SUSTAINABLE USE OF BIOMASS FROM OLEAGINOUS PROCESSING
Newsletter - June 2017
WP2. Development of valorization approaches WP2 began in February 2016 and it will be finished in the coming weeks. Several valorization tests have been applied, with process optimization and scaling-up for each valorization protocol. Various valuable products with different potential market applications have been obtained.
As a result of the experiments carried out throughout the project, each of the partners will define the valuation protocols to obtain the following products: polyphenols and biogas (AZTI); polyphenols and lipids (ILU); compost and biochar (INIA); microalgae biomass and biobutanol (CEAP); syngas, compost and densification (CVR); silage and densification (INTI).
WP3. Valorization proposals definition and feasibility studies Each of the SUMO partners has sought a company in which to implement the protocols and technologies developed in WP2. A Case Study template has been proposed which includes an economic and environmental analysis. Data of the companies will be collected in an initial phase. Subsequently,
some simulations will be carried out, in which the knowledge generated along the project will be applied. The expected result is a preliminary evaluation of the technical, economic and environmental feasibility of the proposed valorization routes based in a real scenario.
WP4. Communication and Dissemination activities Several WORKSHOPS have been programmed to disseminate SUMO´s project activities and main results throughout the
project lifetime. Here you can find a calendar with the most relevant ones:

NEWS FROM THE PARTNERS AZTI: EXPOLIVA Workshop The XVIII International Fair of Olive Oil and Related Industries EXPOLIVA 2017 took place on 10-13 May in Jaén (España). On 12th May, the fifth edition of ESPACIOINNOVA ‘Transfer and Action’ was held, as part of the forum for scientific and technology transfer for the olive industry: http://www.expoliva.com/expoliva2017/simposium/grupo-enfoque-valorizacion-mejora-calidad-plagas.aspx On this occasion, some seminars were organized jointly by AZTI and CITOLIVA to disseminate the latest advances in the field of the valuation of olive oil production by-products, the improvement of the quality of olive oil and the fight against diseases that threaten olive trees. During the first half of the conference, AZTI organized a workshop to disseminate the results of the SUMO project, which was attended by other members of the SUMO consortium (CVR, INTI and INIA). Additionally, several representatives of companies, consultants and universities were invited to participate and present different cases of success in the valorization of by-products derived from olive oil. Here you can access the Workshop presentations: http://www.sumo-project.eu/en/featured/workshop-of-azti-in-expoliva/ AZTI in the RRB conference The 13th edition of the International Conference on Renewable Resources & Biorefineries took place in Wroclaw, Poland from 7-9 June, 2017. This conference welcomed about 250 international participants from over 30 countries. Delegates from university, industry, governmental and non-governmental organizations and venture capital providers presented their views on industrial biotechnology, sustainable (green) chemistry and agricultural policy related to the use of renewable raw materials for non-food applications and energy supply. Mikel Orive from AZTI made a presentation on Wednesday, 7 June in the module 2C - Bioenergy- I. The presentation “New integrated polyphenols recovery and anaerobic digestion of two-phase olive pomace (alpeorujo)” described the current situation and some key preliminary results of the research developed by AZTI in the SUMO Project.
