Above and beyond: BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Azle took Cowtown by storm Saturday, Oct. 3 to raise money for a new Digital Breast Tomosynthesis machine for Texas Health Harris Methodist Azle at the biennial Levis and Lace fundraiser. A crowd of almost 400 Azle folk, bedazzled and bejeweled in their best western duds, descended on the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards, where they played Casino games, browsed raffl e and live auction items, and cajoled with saloon girls, a ventriloquist and a couple of butt-sketchers. No, you didn’t misread – in fact, people literally lined up to have their butts sketched. Then they headed into the ballroom, where thousands of pink gladiolas fl oated above tables set with sparkling dinner and stemware, to enjoy a gourmet meal prepared by Reata Restaurant. Possibly the most memorable moment of the evening began somewhat comically, as ten people took the stage wearing glow-in-the-dark bras – over their clothing, of course. Each in turn spoke of someone dear to them who has experienced breast cancer, and the humorous moment quickly turned serious. That’s when co-chairs for the 2015 event, Lisa Segelquist and Gwen Gibbons, issued the “3-Minute Challenge,” in which the 10 bra-wearing people collected as much money as PLEASE SEE 2015, PAGE 2A.

PCESD1 adopts budget, tax rate Election looms for Poolville annexation BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN When residents of northern Parker County look at their tax bill, they’ll note one of the the smallest portions goes to Parker County Emergency Services District (PCESD)1. Hopefully, only a scant few will ever discover just how much bang they get from that buck. The PCESD board of directors
approved the district’s budget and tax rate during a meeting Monday, Sept. 28. The board adopted a tax rate of 0.0010 (10 cents) per $100 of valuation. That rate has remained the same for at least the past fi ve years, according to PCESD1 Chief Stephen Watson. The total budget for 2015-2016 as adopted by the board is $4.4
million, Watson said. Of that, $1.5 million is allocated to capital expenses, including two new fi re stations in the Aledo and Annetta areas, upgrades and additions to both the Springtown and LaJunta fi re stations, two new command vehicles and one new brush truck. The remainder of the budget is dedicated to personnel costs, opPLEASE SEE POOLVILLE, PAGE 7A.

Friends, family, local police offi cers and supporters gathered at The Orchard Monday, Oct. 5, to raise money to help with medical expenses for Sha Poe, an Azle woman in need of a new pacemaker. Poe has had her current pacemaker since the age of 14 and recently found out it must be replaced immediately. More than $5,000 was raised during the event, and another $6,000 has been raised on a GoFundMe page at https://dm2.gofund.me/vh4qu52c, where donations may still be made. News, editor win 3 national awards
2015 Levis & Lace sets record
The Azle News earned one first place and two third place plaques from the National Newspaper Association 2015 Better Newspaper Contest. Editor Mark K. Campbell wrote the trio. The first place award went to a column he wrote in July 23, 2014 edition of the News, “Here’s why we didn’t go home the other day.” The column detailed a decision to splurge a bit and stay in a ritzy hotel after visiting two friends with cancer, one of whom recommended “don’t go

possible in the allocated time. They raised $12,253 in three minutes. Event organizers raised $99,900 through sponsorships and table sales prior to the event. Add to that $1,400 raised by the wine pull, $9,175 in raffle sales, $2,560 at the Casino tables, $98 for centerpiece sales, and another $15,850 in the live auction, and the event raised a total of $141,236. After expenses, organizers believe they will net about $91,000 – besting the 2013 Levis and Lace total of $70,500 by $21,000. “The people in the Azle community are always generous; not only with their resources, but with their time as well, Gibbons said. “I’m overwhelmed by the amount of money raised during the three minute challenge. I saw several people wiping their eyes as we stood in honor of loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer.”

home” when that option came up. Judges said of the Best Serious Column winner: “Spare, descriptive, moving. A fine piece of writing.” The third place awards were for an editorial and another column. “Earthquakes: Facts Versus Fervor” was written after activists stormed into Azle and riled up locals. Judges said the January 2014 editorial had “great tone,” a “wonderful approach,” and was “well written.”
The piece that took third in the Best Humorous Column detailed the efforts Campbell had of trying to get a good picture of a blood moon in April 2014. “Tips from the Photographer of the Year” contained some weird, warped photos before a keeper was finally captured. Awards were passed out at the NNA’s 129th annual convention at St. Charles, Missouri. The contest attracted 1,413 entries from 33 states.

If you thought Azle High School Drama’s production of The Wizard of Oz last year was too good to top, think again. Peter Pan is in the wings (pun intended). This year’s drama production, slated for Dec. 4-6, could never be complete without flight, and sources say there’s a signed contract between the Azle ISD and ZFX Flying Effects that ensures the star character – and, presumably Tinker Bell – will rise above the audience. As usual, there are roles for younger students. Auditions will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the AHS auditorium to fill the roles of two pirates, two lost boys, two mer-
maids and two Indians. To qualify for audition, students must be enrolled in Azle ISD and be in grades 1 through 8. Additional information about specific requirements can be found at www.azledrama.com. AHS Drama Director Tia Moen is also looking for 7th and 8th grade students with an
interest in learning lights and sound for an apprentice program. Mrs. Moen will hold interviews beginning at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 15, following auditions. If appropriate candidates are identified, Moen will fill two positions for light apprentices and two positions for sound apprentices.

Azle’s growth spurt detailed n AZLE’S, FROM PAGE ONE.
The Azle ISD gained 315 net students over the past five years, Smith said, pointing to a graphic depicting enrollment in North Texas. The Azle ISD is bordered to the east by several school district’s that saw growth of more than 2,500 students over the last five years. To the west is Springtown ISD, with zero growth in five years. To the north is Boyd ISD with fiveyear growth of less than 250 students, and to the south are White Settlement and Aledo ISDs; both saw growth similar to Azle’s of 250-750 students in the last five years. The housing market in the DFW Metroplex is ginning right along, providing a favor-
able environment for families with children to move into – or around in, as the case may be. The number of homes sales is up 4.5 percent from 2014; the average home price is up 9 percent, while the median home price is up 12 percent. The number of listings in DFW is down 12.4 percent. Average days on the market, at 39, is down 13.3 percent and existing home inventory, a 2.5 month’s supply, is down 16 percent, according to Smith. In simpler terms, the housing market is hot, and homes are selling quickly and at higher prices than last year. Through the second quarter 2015, there were 212 annual home starts within the Azle ISD, with 172 annual closings. As of June 2015, there were 461
vacant developed lots within the district, with another 449 anticipated to become available in the future. Closings on homes sales were up 65 percent above the first half of 2014. That’s all due to several active subdivisions located inside the district, Smith said, as well as a couple of future subdivisions. Active subdivisions include the custom Deer Ridge Estates off Church Road and FM 730 South; Bristol Farm and Golden Pond are both located inside the city of Azle, and builder DR Horton is cranking out its small, inexpensive “Express” starter homes in both. Future subdivisions include Winding Creek off FM 730 South, with 39 future lots ex-
pected to become available in late 2015, and Craft Farms, just outside the city off Scotland Avenue, with 15 future lots also expected to become available in late 2015. So why are all these numbers important to the Azle ISD? Because all those new homes translate to additional students in the district. After studying and analyzing the data, Templeton Demographics summarized its findings with the following projections: • Azle ISD may reach 6,500 students by fall 2017 • Five-year growth = 740 students • 2019/2020 enrollment = 6,896 (current enrollment = 6,156) • Ten-year growth = 1,276
students • 2024/2025 enrollment = 7,432 • Silver Creek Elementary School will exceed 600 students by 2018 • Walnut Creek Elementary School will exceed 550 students by 2016 • AJHS will have close to 600 students in 2019 • Azle High School will reach 2,000 students in 2021 In summarizing growth within the Azle ISD, Smith told Trustees the following: • 2015 year-to-date starts are up more than 100 percent over 2014 and the district could see 200 new homes this year • 2014 new home closings topped 250 units for the first time in seven years • Silver Creek and Walnut
Creek Elementary attendance zones have the most housing activity within the district • Azle ISD can expect an increase of approximately 740 students during the next five years • Azle ISD is projected to have more than 7,400 students for the 2024/2025 school year. Smith also recommended a boundary change that would move the area where Winding Creek is developing from the Silver Creek attendance zone into the Cross Timbers attendance zone. Trustees and district officials are digesting the information in the Templeton report, but the take-away message is pretty clear: at some point, there will be no choice but to build some new schools in the Azle ISD.

of the quality of life is part of Jesus’ mission and the mission of the church ,” Paul Brownback said. “We want to support every area, including healthy lifestyles and healthy living.” He pointed to workshops at the fair that will include subjects such as cardiac health and exercise as well as whole person health and natural health practices. “Along with our partners and these workshops, prayer teams will also be available to pray for individuals, especially concerning health issues,” he added. Perrianne Brownback says she vividly recalls the first time she was presented with the World Health Organization’s definition of “health” – “... a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” That definition has remained unaltered since 1948, she said. “What struck me upon
hearing those words was the complete unity of purpose that the health profession shares with God!” Perrianne Brownback said. “Paul and I have always believed the scientific and medical communities should link arms to lift society toward higher levels of ‘health’ as the WHO describes it.” To that end, Perrianne will conduct a seminar during the health fair on the subject of meditation. “Meditation has become widely accepted among the medical community as a health improvement aid, particularly related to areas of stress management,” she explained. “While many Christians are concerned about the Eastern religious origins of many meditative practices, they remain unaware that there is a Biblical meditation that affords health benefits and specializes in ‘de-stressing’ the participant. God’s Word was meant to be engrafted so that it can release true health to every part of one’s being.”

Poolville annexation election looms ■ POOLVILLE, FROM PAGE ONE.

erations expense and debt service. “Personnel costs have increase about 50 percent over the last two years,” Watson said. “That’s because we’ve increased paid personnel at four of our fi ve department – we’re currently staffed with two paid personnel around the clock plus a paid captain during business hours at the Silver Creek, Aledo, LaJunta and Springtown fi re stations. Peaster has two paid personnel on duty during business hours, as well.” About 9 percent of the total budget is allocated to debt service, Watson added. That goes toward major capital purchases, including four new engines the district has purchased over the last two years. Two new brush trucks the district purchased last year will be unveiled Monday, Oct. 19. Growth of the district appears inevitable – it’s currently planning the addition of about 2,100 homes and an elementary school in the Morning Star addition off Farmer Road about three to four miles north of Aledo. Plus, the Poolville Volunteer Fire Depart-

ment has petitioned the district for annexation, an issue that will be decided in the Nov. 3 general election. “Other than Reno, Poolville is the only fi re department in Parker County that’s not part of an ESD or fully municipally funded,” Watson explained. In the election, voters in the Poolville coverage area will decide whether or not to be annexed into the PCESD1; additionally, voters within PCESD1 must decide whether or not to accept the Poolville area into the district. Both ballot measures must pass in order for the annexation to take place. “There would be no increase in taxes to residents already in the district, Watson said. “The business model is ‘strength in collaboration,’ meaning that the larger the area we serve, the more widely distributed the cost savings are,” he said, adding that three fi re trucks can be purchased at a lower price per truck than purchasing just one truck. “In fact, as we’ve added areas to the district, our response times have decreased dramatically. We’ve also increased the training and capability of volunteers who are responding.”

The Rough Riders got another TD to lead 21-20; but, Azle immediately answered with a 63-yard TD pass to a wide open Bryce Gum from Davis. The 27-21 lead stood until 8:45 in the fourth quarter. Now trailing 28-27, AHS converted a fourth down, but gave the ball back. Then came the curious calls. After getting the ball again at the Hornet 1, Azle turned it over on downs again. A late Saginaw TD sealed the deal.

Grampa says: Now this was music, dagnabbit!
M
y latest addiction is iHeart Radio’s “Classic American Top 40.” Lots of us old timers grew up with Casey Kasem’s voice telling us about songs moving up and down the charts with an occasional “Long Distance Dedication” being seriously intoned by the DJ. It was a big deal to listen to ATF when I was a teenager; coolness hung on knowing the newest and grooviest songs being played on the radio, the ranking based on Billboard’s weekly survey of sales by 100 stores across the country. Recently, I clicked on the station – which alternates between countdowns from the 1970s and ‘80s – while working out and came in at the beginning of a show from June 2, 1971. Now, every generation is sure theirs had the best cars and movies, clothes and – music. Listening (as long as I can) to today’s music, I think I can win an argument hands down as to which is better.
That June, I was about to be 15 years old, and I lived and breathed music and girls. Forty-four years later pushing some weights around – as Kasem told brief stories about each song – I remembered many of them. Including No. 40 “Toast and Marmalade for Tea,” the only hit for a group called Tin Tin; it had a faint whiff of 60’s psychedelia, one that would soon dissipate as the Seventies wore on. No. 35 made me happy. Chicago’s “Lowdown” is hardly ever heard anymore, but I recalled almost every line. Tom Jones was heading off the chart (“Puppet Man” [No. 37]) and so was teen heartthrob Bobby Sherman with his final hit “The Drum” (No. 36). And so, too, was Isaac Hayes whose next song a few months later would be the No. 1 smash, “Theme from Shaft” – right now his “Never Can Say Goodbye” was at No. 33. Strangely (it was the Seventies), that same song was also on the chart higher up where the Jackson 5 had it at No. 14 on the way to No. 2. Four years later, Gloria
Gaynor would turn it into a disco hit at No. 9. In 1971, Carly Simon was ushering in the singersongwriter era with the poignant “That’s Way I AlON YOUR the ways Heard it MARK Should Be” at 31. Mark K. Campbell No. I admit I didn’t recognize some songs. “Cool Aid” was an instrumental by Paul Humphrey & His Cool Aid Chemists; their lone hit was at No. 29. I also didn’t remember “She’s Not Just Another Woman” by 8th Day. Two songs from the highly controversial play Jesus Christ Superstar (how quickly we forget) were on the chart. “Superstar” by Murray Head (No. 15) and Helen Reddy’s “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” (No. 13).
Two versions of the latter became hits – Reddy’s first then, later in 1971, Yvonne Elliman’s. Reddy charted higher, 13 to 28. A third religious song was in the Top 40, too: “Put Your Hand in the Hand” by Ocean, a one-hit wonder that made it all the way to No. 2. (I recalled all those words.) Two novelty songs were having success. Daddy Dewdrop’s “ChickA-Boom” (No. 20, from a Saturday morning cartoon called Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies [!]) and the hilarious – and one of my favorites ever since – Jerry Reed’s “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot.” The chart was filled with all kinds of great music. Soul: Wilson Pickett (“Don’t Knock My Love (Part 1)” at No. 17 and “Bride Over Troubled Waters” by Aretha Franklin (No. 10). Pop: “If” by Bread (No. 25), “Double Lovin’” by the Osmonds (No. 16), “I’ll Meet You Halfway” by The Partridge Family (No. 9), and “Rainy Days and Mondays” by the Carpenters (No. 3).
Rock: The Guess Who’s “Albert Flasher (No. 34), The Doors’ “Love Her Madly” (No. 21), and the Rolling Stones’ “Brown Sugar” (No. 2). Can today’s music match that diversity? I’ll put my teenage singers up against anyone’s: Carly Simon or Miley Cyrus? Please! Aretha Franklin or Beyonce? Even Queen Bee would acquiesce to the Queen of Soul. Wilson Pickett or Drake! No way! The Rolling Stones or Foo Fighters. Duh. (But FF is cool.) Oh, yeah, the No. 1 song in June 1971 was “Want Ads” by The Honey Cone. For you young ‘uns today, want ads used to be in the back of newspapers and…oh, never mind…go back to your Auto-Tuning “music.” Bless this generation’s hearts. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and the Song of the Year in 1971 was the infectious “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night. Go up to your grandparents and sing “Jeremiah was a bullfrog” and see if they don’t reply “Was a good friend of mine.” Bet they do!

Daughters of the American Revolution is 125 years old
S
unday, October 11, 2015 will be the official 125th birthday of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The first DAR chapter met October 11, 1890 at the home of one of the first four members, Mary Smith Lockwood. The four, who all are considered co-founders, also include Ellen Hardin Walworth, Mary Desha and Eugenia Washington, the latter a great-grand niece of George Washington. The four women had been talking and working since July, 1890 to create their own society after the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) refused to let women join. The men's group began only the year before on April 30, 1889. When the men refused to let the women join, the story goes that Mary Lockwood wrote an article about Hannah White Arnett in the Washington Post. Hannah Arnett was a heroic woman during the Revolutionary War. In Elizabethtown, New Jersey (now Elizabeth, NJ), a group of men were
THE
meeting in her house talking about an offer from British officials to give them “protection of life and property” if they would proclaim their loyalty to Great Britain. Apparently the men were considering the offer. Mrs. Arnett overheard their discussion and interrupted, calling them “cowards and traitors.” Isaac Arnett, Hannah's husband, tried to hustle her out of the room, but she kept up her harangue, even threatening to leave Isaac if he failed to support the American cause. The men finally refused the British offer. After Mary Lockwood's article about Hannah's heroism came out in the Washington Post, a great-grandson of Hannah, William O. McDowell, wrote an article in the same newspaper offering to help the women form a society of their own called the Daughters of the American Revolution. An organizational meeting was held August 9, but the official date of beginning is when the first chapter was formed, October 11, 1890. Lending her support to the effort was Caroline Scott Harrison, the wife of the current president, Benjamin

Harrison. She became the first President General of DAR, the title leaders of the group still hold. Since that first meeting, the non-profit group has chapters in all 50 U.S. states PAGES FROM and the District Columbia. WESTERN of Chapters also HISTORY exist in AusAustria, J’Nell L. Pate tralia, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom. Since 1890 nearly a million women have traced their lineage from someone who served in one capacity or another during the revolution. This qualified them to join the DAR. Current membership of ladies in the society totals approximately 180,000 in 3,000 chapters in the U.S. and Publisher Kim Ware

abroad. The motto of DAR is “God, Home and Country.” The DAR chapters raise money to do historic preservation and other patriotic tasks. They currently contribute over one million dollars per year to support six schools and provide $100,000 in scholarships to Indian youth each year. They award $150,000 each year in scholarships to high school graduates. They also support veterans by volunteering in veterans' hospitals. They send care packages to America's men and women in uniform in current conflicts abroad. They also sponsor special programs promoting the Constitution during the official Constitution Week September 17-23, a week which they lobbied to create. They also participate in naturalization ceremonies. During the current three-year administration that includes the 125th anniversary of DAR, the organization has issued a challenge to its membership to complete 10 million hours of service to America. In addition, DAR members all over the country will participate in the National DAR Day of Service October

11, 2015. The local chapter, Eagle Mountain NSDAR, plans to meet at 2 p.m. that day to do cleanup work at historic Nelson Cemetery near Azle as its activity. Well-known current DAR members include Laura Welch Bush, Rosalynn Smith Carter, Bo Derek, Elizabeth Hanford Dole, Janet Reno and Phyllis Schlafly. Hopefully, on October 11, many present DAR members will pause to remember those four ladies who began the DAR 125 years ago. It would be nice, too, if they would think of Hannah White Arnett who spoke so forcefully to a group of men in her house in 1776 that they remained loyal to the struggling American cause. In a way, she played a part in creating DAR too. The Daughters of the American Revolution is a tremendously worthy, patriotic group, and I am proud to be a member myself through my dad's ancestry. My patriot was Ralph Rogers from South Carolina. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle hasauthoredseveralbooks, manyofwhich are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

Why you shouldn’t use the ‘no-huddle’ offense
H
uddle up! was heard often in those Saturday and Sunday afternoon football games in the Leroy Price Memorial Park in Pyote, Texas in the mid-1970’s. When the age range of your team is 8 - 18, it’s important to get on the same page. “Gerry, go left to the third tree and cut across the middle. Travis, go left and long. Greg-o, go right to the first tree and stop. I’ll hit whoever is open.” The “no-huddle” offense wasn’t something we had heard of back then. Now, teams use it to try to get the upper hand by scoring quickly and by keeping the defense off balance and unable to run its practiced
schemes and match-ups. (Doesn’t that sound like I know what I’m talking about?) The “nohuddle” is, however, a short-term strategy because it is limited to the players on the LIFE MATTERS field, depends on the insight Gerry Lewis of one really busy leader, and moves at a pace that is unsustainable over an extended period. It requires a ton of pre-no-
huddle-huddles to prepare for the game. The huddle may not be the most exciting part of the game (Wow! What an amazing huddle! I hope they replay it!), but it is the most strategic. Here’s why: 1. It’s the place where everyone can catch a breath. It is not as much of a breather as a timeout, but at least everyone can be still for a few seconds. 2. It’s the place where everyone is on your side. Nobody in your huddle is trying to knock your head off. It’s the only injury-free zone. 3. It’s the place where those on your side can encourage you. They can pull the grass out of your facemask, readjust your shoulder pads,
brush the dirt off your back, and give you the words you need to go back and do it again. 4. It’s the place where common goals are put into words. Everyone knows what play we are running next. Everyone knows what their job is, based on the play that is called. 5. It’s the place where physical, mental, and emotional energy is channeled into making the most of the moment at hand. All the strategy sessions, practice repetitions, playbook memorization, strength building, and trust in leadership results in real life execution. ov. Greg Abbott on Sept. 30 wrote a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, requesting immediate action to address “the significant increase of illegal border crossings.” Nearly 10,000 immigrant families and unaccompanied children were detained after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in August, an increase of more than 50 percent over August 2014, Abbott said, quoting official reports. Abbott mentioned the strain on state coffers and urged the immediate input of federal assistance to: • Assign 250 more U.S. Border Patrol agents to Texas; • Provide five more tethered surveillance blimps to watch for cross-border smuggling activity; • Provide a list of conditions under which individuals would be released to relatives or to private organizations in Texas communities; and • Continue supporting the working relationship of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Justice and the State of Texas in maintaining the capabilities of two detention centers in Texas.

Flu vaccinations encouraged The Texas Department of State Health Services on Sept. 30 posted a reminder that influenza vaccine is widely available now and it’s a good idea to get vaccinated. “Everyone 6 months old and older should get vaccinated. Our lives matter so much to God, that he wants us huddling regularly in preparation for real life. None of us can fulfill our purpose if we are consistently operating in “no-huddle” mode, because none of us has a purpose that is completely individual. So, huddle up this week!

Letter to the editor The legalization of gay marriage is an affront to God Dear Editor: One must ask rhetorically by simply observing what's happening to us now and in past history could very well repeat itself given the social mores in present America. The emergence of the homosexual lifestyle in our country now – the acceptance of this perversion by a plurality of the voting populace, and a lawless Supreme Court in judicious activism to overturn state laws of the Defensive of Marriage Act (DOMA) as defined by one man and one woman by our Creator, God Himself – could bring back the wrath of our Holy Father. Some 5,000 years ago, the paradigmatic instance of such aberrant behavior was found in men of a town called Sodom “who wanted their way” (homosexual relations) with two angels sent by God to warn a righteous man of God, Lot, of the impending doom that was to come in that city. Those idiots had a rude awakening and a very bad day that week.
Fast forward to the year of our Lord 2015. We have a president and his administration that have a proclivity in productive malevolent harm to a once God-centered nation. When the Supreme Court lawlessly overturned DOMA this past summer and legalized homosexual marriage, President Obama figuratively spat in God's face by shining “rainbow colors” on the White House that night. The left-leaning Democrats summarily dismiss anything that Christians put forth as farceur, when in reality, the farce is will be on them with their heathen deportment. Mr. Obama and his followers might want to pick up the Bible and read the New Testament, Romans, 1: 21-32 and see what God has to say about your lifestyles. Just as with those feckless morons in Sodom that awful day, your day of reckoning is coming soon. Yes! “History does repeats itself.” Joseph Bryan Fort Worth

A different perspective changes everything BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Anyone who has spent any time on or around Eagle Mountain Lake has gazed upon the handful of homes that sit majestically atop a cliff near the north end of the spillway – just around the point from Twin Points Resort. I’ve often wondered what lofty views could be seen from up there, and particularly what a thunderstorm or spectacular sunset might be like experienced from the top of that cliff. I still don’t know, and I may never. But I did see a couple of extraordinary things from that cliff Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23. The alarm sounded just after 1 p.m. A vacant home on Samora Court was fully engulfed in flames. My nephew, his lovely wife, three beautiful children and sweet mother-in-law live at the bottom of that cliff – I ran out of the offi ce without grabbing my “emergency bag” because I was concerned with making sure everything was okay at his home. (Thankfully, I later learned it was.) That bag contains everything a girl might need at a crime scene, accident, fi re, or photo shoot: spare camera batteries, a battery pack that recharges my iPhone and iPad, a fl ashlight, antiperspirant, hair ties and clips, and a package of Wisps – tiny little toothbrushes complete with paste. And, importantly, tennis shoes. So there I was, at the foot of Samora Court. Fire trucks were lined all the way up – and I do mean up – the street, waiting to deliver their precious cargo of water. Two fi re chiefs I know agreed that I could park near the Twin Points boat launch entrance and walk up. And I do mean up. I was wearing heels. Those who know me would agree that
I could stand to lose a few pounds – 50 would only be a great start. And at age 56... hey, I’m not exactly the poster girl for physical fitness. But I climbed that hill, in heels. Believe me, as I approached the top, I was pretty sure they’d have to load me into an ambulance for a trip to the ER. At the top, weary, sweaty fi refi ghters rested in a long-ago landscaped driveway, while a fresher crew poured water to the fl aming home, and I shot many photos as they worked. Then I noticed two Tarrant County Sheriff’s deputies over near the edge of the cliff, maybe 30 feet from where I was shooting. I was facing northwest – they were looking almost due west. Looking back at that afternoon, I’m struck with the life lesson that presented itself in such a creative way. From my fi rst perspective, all I could see was destruction in the form of fi re, fl ames so hot they chewed up the mortar that held the stone facade of the home together, and the human effort being exerted to try to defeat those flames. Still breathing raggedly from my trek up the hill, I walked the 30 feet to the edge of the cliff and shifted my gaze about 35 degrees, toward the west. A lifelong dream – one I had really given up on so long ago that I’d almost forgotten – was fulfilled in that moment. The view of the lake from atop that cliff was breathtaking in its peaceful majesty. I’m not sure the greatest of photographers (which I’m not) could capture the enormity of it, but I tried.. That I saw it with my own eyes was the real reward. Sometimes when we are facing challenges, hardships, even evil, a shift in our own perspective can change it all in a nanosecond.
The story behind the photograph
The juxtaposition of human effort and strife contrasted with a peaceful and serene view from on high struck a note with an Azle News reporter covering a structure fi re on a cliff above Eagle Mountain Lake. Photos by Carla Noah Stutsman
