Stream Channel Stabilization POLLUTANTS ADDRESSED: Sediments

DESCRIPTION: Stream channel stabilization is the reconstruction or restoration of a reach of stream. It may involve channel realignment, grade control, and the use of bank stabilization structures.

LOAD REDUCTION MECHANISM: Sediment Reduction – Bank stabilization, grade control, and or channel realignment reduce the amount of sediment that is transported into adjacent streams.

PERMITTING REQUIREMENTS: Permits are always required under Sections 404 and 401 of the Clean Water Act. Contact county regional flood control district

PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION: Stream channels and their processes are complex and dynamic. As a result, restoration of stable dimension, pattern, and profile to a stream channel is a highly technical undertaking. It should only be undertaken with qualified technical assistance.

This practice potentially includes realignment of stream channels as well as widening floodplains, and stabilizing grade. However, stream adjustment to inadequate designs can create greater impacts than the original condition.
