Chapman Freeborn appoints Scott Collier as President – ACMI Leasing

Chapman Freeborn, the global air charter and leasing specialist, has appointed Scott Collier as President – ACMI Leasing to lead the newlyformed global ACMI department.

Collier brings almost three decades of extensive industry experience to Chapman Freeborn from across all areas of the industry, from airline operations, commercial sectors and tour operating, to running his own successful aircraft leasing company. His breadth of aviation insight has led to his aptitude for identifying potential opportunities in adversity and navigating the more challenging leasing markets globally.

In his new role as President – ACMI Leasing, Collier will lead Chapman Freeborn’s ACMI teams globally, working closely with them on a daily basis with a key focus on adding value to the company’s clients and suppliers, and to Chapman Freeborn as a whole. He will also use his plethora

of experience to provide advice to Chapman Freeborn’s airline partners, building and maintaining open channels of communication across the globe.

Air Menzies International expands operations in Canada

AIR Menzies International (AMI), a leading global wholesale freight forwarder that is part of Menzies Aviation, announces the opening of a new branch near Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada.

The new location reinforces the company’s commitment to ensuring the reliable movements and safe supervision of freight for customers from start to finish, particularly between AMI locations.

The new branch is AMI’s second in Canada and the latest addition to the company’s network spanning 11 countries. IAG Cargo restarts flights to China

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced it will restart services between London-Heathrow and Beijing and Shanghai after almost two years.

From 23rd April, IAG Cargo customers will be able to export and import vital goods on a daily rotation between London-Heathrow and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. In addition, services between London-Heathrow and Beijing Daxing Airport will resume on 3rd June, with four flights each week.

During the early pandemic period, IAG Cargo offered customers cargo-only services and charters between the UK and China to support the delivery of essential cargo needed for the fight against Covid-19. The business helped governments and private customers transport more than 11,000 tonnes of vital PPE and medical supplies from China.

From January 2020 and summer of 2021, IAG Cargo operated 700 charters and 160 cargoonly flights to China, with the last cargo-only service between London Heathrow and Shanghai in June 2021, and last cargo-only service to Beijing in July 2021.

“Europe – China is one of the world’s most important trade lanes, and a vital part of our network; we’re so pleased to be reopening the route after a long pause. With high-tech items, e-commerce, clothing and automotive driving both imports and exports, we can help customers to stay better connected with their trading partners across the world. ‘More common ground’ in stabilising air cargo market

LONGER-TERM contracts between shippers and freight forwarders may signal ‘more common ground’ in a stabilising global air cargo market which saw demand dip at a slower -3% year-over-year in March, according to the latest weekly market insight from industry analysts CLIVE Data Services, part of Xeneta.

The distribution of shippers’ contract duration in the first quarter of 2023 saw the number of six-month agreements rise to 36% versus 23% in Q4 of last year, a shift which Niall van de Wouw, Chief Airfreight Officer at Xeneta, says could indicate a ‘hunt for volume’ by forwarders which want to lockin customers for a longer period of time.

This latest data comes at a time when some retailers are starting to voice concerns over the hoped for rise in consumer spending in Q3 this year and a resulting need to restock inventory levels. As the cost-of-living crisis gathers pace in prime consumer markets, and the conflict in Ukraine shows no sign of abating, retailers now fear a slower and subdued market, meaning restocking and the peak season airfreight windfall this usually creates may not materialise.

“I think we’re seeing signs that some forwarders are willing to take a little more risk on what airfreight rates might do because they don’t expect the market to drop much further. Everybody wants to achieve growth, but if the market is not growing, you have to grab a share from someone else. The fact that we see longer term contracts between shippers and freight forwarders is a signal that the market is stabilising. Shippers have regained some ground because of the lower rate conditions, which have affected the airlines and forwarders, but it’s not like the bloodbath we see in the ocean market,” he said.

Cainiao Partners with Shenzhen Airport to launch air cargo centre

CAINIAO Network, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group Holding Limited, has announced its partnership with Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport (“Shenzhen Airport”) to establish an air cargo centre, with plans to launch more international cargo routes originating from Shenzhen.

The new flights are launched in partnership with Atlas Air and will operate twice a week, with a loading capacity of over 220 tonnes per flight. Atlas Air will provide cross-border cargo transportation services for product categories ranging from electronics to automobiles.

The inaugural chartered flight connecting Shenzhen, China to São Paulo, Brazil was officially launched last weekend at a signing ceremony attended by representatives from the Brazilian government, Shenzhen Airport, Atlas Air and Cainiao Network.

“This collaboration between Cainiao and Shenzhen Airport represents a significant milestone as we establish air cargo centres in key international airports to integrate our smart logistics technologies and global network within the value chain,” Dr Ding Hongwei, Vice President of Cainiao Network, said.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of new international cargo routes with Cainiao,” John Dietrich, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Worldwide, said. “Through deepened cooperation with Cainiao, we will be able to better serve Chinese brands as they export to the rest of the world.”

Jan de Rijk Logistics appoints Daniël Uijtdewillegen Chief Operating Officer

JAN de Rijk Logistics has announced the appointment of Daniel Uijtdewillegen as their Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective immediately.

In this new role, Daniel will be responsible for overseeing the operations of their transport business units, including International Transport, Benelux Transport and Intermodal Transport. He joins the Jan de Rijk Logistics leadership team consisting of CEO, CFO and COO.

“Daniel is a seasoned professional who has been with our organisation since 2006, where

he fulfilled several operational positions, including planning, operations manager, and operations director. WCS embraces innovative ideas

THE air cargo sector is ever changing and expanding, as more companies enter the arena and new regions present exciting opportunities. To fully capitalise on opportunities within the industry, it is key for companies to look at how they can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.

Looking toward the future, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will be looking to celebrate innovative ideas during the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) presenting the winner of the fourth edition of the IATA Air Cargo Innovation Awards.

“The air cargo industry is crucial to the global economy and provides vital supply chain efficiencies. It is a highly competitive sector, and therefore needs to continuously reinvent itself, embrace new technologies and adapt to customer expectations,” IATA stated.

The event “aims to promote innovation and encourage the development of new concepts and ideas that contribute to air logistics’ digitalisation, sustainability, safety and security.”

Three finalists will present their projects during the conference, with delegates voting for their preferred innovation. IATA will announce the winners during the closing plenary session of WCS.

The three companies shortlisted are as follows: Airblox – Digital Air Cargo Capacity Exchange; Pandora Intelligence – Manage the risk of dangerous goods through AIpowered waybill screening; Swiss Airtainer – Sustainable and Smart Active Temperature Controlled ULDs.

Turkey’s growing role in the airfreight industry

TRADE has been core to the history of Turkey, as its location between Europe, Asia and the Middle East makes it a perfect location to connect the world. With growing demand for airfreight capacity around the world, Turkey is seeking to position itself as the leading region in the industry. As the industry descends on Istanbul, the World Cargo Symposium will be a fantastic opportunity for Turkish businesses, hubs and carriers to promote their operations.

The country’s role in the airfreight industry is reflected in the growing market share held by Turkish Cargo, the logistics wing of Turkish Airlines. In 2022, the International

Air Transport Association’s (IATA) World Air Transport Statistics data found that Turkish Cargo ranked first among the European air cargo companies and 4th among the global airlines.

In the six years, from 2016 to 2022, Turkish Cargo saw its market share grow from just below 2% to over 5%, according to IATA’s figures. The growth of Turkish Cargo reflects the potential benefit from harnessing the power of connectivity through the region, linking hundreds of destinations swiftly. From Turkey’s largest city Istanbul, the carrier can reach 60 capitals within seven hours.

THE International Air Transport Association (IATA) is hosting the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) to Istanbul, Turkey from 25th-27th April. The event will bring together companies across the industry for plenary sessions, workshops and summits, tackling topics including technology and innovation, security and customs, cargo operations and sustainability.

“Air cargo is operating at nearly pre-pandemic levels. But the way it operates has changed dramatically. This is due to a convergence of economic and geo-political forces, continuing priorities on improving sustainability, safety, and reliability, as well as emerging opportunities with new markets, technologies, and digitalisation. This year’s WCS will explore how to keep air cargo profitable while addressing these priorities, challenges, and opportunities,” Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, said ahead of the event.

Sessions at the event will cover several crucial aspects of safety, sustainability and digitalisation, covering lithium batteries, ULD and operations, ESG reporting, reducing plastic waste, attracting and retaining talent, e-commerce, air cargo market dynamics digital distribution and booking, and digital cargo and one record.

GROWING GLOBAL PHARMA HUB

Emirates SkyPharma is a purpose-built facility, dedicated exclusively for the handling of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments. Through its airfreight operation, Emirates SkyCargo, the carrier transports roughly 100 million kilogrammes of temperaturecontrolled pharmaceuticals annually.

This is accomplished through its network of wide-body passenger planes, including the B777 and flagship A380, as well as its dedicated fleet of 11 B777-F freighter aircraft. In terms of capacity, this amounts to the equivalent of loading 1,020 B777-F freighters.

In addition to cold storage, Emirates SkyCargo also offers valueadded services such as re-icing, with a dedicated, centralised control tower in Dubai, which monitors and tracks all pharma shipments, mitigating any potential irregularities.

Emirates SkyPharma provides a temperature-controlled space of more than 8,800m2, specifically designed for pharmaceutical shipments. The facility is located at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) and is connected by a dedicated 24/7 bonded and refrigerated trucking service. The facility includes two specific areas for varying temperature ranges, 372 cool cells, 88 temperature-controlled automated ULD handling positions, and 12 temperature-controlled acceptance and delivery truck docks.

To make sure pharmaceutical cargo remains in a stable environment at all times, there are two specific temperature zones configured within the Emirates SkyPharma facility: 2-8°C (COL) and 15-25°C (CRT).

SkyCargo has a dedicated section for managing active containers, equipped with plug-in points, recharging and battery replacement capabilities, and procedures for dry ice replenishment. This ensures that the most delicate items receive the highest level of temperature control handling.

“Maintaining the cold chain is paramount, and the Emirates SkyPharma hub provides a comprehensive solution with its temperature-controlled zones, complete with integrated police, customs, and screening facilities,” Julian Sutch, Pharma Global Commercial Development, Emirates, said.

“This ensures that consignments remain in a stable environment throughout their transit or while awaiting collection or delivery. Given the stringent regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry, the hub allows for the presence of Municipality and Government officials on-site at all times for inspections and document clearance,” he added.

Largest of its kind

Emirates SkyPharma has obtained certification from Bureau Veritas for complying with the EU Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines on medicinal products meant for human use. As a result, it has become the largest multi-airport hub in the world to achieve GDP compliance. Our certification affirms our commitment to adhering to stringent guidelines during the shipment journey, covering Dubai International Airport, Dubai World Central, and the trucking GDP-certified hub.

Thanks to its extensive network and hub, Emirates SkyCargo has the capability to deliver pharmaceuticals to over 150 destinations quickly and efficiently - and speed is often crucial when it comes to Pharma.
