979 and has been growing steadily ever since. The offi ce is housed in one of the oldest buildings in town, having been erected in 1901 by Sam Roberson who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for having been in business for 63 years, “never owing a nickel nor having a nickel owed him.” In 2013 the Chamber of Commerce grew between 8-12 percent in its three largest events, and 13 percent in chamber membership. Throughout 2014 the Chamber aims to build on the accomplishment of 2013 by providing more advantages for members. One way to do this is by providing local, continuing education that benefi ts business owners.

events. “Our events continue to grow every year.” Walker said. “For example, at the Wild West Festival we have over 200 arts/crafts and concession vendors, great local entertainment and an incredible children’s area. “Last year we added the carnival, which we hope to have again this year.” Walker continued. “And our All- American Bicycle Rally grows every year and soon we will have over 200 riders.” The Sporting Clay Shoot is also gaining popularity each year with more interest and more teams. “We are excited to start planning the 30th Annual Wild West Festival and 15th Annual Wild West Festival BBQ Cook-Off,” Walker said. “We start getting calls from [vendors and community members] as early as January for each of these events so,
to us, that indicates they know where we are and what we are doing.” Each of these big events brings visitors to Springtown every year. These visitors stop and shop, eat at the many great restaurants, and patronize the local stores. Busy in town The chamber also hosts monthly luncheons and meetings that showcase local restaurants and caterers. But promoting business isn’t the only activity the chamber is involved in. They are responsible for the Senior Angel Tree and Springtown Bonus Bucks, both of which go on at Christmas time. Along with the Springtown Beautifi cation Committee, the chamber helps put on the Miss Springtown Pageant in February, which awards a $750 scholarship in honor of a past winner. Then there is the new teacher
luncheon in August which is put on by the chamber to initiate and acclimate new school employees. All in all, the chamber works in conjunction with citizens, businesses, educational and governmental partners to provide a
Garcia’s
positive business environment and improve the quality of life in Springtown. Today’s chamber boasts 230 members, with 28 businesses that have belonged for 20 or more years.

Hospital launches early heart attack care campaign Wise Regional Health System now accredited Wise Regional Health System has been working in conjunction with the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC) to promote Early Heart Attack Care (EHAC). SCPC Founder Dr. Raymond Bahr developed the national Early Heart Attack Care campaign, which focuses on educating community members about the early symptoms of a heart attack, so they can seek medical intervention sooner. The hospital’s efforts to promote EHAC were front and center on March 7 when a surveyor from SCPC visited Wise Regional’s main campus in Decatur, to evaluate whether the facility was eligible to maintain its status as a Chest Pain Center. As a result of the survey, Wise Regional’s accreditation was renewed through 2017. SCPC accredited facilities demonstrate expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with heart attack symptoms. The accreditation process includes rigorous evaluation of Wise Regional’s ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. Wise Regional is proud to offer a comprehensive cardiac program that offers many of the same services and technologies patients would fi nd at Metroplex facilities. In 2013 physicians performed nearly 1,000 catheterization procedures and more than 65 open-heart surgeries, including a number of minimally invasive procedures, at Wise Regional. SCPC accreditation acknowledges that Wise Regional actively works to provide Wise County and the surrounding region with the best possible cardiac care, by: Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved Monitoring patients when it is
not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital “This was our second time to be evaluated for reaccreditation. The bar is raised each cycle,” said Lee Ann Cummings, director of Wise Regional’s Emergency Department. “We are excited that the SCPC once again recognized the effort we’ve put into caring for our patients and educating our community.” The recent SCPC accreditation survey emphasized community education. As part of that initiative, Wise Regional has been working to promote the EHAC program throughout the area. The program reminds the public that heart attacks have beginnings, and encourages community members to watch for the following symptoms:
Wise Regional Heath System has had its Early Heart Attack Care accreditation renewed through 2017. • Nausea • Pain that travels down one or both arms • Jaw pain • Fatigue • Anxiety • Chest pressure, squeezing or discomfort • Back pain • Shortness of breath • Feeling of fullness If you or a loved one experiences any of these symptoms, you are encouraged to call 9-11. Having an ambulance come to you allows medical care to be-
gin sooner than it would if you walked into the ER. Wise Regional also continues to look for opportunities to more effi ciently and effectively treat cardiac patients. Earlier this year, Wise Regional became the second hospital system in the country to use the STOP STEMI application, an app designed to help effi ciently contact and connect health care professionals when a patient experiences a heart attack known as a STEMI. In February, Wise Regional hosted the third annual Heart Health
Expo with an emphasis on Early Heart Attack Care. “People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” said Cummings. “The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.” PLEASE SEE WISE, PAGE 27

Boating safety Low lake levels are expected throughout the summer in North Texas. “No matter what lake you are going to you should spend some time becoming familiar with it before you launch,” Geary said. “Obtain a topo map from any sporting goods store and visit the TRWD website or call the lake offi ce to obtain current lake level information. “Evaporation and demand can change the level of a reservoir up to a foot in one week,” he continued. “Just because you traveled there last week does not means it’s possible today.” Geary also pointed out that

Azle took an average of 1 to 1.5 MGD during the summer of 2013. Several other smaller municipal water suppliers such as Springtown and Community Water Supply also remove water from the lake.

National Bank of Texas all about Azle BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Steve Parker is an Azle guy. So is his staff at the National Bank of Texas. community and small town atmosphere. Diana Rust, Bobbie Baldwin and Sarah Hicks complete the staff at NBT. Having local people helping local folks is a key to National Bank’s success, Parker said. Azle is the focus for the bank and its members and the National Bank of Texas can boast of some experienced personnel. Parker said, “I started in Azle in 1989. And (branch manager) Carissa (Widner) started when she was 17.” “Pretty much all of us have spent years and years in banking. And all of our customers that we have known through the years mostly have come to us.” From its doublewide mobile home beginnings, the National Bank of Texas is now settled into a modern facility at 405 Commerce Street next to the Post Offi ce. At the bank, customers can expect traditional services with hometown flair. “All banking loans – real estate, automobile, business – as well as all the deposit products” are available, Parker said. Customers concerned with the economy are cautious with their
cash and are keeping it in local banks. “What we see is that we have a lot of customers that come to a bank like ours – and all the other banks – to put their money here because they’re worried about putting it anywhere else,” Parker said. “They want a stable environment which would be a bank like ours,” he added. The security of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) insuring deposits up to $250,000 is comforting to customers. Parker said it’s important to him that he and his employees work in the community with the people who are their customers – hence their presence throughout town. Lobby hours for the bank are Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday hours are extended from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. The drive-through is open from 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. MondayFriday and from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday. Benefits of Eagle Mountain Lake are many
Ci Rn
Only Mother Nature knows for sure whether we’ll experididn’t exist, conditions at Eagle ence something similar – or Mountain Lake would be much maybe even worse – than the worse than they are now. She drought of record before it’s all cited the drought that ended in 1980 as an example. Although recreation is a secondary function of Eagle Mountain Lake, Blaylock said TRWD is always very concerned about it. “Low water levels can affect the marinas and cause them to have to move their docks out,” Blaylock said. “We usually release a lot of water from Lake Bridgeport into EML, but this year, we’re not in a position to do that unless we can see some recovery (from the drought).”
