July 4 blaze sends firefighter to Azle hospital Puppies, other animals rescued from nocturnal blaze BY MARK K. CAMPBELL A late-night house fire sent a firefighter to an Azle hospital as a precaution. On the scene in the 1600 block of Coral Road early in the morning of July 4 were Briar-Reno VFD and Azle firefighters. B-RVFD Firefighter D.J. Hammond exited the mobile home and had some issues at rehab, B-RVFD Chief Shannon Smithers said. “He got too hot then cooled down too quickly,” the chief said. “We thought he might be a bit shocky, so we transported him as a precaution.” After receiving fluids, Hammond was treated and released at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Arriving fire units saw flames already through the roof in the 1600 block of Coral Road early in the Azle. through the roof when crews arrived shortly after midnight. An interior attack stopped the fire in the living room and kitchen area and kept it from running through the ceiling. Still, the mobile home was a total loss. Smithers said firefighters saved five puppies as well as adult dogs and cats. “There were a lot of animals in there,” the chief said. He said crews were on scene approximately three hours. Tarrant County Fire Marshal Randy Renois said the fire remained under investigation by Deputy Marshal Mike Rehfeld who was still interviewing and reviewing the situation at press time.
Construction focused on technology center Building should be ready for school start but new gym won’t be BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The working areas around the new Career and Technology Education center (CTE) and the rising competitive gym have gone from muck to dust thanks to the relenting of steady rains. That means substantial work is being done on the two structures altering the face of the high school. However, one building – the CTE center – has a higher priority. Because the CTE center contains
classrooms and is essential to accommodating students when the 2015-16 school year begins August 24, it has been given a higher priority, according to Todd Smith, Azle ISD director of operations. And that looks like a deadline that is being met even though the building won’t be completely finished. Smith said, “At this time, the plan PLEASE SEE CTE, PAGE 2A.

is to have the CTE center ready for move-in around August 15.” With teachers reporting for duty Aug. 17, that works out fine since students will be allowed into the classrooms... provided the city grants an occupancy certification. “There will still be exterior work as well as ‘punch list’ items inside,” Smith said. It’s important to get the kids in because their old buildings are no more. “The reason for the focus on the CTE center is for classroom space – the ag building and auto shop building were torn town,” he said. It will be possible to house needed classroom items elsewhere. Suzanne Murr, director of career and technology eduction, noted that some items are being stored in the high school cafeteria. SENIOR SPOTLIGHT BY SUE TURNIPSEED People over 60 years old should celebrate the National Anti-Boredom Month of July by coming to the B. J. Clark Community Center and joining with others to keep active and have fellowship in a cool place. Call the day before if you want to have lunch and it will be ordered for you. For a volunteer donation of $2 you can enjoy your meal while visiting with friends. Many wore red, white and blue or flags for the barbeque with pork and beans meal that was served July 2 to celebrate the Declaration of Independence. The Center was closed on July 3. Let us celebrate the Fourth of July all month. Tuesday of this week was Food Bank Day and the participants never know what they will receive but know that it will benefit the grocery budget. Thursday will be hamburger day and many
enjoy fresh fruit following the meal. Friday will be chicken salad with fudge cream cookie for desert. If you have not gotten your July calendar come by and pick one up. On Mondays during July ice cream floats are a real treat. Every day ice tea will cool your tea-loving self while at the Center. There will be the semi-monthly AARP Driving Class on the July 23. Taking the class will refresh your knowledge of driving rules and may make you a more careful driver. Call 817444-0070 and reserve a place on the class roll. Pet food will be delivered on Friday, July 10. If you are not here, make arrangements for someone else to pick up your pet food or it may be given to some other person. Thanks to Sonja Smith who has been doing a great job of sorting and handing out the pet food.

County volunteers vital during emergencies
BY MARK K. They deserve respect.” Marshall, who is also the mayor of Aledo and a member of a slew of committees, said CERT volunteers perform a variety of essential services during disasters and emergencies.

Ribbon Cuttings
Susan Gay Flippen 1942-2015
The Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors welcomed The Hip Cat Clothing Store with a June 30 ribbon cutting. Owned by Heathur Dollar who hails from California, the store at 328 West Main Street, Suite 10 in Azle is a storefront for a business that Heathur – who has 14 years of retail experience – started out of her home. The Hip Cat Clothing Store offers tailoring and alterations. Call 817-444-3551 or visit the website at www.thehipcat.net. Susan Gay Flippen passed from this life and into the arms of our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church of Azle. Interment was held at Azleland Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Biggers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to First United Methodist Church of Azle Building Fund, FUMC Agape, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital are requested. Susie touched many lives with her kindness, generosity and shining spirit. Born in San Antonio on Jan. 5, 1942, she grew up in Fort Worth and graduated from North Side High School. She worked at
Lockheed Martin as a senior logistics contract analyst until she retired in 2002. She helped to start the Stephen Ministry Program and then served as a Stephen leader and Stephen minister for many years. She was the consummate volunteer and first with her hand in the air to volunteer to serve. She volunteered for Community Hospice. She faithfully visited church member shut-ins at Eagle Crest and Azle Manor. She established the very principles of servitude in her church and community. Susan loved antiques and loved to travel. She was an artist and partnered with a lifelong friend in a floral design business for many years. She was the ultimate shopper. She had a picture of a little girl with a purse whose caption read: “Those people who think that money can’t buy happiness just don’t know where to shop.” She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Dean Flippen, and her parents, Al and Maxine Gross. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Jerry Milton Flippen; her son, Jerry Scott Flippen; brother, Terry Ray Gross; as well as numerous family members and friends. BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The anticipated, state-of-theart gym going up at Azle High School remains a bit off its projected completion date – but not by much. Todd Smith, director of district operations, said lights are being installed and painting continues on the building. While construction has targeted the Career and Technology Education Center – necessary because it houses classrooms – the gym hasn’t been forgotten, Smith noted. “Although the focus has been on the CTE, they have continued to work hard on the gym as well,” Smith said. Right now, the completion date being eyed is “the middle Hollie Hutson, head coach at Saginaw Chisholm Trail of October,” Smith said. “It is High School, will co-direct an advanced volleyball camp at AHS July 13-15. Unlocking riches: How to make $12,000 per hour
I
t’s the kind of money that would make Christian financial guru Dave Ramsey pass out. You – yes, you! – can make: • $200 per minute • $12,000 per hour • $96,000 per day • $480,000 per week • $1.920,000 monthly • $23.040,000 annually That’s a pretty nice income; you could shout “I’m debt free!” before lunch. Heck, you could almost afford Cowboys season tickets with that kind of cash. So, what’s the key to making such big money? (No, it’s not flipping houses or selling plasma or breast milk [even though I chuckled at seeing the

The keys were on the console inside. D’oh. Oh, well, I just needed to get the other truck key from the Bride. Except that key was safely back in Texas. She never carries the truck key because “it’s too heavy.” That sounds kinda dumb until you factor in that also on her truck key ring are two mini-flashlights and a pair of flash drives. Her key ring weighs about 12 pounds, so she didn’t have it in her current purse. Remember getting those vehicle recall notices that said to make sure you don’t have an overloaded key ring because the weight can pull your ignition right out of the steering column? It’s the Bride’s fault. Anyway, my exceptional skills at
unlocking car doors with a coat hanger exited about vehicle model 1998. And the $15 Slim Jim we bought bent like Laffy Taffy. So we called a locksmith. In jeans and t-shirt, he happily bounced out of his brand new truck, inserted a couple of crooked metal apparatus – while jabbering away all the time in Oklahoma-ese which I do not speak – then opened the door. In 12 seconds! Fee: $40. I did the math for you earlier. Want to get rich? Make $12,000 per hour from people who are at your mercy. Become a locksmith. Mark K. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Gay marriage OK highlights USA’s lost moral compass Dear Editor: Must say that the Judeo-Christian tenets which is the bedrock of our faith as a nation collectively is sure being tested with the legalization of homosexual marriage by the Supreme Court. All across America, liberal minded Americans went into an orgy of exultation with our own President Barrack Obama engaged in a bit of creative gloating of his own, by illuminating the White House in multicolored
lights signifying the so-called “gay pride flag.” Let's please be brutally honest here. That little stunt that Mr. Obama pulled with this light show was pure and simple: It was metaphorically the proverbial middle finger to Christians, social conservatives, and anyone else that has anti-homosexual feelings. Mr. Obama might want to check biblical history with his rainbow tomfoolery. It was God who gave the rainbow associated with judgment of mankind and his disobedience to GOD. Guess what Mr. Obama? There will be no political hacks on GOD’s supreme court to be your lap dogs, stooges, and jesters as you have here on this earth.
This country has lost its moral compass in so many ways now. Unfortunately, even a plurality of evangelical millennium Christians – 62 percent – see a social catharsis and they too support same sex marriage; now there's an oxymoron. The Episcopal church now gives it's blessing to same sex unions. Our men and women in the armed forces are nothing but a petri-dish for Mr. Obama’s social agenda, and The Ten Commandments by GOD in monument form is removed from Oklahoma statehouse grounds by the high courts. This nation is unrecoverable. GOD is coming soon! Joseph Bryan Fort Worth
In Western movies, books landscape can be a major factor
W
ith a long drought just over, perhaps we can relate to a book that wellknown Western writer Elmer Kelton wrote, The Time It Never Rained. His book was about the 1950s. I recently returned from the annual convention of the Western Writers of America in Lubbock, and one of the sessions was The Land as Character: A Study of Elmer Kelton's Work. I already knew, but I heard it mentioned at the session that the WWA a few years back voted Elmer Kelton the “greatest Western writer of all time.” He wrote nearly 50 books, but the award came because they all were so true and realistic to the West. Kelton was born April 29, 1926 at “Horse Camp” on the Five Wells Ranch in Andrews County in far West Texas where it usually is mighty dry. When he was three, his father got a job at the McElroy Ranch near the town of Crane, southwest of Midland. Kelton grew up on the ranch and graduated from Crane High School.
THE
Although his father expected him to be a cowboy, Kelton wanted to be a writer. World War II interrupted his journalism studies at the University of Texas, and he spent 1944-1946 in the U.S. Army in Europe. Returning to Texas with a war bride, Anni Lipp from Austria, he renewed his studies and graduated in 1948. He worked at the San Angelo StandardTimes, Sheep and Goat Raiser Magazine" and for 22 years as editor for Livestock Weekly. He retired in 1990. At the WWA session a couple of weeks ago, one of his sons, Steve Kelton, said that his dad came home from work, ate supper, watched a little TV and went to typing. “And that was every night.” Steve said he went to sleep hearing his dad typing. That discipline and dedication to writing stories about the West resulted in his success and winning many, many awards. Concerning the dry West Texas where Kelton grew up and labored, his wife saw a great contrast from the lush valleys and mountains of her native Austria. When she arrived in West Texas, she said she thought it was “the

back door to Hell.” The panel of commentators on Kelton and the land consisted of his son Steve, movie actor Barry Corbin, and former director of the Texas Christian UniverPAGES FROM sity Press Judy WESTERN Alter. Corbin was an actor in HISTORY The Good Old J’Nell L. Pate Boys, a movie made from Kelton's book of the same title. Tommy Lee Jones starred in the movie. Corbin said that Kelton's characters were not like the formula Westerns of old, with heroes six-feet tall. “His characters were real because he told the truth. His main character might be five-foot seven. Elmer knew the basics of life, and he knew readers would respond to real people.” They did. Publisher Kim Ware

Alter explained that the TCU Press republished about 20 of Kelton's books. Also on the panel, Patrick Dearen, a protegee of Kelton's, said that in his books land becomes the character when the people must deal with it. One of the panelists said that once at a book signing with another author, a long line formed to purchase Kelton's latest novel and get it autographed, but no one was buying the other author's books. Kelton told the next person in line, “wait a minute.” He went around to the table of the other author, bought his book, got it autographed, then went back and sat down. His gesture changed the attitude; people began buying the other author's book too. This story describes what every person on the panel said; Elmer Kelton was a real gentleman and treated everyone well. He was generous with his time in encouraging other authors and attending book events whenever asked. The panelists all agreed that being a gentleman summed up his life. Unfortunately, he died of pneumonia August

22, 2009 at the age of 83 with an unfinished book in progress. During her comments Alter read the opening passage from Kelton's book, The Time it Never Rained. I have a copy on my shelves at home, so I am including exactly what she read. “It crept up out of Mexico, touching first along the brackish Pecos and spreading then in all directions, a cancerous blight burning a sear upon the land. Just another dry spell, men said at first. Ranchers watched water holes recede to brown puddles of mud that their livestock would not touch. They watched the rank weeds shrivel as the west wind relentlessly sought them out and smothered them with its hot breath. They watched the grass slowly lose its green, then curl and fire up like dying cornstalks.” Kelton wrote this in 1973, making the land and the drought the main character of the novel. He could have been describing what happened recently in Texas. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

he U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote on June 29, granted a stay preventing revisions to the state abortion law made by the Texas Legislature in 2013 from taking effect on July 1. The stay will remain in effect while the court is on hiatus. When it reconvenes in October, the court will decide if the issues at stake in the Texas case, Whole Woman’s Health (and others) v. Cole, merit further review. Voting to deny the stay were Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito. Created by House Bill 2 in the second special session of the 83rd Texas Legislature, the law would further restrict abortion providers and complicate patient access to abortion services. He also mentioned strides made in “oversight of taxpayer dollars” particularly in regards to how agencies award and administer private-sector contracts. Finally, Straus noted, “For decades, the state has collected fees for a stated purpose, but withheld the money from that purpose so that it could be counted to certify the rest of the budget. The House reduced that practice in 2013 and further reduced it this session. As a result, hundreds of millions of dollars in fees were reduced, while additional resources flowed to transportation, hospital trauma care and state parks.” Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

Movie Man
Azle News Wednesday, July 8, 2015
Arnold comes back again to Terminate stuff Nothing hurts your head more than a time travel movie. There’s all kinds of crazy rules (depending on the film’s conceit): you can’t touch yourself in the future or past; you can’t step on anything (see the classic 1994 Simpsons episode “Time and Punishment” in “Treehouse of Horror V”); things will get wonky in the future if you fiddle with any past event. It’s that latter one that the Terminator series deals with. About the film This is the fifth Terminator movie. The original in 1984 was one of those movies that became a must-see for sci-fi nerds – and it remains one of the essentials for anyone seeking out the genre’s Golden Era canon (with the original Star Wars trilogy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner, and… well, we’ll just stop there or we’ll fill up the page). The original Terminator cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger as a star. He was coming off two movies as Conan the Barbarian; the original from 1982 remains a touchstone for fantasy fans. (Devotees of that series can rejoice that another Conan is on the [distant] horizon, The Legend of Conan.) It took a while before the Terminator returned. But it did return, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day was exceptional, winning four Oscars. That rare super sequel didn’t arrive until 1991, but it’s even more beloved than the original. Then things got funky. Fans didn’t dig Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines – it took a whuppin’ online right off the bat in 2003, and still does. The Movie Man didn’t hate it (No. 515, a 6), but it was surely inferior to the first two. The fourth Terminator film also got dissed by die-hards. Arnold-free Terminator Salvation (2009, MM #826, 6) was treated by fans a lot like Rise of the Machines, and it looked like
the series might peter out. No chance. Now here’s Terminator Genisys; it, too, unfortunately is not bound for the Sci-Fi Hall of Fame, even with the return of Arnold. The plot (spoiler) Future warriors are fighting Skynet – a man-made computer system that took over humanity. But wouldn’t it be nice to stop Skynet from ever being created? John Connor (Jason Clarke) is alive and the leader of the revolution so his mother Sarah (Emilia Clarke) must have survived in the past which was a big part of defeating the machines. To stop the creation of Skynet, Connor sends back his No. 1 solider and buddy, Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), to again make sure Sarah is safe while figuring out how to stop the software’s initial implementation. However, 1984 is different now. The original Terminator (Schwarzenegger) is now protecting Sarah – who calls him Pops and is aging thanks to being covered with human skin – and the trio eventually is dodging not only that meltyshape-shifting Terminator but a now-evil Connor. Genisys is the worldwide software program that will connect every personal and electronic device on earth that will lead to

the rise of the machines, so the threesome head out to destroy the program before it can go online. They succeed – or do they? What works The Movie Man will fess up: He’s an Arnold fan. There’s something endearing about seeing the Austrian Oak still striding menacingly, still able to tangle with much more fearsome Terminators. And all the computer generation is spectacular. Emilia Clarke also holds her own as Sarah Connor – something most fanboys won’t admit because of the love of the original Sarah, Linda Hamilton. But Clarke is just fine. Kudos to the writers for try-
ing to make some sense of the time travel mythology even if you eventually bail out from tired-head. Fans will enjoy Easter eggs from former movies. Best scene Sarah, Kyle, and Pops get arrested. In a quick snippet of a sequence, the generic “Bad Boys” theme from the TV show Cops plays while the trio is shown getting their mug shots. Kyle comes first. Then teeny

What doesn’t work Boo to the poor character development of a conspiracy theory cop played by the great J.K. Simmons (still the best J. Jonah Jameson from the early century Spider-Man). He gets a nice introduction then goes away. Bummer. Genisys feels rushed. And that makes it boring sometimes. The ballyhooed early fight where Arnold battles an earlier version of himself sets up great but doesn’t go anywhere – and it’s the worst CG of the movie. All the fights look the same with people and machines throwing each other around, back and forth. There’s a stinger about a minute into the end credits, and it’s the most unsurprising, sequel-

Big rains: Big skeeters Second suspect filmed How to fight off those suckers who bear troublesome diseases for man and beast
More trouble brewing? There are 200 different kinds of mosquitoes in America. We are most likely around here to see the Asian tiger mosquito – one of the species that is not shy about attacking in the daytime. Right now, West Nile is the major concern for U.S. Health offi cials. However, “on the radar of U.S. and state health offi cials” is chikungunya – another mosquito-borne disease. That virus is brought here by travelers; while no mosquitoto-human cycle has been seen in Texas, offi cials are keeping a wary eye out.

BY NATALIE GENTRY The Parker County Sheriff’s offi ce has released a photo of the second suspect in a series of vehicle burglaries June 24-25. Last week, a female suspect’s image was broadcast. Now comes an image of a male described as being in his late teens to mid-20s, with short dark hair, wearing blue jeans and T-shirt with a slender or slim build. Earlier, the female was described as white, being in her late teens to mid-20s, wearing a tank top, and having dark blond or light brown hair with a medium to muscular build. Investigators are still seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects. According to Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler, the suspects entered seven vehicles and took personal items belonging to the owners. Quadruple Ds Entomologists refer to “the four Ds” when it comes to managing mosquitoes: Dusk/Dawn – While some are daytime feeders, dusk and
dawn are when the insects usually seek out a blood meal, early in the morning or just before the sun goes down. Drain – All standing water should be emptied completely, places like buckets, kiddie pools, dog bowls, and tires. Dress – Plain colors and long sleeves and pants help in avoidance. Do not wear excessive amount of perfume or aftershave. Defend – Wear insect repellent, especially one with DEET, “the gold standard” for protection. Another option: oil of lemon eucalyptus. Other ways to cut down mosquito populations is to mow high grass and weeds that wipe out insect hiding/resting places. Some insecticides can take down adults; they should be used in shady areas where the bugs are immobile. Using an oil-based insecticide or “mosquito dunk” can be effective, but the poisons can also kill beneficial insects.

We’re under attack Right now, fi ve Texas counties have West Nile activity, according to Texas Department of State Health Services – two on the coast and three right here: Tarrant, Dallas, and Kaufman. Mosquitoes are drawn to humans because of our carbon dioxide and scent. They will seek out birds and wildlife to drink from, too. Dr. Sonja Swiger, a livestock/ veterinary entomologist in Stephenville, said, “Mosquitoes can also be vectors for dog heartworm.” Infected mosquitoes can pass tiny heartworm parasites to uninfected dogs. The parasites can cause permanent damage to a dog’s heart, lungs, and arteries. The worms can be as long as 11 inches and a canine could have as many as 20 in its body. Mosquitoes can also give horses several encephalitis diseases – including West Nile – so all horses should be vaccinated annually, Swiger noted.
Two bloodsuckers The key to controlling the insects is to understand the critter’s life-cycle, Swiger noted. She said mosquitoes can be divided into two types – based on where eggs are laid. Floodwater mosquitoes will lay eggs on the ground in low spots. When rain arrives, the eggs hatch. So, with our recent inundation of precipitation, they are prevalent. Floodwater mosquitoes are “good fl iers and can travel miles from their breeding sites,” Swiger said. She added that the only way to avoid these bugs is to either wear repellent or just stay indoors. The other kind of mosquito is categorized as a “permanent water” bug. Both types’ eggs can be laid individually or in “rafts.” They hatch quickly, in just one or two days. Larvae are next, living just under standing water, hanging down from the surface. This lasts 1 to 3 weeks Pupa is the transition state between larvae and adult. It takes about 10 to 14 days for adults to arrive. During the day, full-grown female mosquitoes tend to rest in shade or in vegetation.

BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Our recent record-setting rains have left a lot of standing water around – nirvana for mosquitoes. In fact, the number of bloodsuckers is “booming,” according to Dr. Mike Merchant, an urban entomologist in Dallas. That’s bad news for humans and other species. And the insect numbers will not be decreasing any time soon. Some carry troublesome diseases. Merchant said, “Not all of the mosquitoes swarming us right now are likely to carry disease, but West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes are beginning to show up in traps.” That happened in May. That’s when Azle again became part of the Mosquito Surveillance and Response Program with Tarrant County and other local cities. Currently, no mosquito spraying is planned for Azle.

Easy and budget-friendly ways to add curb appeal Curb appeal can help a home get noticed in a bustling real estate market. Curb appeal also can contribute to the aesthetics of a neighborhood for residents who plan to stay put, and many homeowners feel an attractive exterior is just as important as a comfortable interior. Homeowners do not have to spend a fortune to improve the curb appeal of their homes. With these strategies, anyone’s home can take on a more appealing look. Clean up A messy, untamed front yard can detract from a perfectly acceptable home. Cleaning up your yard and home’s exterior is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give the place a makeover. Cut back overgrown shrubs, plants and trees. Make sure the front door is clearly visible and that any walkways are edged and accessible. Store garbage pails behind a barrier and keep trash out of sight. Store children’s toys in the backyard rather than strewn across the front lawn. These simple steps can improve curb appeal instantly.
Dress to impress The entryway to a home is the first thing visitors will see. Be sure the front door and entryway are in good repair. A pop of color can’t hurt, either. If you do not like the idea of painting the door a vivid hue, dress it up with a colorful wreath or another decorative accent. Carry your interior design style to the outdoors as well. Welcoming accents, such as cushioned chairs or potted plants, also add curb appeal. Consider painting house numbers on a terracotta pot and filling it with plants. The pot will be decorative and functional. Rely on symmetry Symmetry is pleasing to the eye and easy to arrange. Use it to frame your entryway and throughout your property. Symmetrical use of lighting fixtures, plants, trees, and decorative items really can have an impact.
Don’t forget lighting Outdoor lighting adds appeal and safety to a property. Use lighting to accent a special landscaping feature or to illuminate a Spruce up the lawn walkway. Few people enjoy approaching a dark home, and outA well-manicured lawn can go a long way to making a home door lighting can ensure your property is always well-lit. Rememmore appealing.
