CARGO.ONE LAUNCHES NEXT GENERATION PLATFORM CARGO.ONE PRO

Cargo.one has launched the air cargo industry’s biggest step forward to date in equipping freight forwarders with seamless digital agent-to-agent bookings. cargo.one now enables importers to compare and book rates instantly with other verified forwarding partners 24/7. Export agents can win new business from import agents worldwide, all secured with global non-payment protection.

Before cargo.one pro, procuring rates from abroad took import agents hours or even days – a manual process made more inefficient by agents being located in different timezones, complicating communication. cargo.one pro now offers a step change experience with the opportunity to browse and book live airfreight and local charges from a wide range of verified export agents around the world. Shipments can be booked day and night, with instant confirmation, routing and airway bill details.

Import agents using cargo.one pro will often be the first to quote their customers, beating their competition by a wide margin. In an

industry where speed is of the essence, this competitive advantage can lead them to win more business.

cargo.one pro is equally exciting for export agents, who can offer live digital booking to their international partners through the platform. Instead of having to answer hundreds of requests from overseas import agents, export agents now simply receive confirmed shipments as import agents browse and book digitally.

Moreover, cargo.one pro provides an unprecedented opportunity for export agents to make new connections and receive digital bookings from a community of thousands of verified import agents around the globe. Prior to its official launch, export agents have served over 6,000 import shipment quote requests from 121 countries without the burden of manually replying to every request.

“cargo.one pro is a step change for our industry - like never before, import agents can compare and book rates instantly with verified export agents 24/7, and by listing their

offers, export agents win new business from 120+ countries, even while they sleep,” Moritz Claussen, Founder & Co-CEO of cargo.one, said.

“cargo.one pro is a uniquely global solution and is exciting everybody who tries the platform, so we’re ambitious about the size of the community it is building. We have also had a strong interest and partnered with a number of popular forwarder networks, and so we have launched our Forwarder Network Partner Program which sees us collaborating to enrol their members into benefiting from cargo.one pro,” Claussen added.

Interest in cargo.one pro from freight forwarder networks has been remarkably strong. Forwarder networks are the foundation of connectivity and security between freight forwarders.

Networks enrolled into the program enable their members to book more easily with other members of the network through cargo.one pro. cargo.one can also offer digitalisation workshops, and preferential rates for cargo.one pro.

IAG Cargo restarts flights to China

IAG Cargo, the cargo division of International Airlines Group (IAG) has announced it will restart services between London-Heathrow and Beijing and Shanghai after almost two years.

From 23rd April, IAG Cargo customers will be able to export and import vital goods on a daily rotation between London-Heathrow and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. In addition, services between London-Heathrow and Beijing Daxing Airport will resume on 3rd June, with four flights each week.

During the early pandemic period, IAG Cargo offered customers cargo-only services and charters between the UK and China to support the delivery of essential cargo needed for the fight against Covid-19. The business helped governments and private customers transport more than 11,000 tonnes of vital PPE and medical supplies from China.

From January 2020 and summer of 2021, IAG Cargo operated 700 charters and 160 cargoonly flights to China, with the last cargo-only service between London Heathrow and Shanghai in June 2021, and last cargo-only service to Beijing in July 2021.

“Europe – China is one of the world’s most important trade lanes, and a vital part of our network; we’re so pleased to be reopening the route after a long pause. With high-tech items, e-commerce, clothing and automotive driving both imports and exports, we can help customers to stay better connected with their trading partners across the world. Customers using our services also benefit from our wider network, that continues to grow and spans across six continents,” Camilo Garcia Cervera, IAG Cargo Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, said.

‘More common ground’ in stabilising air cargo market

LONGER-TERM contracts between shippers and freight forwarders may signal ‘more common ground’ in a stabilising global air cargo market which saw demand dip at a slower -3% year-over-year in March, according to the latest weekly market insight from industry analysts CLIVE Data Services, part of Xeneta.

The distribution of shippers’ contract duration in the first quarter of 2023 saw the number of six-month agreements rise to 36% versus 23% in Q4 of last year, a shift which Niall van de Wouw, Chief Airfreight Officer at Xeneta, says could indicate a ‘hunt for volume’ by forwarders which want to lockin customers for a longer period of time.

This latest data comes at a time when some retailers are starting to voice concerns over the hoped for rise in consumer spending in Q3 this year and a resulting need to restock inventory levels. As the cost-of-living crisis gathers pace in prime consumer markets, and the conflict in Ukraine shows no sign of abating, retailers now fear a slower and subdued market, meaning restocking and the peak season airfreight windfall this usually creates may not materialise.

“I think we’re seeing signs that some forwarders are willing to take a little more risk on what airfreight rates might do because they don’t expect the market to drop much further. Everybody wants to achieve growth, but if the market is not growing, you have to grab a share from someone else. The fact that we see longer term contracts between shippers and freight forwarders is a signal that the market is stabilising. Shippers have regained some ground because of the lower rate conditions, which have affected the airlines and forwarders, but it’s not like the bloodbath we see in the ocean market,” he said.

WCS embraces innovative ideas

THE air cargo sector is ever changing and expanding, as more companies enter the arena and new regions present exciting opportunities. To fully capitalise on opportunities within the industry, it is key for companies to look at how they can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their operations.

Looking toward the future, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will be looking to celebrate innovative ideas during the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) presenting the winner of the fourth edition of the IATA Air Cargo Innovation Awards.

“The air cargo industry is crucial to the global economy and provides vital supply chain efficiencies. It is a highly competitive sector, and therefore needs to continuously reinvent itself, embrace new technologies and adapt to customer expectations,” IATA stated.

The event “aims to promote innovation and encourage the development of new concepts and ideas that contribute to air logistics’ digitalisation, sustainability, safety and security.”

Three finalists will present their projects during the conference, with delegates voting for their preferred innovation. IATA will announce the winners during the closing plenary session of WCS.

The three companies shortlisted are as follows: Airblox – Digital Air Cargo Capacity Exchange; Pandora Intelligence – Manage the risk of dangerous goods through AIpowered waybill screening; Swiss Airtainer – Sustainable and Smart Active Temperature Controlled ULDs.

Turkey’s growing role in the airfreight industry

TRADE has been core to the history of Turkey, as its location between Europe, Asia and the Middle East makes it a perfect location to connect the world. With growing demand for airfreight capacity around the world, Turkey is seeking to position itself as the leading region in the industry. As the industry descends on Istanbul, the World Cargo Symposium will be a fantastic opportunity for Turkish businesses, hubs and carriers to promote their operations.

The country’s role in the airfreight industry is reflected in the growing market share held by Turkish Cargo, the logistics wing of Turkish Airlines. In 2022, the International

Air Transport Association’s (IATA) World Air Transport Statistics data found that Turkish Cargo ranked first among the European air cargo companies and 4th among the global airlines.

In the six years, from 2016 to 2022, Turkish Cargo saw its market share grow from just below 2% to over 5%, according to IATA’s figures. The growth of Turkish Cargo reflects the potential benefit from harnessing the power of connectivity through the region, linking hundreds of destinations swiftly. From Turkey’s largest city Istanbul, the carrier can reach 60 capitals within seven hours.

IATA WORLD CARGO SYMPOSIUM PREVIEW AIR CARG O WEEK

Welcome to Istanbul

THE International Air Transport Association (IATA) is hosting the World Cargo Symposium (WCS) to Istanbul, Turkey from 25th-27th April. The event will bring together companies across the industry for plenary sessions, workshops and summits, tackling topics including technology and innovation, security and customs, cargo operations and sustainability.

“Air cargo is operating at nearly pre-pandemic levels. But the way it operates has changed dramatically. This is due to a convergence of economic and geo-political forces, continuing priorities on improving sustainability, safety, and reliability, as well as emerging opportunities with new markets, technologies, and digitalisation. This year’s WCS will explore how to keep air cargo profitable while addressing these priorities, challenges, and opportunities,” Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, said ahead of the event.

Discussions

Sessions at the event will cover several crucial aspects of safety, sustainability and digitalisation, covering lithium batteries, ULD and operations, ESG reporting, reducing plastic waste, attracting and retaining talent, e-commerce, air cargo market dynamics digital distribution and booking, and digital cargo and one record.

At the event, speakers will include Ahmet Boat, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Turkish Airlines; Mehmet Tevfik Nane, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Pegasus Airlines; Kendra Kincade, President and CEO, Elevate Aviation, Marco Bloemen, Head of Seabury Cargo, Steve Smith, President and CEO, Airlink; Turhan Open, Chief Cargo Officer, Turkish Airlines.

There will also be a special session on the vital role of air cargo in humanitarian efforts, particularly focusing on recent efforts to deliver aid to Turkey and Syria following the deadly earthquakes in the region.

“Air cargo plays a critical role in delivering aid to those in need. The industry’s recent mobilisation to provide support to the people of Turkey and Syria affected by the tragedy is the latest example. With this year’s WCS being hosted in Turkey, it’s the perfect opportunity to reflect on the role that air transport plays so that airlines are even better prepared for the next humanitarian crisis,” Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, said.

Working together

Across the WCS programme, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in workshops including: The benefits of competency-based training through IATA’s Competency-Based Training and Assessment Center (CBTA Center); Improving performance on key market segments using IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators CEIV programs; How DG AutoCheck, CargoIS, Net Rates and CO2 Connect are assisting the industry in decision making and cargo compliance; An interactive e-Commerce Think Tank to identify how more transparency in e-Commerce would

benefit stakeholders; Building the next generation of talent at the Future Air Cargo Executives Summit (FACES).

Networking

Not just an arena for discussions around avoiding challenges and implementing innovative solutions, WCS provides a place for individuals and organisations to meet with leaders throughout the airfreight industry in an inspiring and stimulating environment.

The networking that events, such as WCS offer, is a major draw for individuals in attendance, with Heathrow Airport’s James Golding noting it’s a “super” opportunity that helps lead “to tangible actions to advance the efficiency and sustainability of our industry.”

To facilitate this, WCS will provide attendees with multiple networking sessions in the main exhibition hall, set aside in between talks, to allow for meetings with long-time associates or new connections.

GROWING GLOBAL PHARMA HUB

Emirates SkyPharma is a purpose-built facility, dedicated exclusively for the handling of temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical shipments. Through its airfreight operation, Emirates SkyCargo, the carrier transports roughly 100 million kilogrammes of temperaturecontrolled pharmaceuticals annually.

This is accomplished through its network of wide-body passenger planes, including the B777 and flagship A380, as well as its dedicated fleet of 11 B777-F freighter aircraft. In terms of capacity, this amounts to the equivalent of loading 1,020 B777-F freighters.

In addition to cold storage, Emirates SkyCargo also offers valueadded services such as re-icing, with a dedicated, centralised control tower in Dubai, which monitors and tracks all pharma shipments, mitigating any potential irregularities.

Emirates SkyPharma provides a temperature-controlled space of more than 8,800m2, specifically designed for pharmaceutical shipments. The facility is located at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) and is connected by a dedicated 24/7 bonded and refrigerated trucking service. The facility includes two specific areas for varying temperature ranges, 372 cool cells, 88 temperature-controlled automated ULD handling positions, and 12 temperature-controlled acceptance and delivery truck docks.

To make sure pharmaceutical cargo remains in a stable environment at all times, there are two specific temperature zones configured within the Emirates SkyPharma facility: 2-8°C (COL) and 15-25°C (CRT).

SkyCargo has a dedicated section for managing active containers, equipped with plug-in points, recharging and battery replacement capabilities, and procedures for dry ice replenishment. This ensures that the most delicate items receive the highest level of temperature control handling.

“Maintaining the cold chain is paramount, and the Emirates SkyPharma hub provides a comprehensive solution with its temperature-controlled zones, complete with integrated police, customs, and screening facilities,” Julian Sutch, Pharma Global Commercial Development, Emirates, said.

“This ensures that consignments remain in a stable environment throughout their transit or while awaiting collection or delivery. Given the stringent regulations governing the pharmaceutical industry, the hub allows for the presence of Municipality and Government officials on-site at all times for inspections and document clearance,” he added.

Largest of its kind

Emirates SkyPharma has obtained certification from Bureau Veritas for complying with the EU Good Distribution Practice (GDP) guidelines on medicinal products meant for human use. As a result, it has become the largest multi-airport hub in the world to achieve GDP compliance. Our certification affirms our commitment to adhering to stringent guidelines during the shipment journey, covering Dubai International Airport, Dubai World Central, and the trucking GDP-certified hub.

Thanks to its extensive network and hub, Emirates SkyCargo has the capability to deliver pharmaceuticals to over 150 destinations quickly and efficiently - and speed is often crucial when it comes to Pharma. Customers rely on the reliability and effectiveness of the infrastructure at both ends of the cargo’s journey, particularly the temperature control process, which is critical to maintaining the integrity of the shipment.

HUB CONNECTS THE WORLD

“With a team of highly skilled and dedicated professionals who prioritise quality, SkyCargo is the preferred choice for numerous pharmaceutical producers seeking to transport their products securely and promptly to their intended destination,” Sutch stated.

Ideally located

“The pharmaceutical hub established in Dubai by Emirates SkyCargo is unparalleled globally because of its state-of-the-art infrastructure,” Sutch said.

It’s top-of-the-line facilities have enabled Emirates SkyCargo to compete with the leading carriers in the industry and provide customers with the widest options while guaranteeing SkyCargo’s unwavering commitment to quality.

Europe constitutes the largest region in its pharmaceutical operations, accounting for 50% of its business. India, as a sole market, is equally significant at 30%, while the US accounts 10%.

Emirates Skycargo’s pharma station network comprises 35 fully GDP certified stations staffed by expert ground handlers and featuring dedicated facilities.

With a destination network of over 150 cities spanning six continents, the carrier has access to all major pharmaceutical manufacturing locations. Furthermore, it can deploy aircraft to additional destinations at short notice as part of charter operations.

“This strategic positioning enables us to rapidly and securely transport pharmaceutical cargo from its point of origin to its ultimate destination,” Sutch explained.

Expanding operations

Emirates SkyCargo’s pharmaceutical volumes have doubled year on year. Its impressive growth can be credited to multiple factors, including the significant investments made in its facilities and services, as well as the aforementioned extensive network.

Another key contributor is the hub’s strategic location in the Middle East, which places it in close proximity to the rapidly growing populations of India, Asia, and Africa.

Additionally, the airline’s loyal customer base has played a significant role in this growth, as they have come to trust and rely on the consistency and reliability that SkyCargo consistently provides.

Maintaining consistency and compliance across the 35 pharmaceutical stations worldwide with our Pharma hub in Dubai is a challenging task. Ensuring the quality of pharmaceutical products from the point of departure from the factory to the point of arrival at their destination poses a challenge as well.

By operating a pharmaceutical hub under the umbrella of SkyCargo, the carrier offers its clients an additional service that complements their portfolio of services like Fresh, Safe, and Valuables. SkyCargo’s Pharma service plays a crucial role in disease prevention and providing treatment to those who need it the most in underdeveloped regions.

“The cool chain process poses various challenges for the pharmaceutical industry, but the lack of sufficient global infrastructure to ensure consistent temperature control during transportation is a significant one. While airports are making investments in facilities, there are other essential components such as trucking, cool dollies, and dry icing facilities that require investment as well,” Sutch said. “However, SkyCargo’s state-of-theart facilities, equipment and temperature control of the cargohold guarantee a consistent temperature for pharmaceutical products throughout their journey.”
