PROJECT COORDINATOR: AZTI (Spain), Contact Person: Carlos Bald SUMO PROJECT FINAL MEETING Last October 26th the final meeting of SUMO project took place. After two years of intense work, the SUMO Project came to an end. The meeting was held at the facilities of INIA Las Brujas located in the Rincón del Colorado (Uruguay). During the last meeting, a review of the activities carried out up to date as well as the analysis of main activities still pending until the completion of the project were made. Other actions scheduled after the end of the project, such as the publication of a joint technical article, were discussed. The partners would especially like thank INIA for the organization of the event and for the attention and support provided. We will surely come back!.

WORKSHOPS The different Workshops organized in the framework of SUMO project attracted over 200 attendants. The main goal of the Workshops was to disseminate the advances and main results of the project amongst producers, companies, and scientific and governmental representatives. The variety of participants made it a valuable networking opportunity to disseminate the project results. The lecturers made presentations showing the latest advances in the valorization of olive and rapeseed oil by products.

The specific objectives were: • To disseminate SUMO results to interested entities. • To take advantage of sectorial and scientific events to present the workshops increasing the number of attendees and the impact. • To strengthen cooperation between partners in the framework of SUMO project and for future projects. • To create links between producers and other players along the R&D value chain.

The June Newsletter described two WSs organized by ILU and AZTI. During the second half of 2017, four Workshops took place:

CEAP WORKSHOP The Workshop “Technological alternatives for the valorization of alperujo” was held in Talca (Chile) on October 20th. The meeting was attended by regional oil mills, representatives of the Maule regional government, academics from regional universities, and representatives of ChileOliva. Oscar Candia from CEAP, exposed the possible alternatives for treatment of the processing waters of the olive oil mills through the use of microalgae culture, relating the opportunities that this treatment would have in the olive agroindustry. Another presentation was about the results of a study, led by the exhibitor Asami Tan Vásquez, for energy recovery through anaerobic digestion of alperujo. On the other hand, Julianna Bruzonne of INIA Uruguay, one of the partners of SUMO´s consortium, showed the results of the study of composting and pyrolysis as a possible strategy for use in the Uruguayan industry. Finally, Dr. Patricia Gómez, from Ficolab, who has extensive experience in studies on microalgae,

spoke about the use of microalgae as a biotechnological alternative for sustainable use of the biomass generated. Please click here to access the program.

INTI WORKSHOP To give framework to the presentation of results of the ERANET project, INTI organized in San Juan (Argentina) a set of activities called Month of the valuation of olive oil production by-products in October 2017. The activities included three major events: “Week of work on the production of balanced feed from residues of the olive oil industry and fruit and vegetable activity” (16-20 October); a Seminary called “Innovation for the reduction of food waste” (19 October); and the SUMO Workshop (23 October). The SUMO project´s Workshop was attended by members of the SUMO consortium from Spain, Chile and Uruguay. There were also representatives of more than ten companies, consultants, researchers from the Catholic University of Cuyo, the National University of San Juan and its research institutes and INTA, as well as technical staff of the Municipality of Albardón.

Taking advantage of the presence of AZTI researchers, INTI organized two visits, one of them to the sensorial analysis laboratory of olive oil at the Catholic University of Cuyo and another to an important olive oil mill in the province. Please click here to access the program and presentations

INIA WORKSHOP Last October 25th, INIA Las Brujas (Uruguay) organized one day to show the latest advances in experimental research regarding olive oil production. Approximately 35 participants involved in the olive sector, attended the Workshop, including olive growers, oil harvesters, students, researchers, and representatives of public institutions.

and industries; polyphenol extraction and biogas production; the use of alperujo for composting and pyrolysis; production of microalgae based on the fermentation of alperujo; and gasification. Please click here to access the program and presentations

In the morning, the presentations covered the phenological stages, yield, oil quality behavior, and disease susceptibility and performance of more than 20 cultivars. In the afternoon, during the second half of the seminar, the SUMO project Workshop “Valorization of alperujo” took place. Different speakers from Latin America and Europe presented the main results of the SUMO project and the possible alternatives that allow the valorization of by-products derived from the olive oil production. The presentations included some potential applications from olive oli by-products, such as: the production of briquettes to be used as fuel at homes

CVR WORKSHOP CVR organized a workshop for dissemination of SUMO project in their facilities in Guimaraes, Portugal. The workshop “Valorization of by-products of the oil sector” was focused on the presentation of the SUMO results. The event was attended by 32 persons from private companies. In total there were seven presentations made by SUMO partners from Portugal, Spain, Chile and Uruguay. The lectures were about different potential applications from olive oil by-products valorization, such as energy, polyphenols, biogas, compost and microalgae. CASE STUDIES Technical obtained results have been used as a base for the performance of 6 detailed Case Studies in each of the participant countries. The Case Study is the practical application, in a real case, of the discoveries and developments carried out by each of the SUMO partners throughout the project. Each one of the members of the consortium have chosen a company or other institution (agricultural producer, cooperative, association, foundation) to make the valorization analysis of

the by-products derived from olive or rapeseed oil production. These Case Studies have included the Technical, Economic and Environmental feasibility assessment of 6 proposed valorization routes. Results and conclusions with the critical feasibility factors, will be recorded in a common technical publication in order to serve as a guide for the valorization of their oleaginous wastes to the rapeseed and olive oil producers sector.

SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIOMASS FROM OLEAGINOUS PROCESSING

Newsletter - December 2017

MAIN PROJECT RESULTS Over the past two years, the partners of the SUMO project consortium have been working on the search for new feasibility alternatives to reduce the environmental impact and promote the economic valorization of byproducts from olive and rapeseed oil production. Each partner has contributed their knowledge (know-how) and professional experience to look for innovative solutions to the problem generated by the accumulation of waste from a key sector of the agricultural economy (oilseed processing) in six European and Latin American countries. The project has made it possible to obtain a good number of new protocols and product prototypes in TRL6 with potential applications in various economic sectors (energy, agriculture, human and animal food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic). The intention is that this knowledge would be transferred to companies and producers for their subsequent practical application and arrival on the market.
