Scenarios Jeannette decides to finally take that adventurous trip she’s been craving her entire life. Despite her best friend not coming along, even though she said she would, she decided to take this adventure by herself. She flies to California, and on her way there, is told about an app that will help her navigate the Yosemite National Park. She opens the app, and begins to plan her adventure. She selects her interests; Hiking, Photography and Bird watching. Within seconds, she is able to locate several trails, hot spots for bird watching, and scenic photo opportunities, that were pinned by other users who have been there before. Using the built-in Planner/Checklist, she is able to organize her itinerary exactly how’d she like, and is able to map out her plan of action. She finally arrives, and she heads out on her journey. While there, she discovers there are other people with similar interests, going on a similar path, and suddenly she no longer feels alone.

Scenarios

Jayce has become fed up with the same every day life he lives in San Diego, and decides he want’s to do something dangerous and new. He books a flight to Colorado, to do some exploring and hopefully some rock climbing. He arrives at his hotel and opens his new navigation app, that was suggested by fellow explorers. He checks the weather using the built in weather forecast and heads out to begin his adventure. Upon arrival, he browses through the app, looking for the perfect trail and route. He uses the Trail Rating System, and notices that majority of the trails in the area are beginner to intermediate trails. As an expert hiker, these are a little too trivial for Jayce’s liking, and searches for a more difficult trail. He makes his way to his new trail, but receives a notification that there is an unmapped trail nearby, that was added by another user. At first, Jayce is skeptical, but after seeing other users review this unknown trail, and even seeing user uploaded photos, he is reassured, and begins his hike up the uncharted trail.

Mood Boards

Wireframes

Simple, clean designs with lots of imagery and use of icons

Wireframes

After prototyping my wireframes, and after my preliminary user testings, it became noticable that navigation was clunky

Missing: •ability to navigate between sections

High Fidelity 1

The initial solution for navigating between seperate screens would be through a drop down menu

High Fidelity 2

However, that resulted in a more time consuming way to achieve the same goal, so we introduced a nav bar.

High Fidelity 3

Process to add a Quest Step 1

After more testing, we then realized that some users did not want to read about the park info = touch point Step 2

Step 3

High Fidelity 3 Process to add a Quest Step 1

= touch point Step 2

So we added quick add options that allow users to skip the information. This helps us cater to more experienced users who know more about the parks than others might.

•Create your profile •Lists your interests •Set your skill levels •Map your journey (see what I did there?)

Start Adventuring! •Follow some trails •Explore user rated points of interests •Look for other activities nearby •Find people who are on the same trail or looking for same activities!

Time to Head back! •Make your way back to the beginning of the park and prepare to head back home. •Check your Adventure Points earned during your visit. •Check Distance Traveled

Jayce begins his adventure. He finds the more challenging activities and goes after them. He spends time hiking and kayaaking. He runs into other users of similar skill levels, and joins them on their hike.

Jayce makes his way back towards the start. Because the app saves his exact trail that he’s walked, he is able to retrace it back with ease.

Jayce reviews his journey, and looks back at the points of interests he’s visited. He adds his photos to the collection, rates the adventures he’s had, and looks back at how much distance he’s explored.

•This is cool, I have all my marked trails and points of interests highlighted on my map. •Awesome, I can find my activities that I’m interested in with ease! •Cool! I can sort through difficulty levels

•That was great. Time to make my way back to the car! •Cool! I can see the path that I traveled, and easily navigate back to the start!

•What a fun day, I wonder how much distance I traveled? •I wonder what badges I earned from my adventure. •I wonder what other peoples experiences were with the adventures I had.

•Relieved that the app can provide me with reliable navigation •Excited that I can interact with other users on similar adventures •Intrigued by the user uploaded trails

•Relieved I was able to still navigate back to the start, even without connection •Happy that I had a new adventure

•Feel accomplished, after looking back at all I’ve done today •Feel proud of the amount of steps I took, and the amount of time spent exploring.

Jayce creates his profile, and sets his interests and skill levels. He is recommended certain activities that correspond to his previously entered information. He then starts planning his route, and marks interest points

•How can I make this visit to a national park fun and easy to explore? •What app will provide me with the best experience navigating through my hiking trails?

•This looks cool. It’s free, has good reviews and some interesting features. •This other app looks cool too, though it has less features.

•What do I do exactly? •Seems interesting. •How do I rate my skills?

•I want to try something new •I want to explore new places •I’m not very good at planning things •I’m not the best with technology

•This looks cool. It’s free, has good reviews and some interesting features. •This other app looks cool too, though it has less features.

•This seems like a bunch of work •What is the point of all this?
