PARTNERS: AZTI (Spain), Institut für Lebensmittel und Umweltforschung e.V. – ILU (Germany), Centro para a Valorização de Resíduos – CVR (Portugal), Centro de Estudios en Alimentos Procesados - CEAP (Chile), Instituto Nacional de Investigación Agropecuaria – INIA (Uruguay), Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Industrial – INTI (Argentina).
PROJECT COORDINATOR: AZTI (Spain), Contact Person: Carlos Bald Welcome to this second edition of SUMO Newsletter, the voice of SUMO, a project financed and supported by the ERANet-Lac programme. The Newsletter has been specifically designed to disseminate the results of the project to all stakeholders interested in developing valorization routes for a more sustainable use of the main oily seeds processing bypro-
ducts, as well as general public seeking information about our project activities. You can find additional information on our webpage http://www.sumo-project.eu. We will appreciate any feedback or any type of suggestion and comments, as well as any contributions to future Newsletters
WORK PACKAGES IN PROGRESS:
On the 17th and 18th of October 2016 took place the Coordination and Progress meeting of the SUMO Project in AZTI´s premises located in Bizkaia Technology Park. During the two days of the meeting, the partners had the opportunity to discuss the current state of development of the SUMO Project. They also defined the planning and organization of the activities programmed for 2017. In total, 11 people from Europe and Latin America representing the 6 partners of the Consortium, joined together to discuss the advances of the project.

CURRENT STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT
WP2. Development of valorization approaches WP2 began in February 2016 and is focused on the development and demonstration of several valorization technologies, as well as the characterization of the obtained products in order to obtain valuable information about the technical feasibility of the proposed bio-refinery processes. This information will be used as a base for the further definition of the Case Studies in each of the regions and the economic and environmental assessments.
Additionally, many actions have already been undertaken to promote collaboration between the partners through the exchange of experiences and knowledge, as well as coordinating the exchange of samples of by-products and secondary products of the valorization tests to be evaluated as feeding materials in complementary valorization routes or in food, feed and cosmetic applications.
The main activities during this first period have been: • Collection and analytical characterization of materials. • Preliminary valorization tests. • Products characterization.
WP3. Valorization proposals definition and feasibility studies A series of Case studies will be undertaken by each partner, which will consist of a theoretical study for the application of a proposed solution in a particular case based in real data. Several scenarios will be considered (waste collection, production, different technologies, etc.), depending on the information gathered by each partner. For each Case study the economic feasibility and environmental impact of the proposed solution will be evaluated. The environmental impact assessment will be based on LCA methodology. Some aspects will also be
considered, such as: the seasonality, the volume and capacity, the required equipment and infrastructure, the technical conditions, and the feasibility or mass balance of the process. ► The partners of the consortium are searching for companies willing to participate in the case studies. If you are really interested, you are kindly requested to contact SUMO´s project coordinator (Carlos Bald, PhD. E-mail: cbald[at]azti.es).
WP4. Communication and Dissemination activities
• Regional Workshops: Each partner will be responsible for organizing at least one workshop. It will be used to disseminate the results of the project.
will be invited to attend the workshops. Other stakeholders to be welcome would include: researchers working in similar projects, public administrators, regulators, equipment suppliers, and other social organizations. The workshops will be a technology & innovation showcase as well as a discussion forum, to talk about possible economic and environmentally friendly valorization solutions for oilseeds processing by-products. It will also be a good opportunity for networking and establishing close relationships with producers and companies.
The Workshops will be an excellent opportunity to disseminate the project´s results. They will be held in specific events (such as congresses and/or conferences) related to the theme of the project. Some key stakeholders, such as agricultural producers, companies and business & professional associations,
► If you are really interested in attending any of the workshops, you are kindly requested to contact SUMO´s project coordinator (Carlos Bald, PhD. Email: cbald[at]azti.es). We will keep you informed about the programmed workshops.
Some key dissemination activities are programmed in 2017: • Technical and Scientific dissemination actions: - Oral & Poster presentations in seminars and conferences - Technical articles published in specialized magazines

NEWS FROM THE PARTNERS CEAP: demonstration activity shows the potential of alperujo (wet olive pomace) valorization to recover valuable compounds and microalgae production. On November 22nd, 2016, the Center for Studies in Processed Foods (CEAP) carried out a demonstration activity, addressed to companies and governmental institutions, which aimed to show in a practical way the learning obtained from initiatives that have linked the scientific research with the productive sector, in the area of recovery of high value compounds in the olive sector. During the demonstration activity, it was showed the work done for the recovery of hydroxytyrosol and the production of microalgae from the processing of alperujo.

CVR: SUMO presented at the Value Portugal launching event The SUMO project was presented during “The Value Portugal“ project launching event in CVR’s facilities on September 23rd, 2016. This project aims at capturing and disseminating information relevant to the qualification of the business strategies of SMEs operating in the Portuguese Waste Sector. The dissemination of SUMO was made throughout an oral presentation made by André Ribeiro that focused on the project main objectives and milestones, and provided an overall perspective of the work made at that stage. Dissemination of SUMO project in CVR´s facilities
ILU: Dissemination activities in Germany The international “Global Forum for Food and Agriculture” took place in Berlin on 19-21 January, 2017. The ILU participated in a specialist panel, the EU High Level Panel and the Co-operation Exchange. The co-operation exchange offered the opportunity to get in touch with representatives of other companies and institutes about the SUMO project and to inform about the planned workshop in March. On January 22nd 2017, ILU attended the “82nd International Green Week Berlin – the International Exhibition on Nutrition, Agriculture and Horticulture” - to meet members of the “Federal Association of Decentralized Oil Mills and Vegetable Oil Technology e.V.” and other stakeholders, to inform them about the SUMO project and to prepare the Workshop in March.

INIA: Poster Symposium Uruguayan researchers from INIA and the Faculty of Agronomy (UdelaR) were present at the VIII International Olive Symposium held in Croatia from 10 to 14 October 2016 thanks to the support of the Uruguayan Olive Association (ASOLUR). The Uruguayan participants won the best poster award presented by undergraduate and graduate students. The poster entitled “Olive oil quality of ‘Arbequina’ and ‘Coratina’ cultivars produced in Uruguay”, summarizes the study of oil quality carried out in the phenology trials carried out at the Nueva Manantial Plant, in Treinta y Tres, in the Project framework CSIC_ Productive Sector (FAGRO_INIA_AGROLAND): “Competitiveness of olive cultivation, economic and technological analysis”, (1/2015-12/2017).
