SISD shares school closure procedures Bad weather make-up dates uncertain BY NATALIE GENTRY With the ice storm fi nally behind us and the Springtown Independent School District (SISD) considering how to address the lost days, many people have begun to wonder about what goes into the decision to alter or cancel school due to inclement weather and what will be done about the days already missed. Communications The rumor that the decision to cancel school is made based on a coin toss or the roll of a dice simply isn’t true... although that would probably reduce the stress the decision brings. Multiple SISD administrators, including transportation director Shane Strickland and superintendent Mike Kelley, are involved in weighing in on whether or not to cancel school. The hours leading up to a signifi cant weather event fi nds the administrators glued to computers, televisions and smartphones to monitor hour-by-hour updates about anything that might lead to hazardous road conditions. “If the news stations present information that makes the decision an obvious one, we all get to stay in the comfort of our own home and call in a delay or cancellation,” Kelley said. “However, the most recent weather event warranted that we actually get out and drive many miles on our bus routes to evaluate the local conditions in our district.” There are areas in the western and northwestern portions of the district that administrators know are more treacherous than others, so they inspect those areas first. “Many of our area superintendents and transportation directors are in frequent communication with one another during the hours leading up to and even during a weather event,” Kelley said “A ‘rolling’ group text message allows us to get updates from districts with whom we share a border, and the feedback about road conditions is very helpful.” Considerations As the local team determines whether to cancel, delay, or proceed as normal, they consider a number of factors.
The safety of the students is the number one priority. While icy or snow-covered roads are the fi rst thing most people think of when considering whether or not to cancel school, the roads with heavy traffi c are seldom a good indicator of what kinds of conditions route drivers may encounter, Kelley said. Many of Springtown’s rural areas are very shaded, even in the winter, and ice and snow are very slow to melt in those places. In addition, some secondary roads have almost no shoulder area to speak of. Navigating those roads in the early morning darkness, on what might be black ice, is a real challenge. In response, a decision to delay is often due to a desire for additional light in addition to more warmth and melt. “We recently experienced ‘ice fog’ for the fi rst time that I can remember,” said Kelley. “Visibility is certainly a factor in our decision-making.” Another consideration the SISD administrators take into account is the condition of the campuses’ parking lots and sidewalks. “The most recent ‘ice-pocolypse’ allowed time for our maintenance crew to remove ice and snow from most of the ‘common areas’ on our campuses.” Kelley explained. “Had the inclement weather been a one-day event, we might have had to postpone or delay due solely to hazardous conditions on the campuses as the ‘clean up’ takes considerable time.” One of the worst things that can happen is for a weather event to occur while the students are already at school. “I remember being in a meeting with several other principals and looking out the window wondering what our superintendent might decide,” Kelley recalled. “I wasn’t at all envious of her position…the forecast had not included a warning for snow so early in the day, but she made the right call.” The bus drivers were called back to work, parents were notifi ed of an early dismissal and students were sent home well before the normal release time. While there were a few buses that

Home leveled by gas explosion Owner, feared lost, returned from shopping to find house gone BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN Barbara Pickard is lucky to be alive. The Azle woman, who lived in the 6500 block of Appian Way, is known in the neighborhood for her love of animals. And neighbors were sure on Tuesday evening that if her vehicle was parked at her home, she was there. Fortunately, that was not the case. Let’s get ready to ruuuuuuuumble! TRC to hold earthquake Town Hall meeting in Azle BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN If you’ve been wanting to publicly express your opinion on the recent spate of earthquakes around here then you’re in luck. Texas Railroad Commissioner David Porter has responded to Azle Mayor Alan Brundrett’s request for a formal investigation into the cause of a series of a swarm of earthquakes that began occurring in the Azle, Reno and Springtown areas Nov. 5. Porter contacted Brundrett Tuesday to set up a Town Hall meeting in Azle. At that meeting, Porter will listen to resident’s concerns and outline what he plans to do as Texas Railroad Commissioner. Other state and local offi cials will be in attendance. The Town Hall meeting hosted by Porter is slated for Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at the Azle High School auditorium and is free to attend. The TRC is comprised of Chairman Barry T. Smitherman, Commissioner Porter and Commissioner Christi
Craddick, along with a staff of 20. The Commission regulates the oil and gas industry, gas utilities, pipeline safety, safety in the liquefi ed petroleum gas industry, and surface coal and uranium mining in the state of Texas. And whether it’s true or not, there’s a widely-held belief that the area earthquakes are somehow related to the oil and gas industry. Some blame fracking, but there’s more evidence to suggest the cause may actually be the disposal of saltwater from the fracking process into injection wells. That’s where the TRC comes in. Brundrett said that although Porter indicated he was responding to the request for a formal investigation into the earthquakes, such an investigation was not further discussed in the conversation. Anyone who wants information or has questions about the earthquakes is encouraged to attend this Town Hall meeting.

Grocery donations contributes to N2N Christmas food drive BY NATALIE GENTRY Neighbor to Neighbors Food Pantry in Springtown received a $4,000 donation of food, coupons and gift cards from Brookshire’s of Springtown on Dec. 20. “This is a great Christmas gift to us,” said Don Hammett, a volunteer with Neighbor to Neighbors. “Brookshire’s does this every year and it lets us help so many people.” The food pantry is currently in the middle of its winter food drive and will always gladly accept donations in the
form of food, cash and clothing. They cannot legally accept mattresses or couches, and must actually pay to have such items hauled away. “Tomorrow [Dec. 21] we’ll have two or three hundred cars here,” Hammett said. “This donation will help so much.” Neighbor to Neighbors distributes approximately 3,600 pounds of food monthly to Springtown families who need assistance.

couldn’t complete routes, and a few students’ parents couldn’t make it to school, there were several administrators with four-wheel drive vehicles who were ultimately able to transport students home before the snow was too deep. Decisions “The decision is generally a pretty easy one,” Kelley said. “Sometimes conditions
are right on the cusp of ‘do or don’t,’ and I get criticized for making what some decide was the wrong call.” “I certainly don’t want to trade what might be a beautiful spring day off for a cold, wet, winter day,” he continued. “But I can’t jeopardize the safety of our students or staff for that exchange, either.” Not only is the district running buses before and after school, but they are also filling

Play group’s 2014 schedule set Following the seasonal A Tuna Christmas, the Azle Arts Association’s Popcorn Players have announced the lineup of productions for 2014. The Players have performed a variety of productions over the years like melodramas, comedies, musicals, and dramas. The wide selection of shows the Players produce appeal to a broad audience and ensure there will be something for everyone to enjoy. Here’s the 2014 lineup: • Rex’s Exes by Jones, Hope & Wooten; directed by Monica Goth. Show dates: Jan. 31, Feb. 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9. • Opal is a Diamond by John Patrick; directed by Monica Goth. Show dates: March 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30. • The Popcorn Players’ Kernel Kids Return in: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court by Mark Twain; directed by Carol Braden and Monica Goth. Show dates: April 25, 26, 27 and May 2, 3, 4.
May 19 will now be included as instructional days with both staff and students required to attend. Missing four days due to inclement weather this early in the season is unusual. It is possible that more days could be added to this list in January and February. The district plans to file a waiver with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to regain credit for the additional missed days without having to contin-
ue classes into June. TEA Region XI has advised the district to wait until early spring to submit the waiver application. This delay will prevent the district from having to possibly apply for an additional waiver if more bad weather forces the district to close again. If the waiver is approved, the district will then have to consider how to address employee compensation for the days missed.

Hoops ladies winning streak ends; holiday schedule altered
by MArK K. cAMPbeLL Bowie ended the basketball Lady Porcupines’ six-game winning streak, 55-37 Dec. 17. Springtown (6-6) was led by 11 points from Katelynn Mainord Brooklyn Dauenhauer went 6-for-6 from the free throw line and finished with 8 points; also scoring 8 was Abbi Hatton. Ashley Mainord, who grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds, scored 3 points. Freshman Adrienne Easter also tallied 3. Hatton snatched 10 boards and blocked 2 shots as did A. Mainord. Kendyl Dean and Dauenhauer were tops with 4 assists apiece. Springtown’s planned trip to a tournament at Fort Worth Nolan has been canceled, SHS coach Susan Croft said. In its place, the Lady Porcupines will play two non-district road games. On Dec. 27, Springtown will head to 4A Fort Worth Arlington Heights with the frosh playing at noon, the JV at 1 p.m., and the varsity 2:30. Three days later, SHS ventures to FW Trimble Tech for 4:30 games for the ninth and JV and a 6 p.m. varsity start. District games begin as the New Year does. Kennedale will come to the friendly confines of the Springtown gym Jan. 3 to kick off 6-3A action. Home and away games alternate the entire district slate; Lady Porcupine Kendyl Dean maneuvers past an opponent. Springtown will open the Lady Porcupines play at SHS’ Katelynn Mainord puts up a shot. Porcupines begin 6-3A slate Jan. 10 At home against longtime foe Lake Worth The Porcupine basketball team lost to No. 16 Decatur, 77-40 on Dec. 17. Springtown (3-8) was led by 14 points from Dawson Meek – one of three SHS athletes to reach double digits. Caleb Brown added 11 and Dylan Ray scored 10 points. Springtown struggled to score, going 0-for-6 from beyond the arc and just 6-of-15 from the free throw line. Meek’s 7 rebounds was tops for SHS. Zack Burton grabbed 5 and Caleb Whiteman 4 boards. The former stole a pair of Eagle balls. Kruz Dominguez, Meek, and Jared Green and the Porcupines will play at a Sanger tournament Jan. 2-4. Photo by Mark K. Campbell Brown each blocked a Decatur

shot. Unlike the Lady Porcupines who begin district immediately upon returning for the New Year, the boys do not start for another week. The December ice storm allowed coach James Rike to rejigger the schedule. Springtown will now host Poolville Dec. 28. Then, on Jan. 2-4, the Porcupines will travel to Sanger for a tournament. District 6-3A action begins Jan. 10 at home against Lake Worth. The monster in the district is Kennedale, currently undefeated and ranked No. 2 in 3A After a successful football season, Dillon Springfield is now on the SHS hardwood. Photo by Mark K. Recalling the Ghosts of Christmas Presents Past
B
ack in the old days, you actually bought people Christmas presents. A gift card is as lazy as “wrapping” a present by tossing it into a bag. (Having said all that, I’m fine with gift cards in my old age; however, even today I never choose a bagged present at a gift exchange. Surprises are supposed to be unwrapped.) With the current gift card frenzy, it’s very easy and tempting to snatch up a Starbucks/Red Lobster/iTunes card at a grocery store register and – voila! – a major chunk of your Christmas shopping is done. (One reason why we might not have given gift cards much back in the pri-

family. You’d be surprised at the kind of clout a retail stock boy can wield when it’s Dec. 23 and the final box of dolls was just pulling in. Still, I scored a couple of Cabbage Patches for my six and four year olds while many grown adults, thwarted, frantically rushed away, heading off to the next store that was rumored – in those pre-cellphone days – to be getting a shipment. (Today, I think those beloved dolls are in some box out in our remote workshop, somewhere – patiently waiting for the pendulum to swing and for Cabbage Patches to come back in style once more.) In later years, we fought for Pound
Puppies – that was 1986 and they were surprisingly hard to find – then came the Nintendo Wars which erupted a second time when Nintendo 64s arrived. We spent years buying the hot Christmas gifts which now are quaint memories. Remember Rollerblades? Walkman CD players? Pagers? Rubik’s cubes? Now grandkids are around; it took a while but I finally found a Zhu Zhu Pet a couple of Christmases ago. So I didn’t have to give a four year old a gift card in a bag. Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editorand bought some Frozen dolls early this year.

aul Gallico gives us part of a story told to him by his great grandmother about a couple and their infant son who had been captured by Indians and were being taken north. Quanta-waneh was the chief of this band of Indians. Jasper Adams was nearly beaten to death. “The taking of hostages was part of Indian warfare as well as the white man’s. If and when they became a nuisance or a menace to the safety of an operation they were simply slain out of hand as a matter of military necessity. He would do what was needed. “The way darkened as they passed beneath a canopy of giant oaks and conifers that shut out the light from both the moon and the stars. The sobbing of the woman and the whistling breath of the stricken man reached Quanta’s ears and brought him to the verge of a
decision when they reached an opening in the forest, a kind of circular glade made by some ancient vagary of the wind strewing the acorns so that the trees grew in a circle open to the sky. “Into this glade the moonlight shone and, ringed by the dark shadowy forest, illuminated it like an amphitheater. The shaft, as though streaming from an opening in heaven itself, revealed the most extraordinary sight. “Three white-tailed deer knelt in the snow; a buck, his noble antlers not yet shed, his doe and her fawn, as motionless as statues, their gentle faces turned towards the east. “Quanta heard the swift rustle at his side that told him his lieutenant had plucked an arrow from his quiver, notched it to the bow-string and drawn it to his ear, for here was meat. Yet he held up his arm in warning, came to a halt and whispered, ‘Stay your hand.
For such a thing as this I have never seen before.’ “Nor had any of the others and for once the Indians were surprised out of their habitual silence HISTORICAL as a murmur astonishHIGHLIGHTS of ment rippled Laurie Moseley through their ranks and the bowman lowered his weapon muttering. ‘Look, they do not move. And the fawn, it was born out of season. Is this a magic?’ “Yet even more astonishing was the fact that as the party formed a semicircle at the edge of the clearing, the

beasts did not take fright but remained motionless in the attitude in which they had been discovered, hind legs erect, their forelegs folded beneath them, all three alike, and in the strange attitude casting a purple shadow upon the snow, their moist muzzles and liquid eyes reflecting moonlight. “The surprise rustled from the leaders down through the ranks of the Indians and still within sight, sound and scent of the presence of man the three beasts remained immovable and undisturbed as though under some kind of spell of devotion. “Now to Jasper Adams it appeared that beyond the mysterious and unfrightened deer, beneath the branches of a great oak, he saw a glowing and at the center of it there was a primitive cradle such as the one he had constructed for Asher to sleep in at home. In it lay a swaddled infant and the glowing that surrounded it came nei-

On earth peace, goodwill toward men.’ “Then he likewise knelt in the snow crying to his wife, ‘Ah, Dorcas! Kneel thou too! For it is midnight of the eve of Christmas when Jesus was born and the beasts of burden and the wild things of the field and forest bend the knee to worship and adore Him and are given the power of speech to pray.’ “Jasper shared the Christmas story, and the Indian chief ordered that they be released.” Laurie Moseley is an author, archeologist and historian who lives in Springtown. Movie Man
Thursday, December 26, 2013
This just in: 2nd Anchorman painfully unfunny Comments from Will Ferrell pictures are not alone in inserting themselves into the Movie Man family. Like with many other fi lms, Movie Family picks up comic sayings and they become part of the Family’s historical record. About the film That’s happened twice with Ferrell. No one can go swimming anymore with Movie Family and not hear “Cannonball!” from the fi rstAnchorman picture (2004, Movie Man No. 568, 5). An even more repeated line from a Ferrell movie is “Did you hear that?!” from Elf (2003, MM #534, 7) said after a very long, soft drink-induced burp. It’s too early to tell if this latter, lesser edition of Ferrell’s Ron Burgandy and his pals adventures will inspire anything else in the general or Movie Family vernacular. From the Movie Man’s fi rst look at Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, that’s not likely since nothing really stood out. One thing about Ferrell: He’s not shy. He promoted Anchroman 2 incessantly, even taking part in “real” newscasts. He surely knows the allure of the Anchormans and, for some reason, the woeful Step Brothers (2008; the Movie Man passed on it, choosing instead that late July 2008 X-Files 2: I Want to Believe [MM #783, 5]). Ferrell’s Anchormans are silly-dumb. Now, there’s funnysilly-dumb and just silly-dumb. Great examples of the former are the Naked Gun movies. Superbad (2007, MM #732, 2) is a classic case of silly-dumb which equals unfunny. The plot Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) and wife Veronica (Christina Applegate) think they are about to hit the big time by co-anchoring the local evening news. But boss Harken (Harrison Ford, one of several stars with cam-
eos) picks only Applegate. That breaks up Ferrell’s marriage. A stint at SeaWorld goes poorly. However, he’s approached and offered a job in the new fi eld of 24-hour cable news. Accepting, he rounds up his previous team: reporter Brian (Paul Rudd), weatherman Brick (Steve Carell), and sportscaster Champ (David Koechner). They head from San Diego to New York to begin the broadcasts only to discover they’ve been relegated to the graveyard shift of 3-5 a.m. The primo prime time spot went to Lime (James Marsden). Ferrell’s crew breaks the rules by veering away from hard news and issuing pap – animal stories, entertainment fl uff, and car chases. They become a huge success, much to the surprise then delight of boss Linda (Meagan Good). Eventually, Ferrell and his boys fall out; plus he can’t fi nd time for his son. And, oh yeah, he also goes blind. Later, Marsden’s crew ambushes Ferrell, ready for a fi ght. Rudd, Carell, and Koechner show up. But so do news teams from Canada, the BBC, MTV, ESPN, and, confusingly, the History Channel, armed with a Minotaur and the ghost of Stonewall Jackson (John C. Reilly). A battle royale begins as Fer-

Summing up Perhaps Anchorman 2 would be more enjoyable if seen with a crowd. (It actually makes a social comment on the recent dumbing down of news reporting, but frat boys won’t care about that.) The small group with the Movie Man didn’t laugh eight times. Supposedly, enough adlib footage was shot to make more Burgandy movies. Hopefully, a DVD release will make the movie more fun – ‘cause it ain’t very funny right now.
What doesn’t work A big part of Anchorman 2 are non sequiturs – things said that make no sense and are supposed to be funny because they come out of nowhere. Almost none of them are humorous. There’s a painfully unfunny scene where Ferrell can’t help saying the word “black” to the Next up African-American Good. (It’s Saving Mr. Banks – and the a rip-off of Austin Powers in Best and Worst of 2013. Goldmember’s “mole” joke which is a hundred times funnier when done by Mike Myers and Fred Savage.) Kristin Wiig arrives as a love interest, but she’s totally wasted. Her lines are stupid, not funny. SERVING FOOD, BEER & WINE And that happens time and again with so many characters. al burkett, of azle, wrote a song celebrating a community Christmas tradition in his old stomping grounds of Demopolis, alabama. Photo by Natalie Gentry
Azle man pens Alabama Christmas on the River song by NataLIe GeNtry The 1950’s was a time of introductions for current Azle resident Al Burkett. The songwriter lived in De mopolis, Alabama then and he was introduced to his son’s mother as well as the local holiday festival, Christmas on the River (COTR). “I’ve been around Demopo lis almost all of my life and my son still lives there,” Burkett said. “A couple years ago we went to Christmas on the River and it was wonderful.”
According to the Demopolis Chamber of Commerce web site, over 40,000 people vis ited the town during COTR last year. In fact, the festival has been featured on HGTV and the Food Network. “It never dawned on me to write a song about COTR,” Burkett said. “Then I kept thinking ‘Why not?’” Once the decision had been made the work began. “I spent hours and hours re searching the event,” Burkett explained. “I wanted to get it
right.” According to A&E TV, De mopolis is the fifth ranked ultimate holiday town in the U.S. because of COTR. The week-long event begins with the lighting of the love trees at the local hospital and progresses with evenings de voted to events like a live nativity, a tour of antebellum homes, the Alabama State Champion ship BBQ cook-off, an arts and crafts show, parades, and fireworks. The festival culminates with the COTR dance.
Many of these events are mentioned in the song. “I try to write songs about real things,” Burkett said. “This song is about a town celebrat ing Christmas in a way that also helps local children.” COTR began in 1972 when two men, Nem Webb and Barry Collins, organized the festival to help raise money for a child from the community who had a disability or rare illness. “It is so wonderful that ev eryone in the town comes to gether for this,” Burkett said. “I just knew I needed to write
Merry Christmas!
about it. “I got into songwriting as a type of therapy, he explained. “I was going through some hard times, and just wrote it down. “Now it is really important that I feel about whatever I’m writing,” he continued. “And if you can’t feel about helping children and Christmas – well, you’ve got a problem.” The song is a fast tempo tune sung by artist country Lou Watson in the vein of Merle Hag -
gard. “I love the songs with the old country flavor,” Burkett said. “Since I wrote this song I’ve made a lot of good contacts,” he said. “I’ve had about seven other cities – including the ski resort village of Angel Fire in New Mexico – contact me about writing songs for them. “This has been so wonder ful; I just can’t thank everyone enough who has helped me out.”

by nataliE GEntry You can be a last-minute Christmas hero. As the holiday draws near, many people are searching for ways to reach out to children in need in an effort to make this time of year a little brighter. The City of Reno Christmas Angel Tree is one great way to help. There are nine Angels on the tree who still need to be adopted. Anyone interested in sponsoring an angel may do so at City Hall during regular busi-
ness hours. In addition to the Angel Tree, the city will provide the families most in need with a Christmas dinner, as well as essential outer clothing and a gift for the children. There are 14 families who need help this year. A $50 donation provides a whole family with a dinner, but donations of any size are truly appreciated. To help these families, contact Scott Passmore, Director of Public Works, at 817-221-2500 extension 24.
