GOLDEN SANDS EXPERIENCE
Spring has Arrived Welcome to the Spring edition of Seasons newsletter. We’ve included lots of articles we hope you enjoy, along with keeping you up to date on the latest developments within the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa and what’s happening in and around Malta. Well, Spring has arrived with Summer following close behind. The sun is shining daily now and with temperatures rapidly rising, beautiful blue skies and yellow fields carpeted in a myriad of springtime flowers, Malta really is looking quite spectacular. Springtime in Malta is vibrant and a glorious time to visit. Days are warmer and country walks are just idyllic this time of year with the beautiful flora bursting with colour. There is as much or as little to do, as you choose. One suggestion is that you must end the day marvelling at the beautiful sunsets. With the hotel being situated in the perfect spot, in the Northwest of the island to enjoy these, it’s just like having your own private viewing.

Flower Power
Malta’s countryside in springtime is like a patchwork quilt of colour, dominated mainly by the velour-carpeted fields of yellow. You will be surprised at just how many species of wild flowers are indigenous to this enchanting little island. The flowers responsible for the uplifting yellow fields are the crown daisy ‘lellux” with a scent of chamomile, these belong to the sunflower family and originate from the group known as chrysanthemums, which in Greek is a composition of two words Chrysos and anthemon translating to Golden flower. In Maltese today, the flower is referred to as “isfar Lellux” literally translating to “yellow as a crown daisy” The other popular yellow flower you will see alongside the crown daisy is the Cape Sorrel, known locally as Haxixa Ingliza, meaning “The English Plant”. Word has it It that in the early 19th Century an English Lady donated two dozen of these

plants to the Argotti Botanical Gardens in Floriana and the plant escaped and spread at a dramatic rate across the island over the next 200 years, making it one of Malta’s most popular flowering plants today. The cape in South Africa is where this now established vibrant flower originally hails from. Known not only for producing some of today’s best wines but also for it’s Mediterranean climate, it is easy to see how the Cape Sorrel has become so at home in Malta. So next time you take a walk through Malta’s beautiful countryside, make sure you have your camera handy, as these flowers make a beautiful backdrop and create that perfect postcard shot!

A few words from the
PROJECT DIRECTOR Spring is in the air, the sun is hot today and there’s a gentle breeze blowing in from the sea, which is pleasantly cool.
This part of the island in the North is fresh, green and stunningly attractive this time of year. The as yet un crowded beaches and streets make it perfect for a short pre holiday break and it’s great to see quite a few members taking up that little extra time to re charge their solar cells! We’ve been busy ourselves here at Golden Sands this year and there’s an excitement about the place and great expectations for this coming year. There is a lot to share in this edition, including the introduction of a new hotel chief operating

officer, in the outstanding Ernest Barry, who has joined Golden Sands from Radisson Blu Resort Malta at St. Julians. There are also some questions we might want to look at such as, has the Libyan unrest affected Malta and not to mention our sales drive? It sure hasn’t helped, although we are now more than used to dealing with the most difficult of climates to trade in and this was the latest in unfortunate and unpredictable events. Saying that, I am glad to say the disruption to Malta and IRC has been minimal and people haven’t been put off visiting our

safe idyllic isle, as our promotional visits are still booking strong for 2011. We have expanded our marketing drive on many fronts, pushing hard to make available, as many potential new buyers as possible, in order to regain sales momentum. The resort has had some great improvements over this winter, as well as some hefty plans that are not quite ready to release yet, which is a shame as so much work goes on unnoticed. I can tell you that we are responding to the car parking issue and although a long time coming, by the next edition I think we will have something concrete on this as well as some surprises you hadn’t expected! I would like to thank the many owners who contacted us by phone and email since the last edition, it’s always good to get feedback and as always I want to remain visible and accessible, so keep them coming. There will always be issues to solve and things can always be better. I believe communication is the key and I am currently looking at a new customer relations module. This will not only benefit our whole member base but also the staff, enhancing their ability to fully assist you. Creating a better, more efficient service. More updates to follow, when I’ve tested it to the full. In the previous newsletter, I also mentioned that there were a few external resale companies touting for business and harassing our members, namely Hobson and Bach. I am glad to say that TATOC and RDO have since posted warnings on their official websites and have issued legal investigating in their direction. Unfortunately this company has now passed its info to another rogue on the block called Mason and Liscoe. Please call us if you receive any communication and whatever you do please do not give them any money. A while ago I sent out some questionnaires asking what you would like most from your membership with regards to resort facilities, experiences, services, etc and we acted on the results. It would be a good time for us to do this exercise again, so if there is anything you’ve seen elsewhere, or have encountered an experience or service that's left you breathless, we’d love to hear about it. My main focus this winter has been on adding value to the membership that outweighs the cost, whilst at the same time

"We have a unique setting on a World Heritage Island and I am very keen for more people to discover mystical Malta’s beauty and culture" Owning a slice of history is a lot more attractive than simply a plain old resort or hotel somewhere. We have a unique setting on a World Heritage Island and I am very keen for more people to discover mystical Malta’s beauty and culture. Yes, it has beaches but so does everywhere else. But then everywhere else with beaches don’t usually offer much else? Malta really has so much more to see but as always it takes that little bit more effort to unearth the extraordinary. I’d like to assist in making this a little easier to discover. I’d like to take this opportunity to assure you of our full commitment at all times from both myself and the team here at Golden Sands, whilst wishing you a very Happy Easter and hope that we will be welcoming you to our sunny island once again, very soon.

Did you Know?
That fossils of dwarf elephants and hippopotami have been found in Malta dating back to the ice age (Pleistocene glaciation) Make it a must to visit the Ghar Dalam caves in Birzebbuga, where many precious historical fossils and bones of these animals have been found entombed for hundreds of thousands of years. There is a museum exhibiting some amazing artifacts from this era. It is said that these animals were thought to have roamed here from mainland Europe at the time of the glacial period of the ice age, about 200,000 years ago, when it is thought when there were land bridges between Sicily and Malta. The Mediterranean waters were lower then and these links provided a pathway for the animals to travel, escaping the weather in Europe when it changed and ice sheets covered most of its central regions. Although Ice never came as far as Malta, the incessant rain of the period caused floods and rivers, clearing valleys. SPRING 2011 EDITION
At Wied Dalam, the cave came about by gradual erosion of the river bed, creating a subterranean tunnel sucking in to it a plethora of Pleistocene animal carcasses, clay, stones and soil, where they remained preserved layer upon layer for future generations to discover, piecing together history as it once was.

RADISSON CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
What's new at Radisson Blu April has been an exciting time with the new arrival of Chief Operating officer Mr Ernest Barry, who has moved from Radisson Blu Resort Malta, St Julian’s to oversee the running of the Golden Sands and new developments.
January 2005 saw his appointment to General Manager of the Radisson Blu Resort, St. Julians. A post, which he occupied until the end of March this year. As part of a reorganisation of the operational side of the executive management team of the Group, Ernest was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Golden Sands and further future developments. Concurrently, Raphael Cauchi, who was previously General Manager of the Resort was promoted to Chief Operating Officer of the Radisson Blu Resort, St. Julian’s, the Coastline and Island caterers - the event catering business unit within the Group. Ernest’s vast experience within the hotel industry and his specific attention to guests satisfaction is expected to have a positive impact on the overall operation within the Radisson Blu Resort and Spa, Golden sands. Ernest commenced his career with Island Hotels Group Holdings plc in 1988 in the position of a Front Office Receptionist. Over the forthcoming years, Ernest gained a wealth of industry experience excelling in the roles of Accounts Supervisor, Food & Beverage Controller, followed by Assistant General Manager. In 1997, he was appointed General Manager of the Coastline Hotel, whereby he was responsible for the operation and management of the hotel reporting directly to the Managing Director.

He believes very much in a hands on approach and remaining visible, thus ensuring that you’ll see him around and about the Resort at all times of the day. Ernest says, "I believe that being on the floor with the staff, meeting hotel guests and owners is a crucial part of every Chief Operating officer’s daily routine, I look forward to meeting up with you shortly." Ernest is very much looking forward to bringing his touch to what is already a great Resort and is also looking forward to meeting many Members over the coming months.

A String of Pearls
Fifty two Members of staff from Island Hotels Group were awarded special recognition ‘PEARL’ awards in this prestigious annual company event, held in November, for going over and above what is normally expected from them, in their day to day working lives. Open to all employees at all levels in any department, the nominations ensure recognition is given to anyone displaying outstanding effort in numerous categories, including friendliness, creativity, eco initiatives and humanitarian deeds. The nominees received an array of prizes, which along with their certificate, included cash gifts, vouchers and a Pearl pin, whilst the eleven Overall Pearl Awardees were also presented with a crafted crystal award and will go on to be the Ambassadors for the company in the coming year, which we will be sure to update you on. HOTEL MAINTENANCE
New & Improved
Keeping up the high standards that ensure you have the luxury holiday experience every time you visit Radisson Blu Golden Sand Resorts and Spa, is ongoing and constantly reviewed. Attractions A new water feature will be completed by the time you read this newsletter, situated just outside the hotel reception. Captivating yet sympathetic to the surrounding landscape, materials were carefully chosen and warm tones selected for the glass mosaic tiles, perfectly enhancing the marble cladding. Smooth water-worn pebbles embrace the fountains circumference and to add a contemporary and striking look, a silver water sphere crowns this bold but beautiful design. The hemisphere fountain head projects a tumbling cascade of water into the pond below, adding that extra element of nature.

Incorporating the latest in up to the minute technology, energy efficient LED illumination has been used to accentuate this unique design further, at night, as well as during the day. Cote D'Or, Golden Bay, 1962
So, you have just arrived from the airport and have checked in to the elegantly decorated reception area, soft relaxing music signaling the beginning of your much-needed break. Your only decision now is whether to unpack, visit the spa, pool or relax in the warm sunshine with a deliciously cool drink, looking out over the shimmering azure Mediterranean? Have you ever wondered, when you start to relax and your mind wanders, how people used to holidays in previous years? Malta is a popular destination and visitors often comment on how sometimes they feel that certain areas seem unchanged by time or they feel that they have gone back in time, due to the local traditions that have been carried on through generations, the horse drawn carriages on the road “Karozzini” etc. Well courtesy of Jorgen LaCour, we have some fabulous photographs to share with you, taking you back to the days before

The Italian Job There are such a lot of talented people who work behind the scenes to ensure that your holiday can be the best it can possibly be. Some chefs you will never see during your stay but it is down to their passion and skill that memorable occasions are created that stay with you long after your flight home, like that delectable carrot cake or refreshingly delicious cocktail that you keep trying to replicate on your return home! We would like to tell you a little about Roberta Bartolo, a talented young chef and Institute of Tourism Studies student. Roberta entered the “Trofeo Stefano Biancioni” competition held in Reggio Calabria, Italy, last November. The first time Roberta had entered a competition, she worried her nerves would show but a lot of time and preparation goes in to the dishes Chefs prepare before such a contest and she was keen to make the most of this amazing opportunity. So after a quick one hour flight but lengthier five hour journey to the hotel that would be hosting their stay, the young chef ensured an early night in order to awake refreshed and ready to continue her journey to the Stefan Bianconi school, where the culinary event was due to take place. Final adjustments were made and the foods presented on the plates, culminating in the following menu to be evaluated by the judges: n Pan Seared Supreme of quail n S tuffed poached quail legs seasoned with cayenne pepper n Rabbit liver mousse layered with butternut squash, Parma ham & Bok Choi, Sweet potato galette, Cherry tomato confit and turn glazed vegetables in a beetroot syrup and Madeira Jus

Seasons
There is always the chance that having to travel to an event the transportation of food can let you down and Roberta suffered every Chefs nightmare when the quail egg pickled in sherez vinegar she intended to serve, had altered and she was no long able to present this, but with quick thinking she re-arranged her dish and left to prepare for the gala dinner, knowing she had given her best. With her nerves showing no sign of abating and reassurance in a phone call from one of her fellow chefs, Roberta listened intently as the awards were announced. A High gold medal in the cold plated category and overall third best in the class were fantastic results that Roberta Bartolo returned to Malta with, alongside a very satisfied smile and a feeling of ….calm! Well-done Roberto and her fellow team mates who achieved between them, 7 golds, 1 silver and 5 trophies. A successful contest, all round.
