FROM THE DIRECTOR “It is the old intelligence of pain that I admire: how it moves around inside of him like smoke; how it knows exactly what to do with human beings to stay inside of them forever.” The Story of the Father, Tony Hoagland “This is a love letter to my father. He is not dead. It’s a shame that folks hold off ‘til somebody dies to say how much they mean to ‘em. I’m gonna go ahead and do it now.” Jacqueline Goldfinger’s dedication of The Arsonists What would you say to a loved one lost if you had one more chance? What do you dream they say to you? Would you ask them for advice, tell them you love them, sit quietly in your favorite moment together? We grieve those lost opportunities. That history of love that cracks open to reveal a future pain when lost. In some ways grief is the desire to hide away in that dark quiet space in between life and death. It is a place that can devour you if you let it, and it is that very place that our play explores. Sometimes when you are stuck only the people you love can pull you out. There is great power in love, and despite the overwhelming feelings of grief and pain and fear that we may feel, love will always strengthen us. We must lean into that love when the world around us seems to crumble. If you could spend one last day with someone you love what would you do? What would you say? What are you waiting for?

— Allison Heishman
