Rain helps EML inch up Wet El Niño predicted to emerge in coming months by carla noah stutsman More than two inches of rain fell in Azle Thursday, July 17, but frankly, we got the short end of the rainfall stick that day. That’s not bad news, however, since the lion’s share of the wet stuff – in some places more than eight inches – fell northwest of Azle, in the Eagle Mountain Lake (EML) watershed. Now that the runoff, much of which came from the Big Sandy Creek area southeast of Bridgeport, has hit EML, it’s up 9.24 inches – from 641.66 prior to the rain on July 17 to 642.43 Tuesday, July 22. Conservation level for the lake is 649.10, which means EML is less than seven feet low for the first time in months. Chad Lorance, spokesman for Tarrant Regional Water District, said weather models indicate a transition into an El Niño weather pattern, which may benefit this area in the fall and winter. “It’s possible we could see some recovery if we get those predicted rains

associated with an El Niño pattern,” Lorance said. But Lorance reminded that on hot July and August days, evaporation can cause a reservoir to lose as much as an inch of water per day. AISD shines in STAAR testing The Azle Independent School District (AISD) continues to exceed state passing percentages in the majority of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) and End of Course (EOC) tests included in the state accountability system. Here’s how specific students who attend public schools in Texas are tested: • grades 3-8: math and science • grades 4 and 7: writing • grades 5 and 8: science • grade 8: social studies, Algebra I, Biology, English I and English II (these tests are a combination of reading and writing) and U.S. History. According to Tanya Anderson, AISD Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Human Resources, Azle outscored the state averages in percentage points in reading in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and English II. The district also exceeded state passing percentages in math in grades 3, 4, 6, 7, and Algebra I. In science, Azle students in grade 5 outscored their peers across the state. However, the district will place some emphasis on a couple of areas – 8th grade science and social studies, Anderson said.

“A dip in eighth grade science and social studies scores will be addressed by ensuring that we are covering the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills at the level that demonstrates mastery,” Anderson said. “These two tests are more rigorous than the previous TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test. We are looking at instructional materials, staff development, and teacher collaboration to ensure student success. “We must pay attention to the state-mandated test scores, but we also focus on preparing students for the future with skills that are not measured on a paper-and- pencil test, such as critical thinking, communication, and working together” Michael Williams, Texas Commissioner of Education, had good things to say about the statewide STAAR test results. “It’s encouraging to see ongoing improvement in core subjects such as Algebra I and Biology as students and teachers adapt to the higher rigor of STAAR,” Williams said. “Academic success for our students today strengthens the Texas of tomorrow.” Students who did not pass the EOC tests had a chance to re-test in July and will have future re-testing opportunities in December and next spring, according to Anderson.

Bingo! Electrical con-man arrested at Oklahoma casino By Natalie Gentry Gregory J. Long, an alleged con artist wanted by the Parker County Sheriff’s Office for the charge theft of property $1,500 but less than $20,000, was taken into custody July 10. Quapaw Tribal marshals apprehended Long and two other previously unidentified associates at a casino in Ottawa County, Oklahoma after being alerted by the United States Marshal’s Service who was working in conjunction with the Parker County Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (FAST). FAST investigators received an anonymous tip about the location for Long and confirmed his presence with casino security staff before the marshals arrived. Long is wanted on charges stemming from reportedly scamming elderly persons in Azle and Springtown. According to the Parker County Sheriff’s office, Long is wanted on warrants or for questioning in four

Ride honors Heard Proceeds help family with expenses by carla noah stutsman Dammion Heard’s family doesn’t believe for one second the 20-year-old wrestling standout took his own life. Now, proceeds from an 80-mile BHeard Benefit Ride as well as a private, fundraising meal will help them continue to pay for a private investigation into Dammion’s mysterious death. The ride is slated for Sunday, July 27, with signups beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Gary’s Paint and Body, LLC, 1341 East Highway 199 in Springtown. Kick stands go up at noon for the ride. The signup fee is $20 per bike, with an additional $5 charge for each passenger. The first 100 people to register will receive a free t-shirt. The ride will be approximately 80 miles, with breaks along the way; it will end at Shinola’s Restaurant in Springtown. Afterward, a special fundraising buffet dinner at Shinola’s for the riders as well as non-riders supporting the Heard family will cost $20 per person. The restaurant will close to the public. The event will also include a 50/50 raffle, with the winner announced at Shinola’s during dinner. Heard, an Azle student and wrestler through his freshman year, graduated

from Fossil Ridge High School in Keller and was recruited by Western State Colorado University, in Gunnison, Colorado, where he earned the starting varsity position in the 125-pound division. He was reported missing in late March; his body was found, hanging from a tree, not far outside Gunnison, four days later. The Heard family has learned Dammion attended a house party the night before he went missing and that he was involved in at least one altercation – possibly more than one – at that party. Coupled with the facts that he filled his car with fuel and made arrangements to meet a prospective girlfriend the next morning, Heard’s family says their son had no reason to take his own life. Western State Colorado University’s website says Heard was a vital part of the 2013-14 Western wrestling team that won the RMAC Dual Title and RMAC/Region IV Championship. It may have lasted a total of three or four seconds, if that. While at least one big city television station reported that the city has requested an investigation into the cause of the quakes, city manager Craig Lemin says that’s not entirely correct. “If we were going to request an investigation at the state level, we would have started with Representatives (Charlie) Geren and (Phil) King – but they were already on top of it,” Lemin said. “Representative Geren has advised us he would get us a copy of the report once it is available.” Once the report is seen by city officials, they can evaluate what needs to be done from there, Lemin said. However, he cautioned, the research will take considerable time and will likely involve officials in all the impacted areas. “Cleburne experienced a series of quakes in June 2009. The geologists collected data for a year and it was 2012 before the report from that study was finally published,” Lemin said. “That report indicated disposal wells may be contributing to the quakes but stopped short of concluding they were the source.” Lemin stressed there is no quick answer to what is causing the quakes in the area and even after some study, there may not be a conclusive answer.

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Administrators, council members, some staff and a double handful of citizens were a bit shaken up at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, when the strongest earthquake to occur to date in the area – magnitude 3.6 – shook city hall during a council meeting. Most of those in attendance likened the experience to feeling as if a vehicle had hit the building – a slight rumble immediately followed by a loud “boom” and more rumbling.

rance explained. “In fact, we’re only using about 91 percent of what we’d expect to use this time of year.” That’s due to a combination of rain in the last few months as well as conservation measures, Lorance said. Interestingly, just days after a so-called “polar vortex” kept daytime high temperatures in the area in the 85-degree range for several days, NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center released its June Global Climate Report. That report says: A) the global average temperature was record high for June; B) June 2014 global average ocean temperature was the warmest for any month on record; and C) the first half of 2014 tied as the third warmest on record for the globe. Those records date back to 1880. Finding “B” appears to support a developing El Niño An Azle PD vehicle closes Industrial Avenue at Main Street during the weather pattern. morning deluge of July 17. “Student safety is our number one priority,” Anderson said. “Hopefully we won’t need to use these protocols, but we want to be prepared.” The curriculum for the drills is provided by the “I Love U Guys” Foundation in Bailey, Colorado. The News continues to receive kudos for work staffers performed in 2013. At the West Texas Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest, the News earned six first place plaques. One of those came in a unique competition – Special Coverage – where judges deemed the News’ reporting of the local earthquake swarm was tops among all entries. That package included stories, photos, graphics, letters to the editor, and layout – one of the latter highlighted by a mention in Texas Monthly for its “cheeky” design. Editor Mark K. Campbell said he was especially proud of that award. “This was an ongoing story that went nationwide quickly. Our staff’s long hours of work – from reporting to designing – clearly paid off,” he said. The judge noted about the Special Coverage submission: “Not only well-written and interesting but an excellent series to educate community readers.” Top honors also went to two

BoonDocks’ burger was crowned the winner.

The Heat

BoonDocks named top lake burger West Bay Marina a close second in first annual competition by Carla noah stutsman In a very unofficial taste test, the title “Best Cheeseburger on Eagle Mountain Lake” went to Boondocks – the newly opened restaurant at Eagle Mountain Marina. That’s according to more than 40 people who gathered Saturday, July 19 in search of the elusive “Cheeseburger in Paradise.” Organizer of the 1st Annual Eagle Mountain Classic Boat Club’s Cheeseburger in Paradise Poker Run/Beer Cruise, Andy Butchard called the event a “sizzling success,” and described it as a “floating poker party that moved from burger joint to burger joint.” Butchard said there were as many opinions as there were judges, and heated discussions about the virtues of each burger and its accompanying fries took place. Instructions for preparation of each burger at each stop came from Jimmy Buffett’s classic song “Cheeseburger in Paradise”:

tomato, Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes, Big kosher pickle and a cold glass of beer, Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer for my Cheeseburger in paradise, Medium rare with mustard’d be nice, Where on earth is that onion slice?”

The group’s first stop was West Bay Marina, where presentation was deemed top notch. The Classic Boat Club’s official commentary went like this: “First, the available slips with deep water were clearly marked with red tape, the entire place was set up for our arrival, and we had the place all to ourselves. All placements on the tables were set, and the beer was served in frozen mugs. The French fries were fresh-cut and cooked in a deep fryer, the buns slightly grilled, and the burgers were prepared exactly like the song specified. The grilled onions were a special touch.” From West Bay, the group “I like mine with lettuce and

headed to Augie’s Sunset Café: “This stop went smooth with rapid delivery times and good burgers. The fries appeared to be frozen and they put the Heinz 57 on the burger and the pickles were sliced on the burger. It was a good burger with lots of vegetables...” Next up, Poppy’s Grill at Lakeview Marina: “This venue has much improved with a second story patio with good views of the lake and a nice breeze. The service of drinks was slow with maybe one waitress but the food arrived in a reasonable time. Their bun was more of a Kaiser bun, thick, maybe a bit dry, but the crunchy fries scored big with salt. The docks were new and clean and docking was a breeze.” Finally, the cheeseburger choosers headed for the final stop, BoonDocks, at Eagle Mountain Marina: “This was the last stop on the tour and they misunderstood our instructions and only cooked two burgers. They quickly cooked the additional 10 it took for all judges to get a

bite. Their burgers were served open faced, thick and juicy, and nothing to complain about. Their fries were delicious and many arguments were heard about them versus West Bay fries. They were tender and succulent and still had some grease after their dip in the deep fryer. The new open air second floor promenade made for a comfortable place to socialize in shade or sun. Drink service went swiftly.” After the votes were counted, BoonDocks’ cheeseburgers were hailed as the Best on EML. They were so closely followed by West Bay that the group decided to award West Bay with an honorable mention. One lucky guest won the $250 poker pot. EML Classic Boat Club members encourage folks to take advantage of the remaining half of summer 2014 by getting out to the burger joints around EML and taste-testing the burgers to see if these judges got it right.

Here’s why we didn’t go home the other day

D

on’t go home, she said. The Bride and I were standing with a friend at the elevators on the 19th floor in one of the buildings of MD Anderson’s massive cancer care complex. We stopped by the Houston highrise to visit a couple who both are fighting cancer. This time it was the husband in a cruel contest with pancreatic cancer and, now, liver. His just-completed procedure had left him unable to eat and he was depressed. We tried to cheer him up and stayed an hour, swapping stories about the Texas coast. Born nearby, he talked about places he loved to eat at – something that he might not be able to do with much enjoyment anymore. Afterward, his wife walked us to the elevators. The Bride and I were trying to decide whether to make the long drive back home to the usual respon-

sibilities that are always there or to cruise on down to nearby Galveston. Our friend smiled with bright but clearly weary eyes, what little hair she had managed to keep from her most recent treatment wrapped in a black do-rag. “Don’t go home.” So we didn’t. I booked a Seawall hotel at the last minute that ended up costing almost as much as my first car. I didn’t care; after our visit, money didn’t seem that big a deal just then. In Galveston, we hopped a shuttle and ventured to a packed restaurant on the bay. I ordered exactly what I wanted instead of buying down to something more reasonable. I got a giant slab of red snapper that was perfect. I was sure the man we had just left hooked up to multiple IV bags would’ve loved it. The next morning, I got up and prepared to jog. It had just rained and it was phenomenally humid. I spoke to a passing woman with her

hair plastered down from perspiration who had just finished her run; I asked if it was a “tad humid” – she said this kind of weather needed a new for huON YOUR word mid. MARK The temperature was 80 Mark K. Campbell degrees with 93 percent humidity and the sun was firing up. The outdoor exercise rule of thumb is to add the temperature and humidity and if the total is above 150, you should reduce your effort by 15 percent. The number that morning was a whopping 173 – in 24,000 miles of running, I’d never exercised with a

figure that high. I took off, padding along the seawall. The ocean was a bit riled by the storm that had eventually come ashore and early-morning surfers were delighted to have bigger-than-normal waves to mount. I got tired fast. At the turnaround, I dropped down to the beach and ran on the packed sand, an occasional wave from the incoming tide reaching my shoes. Soon I was exhausted. I stopped and walked a while, looked at the waves, the surfers, the kids playing in the sand amid the seaweed, the resort town awakening. There was no way I was not going to finish this run – not after what I had seen the day before. It’s corny to “run for somebody,” but that’s what I did that moist morning. I made it back to my starting point, a wooden arch marking the one-time site of the Balenese Room, a sparse

remnant of good days now long, long gone. When I’d finished running, completely sweat drenched, I waded into the ocean, the endless waves soothing my weary legs, then out to the breakers to just stand for a while. Afterward, the Bride and I lounged down at the elaborate pool, the water perfectly cool, surrounded by healthy, well-to-do folks booked into this “luxe” hotel. Good for them, I thought. And our hospitalized friends would say that, too. We could never run with that ritzy hotel crowd, but that wasn’t the point. Life’s about living, well. Today, that was at this snazzy resort. Thomas Wolfe wrote that you can’t go home again. And sometimes you shouldn’t. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and can’t believe he paid $14 for two English muffins and a Coke at the snazzy hotel.

Letter to the Editor Thankful for a family’s annual remembrance Every year I read the “In Loving Memory” article placed in the paper by David Paul Mouton’s family. I never knew David, and I don’t know his family, but after 10 years of

faithfully remembering him by an article in the paper, I feel I now know a lot about David and his family. Here is a son and brother who was greatly loved and is still missed. Their faith is evident and tells me they have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. They trusted God’s will for David’s life, and have full confidence in seeing David again in heaven. I’m glad they always include Da-

vid’s picture, as I will instantly recognize him when I get to heaven and will make a point to introduce myself, and tell him how his family’s articles touched me. How I wish all those who have family members who make it to heaven quicker than planned, had the same beautiful faith as this family.

Financier bailed out America’s debt two centuries ago

have a friend who looks up historical events for each day and emails them. For July 9, she wrote that in 1795 on that day James Swan paid off the U.S. national debt of $2,024,899 with some of his own funds. We have some wealthy folks around today, but I'm afraid that $17 trillion is beyond their reach! Of course, I wondered “Who in the world was James Swan?” I quickly learned that he was another one of those impoverished Scot immigrants who came to America and made good. He was born in Fifeshire, Scotland in 1754 and came to America, to Boston, about 1765 with his family. As a youngster he worked as an apprentice in an accounting house. He was very hardworking and studious and even wrote a book against Britain's slave trade when he was only eighteen. Boston residents already resented Britain's Stamp Tax and other abuses, like a Tea Act in 1773, so at age nineteen, Swan joined the Sons of Liberty. It was from this group that the

original Tea Party participants dressed as Indians, climbed aboard a British ship and dumped 342 chests of British East India tea into Boston harbor on December 16, 1773. During the Revolutionary War, Swan fought at Bunker Hill in 1775 and served as a captain of artillery. In 1776 he married an heiress, Hepzibah Clarke, and began working as a financier to help the American cause. He sold properties that the Americans seized from Tories (Americans who supported the British side) to benefit the war effort. He became a friend of George Washington and Henry Knox who later became Secretary of War. Of course, he also knew Samuel Adams, John Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Thomas Jefferson. He helped fund American privateers and became a financial advisor to several of the state governments. Following the war Swan and his wife traveled to France and looked up the Marquis de Lafayette, who had helped the Americans win. Through

that connection Swan got contracts to supply the French army and became quite wealthy. This brings up his being credited with paying off America's debt in 1795. This really wasn't PAGES FROM all of AmeriWESTERN ca's debts, but it included all HISTORY of the debt that U.S. owed J’Nell L. Pate the to France. This apparently was the only foreign debt that America owed, so that was taken care of. He resold the notes for a profit. He also helped the French government sell expensive furniture that they confiscated from the nobility guillotined during the French Revolution. Some

of the furniture ended up in Boston and can be seen in museums there. In 1795 Swan and his family came home to America. He helped develop part of Beacon Hill in Boston. He earlier bought an island off the coast of Maine that today is named Swan Island. He established sawmills and built a summer mansion there. It is quite developed today. Swan in 1798 returned to France to seek payment of a debt the French owed him and stayed to engage in numerous business ventures there. When the U.S. and France made their deal in 1803 for the U.S. to buy the Louisiana Purchase, Swan was the largest creditor involved. In 1808 a French business partner sued Swan over a debt of two million francs, which Swan said he did not owe. Because as a matter of principle he would not pay it, the French government confined him in a debtor's prison. However, he paid the debts of some fellow prisoners. From America Swan's wife sent him money, and apparently wealthy prisoners were able to live more

comfortably. He basically was under house arrest with servants, cooks, etc. He lived this way for 22 years. In 1830 when King Louis Phillipe came to the throne, he cancelled all debts and set all the prisoners free. Swan was 76-yearsold and in bad health. A story is told that Swan wanted to see his old friend Lafayette one more time and embraced him. Another version of the story says that Lafayette refused to see him. Unfortunately, Swan died in France not too long after his release. His wife previously had died in the U.S. in 1825. Descendants of their four children still live in the U.S. today, some of them in Boston. Fortunes were won and lost often during those days, and this certainly happened to James Swan. When he had the money, he seemed willing to use his financial connections to help his chosen country, the U.S. Another Scot contributed to America. Dewhurst appoints Nelson Senate Finance chair

L

t. Gov. David Dewhurst on July 17 appointed Sen. Jane Nelson, RFlower Mound, as chair of the powerful, state budget-writing Senate Finance Committee. The two-year state budget totals close to $200 billion. Nelson, the first woman in the history of the state to chair the committee, called the appointment “a tremendous honor and responsibility” and pledged that under her leadership the committee would “keep the Texas miracle moving full steam ahead.” She has served as a member of the committee for seven legislative sessions, including the current session. The committee soon will be at work, as state agency legislative appropriation requests pour in. Dewhurst, who presides over the Texas Senate, also named additional members of the committee: Sens. Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury; Kelly Hancock, R-North Richland Hills; Rob-

ert Nichols, R-Jacksonville; and Sen. Charles Schwertner, R-Georgetown. Those senators replace Sens. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, who resigned to take a position with Texas A&M; Bob Deuell, RGreenville, who was defeated in the March Republican primary elections; Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock, who resigned to become chancellor of Texas Tech University; and Glenn Hegar, R-Katy, who is running for state comptroller. Dewhurst also appointed Nelson and three senators to another powerful panel, the Legislative Budget Board. The three are Sens. Kevin Eltife, RTyler; Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls; and Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen. The board is a body of five members of the Senate and five members of the House of Representatives. The body sets the constitutional spending limit and develops the draft appropriations bill. Dewhurst’s term of office ends Dec. 31. Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, and Sen. Leticia

Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, are vying to be the state’s next lieutenant governor. Whoever wins will have the power to appoint all Senate committees. Election law case is heard A state House redistricting plan passed by the 2011 Texas Legislature was challenged in a San Antonio U.S. district court last week. The lawsuit, brought by minority voting rights plaintiffs and joined by the U.S. Department of Justice, alleges the Texas Legislature intentionally diluted the voting strength of minorities in several districts. Also in question is whether Texas should return to the federal voting rights law’s “preclearance” requirement that the state had been subject to since the law was passed in 1965 — until 2013 — when federal preclearance of election laws passed by covered entities such as Texas was struck down in a 5-4 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in Shelby County (Alabama) v. Holder.

Later this summer, the court will hear other cases over the Te x a s Legisl a t u r e ’s 2 0 1 3 House STATE redistricting plan CAPITAL and 2011 HIGHLIGHTS and 2013 Ed Sterling congressional redistricting plans. A decision by the three-judge court panel is to be rendered after all of the cases have been heard.

Court OKs admissions policy The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision on July 15, ruled the University of Texas’ method of achieving racial diversity in selecting incoming freshmen did not violate the constitutional rights of a white student who did not gain admission to the institution in 2008 and sued. Heard by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2012, the case was remanded to the Fifth Circuit for “strict scrutiny,” that is, to determine if the university’s policies were necessary and effective toward enrolling a “critical mass” of minority students. Letters to the Editor No place for politics in kids’ border issue

I was pleasantly surprised by the Editor’s comments in regard to a Christ-like response to the tragedy of the children at the border. [“What Would Jesus Do on immigration? Well, duh” July 9] I would never question the heart of a professed Christian, but it is admirable that Mr. Campbell left politics out of the reality of this complicated crisis. Sadly, a local minister felt the need to respond and toss politics into the mess. Perhaps he doesn’t realize

that war zones of drug cartels and corrupt police in these countries is leaving a huge number of children raped and/or murdered. Perhaps he doesn’t realize that many of the parents of those children have sold all that they own including their homes, and have borrowed thousands of dollars (for them, a fortune) to get these kids out of there. I would have done the same for mine as Mary and Joseph did for their infant Jesus. Perhaps, in spite of false information, he doesn’t realize that the majority of the children are already immunized – in contrast to many of our children in Texas. Maybe he doesn’t know that throughout the entire Old and

New Testaments only a remnant of confessed believers have chosen to really expand the Kingdom of God – not by words but by action. Maybe he doesn’t realize that the Golden Rule is universal and that no border, or flag, or even specific dogma in Christ’s name would alter that response. We often talk about the “New Jerusalem.” It would do all of us good to realize that Jesus wept when he looked upon the old Jerusalem. In a world of outright hate, bigotry, racism, greed, and fear, the Golden Rule is in sharp contrast.

Veteran coaches sound off about hoops state tourney venue change Pros voice mixed feelings about UIL decision by mark k. campbell After Austin hosted the annual boys and girls state basketball tournaments for decades, the University Interscholastic League says no more. Because of housing concerns – availability and affordability – the UIL has moved the popular event to San Antonio’s Alamodome beginning next year. UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said that despite the “rich tradition,” the “difficult” decision was made July 15 to move the event. Two Azle head basketball coaches with 58 years of experience have similar opinions about the change. Eddy Prather, Azle’s head boys hoops coach, said, “It’s a little sad to see the tournament moved because I’ve been going to Austin since the early ‘90s. “On the other hand, it’s also time to move.” Prather, who has coached for AHS girls head hoops coach Mitzi Marquart said she 28 years, said that playing the has mixed feelings about the decision to move the an- tourney at the same time the nual state tourney to San Antonio. For decades, Hornet head basketball coach Eddy Prather had ventured to Austin to see the state hoops tournament. That ends this year. Photo by Mark K. Campbell event in Austin was underway made finding a room near the venue site – the Super Drum on the UT-Austin campus – difficult and insanely expensive. “It takes time to find decent hotel rooms close to the Drum. And the prices? Wow!” Prather said. At the last tourney, Prather said he and his comrades had to find housing in distant Cedar Park, 40 minutes away.

“Teams that qualified for the tourney even had problems with lodging,” he added. He added that parking near the venue was also a nightmare. Lady Hornet coach Mitzi Marquart, who will be entering her 30th year coaching, echoed Prather’s feelings. “I have mixed feelings because my whole coaching career, the state tournament has been in Austin,” she said.

Elite Volleyball Camp at AHS

You know the summer camp season is coming to an end when the football camp nears. Before local youth hit the gridiron, however, a girls basketball camp arrives. On July 28-31, AHS head coach Mitzi Marquart will directed three sessions of basketball: Session I – incoming grades 1-4, 9-10 a.m., $25 Session II – incoming grades 5-7, 9:30-noon, $65 Session III – incoming grades 8-9, 1-4:30 p.m., $70 All campers will learn at the AHS gym. The youth football camp is set for Aug. 4-7 Hornet head coach Devon Dorris will be joined by a slew of fellow AHS coaches as he leads a pair of sessions, one in the morning and the second in the evening. Session I is for incoming second through sixth graders from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Session II takes place from 6:30-8:30 for incoming seventh through ninth graders. Azle’s Kylee Browne (9) was part of a 16-U volleyball team that finished 13th in the nation at the Girls Junior National tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Browne’s teammates hailed from Decatur, Southlake, Arlington Martin, and Arlington Lamar.

Marquart, too, said there was just too much going on in Austin at tourney time. “Austin is very crowded,” she said. “For that reason, I am excited for the change and San Antonio will be a great place to host; it has many things to offer.” The 2015 state basketball tournament dates are March 5-7 for the girls and March 1214 for the boys.

Movie Man

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Purge binges on violence and social comment Hollywood folk will tell anyone who will listen that they usually have no idea whether a movie they just made will be a hit. History is littered with “can’t miss” movies that cratered at the box office. There is no fool-proof genre – one that, no matter the professional input or source – will be a guaranteed success. That goes for thrillers, too.

justed for inflation, it lost over $114 million.) Other movies you might not even remember failed financially even more: The 13th Warrior (1999) ended up $135.5 million in the red (again, adjusted for inflation); Mars Needs Moms (2011, $138.8 million [no problem for Disney]); The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002, the famous Eddie Murphy misfire that lost $144 million); and, the Movie Man is sad to say, The Alamo (MM #555, 4), that 2004 stinker that will never see the $145 million it’s behind. The biggest box office disaster of all-time remains Cutthroat Island (1995), the Geena Davis pirate saga directed by her husband Renny Harlin; it lost $145.4 million and dashed both their careers. It came eight years before the pirate rage hit with Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean (2003, MM #516, 7), but Cutthroat was so bad most folks avoided it. In ’95, the film’s budget was $98 million and another $17 million was spent promoting it. Cutthroat took in just $10 million during its Christmastime release. Its total adjusted loss is a whopping $146 million and it killed its studio, Carolco Pictures. This week’s movie, The Purge: Anarchy is a sequel to The Purge (MM #1039, 6) last year’s modest hit that was micro-budgeted at a measly $3 million and raked in over $64 million. Anarchy, following a summer release like the original, opened well with $28 million – on just a $9 million budget. So why doesn’t everybody make inexpensive movies? Because most micro-budget movies are not good at all. While the exceptions impress, most cheap-o movies are just that.

About the film In no other genre can a “micro-budget” movie become a monster hit than in thrillers/ horror. The Blair Witch Project (1999) was made for almost nothing and became a gigantic success. It remains the microbudget champion at $248 million while costing just $22,500 to make. All the recent Paranormal Activity movies have all been made on the cheap. (A fifth one could be proof that the end is near; the movie – already delayed once – has been bumped to 2016.) The Movie Man was a big fan of the original (2007, Movie Man No. 846, an 8) but not so much of the sequels. That first one was created for just $15,000 and raked in $108 million in the U.S. Insidious (2010), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), the 1978 original Halloween, and the hot-for-while-there Open Water (2003, MM #574, 3) all brought back huge returns on teeny budgets. The flip side of moviemaking is spending a bajillion dollars and the film tanking. Some of these sorts of movies are considered “horrible” when they are not; time is proving that maybe they weren’t the dogs they were deemed to be originally. Heaven’s Gate is an example. The “art-house western” The plot (spoilers) It’s time for the annual Purge was made for the unheard of cost of $44 million in 1980; it – the U.S. sanctioned 12-hour took in only $3.4 million. Movie Man mitted against anyone. Such violence has resulted in a dramatic drop in criminal activity the rest of the year and society has improved. But an underground revolution is brewing against the Purge, led by AfricanAmerican Carmelo (Michael K. Williams) who believes the event is used to rid America of minorities. One man, Sergeant (Frank Grillo), is an unlikely purger, but he ventures out onto the streets with a personal vendetta. There, he comes upon two women, a mother and daughter, being assaulted. Against his better judgment, he saves them. Two others join the trio – a young couple arguing about whether to remain together. When the mother, Eva (Carmen Ejogo) says she can get Grillo a car, he leads them across a city under attack. Aside from the original criminals that roughed up the mother and daughter, another group is seeking the second couple. The quintet bob and weave through the town, avoiding a variety of deadly incidents. However, they eventually get captured then rescued by an unlikely source, freeing Grillo to complete his own personal purge as time runs out. What works The plot is stupid, of course, but it sets up an endless supply

of sequels. Grillo scowls through his part like a B-movie Clint Eastwood. It’s a classic second tier role and he’s just right in it. One group of pursuers is creepy enough, masked or painted brutes whose visages strike even more fear into humanity. A late scene after the quintet is captured ends up with them in a queer, Hunger Gamesesque survival situation. That was a nice twist.

Summing up The Movie Man liked the first Purge better. Taking Anarchy out into the streets wasn’t a bad idea, but, while the movie is directed just fine, the total package doesn’t fulfill the concept.

simply killed immediately like everyone else? One purger unmasks and it looks like the bad guys are actually the good guys. But wait… What doesn’t work Naturally you don’t expect Oscar-caliber acting in a microbudget movie, but Anarchy is worse than usual. There’s a ton of things messed up with the movie’s concept. Sometimes, the streets are crowded with savage groups. Then at other times, the city is wide open with no mayhem visible anywhere. Also: Why would you take a machete into the streets when everyone else is armed with machine guns? There’s a social message here – the have nots kills the (often tuxedoed) elitist haves because the latter are using the Purge to eradicate societal undesirables. But it’s so heavy handed that it’s laughable. It’s like Occupy Wall Street found a camera and made a crappy movie.

Next up A toughie: The 3-D Hercules with The Rock looks goofy enough to be fun. But a cool director, Luc Besson, has made a sci-fi movie with Scarlett Johansson, Lucy. The next weeks are easier with Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Springtown mounted shooter Wadley featured on a reality TV show by Natalie Gentry Marcus Wadley has always pushed the limits, whether it’s been on horseback or on the drag strip. “People have been known to call me an adrenaline junkie,” Wadley said. “I’ve always been one to try things other people shy away from.” A detour His entire life, Wadley has been around horses, but as a teenager he took a detour and competed in motocross. At 12 years old, he was ranked first in Texas and 19th in the nation. A couple of years later he tried his hand at drag racing. That’s where he earned the moniker “Outlaw.” Wadley returned to horseback riding at 16 and spent a few years competing in events such as reining, ranch versatility, working cowhorse, and Extreme Cowboy Races. It was those Extreme Cowboy Races that helped satisfy his need for excitement.

introduced to the offbeat sport of mounted shooting. “My folks and I saw mounted shooting on TV,” Wadley said. “So my mom scheduled a session where we could go out and try it.” After just one outing, the 19 year old was hooked – about two months before the 2008 World Finals. During that time, Wadley was able to qualify for the competition, and he competed at Level 1. Within the first two years of competing in mounted shooting, he reached Level 6 Pro Shooter and won several championships – and set a world record, too. “I just kept working to progress,” Wadley said. “I still do.”

A rising star As Wadley has risen through the ranks of mounted shooting, his tireless work ethic has garnered attention. “I’ve been able to pick up sponsorships for saddles and my truck,” Wadley said. His rise in the sport has A gun Then, in 2008, Wadley was also been featured in Western Shooting Horse magazine both
