Same day, same street, 3 arrests BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Three people were arrested by Parker County Sheriff’s deputies March 12 in two separate incidents. The arrests are linked by two ironic similarities – all three arrests were drug related, and all three occurred on the same Reno street. At 3:30 p.m. that afternoon, deputies arrested Gosta Daniel Olofson, 23, in the 1300 block of Arvel Circle. Olofson was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Parker County jail, where he remained in custody as of March 19 pending $5,000 bond. In a separate and unrelated incident, deputies went to a residence in the 500 block of Arvel Circle about an hour later with the objective of serving a felony warrant for violation of parole on Bryan Keith Kabrick, 50, of Springtown. As deputies were arriving, a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro was leaving the residence. The Camaro was stopped so deputies could check to see if Kabrick was inside. He wasn’t – in fact, Kabrick was trying to escape detention by running out the rear door of the house. He threw a black box over the fence around the property before deputies were able to detain him. Deputies found the box, which contained 34.2 grams of an off-white crystalline substance suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as two baggies containing 23.5 grams of marijuana. The box also held additional empty baggies and two sets of electronic scales. Meanwhile, back at the Camaro, deputies identified Karie Kay Smith, 34, of Saginaw as the driver. They located a package of “Classic Brand” cigarettes about six feet from the driver’s side of the vehicle. The cigarette package contained approximately 7.50 grams of a substance suspected to be meth. In another irony, Ms. Smith just happened to be smoking a “Classic Brand” cigarette. Disc-o fun: Local park boasts new attraction BY CHASE CARTER Springtown Park is an attraction for local residents all year long, but the newest addition of a disc golf course aims to improve that appeal even more. Disc golf combines elements of the celebrated gentleman’s game with specially made and weighted discs and baskets. Most of the rules are borrowed from traditional golf – players tee off, each hole has a par, and the majority of courses are comprised of the traditional 18 holes. The discs used even use golf nomenclature. Distance drivers, mid-range drivers, approach, and putter discs are used by discerning players to achieve optimal scores. The difference between disc golf and its classical influence is the people who play it and the manner in which it’s played. College students in particular have popularized the sport in recent years, though a wide range of ages can be found on any local course. The casual sport is not to be taken lightly, though. Official competitive play is organized through the Professional Disc Golf Association, which hosts amateur and professional tours throughout the U.S. and internationally. Springtown’s course taps into the growing sport with a full 18 holes stretching across the park. Ten baskets have been installed, with eight being played from two different approaches. Tees have not yet been installed, but City Administrator Mark Krey is working towards that end. “Based upon advice given by course designers, we have some suggested tee boxes but will wait on constructing permanent ones once the course gets played by some experienced players,” said Krey. The plan is then to use the most popular spots, based on the collected feedback, and install permanent tees there. Course markers are not installed yet, but Hole 1 is located at the Newby Pavilion.

Freak four-car accident kills Reno man Monday BY CHASE CARTER A Reno man was killed in a freak four-vehicle crash in the early morning hours of Monday, March 25. Larry Mitchell Perkins, 56, died after being struck by traffic on Highway 199 about 6:15 a.m., according to Department of Public Safety Senior Trooper Gary M. Rozzell. Perkins, driving his 2007 Ford Ranger pickup, was involved in a minor accident with a second vehicle as it tried to make a left hand turn, Rozzell said. The second vehicle, a 1999 silver Dodge Neon driven by Justin Peterson of Springtown, as well as Perkins’ vehicle came to rest in the

left lane of traffic on Highway 199. Perkins exited his disabled vehicle and was standing on the highway when his Ranger was struck from behind by a third vehicle heading westbound. The third vehicle, a Lincoln Town Car driven by Miguel Angel Ramirez of Moorehaven, Florida, hit Perkins’ Ranger, spinning it around on impact. The Ranger caught Perkins and flung him into the right lane of traffic. There, a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Freddy Rivera-Flores of Springtown, was traveling westbound on Highway 199, where it hit Perkins. Parker County Emergency Medical Services arrived shortly after. Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:41 a.m. No charges or arrests have been issued at this time.

Early voting date set for April 29

The improvements to the Tabernacle Square continue underground. Half of the storm water collection system has been installed and an inlet is being constructed on the east side of Avenue A as well as a junction box. A small amount of paving completed over the area excavated for the line installation, but none of the major paving work has begun yet on the Square itself. That is planned to start next week. Retired teacher publishes first book, available now BY CHASE CARTER Johnnie Weaver, a 73-year-old retired teacher has released her first book, Waiting for the Light, satisfying an “inkling” she has carried for years. “I wrote on and off for about a year,” said Weaver. “I’m retired so I have a lot of free time. Nothing really compelled me to start; I just decided to one day.” Weaver is part of the Azle Book Club for Writers, and members often are encouraged to write poems, short stories, autobiographies, and other pieces to help sharpen their skills and provide inspiration. It was there that she took her book for peer review. The book club helped her polish out the rough spots and provided editing for the finished manuscript, but Weaver sought out more sources of criticism. “I gave it to two or three of my friends and my younger sisters,” said Weaver. “They said it needed more romance,” She admits that she went back to rewrite sections of the book, including one 40-page chunk, but the plot came naturally. “Once I started, the characters kind of wrote themselves,” said Weaver.

Set in the 1930s, in the midst of the Depression, Waiting for the Light is a suspenseful fiction about a mother whose relationship with her son is strained by the loss of her own brother decades earlier. Emotional trauma from numerous sources leads to her being institutionalized in a mental facility with an evil doctor under hellish conditions. Weaver published the novel through Publish America, and it is now available online via Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and many other companies. She has sold copies to friends and families, and is currently looking to expand her marketing. “I’ve always wanted to write and being a teacher only helped that, but I just couldn’t ever find the time or drive,” said Weaver. “I’m glad I finally decided to.” Not slowing down, Weaver is already planning a second novel. No concrete details are available currently, but she has decided to set it during the Civil War era. Waiting for the Light has not garnered any critical reviews yet, but Weaver is eager to hear what the public has to say about her first work.

At Springtown Elementary, their fifth six-weeks’ character trait is “Caring.” During this time each year, they collect pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House. The money collected from recycling the tabs goes towards daily house operations, like laundry detergent, office supplies, and pantry items. Each student in the grade level that collected the most tabs received a Happy Meal certificate donated by the local McDonald’s. This year SES collected a total of 196,500 tabs. The winning grade level was first grade; they brought in 61,500. Woman assaulted, held for 3 days

Silver Creek Fire Department Silver Creek Fire Department personnel donned wet suits and a bit of resolve after a driver crashed his car into a stock tank and it sunk beneath the waters around midnight on March 22. Lieutenant EMT Matt Wander and other fire fighters took a small boat on to the tank in order to secure chains and winches to the submerged vehicle in an effort to drag it back to the surface. The conditions were uncomfortably wet and cold, according to Wander, but in the end they completed the job.

Lunacy? Plots for sale on the Sea of Tranquillity

avid Bowie, wellknown extra-terrestrial, once sang about “The Man Who Sold the World.” But Dennis Hope has achieved fame by selling the moon – and you can buy a chunk of it. He says lots of people are taking him up on his space oddity. In the 1980’s, Hope took advantage of a loophole in the 1967 United Nations Outer Space Treaty that said no country could own the moon – but it said nothing about individuals, so Hope laid claim to the moon. And now he’s selling plots on it. He’s made a fortune hawking oneacre lots for $19.95. (With a “lunar tax” and shipping and handling, the total is $36.60.) Multiple acres can be purchased at

a discounted rate. Someone plopped Venus, Mars, and Pluto; he’ll let that down $250,000 for 2.66 million acres. latter one go for just $250,000 for its entirety. When China was considering buildIf the moon is just too close for you, Hope also owns Jupiter, Mercury, ing a moon base, Hope warned them

to back off, that he’d not flinch at suing them: “Let’s dance.” And when another guy said he owned the sun and was going to charge Hope for the free energy he was “stealing,” Hope told the guy to just turn off the power source – he didn’t want the sun’s energy. So far, the other guy has not doused the sun. Big money could await current moon property investors – or their future generations – since Hope projects that under the lunar surface sits $6 quadrillion in helium-3 reserves. Used in nuclear fusion, it currently goes for $125,000 per ounce. Hope also was sharp enough to set aside parts of the moon as “reserves.” Places like where U.S. astronauts landed. And the polar regions where Hope said he turned down a $50 million offer to buy the moon’s north pole since

there might be water there. (And with water on the Red Planet, maybe life on Mars? More potential customers!) Hope wasn’t the first to try selling off the moon. In fact, he is under pressure and has some serious competition via the Luna Society International which claims to be the real owners of the moon. “Earth’s Leading Lunar Real Estate Agency” is letting “the beautiful southern shore” of the Sea of Tranquillity go for just $37.50 per acre. The apparently crappy Sea of Vapors can be snapped up just $18.95 per acre, but you just know it will soon be covered in spaceships up on blocks and about 100 uncaged, yapping alien dogs. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and embedded 10 Bowie songs in this column to hunt for. Happy Easter! (Answers next week.)

Senate OKs state budget, now House's turn

arch 18 was day 70, midpoint of the 140-day regular session of the 83rd Texas Legislature. On March 22, the Senate approved its version of the state budget, a plan to spend $95 billion in general state revenue in 2014 and 2015. The Senate version would spend $7 billion in general revenue more than the current 2012-2013 budget. The full budget is close to $195 billion, counting dedicated funds and federal dollars. Also on March 22, the Texas House Committee on Appropriations approved its $97 billion version of the budget — Committee Substitute Senate Bill 1. This was the last step before all 150 members of the House vote on it. CSSB1 features an additional $2.5 billion for public education on top of a base budget that already accounts for student population growth. With the clock ticking, the two chambers must agree on a single version before sending it to the governor. Assuming the House will pass its version this week or the following

ments approved by the Legislature will be on the statewide ballot. The four votes in opposition were cast by Sens. Brian Birdwell of Granbury, Craig Estes of Wichita Falls, Glenn Hegar of Katy and Tommy Williams of The Woodlands. In the Senate Journal, Williams explained his vote, this way: “I do not support term limits for statewide officers only.” Under Eltife’s measure, voters would decide whether or not to limit statewide officials to two consecutive terms, but officials could serve more terms non-consecutively and STATE currently elected officials wouldn't have terms served CAPITAL Jan. 1, 2014 count HIGHLIGHTS before against them.

week, the next step would be for a conference committee of five House members and five Senators to work out the differences. And once again, assuming common ground will be found, the agreed-upon version goes back to the full House and full Senate for a simple majority vote to accept the changes made by the conference committee.

death penalty cases. Ellis called his bill “modest but vitally important reform” and a step toward “a more fair, reliable and just criminal justice system in Texas,” and added that it will “help reduce the possibility that the ultimate mistake is made with someone receiving the ultimate penalty.” “To be certain that only guilty murderers are executed, all evidence that can be tested for DNA should be tested for DNA before the case goes to trial,” Abbott said. “This will prevent endless appeals that game the system and delay justice for the families of victims.” To avoid the imposition of an unfunded mandate on local prosecutors and law enforcement agencies, SB 1292 requires that a Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab perform the mandatory DNA test at the State’s expense, and provide the results of those tests to both the defendant and state prosecutors, according to the Office of the Attorney General.

Smitherman told lawmakers that through horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques developed by the private sector over the last few years, “the United States is awash in natural gas.” But today, Smitherman said, “anti-fossil initiatives by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are threatening the domestic development of abundant and affordable energy from coal and natural gas.” The Railroad Commission, he said, is moving toward implementing industry best practices throughout the hydraulic fracturing process, such as the first “frac” fluid disclosure requirements, updating well integrity rules and working on a rule that would encourage oil and gas operations to do more recycling. Immigration reform a hot button topic – in 1888

C

ory M. Gilley is a seventh grade Texas History teacher and a coach at Springtown Middle School. The class was hunting for articles about Texas history, when this article about immigration was discovered from the January 23, 1888 issue of the Fort Worth Daily Gazette. Trying to attract settlers to Texas was a big deal. Springtown really wanted to bring more people to our area. Remember that Indian raids had caused many people not to want to come to this part of Texas and some that came moved back to “civilization.” The last Indian raid in Parker County was in July 1874, but they continued in Wise County and Jack County until 1875. On the same page as the Springtown Immigration Society organizing were

A. Kidd was made chairman and T. M. Wadsworth, secretary. The formality of explaining the object of the meeting was gone through in as few words as possible, all seeming to know what they were there for. One of the objects was the elec-

man, and T. J. Tarkington, secretary. “The following named gentlemen were appointed a permanent working committee to write up and lay before the world the advantages which our town and country offer to parties seeking homes or investments: C. C. Culton, M. Roderick, T. M. Wadsworth, Professor D. P. Hurley, H. C. Gilliland, Professor T. L. Lane and Harry Webb. The meeting then adjourned subject to call of the chairman. “The gentlemen who write up the town of Springtown, with its beauty and healthfulness of location, the morality and refinement of its inhabitants, its educational facilities, its numerous flowing wells of pure water – none of your foul-smelling, nauseating mineral stuff – its favorable situation in the midst of the finest agricultural section of the state, will have a theme worthy

of any pen. “From letters written by an ex-sheriff of this county, now in Los Angeles, Cal., we learn that that city now contains 3,000 men out of employment and out of money, and fears of a bread riot are entertained. It is high time that this tide of immigration – which has been flowing so long to the Pacific slope – should be diverted to Texas when we have to offer not only pure air but soil of unsurpassed fertility, in the digging of which the mixer finds paying leads that are inexhaustible.” In the current day, immigration is again a hot topic. SHS clobbers Lake Worth BY MARK K. CAMPBELL It was feast or famine for the Lady Porcupine softball team. Springtown (8-18, 1-3) won its first 6-3A game in a big way, demolishing Lake Worth 24-4 while belting 16 hits. But those bats struggled in SHS’ next district game at home against Mineral Wells March 26 in a 2-1 loss. At Lake Worth March 22, the Lady Porcupines scored early and often. While the Lady Frogs were

committing 11 errors, Springtown also pounded the ball. Leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Hill went 4-for-5 with four RBI and a quartet of runs scored. Katie Crook also scored four times while collecting three hits. Winning pitcher Kelsey Huff had four ribbies and so did Mary Anne Sayles. Julia Perez plated three teammates and centerfielder Gabby Casanova scored four times with two RBI. The bats stayed hot when Mineral Wells arrived on a chilly evening – but just for one inning. Hill ripped a lead off triple to right centerfield and later scored when Kelsey Hinson singled. But other runners were stranded in that opening frame and that was the lone run for Springtown. Tennis squads rake in medals The Springtown High tennis teams are speeding toward district loaded down with medals. At a Glen Rose tournament, a slew of SHS athletes came home with hardware. Two doubles teams were champions. Winning the boys competition were Dillon Stubbs-Caleb Whiteman. Taking the gold in mixed doubles were Ginnie MerrillJoe Rodriguez. In girls doubles, Jennifer Adams-Rayanna Havens were runners-up. In girls singles play, three Lady Porcupines placed. Amanda Glover was second, Sheila Durkee finished fourth, and Meridith Petsch won consolation. For their efforts, the Lady Porcupines won the team trophy. The boys finished second overall. POJO Relays a cold meet Wow, that was one cold track meet. The annual POJO Relays just missed out on some nice weather – the middle schoolers enjoyed springtime sunshine the day before – but still things went on as planned. Several SHS athletes turned in fine performances despite the poor conditions. The boys varsity 4x400 team of Nick Keith, Javier Reynoso, Chanse Lee, and Will Sutton won the gold in 3 minutes, 27.76 seconds. Relays were Springtown’s strong suit, especially the Lady Porcupine varsity that won all three of its races. In field events, Kendyl Dean, Savannah Sutton, Kylie Hornback, Sean Wolf (twice), Gavin Edgecomb, Mason Phillips, Thrower Kolyn Waldrop won medals in the discus and and Benji Brokenshire all were shot at the POJO Relays, tossing here into the stout north wind. Lance Raines-Eddie Stanley finished third in the boys ‘B’ doubles. In girls play, Durkee won the ‘A’ singles consolation title. Amber Benton took the gold in the girls ‘B’ bracket. Two Springtown mixed doubles teams placed. Merrill-Rodriguez earned another gold, amid the ‘A’ competition. Justin Minter-Meritith Petsch finished second in ‘B’ doubles. The squads have a week to prepare for the District 6-3A varsity tournament set for Lake Worth courts on April 9. Coach Ron Elston said because of a limit on the number of district matches that can be played in one day, it’s possible that some matchups will bleed over into April 9. The JV tourney, using a shorter format, is April 9.

Baseball squad struggles with district opponent A trip to Lake Worth for some 6-3A baseball March 22 did not work out for the Porcupines. Springtown (9-8, 1-2) fell behind early and the Frogs kept adding to the tally and eventually won, 8-1. While Cole Norman ripped a double, SHS was held to six hits total. Two Porcupines had a couple of hits apiece: Andrew Brou-

hard and Garrett Mauldin. Ryan Hester got Springtown’s other safety; he also stole a base. The sloppy game was riddled with errors – the Porcupines committed six miscues. Before the Ram game, Springtown entertained Stephenville in a non-district clash. The visiting Yellow Jackets won, 5-0.

Springtown eked out one hit, a single by Mauldin. Collin Rector started and Dylan Englert also pitched. The Porcupines hosted Mineral Wells March 26, but results were not available at press time. Next up is nothing but district games. The first round of 6-3A action ends when Springtown ventures to Fort Worth to play Diamond Hill-Jarvis March 29.

Golfers visit Bridgeport links Two Springtown golf squads played at Bridgeport on March 19. The Lady Porcupines finished second at Runaway Bay Golf Course. Michaela Rodriguez led SHS

with a score of 109. Right behind was Rachel Rayford who fired a 110. Jimmie Gee (114), Kaylon Cremeen (120), and Chandler Wright (127) rounded out the SHS scoring.

The boys finished third overall. Three Porcupines shot under 100 – Dylan McCray (88), Trey Skaggs (91), and Tyler Plato (98). Dawson Hinkley (103) and Cody Croft (107) were next.

Early detection of Kawasaki disease is important to help prevent further heart damage. The standard treatment in the hospital setting is with intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) given along with high-dose aspirin. IVIG is a blood product administered by a healthcare professional that suppresses severe inflammation. Aspirin is often used as a pain reliever, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory. In addition, aspirin is sometimes used to help prevent blood clot formation by preventing platelets from sticking together.

A rare health problem called Kawasaki disease is an inflammation of blood vessels. It mostly affects children. Although the details of this condition remain unknown, it especially affects the blood vessels of the heart (coronary arteries). This can lead to artery widening (aneurysm) and more rarely, a heart attack. Male children less than five years old are the ones most frequently diagnosed with this problem. The classic presenting sign of Kawasaki disease is an unexplained fever lasting at least five days. The child’s temperature is often greater than 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Other symptoms include bloodshot eyes, red lips, red bumps in the back of the tongue, red hands and feet, swollen lymph node, and peeling of the skin in the palms and soles.

Movie Man

Thursday, March 28, 2013

Eye-popping 3-D makes The Croods the best so far Animation offers the best use of 3-D – and even then, it’s not always used to its potential. Coraline (2009, Movie Man No. 813, a 7) was the best example of it early and Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon (2010, MM #870, 7) is also one of the best. And now here’s another Dreamworks effort, The Croods. And it’s a really good 3-D movie. About the film Pixar/Disney and Dreamworks are the animation powerhouses these days. Both have hits and misses, of course – illustrating that there’s no telling what kids will latch onto. In Dreamworks’ case, for every Shrek (2001, MM #405, a 9, Best of Year), there’s a movie that misses like Flushed Away (2006). Kung Fu Panda (2008, MM #776, 6) was big, but last year’s Rise of the Guardians wasn’t the colossus hoped for; the latter’s $103 million was substantially less than it cost to make ($145 million). The same can be said for the hit Megamind (2010, MM #903, 7) and the lesser Monsters Vs. Aliens (2009, MM #816, 6). Still, not knowing whether an animated picture will catch on is never a deterrent to production. Many future Dreamworks pictures are sequels, judging from the production list that stretches for years: How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 20, 2014), Kung Fu Panda 3 (March 18, 2016), How to Train Your Dragon 3 (June 18, 2016), and, with Blue Sky Studios, Shark Tale 2 (June 28, 2019 [not a typo]). Now, that’s some serious distant planning! Like The Croods, however, Dreamworks does have some original productions coming out. Turbo (July 19, 2013) is so well thought of – a snail named Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) dreams of becoming the world’s fastest creature – that a sequel is already in the works (Turbo 2, Jan. 7, 2018). The Movie Man is interested

in seeing how Mr. Peabody & Sherman turns out. The old cartoon is beloved by Baby Boomers when it was part of the even more beloved Bullwinkle TV show of the 1960s. Mr. Peabody & Sherman is due March 7, 2014. A third original movie between the sequels (which includes The Penguins of Madagascar [March 27, 2015]) is Trolls. Another movie aimed directly at Boomers, troll dolls were goofy small plastic dolls with wild hair that sold by the millions in the early ‘60s then again peaked in later decades. With certainly gigantic merchandising hopes, Trolls arrives June 5, 2015. But, before all those movies arrive, here’s The Croods. While it’s not Shrekian in its take, it’s much better than, say, Bee Movie (2007). The plot Caveman Grug (voiced by Nicolas Cage) protects his family the only way he knows how – hiding them in a cave every nightfall. That tactic has worked since his brood is now the only remaining cavemen. But daughter Eep (Emma Stone) is a teen rebel and determined to satisfy her curiosity. One night, she sees a glow in the canyon and finds Guy

Movie Man (Ryan Reynolds), who possesses fire. He also tells her that the world is ending. Cage hates Reynolds and is convinced his family must move on only when Cage’s cave is destroyed by the tremors caused by the separating of the continents. The group – wife Ugga (Catherine Keener), son Thunk (Clark Duke), Gran (Cloris Leachman) and a crazy baby – begin a trek to a distant mountain with Reynolds leading. Reynolds’ ability to create ideas (he calls the thing in his head a “brain”) makes him the darling and savior of the group, much to Cage’s disdain. But Cage and Reynolds will have to work together to solve

hoping the ancient Leachman will die and he’s thrilled whenever an opportunity arises.) The visuals are exceptional. Once the rocky terrain is left behind, the vistas are jam-packed with colors that shame Avatar (2009, MM #856, 7) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, MM #622, 7). They are simply brilliant; the best since the greatest animated movie of all-time, Finding Nemo (2003, MM #510, 9, Best of Year). The 3-D is exceptional. The movie is bright and full of movement and the 3-D just jacks it up even more.

The rating There’s a scary giant cat and some toothy animals that might scare little kids. (Including a carnivorous flock of birds.) But, you’ll be hard pressed to find a milder PG. Summing up What a great surprise The Croods is – it’s the best movie of the year so far. While it’s no Shrek when it comes to constant laughs, The Croods is loaded with enough for every (human) family member to enjoy.

Skelly fighting his way to the top BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Chas Skelly is waiting for a telephone call to move up to the big time. Literally. And when that phone rings, Skelly, who was Azle High’s first state wrestling champion in 2003, will be ready. Skelly competes in mixed martial arts (MMA) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the top of the heap. Skelly’s manager says UFC will be contacting him soon and another level of Skelly’s career will be achieved. Currently, he fights as a featherweight at 145 pounds,

fortunate to work full-time on just getting better. “They pay me to train,” he said, adding that Marc Laimon, a former All-American, is directing him. “I’m so fortunate to have a salary so I can focus on training.” Skelly said the skills he used that won him a gold medal in Austin are invaluable in the MMA ring. Getting an opponent down on the mat is a big advantage: “I’m better on the ground thanks to my background as a wrestler. I’m a leg lock guy,” Skelly said. He recalled that his beginnings in MMA were “a struggle at first; starting out always is.” But he has beaten every foe he has faced, including his last fight in December 2012. His MMA career began in 2009 with a bang when he won all five of his matches. In 2010, an injury stopped his early efforts and a comeback in 2011 resulted in reaggravating that injury. That injury came against Daniel Pineda who broke Skelly’s foot and ripped ligaments in May of 2010. Skelly won that fight, but the road back was long. Ever anxious to return to the ring, Skelly said he hurried his rehab in 2011 and re-injured himself. “I came back too early and trained too hard, too soon,” he recalled. “That put me back in a cast and boot.” Skelly went two years without fighting. Yet, the injury was really a blessing in disguise, he said. “It was frustrating without a Being undefeated is nice, but Chas Skelly is ready to doubt,” he said. “But when someadvance to the upper tier of his profession and perform thing like that happens, you regain your focus because you realize it on the big stage. and Skelly is undefeated there at 10-0. Most of those bouts have come on a “local circuit” aka “local shows” where fighters “work your way up,” to the pro level, Skelly said. Right now between victories, Skelly continues to train fulltime in Arlington as a member of Team Takedown. And while he trains, he waits for that phone call. “They’ve [UFC] talked to my manager,” the AHS grad said. “That’s where everyone wants to be. I’m training and waiting on them.” Skelly said he knows he’s

AT HOME CHANGE

could be over any minute.” After graduation, Skelly left Azle High to compete at Missouri Baptist College in St. Louis where he was an AllAmerican. There, he defeated the Division 2 national champion twice. But dissatisfaction with the program caused him to transfer and those moves cost him eligibility. That’s when turning pro became a reality. “I felt I needed to fight because I had not accomplished what I felt I was capable of in college,” Skelly said. Once he got finally the foot healthy, Skelly went 3-0 in 2012 as he began the climb toward UFC level. Now 27, Skelly has recorded submission victories via “guillotine choke,” “knee bar,” and “rear naked choke.” He also has unanimous decisions and TKOs. In his most recent fight on Dec. 14, 2012 in the Legacy Fighting Championship 16 against Reynaldo Trujillo, the referee stopped the bout as Skelly got a TKO “from strikes.” Skelly has a pair of Bellator victories – a highly competitive MMA level. He said he has no specific rival. “It’s competition. You train hard and you hope he’s trained hard and you have a good fight. Then after, you go out and get a beer together.” Before his 2010 injury, he was in talks with UFC, Skelly said. Ironically, he now trains with Pineda, the Houstonian who injured Skelly’s foot. They travel back and forth to spar. Skelly said he will continue

Parker ACO seeks homes for donkeys, horses, sheep

Interested in owning a donkey? How about a horse? Sheep anyone? Parker County Sheriff’s Animal Control officers are seeking adequate homes for several donkeys, two horses, and some sheep. Sheriff’s Animal Control Supervisor Karen Kessler said 11 donkeys were picked up about two months ago after a concerned citizen spotted the herd strolling down Hardy Road in Whitt. Kessler said the owner of the donkeys has not been found and no one has claimed them. Each donkey is male, has been castrated, and proved negative on a Coggins test. Two of the donkeys have been fostered until a permanent home can be established for the gelded jacks. There is no application fee and the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter is waiv-

ing all adoption fees for county residents who would like to adopt one or more of the donkeys. “We are only asking for $25 for each of the donkeys to cover the costs of the Coggins testing,” Kessler said. “We just want to see them in permanent, adequate homes.” Two horses are also up for adoption at the shelter. A mare with a good disposition and an 8-month-old colt were seized from a Peaster home a week ago due to extreme neglect. Kessler said the shelter is seeking a $100 fee for the adoption of each horse to a county resident with a good home. “There are currently no serious health issues with the horses,” Kessler said adding due to the severity of the neglect, “They are in need of proper nutrition and a lot of TLC.” The shelter also seized six

The sheep are available through an online auction at www.texasauctionrealty.com. “Anyone interested in permanently adopting these animals can contact the shelter directly or come by to see them,” Kes-

sler said. Kessler also encourages all livestock owners to register their animals to help trace them to their owner should they get lost and to help avoid animals presenting road hazards should they escape. The value of Parker County Crime Stoppers is rising along with the annual statistics resulting from the organization’s success. In 2012, Crime Stoppers assisted local law enforcement agencies by receiving and forwarding tips that led to 50 arrests. Out of 166 tips received through the program hotline last year alone, 49 local cases were cleared stemming from those tips. Those same tips were turned over to local law enforcement agencies and led to the capture of 19 fugitives.
