See-through Landscaping See-through Landscaping: An innovative "Bioshader" green building that regenerates fundamental building technology and matches to its local environment, therefore creating a one and only landmark to Taichung Gateway Park. Horizontally layered structure creates sunshade as well as semi-transparent threshold between Park Avenue and Taichung Gateway Park that harmonizes cultural activity and ecological landscape. This advanced architectural system not only blurs the feature of massive volumes but also allows us to landscape a continuous whirlpool flow between library and museum, as well as inside and outside, emphasizing the cultural spirit of Taichung.

Symbolic Threshold emphasizing the

Vista towards Taichung Gateway Park

This architecture acts as a symbolic threshold into the heart of Taichung Gateway Park from the Northeast axis of Park Avenue. This far-reaching perspective is important, considering the vista passing through the two volumes as a cultural gathering plaza.

Museum and Library as a Set of Figures

A cultural Landmark to emphasize Taichung's eco-city, the two apparently different cultural

Vista

symbol are not too contrasting, yet not too unified. They are looking into one another, leaning and bending, creating an invisible engagement of conversation. Their forms are represented in overhang and cantilever curvature dynamically differentiating with one another.

Pedestrian Connection

From the bustling business district alongside Park Ave comes a diverse group of businessmen, tourists, and locals all scurrying alongside the path. In contrast, the Taichung Gateway Park's nature path is an escape to cultural tranquility. As a gradual transition point of these two distinct paths, we placed our structure to smoothly bring these two diverse group of people together.

ZONING FUNCTIONS AND CIRCULATIONS

See-through Landscaping

Taichung City Cultural Center

Functional planning

To support the cultural centers open 24hours year-round, flexibility and user-friendliness in management structure is inevitable. In order for diverse group of people to freely, visually, cleanly, use the facility, an appropriate space configuration is required. Users can find within the seamless landscape, an individual spot where they can relax and find information they need. However, in order to support and congrue with the seamlessness, the publice zoning process is important. Library and museum can be managed independently. The two facilities share a plaza, as well as a basement parking area in the in-between space. Entrance to the facility is gathered to 1st floor plaza, zoning the area to safely operate during nighttime. Loading area and staff entrance is located on North and South border, in an ideal distance from the administration and storage area. It also keeps distancee\ with the pedestrians from Taichung Gateway Park. The library uses innovative digital technology, optimizing library's search system. Using GPS chips to identify book's exact placement, categorized book shelves can now be placed randomly to inspire and appeal to a new learning experience. Museum's neutral, serene spatial placement can adapt to diverse exhibitions and allow maximum flexibility

BIOSHADER - ECOSYSTEM

Taichung City Cultural Center

A bioshader is a multifunctional ecological and structural element - "sun shade", "greenerization", "rainwater use", "evaporation cooling effect", "air circulation", and "structural tectonics". In Taichung's high temperature, high humidity environment, the library and museum requires for an AC system in order to protect books and fine art. Our goal was to minimize AC Load to help optimize the green building.

Steel Wafers structures support the building, structured by the fundamental element of Bioshader that forms outer shell and stepping floor. By reutilizing the Bioshaders and pressed forming steel plate as structural elements, there becomes no need for alternative structural materials, increasing cost efficiency. By layering formed thin plates like a wafer, a strong, robust, and

In order to build diverse and irregular parts of steel wafers structure, appropriate data are sent to Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Cutting Machine and cut accordingly. Design process itself makes investigation easier, and enables to promptly simulate and feedback for customizing the desired area layout. Automating parts of the design process allows for simplifying the method to consider various feedback options.

During the day, the two volumes are hills continuing seamlessly and gently from Gateway Park. During sunset, this turns to a semi-transparent structure. After sunset, the building itself lights up like a lantern diffusing light from the gap in between louvers. These lights attract various cultural activities, reflecting Taichung's youth, enthusiasm and spirit. This structure is a living creature, surrounding its skin to delicate, thin louvers.
