A few words from Perry perry newton // Project director

What a great start to 2012!! With increased demand for our resort internationally and a higher volume of interested promotional tour visitors, it’s no wonder we’ve had the busiest January and February for the last 3 years!!

Of course this has not happened by coincidence, preparation is key to success. The hard work put in by the Azure team during the last quarter of 2011 has proven highly successful. Phase one of the new Azure website will be rolling out early April and along with the extremely popular face book page. www.facebook/azure we have opened up a whole new world of opportunity for people to become involved. We have purposely split the website construction in to three phases, welcoming feedback from members every step of the way,

The Heavenly Collection Fractional award winners In February we were very proud to have won industry magazine -Perspective’s –award. The Heavenly www.azure.com.mt

Collection, was crowned “Best Fractional Resort in Europe and the Middle East “ This adds yet another accolade to our wall of fame awards and will sit proudly amongst our already impressive list of accomplishments to date. Towards the end of February I spoke on two panels at this years World Fractional Summit held at the Marriott, Grosvenor square, London. I was joined by many international hotel and resort companies, as well as actual members and owners, which helped everyone understand the wants and needs of today’s owners and prospective buyers. I feel this was a key move by the organisers and will help all hotel and resort developers who are working to constantly improve their sales offering, their resort service and any new products that they are working

on, to be as attractive, inspiring and successful for both company and customer alike.

New Fractional Products Although we still have a way to go to achieve a sell out at Golden Sands, Resales is still our commitment and that will begin in 2015. This will not and should not stop us creating new offerings by way of a fractional product to members wanting to move to the next level of ownership abroad. We are finalising some exciting new membership options that will be open for members to view fractional and whole membership options in Malta. This is in response to increasing worldwide demand for these types of products, so more to follow; it’s exciting to see the product evolving.

All change comes about by feedback and we all now have an online community through our Facebook page to communicate anything and everything quickly and directly to the resort “so please use it”. This has, for instance, brought many comments from you wanting discounts for early payments of the annual members renewal fee (AMRF), which we responded to and happily this was a huge success, with very high collection rates in record time. culminating in members making a saving along with funds for the resort. I would personally like to say a big thank you for your continued involvement in the resort and thank you again for your emails to me personally regarding your membership and the resort - Yes I do read them all.

Gregg Anderson Global Vice President Registry Collection presents award to Perry Newton on behalf of the Heavenly Collection - Regional award winners of ‘Best Fractional Resort in Europe & the middle East’

Client experience enrichment programme I have made some tweaks and improvements, assisted by Ernest Barry, within the hotel, which I am sure you will all appreciate. Myself, Ernest and the whole team have in the last 2 months set out on a course of “total improvement”. Headed the Client Experience enrichment programme. I am and will be involved at every step and would like you to be too! It’s basically a road map of our whole client experience from the minute you make a booking to the minute you leave! I would appreciate your thoughts on how you feel and what differences you all notice. In the meantime please feel free to mail me with any incredible services or experiences

that you’ve ever had on your travels, which we can consider adopting as we strive to enhance the experience and enjoyment of the membership! As for the rest of the year I feel we are encountering huge change this year, renewed vigour for travel and an eagerness to explore. Everyone wants to travel and everyone wants some sun, clear skies, fresh healthy food and crystal clear waters to dip in to and quite frankly…why not?

seeing that the real gem of Malta is in its rich culture, its diverse landscape and its key attribute being its long history timeline that is so incredibly rich. A Hollywood writer would have a real headache deciding which incredible story to tell first as there are so many, and some would be quite a surprise! So why not set yourself a little goal this year? - To find out something you didn’t know about Malta?

We’ve enlisted the help this year of a few experts on the Islands History (part of the enrichment programme that I was telling you about) so that you may have the opportunity to find out some things that may surprise you to know about Malta. You can always post it on our facebook page for other members to see! Until then have a great spring and a very enriching next visit.

Harrods showcases Malta Malta will be thriving this year. Throughout the month of March, Harrods -the world famous Knightsbridge department store showcased this idyllic Mediterranean island in its window displays. The Malta Tourism Authority is finally www.azure.com.mt

Easter time is here again with the promise of fine weather, which has already given us a great taster of things to come with temperatures over the past week edging close to 20 degrees. We are all looking forward to a busy and exciting season ahead.

Radisson Golden Sands Finalists in Rezidor Hotel awards January 2012 started off well, with an award. The Radisson Blu Resort and Spa, Golden Sands were one of three finalists nominated from within The Rezidor Hotel Group, worldwide, for the title of “Franchise Hotel of the Year”. This award is testament to our commitment towards providing a high quality of customer care as well as an equally high level of accommodation. In February the awards continued and The Heavenly Collection was crowned regional winner of the “Best Fractional Resort in Europe and The Middle East” Our investment within the Heavenly Collection gains not only a further accolade for the resort but also global

attention from industry leaders putting us firmly on the map. Once again may I take this opportunity to thank all the management and staff for their continued commitment and loyalty.

Visitors to Malta Record Numbers achieved 2011 proved to be Malta’s record year for tourist arrivals. The average stay was shorter when compared to previous years but the numbers achieved were outstanding. This result is due to various factors that have come together in a positive fashion on the island. This year the bookings for summer, to date, are very encouraging and we are ahead of last year with regards to the number of reservations and I am sure that we will continue to improve upon previous years.

Malta’s Temples and the Egyptian Pyramids On a completely different medium the arrival of spring, in Malta, holds a very special meaning for those interested in viewing the stars and the universe. The island is very special on this count, thanks to the existence of numerous temple sites, one of the most prominent being the Mnajdra Temples, in Qrendi. Ranked as the oldest free standing structures in the world, Malta’s temples are said to predate even the Egyptian pyramids. The spring equinox was recently celebrated at Mnajdra and a gathering of early risers met just after 5am for a guided tour and to witness the sun passing exactly through the lower temple’s main doorway lighting up the main axis.

The equinox is celebrated with the sunrise on the first day of each season underlining the relationship between the temples and celestial bodies. We don’t know for sure if these orientations were intentional but they are seen throughout the island’s temple designs so it is quite probable. You must make it a point to visit this unique site during your next visit. The hotel is preparing for the next event in the spring calendar - Easter and we have a lot of exciting activities that we are introducing to our guests this year. The sun is shining, the sea looks incredibly inviting, so all that remains for me to say is to wish you a relaxing Easter break and hope to see you all very soon.

WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING By Kirsti Newton

Winter in Malta is generally a quiet affair but this year started off well and the resort had more preview visits than previous years, where potential members arrived and were shown the benefits of vacation ownership along with a tour of the prestigious Radisson Blu Resort & Spa. Azure has been working closely with the hotel on introducing activities and events for our guests to enjoy. How to make pizza Agliolio provided the perfect backdrop for 20 budding pizza chefs from Verdala, International School in Malta. Keith took on the challenging task of teaching these eager 5-year-old ‘Jamie Oliver wannabees’ to make and eat their very own perfect pizza.

Keith Taylor helping his protégé Chef in Agliolio

The children donned their mini chef hats and were stationed behind a table coated with a light sprinkling of flour – which the children excitedly began writing their names in. Containers of fragrant tomato paste (kunserva), freshly grated cheese and numerous toppings that included a firm kids favourites – sausages! Were placed alongside a mini ball of dough in front of each eager face. Rolling pin in hand a

feverish 15 minutes ensued with Keith assisting each and every child in creating their own masterpiece which was then whizzed off to the kitchen for cooking. With no wavering in concentration – Keith excelled in maintaining every child’s focus throughout – no mean feat with a pack of excited 5 year olds – believe me! Seated around a balloon adorned long table, silence followed when the children got to enjoy the fruits of their hard labour. Such positive feedback was received from both children and parents alike that this interactive experience will be held every week, at Agliolio, as part of the enrichment programme.

When not working Debbie enjoys walking and socialising with friends, dinner and going to the pictures. Nino works alongside Louise and Fiona in the reservations department and liases with members, not only in facilitating bookings but listening to members’ positive experiences and sharing these. Nino is as busy outside the office as he is whilst at work with studying for Accounting (ACCA), and writing about strategic development of brand in current economy. He relaxes with an impressive eight hours of sporting activity each week. Nino’s languages include English, Serbian, French, Slovenian and Russian

Meet Gaetano, another staff member who has been with the company since inception. Dealing with, directing and answering all email and telephone calls that come in from members, Gaetano has experience with the compliance department and so is familiar with the different areas of the company making him ideal to assist members and direct them to the relevant department to assist in answering their queries. Making reservations and answering all related queries in this field, Fiona likes nothing better than meeting members and seeing them leave with a smile on their face after they have booked their forthcoming holiday. i r n e H Concierge Corner By Henri Diacono

“We have been very busy behind the scenes this winter communicating with various organisations across the island to introduce further activities for our members. We are now working with the Ramblers Association of Malta and I am pleased to say that a number of our guests have joined them on interesting walks, off the beaten track, that reflect the Mediterranean rural characteristics of Malta. A full programme of activities can be available upon arrival.”

200 Years of Dickens 7th February 1812 was an important date in the literary calendar. Marking 200 years since the birth of this famous British author, the British Council of Malta organised a night at the Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa this February. This was an exceptionally well attended event where our guests got to share typical Victorian snacks on the terrace overlooking Vittoriosa making for a perfect and thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Carnival time Carnival plays a very important role in Maltese traditions. A time of merriment, masked balls fancy dress costumes and carnival floats, in Valletta. The word carnevale translates literally to ‘meat allowed’ to emphasis

the distinction between this period and the austerity of lent which follows on. The Knights of St John introduced the tradition and the Maltese have kept it going since the 1530’s.

Heavenly in Europe One of our recent guests, the famous Swedish artist Leif Zetterling visited the Radisson Blu Resort and Spa on 12th January for one week.

Easter events Easter is fast approaching and is another time to enjoy the island’s traditions. Good Friday pageants and exhibitions of the last supper display, that have been painstakingly hand carved are some of the events to look out for, as well as the run with the statue of the Risen Christa characteristic in most places simulating the rising from the death of Christ. Lent and Easter also have their gastronomic delights for all to enjoy and anyone with a sweet tooth can enjoy many cakes and pastries including the Maltese favourite, Figolla – a sweet almond pastry.

Famous for his political satiric portraits, Mr Zetterling lives in the city of Stockholm and was overjoyed to be staying at a property ensconced within open countryside and situated right by the sea.

St John, by this colourful artist was discovered, alongside a smaller piece of St Jerome. “Everyone I have had dealings with at the hotel has been warm and extremely helpful, the staff deserve an AAA+” Mr. Zetterling generously added that “ I would put this stay amongst the 3 best stays I have experienced anywhere!”

He was impressed with the breakfast too and went so far as to say that he believed it was the best in all of Europe!

I would like to thank Mr. Zetterling, on behalf of The Heavenly Collection at The Radisson Blu Resort & Spa for his kind words and look forward to welcoming him back again in the future.

With a love of Caravaggio, Mr. Zetterling made sure that his visit included a trip to Valletta and to St Johns Co-Cathedral where a unique painting depicting the beheading of

AZURE IN THE PRESS We are very excited to have received February’s award for The Heavenly Collection from the most read industry magazine – Perspective magazine. The regional award for “The best Fractional resort in Europe & the middle East” was presented at the end of the Annual Global Networking Expo, GNEX 2012 – The Global Meeting Of Minds in Cancun, Mexico.

Attended by 177 timeshare and fractional industry professionals representing 91 companies, this was a large event and hugely beneficial to companies that come together to share best practices and discuss new development projects. Following the Mexico event, RCI’s team including Global Vice President of The Registry Collection® Gregg Anderson and affiliate servicing manager Marj Anderson, arrived in Malta to present the award to Azure’s Project Director Mr. Perry Newton. Later in the month Azure were present at the Fractional Summit Europe, held at The Marriott, Grosvenor Square, London where Perry was asked to speak on a panel to the industry and owners alike, Azure were overjoyed to be shortlisted in the top three companies for the Fractional Summit’s Innovation and excellence award.

Other Industry News

What does this award mean to our members? With a successful product that is at the top end of the market, The Heavenly Collection already surpasses all accommodation on the island of Malta with its design, space, views and resort, so members are being offered something not only unique but highly versatile including its affiliation to RCI’s esteemed Registry Collection where members have the opportunity to exchange their week and stay at a selection of carefully chosen resorts around the world that meet the specific criteria set by The Registry Collection, including a high standard of service and accommodation as well as specific locations i.e. ski, beach resorts etc., therefore eliminating the risk factor in deciding where to stay in perhaps an unfamiliar country. With Azure already recognised as a leading company within the European industry, winning this latest award highlights Azure’s success globally and its position at the forefront of the vacation and fractional market with constant fresh ideas that recognise the needs and requirements of its members to create the ultimate holiday experience and suit their individual lifestyle demands.

The Registry Collection Fractional Award Winners The Registry Collection programme, the world’s largest luxury exchange network, were recent winners at London’s Fractional Summit, where it was chosen as the winner of the prestigious Services to the Industry Award. Gregg Anderson, global vice president, The Registry Collection, said: “This was truly a landmark event for The Registry Collection. We are honoured to receive this award from Fractional Life and to receive this recognition from its judges, all respected peers in this market. “At the heart of our business philosophy is always providing a worldclass experience to our members, so to win the approval of many who have also done so much for the fractional industry is both gratifying and inspiring for The Registry Collection team.”

Ayurveda What can it do for you? By Kirsti Newton

Ayurveda offers an ancient and holistic healing approach to the world of Spa treatments and massages. With its very own Ayurvedic centre in the Myoka Sands Spa, here at Golden Sands, you are assured of specialist therapists who practice what is regarded to be the oldest healing science. These age old therapies in luxury surroundings offer you numerous health benefits and a chance to rid your body of existing ailments and a prolonged sense of serenity, along the way.

This ancient herbal medicine originated in India around 5,000 b.c and the word Ayurveda is made up from the Sanskrit words ‘ayus’ – meaning life or life-span and ‘veda’ meaning knowledge. There are many Ayurvedic treatments, so it is advisable to have a consultation where a specific treatment can be tailor made to suit your needs.

Ayurveda IS good for? Ayurvedic medicine’s main aim is to prevent disease and treat illness. This is done through a combination of maintaining balance in the body and mind through the right diet, lifestyle, a long with herbal remedies.

www.azure.com.mt

Conditions where Ayurvedic treatments have been known to be successful are: • Muscular aches and pains • Tension related headaches • Easing arthritic conditions

Ayurvedic treatments The benefits • Increased blood circulation • Increased mental alertness • Smoother and softer skin • Slows down premature ageing • Removes toxins and assists in breaking down cellulite • Reduces mental stress easing headaches

My Ayurvedic Experience Upon entering the Ayurvedic centre at the far end of the indoor pool, I was struck by the peace and tranquillity emanating from the mosaic adorned space. Fully aware of my joint aches and pains and tension headache, I let Jisha begin her firm massage with medicated oils. A warm muslin cloth containing Navara rice that had been cooked in milk along with a blend of herbs was warmed and pressed methodically across my back. The heat was welcome and the smell of lemon and medicated herbs filled my senses. The heat, she explained, carried the oils and herbs, further in to my muscles and joints to provide relief not only during the massage but also hours afterwards. The herbs and ingredients for the treatments are carefully selected and brought over from Kerala in India. The treatment ended with a

wonderful head massage that saw my headache vanish and my mind lighter and calmer than it had felt all week. She explained that the body had to be replenished with water, which I duly drunk throughout the day and that night I experienced another benefit of this massage as I enjoyed best nights sleep I’d had in a long time and awoke with the same feeling of relaxed calmness that stayed with me, throughout the day. Let your stresses and strains drift away. Book your Ayurvedic consultation today and benefit from 15% members discount on all treatments available.

Cake Corner Recipe by Jimmy Aquilina

I’m sure you remember the pictures of the wonderful chocolate creations from our previous newsletters. Created by Radisson Blu Resort & Spa’s amazing pattisier Jimmy Aquilina and his team, works of art are produced regularly throughout the year. Easter preparations are under way and the kitchens are a flurry of activity, we visited to ask for a recipe to share with our readers and walked in to find these mouthwatering bites that we just had to give you the recipe for!

White Chocolate & Pistachio Praline Pistachio ganache

To fill the mould

350g cream 700g white chocolate drops 45g glucose syrup 130g pistachio puree (100%) 150g butter 10mm high Chocolate mould • In a pan slowly bring the cream to the boil and pour in the chocolate drops. • Add the glucose syrup and pistachio puree. • Allow to cool to approximately 28’C then fold in the roomtemperature butter and set aside.

• With a ladle pour the chocolate

Note: if you have no pistachio puree available, crush fresh pistachios in the food processor into a puree.

into the clean mould.

• Swirl the moulds so the chocolate completely coats the inside of the moulds. • Pour out the extra chocolate and scrape the excess from the rim of the mould with a palette knife. Set he mould upside down and give a gentle tap to expel any air bubbles. • Fill 2/3 of the mould with the praline ganache and leave to set. • Finally pour on a thin layer of white chocolate on the surface and scrape off the excess once again. Leave to set in the fridge.

Malta’s Megalithic Temples - The mysteries behind them

Malta The mysteries uncovered By Kirsti Newton

It is not until the final stages of putting together this newsletter that you begin to see everything come to life and what is very interesting about this edition is that there seems to be a common theme running through the pages – not only the wonderfully rich and vibrant history of Malta that many a guide book has captured but that the island itself is realising the scale and importance of its hidden treasures – the temple sites in particular.

Did you know – That Malta is home to 9 UNESCO world heritage sites and 7 of these are megalithic temple sites? It is being said that there are up to 50 temple sites throughout Malta and the neighbouring island of Gozo and these are just the ones that are know about. Discoveries of apparent underwater temple sites have been in and out of the press for the last decade. It does seem that more and more people are interested in the somewhat mysterious and undiscovered side of this island – rumoured to also be the site of Atlantis!

Experiencing the Magic of Malta Holiday’s mean different things to everyone but the common

resort, to give you the opportunity to try something you would never normally have chance to in your daily life back home. To hear from people on and around the island who may give you food for though and a little nugget of information for you to take away with you on your departure.

Francis Xavier Aloisio - Author denominator in an enjoyable trip for everyone is “the experience” that you enjoy whilst away from your daily life and its requests. It could be a number of factors that make up this experience from the people, to the service to tasting exquisite food or uncovering something new, learning a little bit about where you visit and immersing yourself in the experience. So we are introducing new activities and talks throughout the year at the

One such man we are introducing is local author Francis Xavier Aloisio. Francis was born in Malta “the island of magic and mystery” as he intriguingly refers to it. Francis goes on to explain how his interest grew. “Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the history of Malta, a small archipelago, situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. These islands have been at the crossroads of many civilizations, bestowing on them a very colourful legacy and a woven tapestry of ancient, old and modern history.

Later on in my life, I was captivated by the mystery and richness of its prehistory. I soon came to realise that Malta’s uniqueness can be discovered in its prehistoric pasts! This landmass of a mere 320 km² is home to more than fifty prehistoric sites. But how many people around the world know about these mysterious sites? How many of you know that these temples are the oldest prehistoric structures in the world? My research led me to write and publish the novel Islands of Dream that delves into the mystery and marvels of these temples. I am now excited to share with you my insights through a presentation that will both intrigue you and entice you to visit the sites that are situated around and near the resort.”

Islands of Dream Available from Booklocker.com as PoD, ebook or Kindle format, Amazon and Bn, and from Golden Sands (Malta). Curious? Come along and listen Francis and hear his thought provoking talk Date: Wednesday (Every fortnight from 28th March) Place: Member’s lounge Time: 4pm www.azure.com.mt

Reviewed February 16, 2012 Nice hotel, staff are pleasant enough and will help when requested. Rooms are lovely, we had a country view which was large with kitchen facilities and double-sink in bathroom. Also had big balcony which was nice for a morning cup of tea in the complimentary towel robes. We spent the day in Valletta which was really enjoyable and also spent time on the small beach next to the hotel. This was lovely and watching the sun set at the beach bar one evening was a highlight for us.

“Nice to be back” Reviewed February 26, 2012 Mr & Mrs Portman, UK This was the second time we’ve stayed here, the first was in 2009, and we were pleased to find it as good as we remembered. This hotel is a great place to be. We are members here and can vouch for the fact that the staff are great and the setting of the hotel on the cliff top is second to none.

“best weeks for our family” Reviewed February 13, 2012 Mr & Mrs Cuppi, Italy Believe me…. every time my family stayed at this hotel we were never disappointed. Great staff great restaurants .Spa is lovely, the beach is one of the nicest on the island. Perfect relaxation holiday ! It could be a bit busy in July and August but it s fun every time. A home away from home. Nice entertainment in the evenings and children are well looked after the units are very comfortable.
