Greetings… Hope everybody enjoyed Christmas, and the festive season. The New Year is already here and most of us set goals and resolutions to try and make our lives better. Ironically, many people fail to keep up their promise and take up the same resolution every year. Nevertheless it should not discourage one to take up a resolution, as you never know that this might be your lucky year! Think about setting down some serious goals and make a realistic plan to reach them. It’s actually an easier process than you may think! The sooner that you get started the faster you’ll jump start a successful and happy year! Check out page 43 ‘7 Ways to Start the New Year on a Positive Note’. Whatever promise you may have, we wish you all the very best and remember to never give up. Trends keep on changing every year, fashion comes and goes but every new fashion has a hint and touch of the old one. Wedding dresses are also the same, trends in wedding dresses change, but the overall look of the dress is always kept soft and soothing for that perfect bride. White has always been the most popular choice of colour for brides when it comes to choosing their wedding gown, but some celebrities have ditched the traditional look and donned colourful dresses instead. Looking back at the catwalks of 2013 bridal fashion shows, it seems these fashion-forward celebrities had all the reason not to wear white. Keep yourself updated with ‘The Best Coloured Wedding Dresses from the Catwalk’ on page 44. The ‘Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show 2013’ pages 22-25 - one of the biggest and most expensive extravaganzas on the style calendar took place in New York on 13th November 2013. Wearing millions of dollars of diamonds, Swarovski crystals and lingerie, Victoria’s Secret Angels hit the catwalk during the brand’s annual runway event. On the catwalk, new models made their debuts, while veteran Angels Doutzen Kroes, Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima were back. Candice Swanepoel was bestowed the honour of modelling this year’s Fantasy Bra incrusted with diamonds, rubies and yellow sapphires - the most expensive ever with a value of £6.2 million.

VICTORIA’S SECRET FASHION SHOW 2013 The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show - one of the biggest and most expensive extravaganzas on the style calendar - took place in New York on 13th November 2013. Outside the National Guard’s 69th Infantry Regiment headquarters, it was a chilly night in New York. Inside, where the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was underway, the atmosphere was hot as models took to a stage adorned at various times with shipwreck props, British flags and street lamps. Wearing millions of dollars of diamonds, Swarovski crystals and lingerie, Victoria’s Secret Angels hit the catwalk during the brand’s annual runway event. The L Brands-owned chain kicks off each holiday-selling season with a starstudded show to generate excitement about the upcoming collection. This year’s show started with a performance by the Rutgers University marching-drum line, followed by a riot of colours, crystals and jawdropping costumes. This year’s show featured six themed segments: “British Invasion,” “Birds of Paradise,” “Parisian Nights,” “Shipwrecked,” “Snow Angels” and “PINK Network,” with 40 models parading down the catwalk and a multitude of wings. A star-studded affair, the big names weren’t only bedecked in lingerie - live entertainment came courtesy of Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy and A Great Big World, while from the front row Valentino Garavani, Olivia Palermo and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld watched on. On the catwalk, Malaika Firth and Josephine Skriver made their debuts, while veteran Angels Doutzen Kroes, Alessandra Ambrosio and Adriana Lima were back. Candice Swanepoel was bestowed the honour of modelling this year’s Fantasy Bra incrusted with diamonds, rubies and yellow sapphires - the most expensive ever with a value of $10 million (£6.2 million). Pink Lady
Embrace your feminine side with the ultimate girly colour in the New Year. Strawberry shades are where it’s at and there’s a hue for everyone out there. If you want to keep it neutral then opt for pale shades. For the bold fashionistas out there, opt for hot pinks to brighten up an outfit. But as we always say, there’s no need to break the bank to do it!

Velvet
Velvet is the epitome of luxurious textures and although it’s been around for a while now it’s here to stay. Why not layer different textures, a leather top with a velvet skirt, or how about a denim shirt with velvet trousers? Mix whatever you like up for a texture mash-up and be bang on trend. Velvet dresses are also huge this season! Take your pick of our velvet faves.

Snoods
Keep cosy this winter the right way! Snoods are the way forward, not only do they keep us toastier and somewhat toastier than a scarf, but they are also bang on trend! Opt for a faux fur snood for a touch of glam, or perhaps cable knit for a casual edge. There’s plenty to choose from, how do you like our picks?

Cheap Monday Mega Snood £45

Pastel Knitwear
Why not make your knitwear that little bit more chic this winter? Pastel colours are everywhere and are the perfect girly choice for staying warm in the colder weather. An oversized pale pink jumper will look cute as well as sophisticated or if you are more a fan of aquamarine there’s plenty of pale blue hues to tempt you. But don’t forget you needn’t steer away from the high street and can save your pennies by avoiding the high-end options. Unless of course you want to treat yourself!

Resolutions
for the New Year
Fashion resolutions are a great way to improve our fashion habits in the New Year. Making style resolutions is a smart way to edit down and reassess our wardrobes. Whether it’s spending less or buying locally more, making fashion resolutions is a habit we should get ourselves into. Take a look at some possible fashion resolutions to take on this year. 1. SHOP LOCAL
There’s been a focus on shopping local recently. This may have something to do with the fact that many big corporations are falling out of favour with consumers. The practice of buying from small, local businesses is one of the most helpful fashion resolutions, because it will also help support your community. Seek out talented designers from your area and see what they have to offer.
2. EDIT YOUR WARDROBE
No matter how many clothes you have, if you’re wardrobe isn’t functional then getting dressed will often prove tiresome. Go through your wardrobe and look at the pieces on high rotation, then workshop the rest of your wardrobe around these pieces.
3. SPEND WISELY
Spending wisely isn’t about fully tightening the purse strings. It’s more about looking at where your money goes. Instead of investing in cheap, average quality pieces, why not think of buying a slightly more expensive, quality item? Those pieces will last longer and look better in the long run. BMAG 30
4. TRY SOMETHING NEW
While there’s beauty and comfort in having a defined aesthetic, sometimes we need to switch things up a bit. Make a fashion resolution this year to try a trend that you wouldn’t normally go for. Make sure that you work the trend into your own personal style so you don’t feel totally out of your comfort zone.
5. SAY HELLO TO COLOUR
Start the New Year off on a bright note by incorporating more colour into your everyday look. If it’s not clothes, then try on some colourful accessories. From acid brights to faded pastels, colour is an easy way to enhance and uplift your mood.
6. BUY FOR YOUR BODY SHAPE
This is an age-old fashion resolution, but it’s one worth noting every year. Don’t be tempted into trends that don’t suit your shape. Dressing for your body shape isn’t about concealing flaws, it’s about flaunting what you’ve got. Well, that’s my ‘glass half full’ take on it anyway.
7. RECYCLE WHAT’S IN YOUR WARDROBE
If you still haven’t mastered the art of the edited wardrobe, try to make the most of what you’ve got. Don’t let clothes sit in the back of your wardrobe unattended. Bring them out to play every once in a while. If you think they’re outdated, get creative with this fashion resolution and bring them back to life with some DIY.
8. SHOP REGULARLY
Now, this doesn’t mean that you should shop all the time. It just means that you should be smart with how you shop. I’m sure we’ve all fallen into the trap of frantically buying an ‘occasion’ outfit at the last minute. More often than not, this only gets worn once and is duly forgotten. If you take the time to shop, your wardrobe will be more thoughtfully edited and you’ll always want to wear what’s in it.
9. HAVE FUN WITH FASHION
The most important thing with fashion, in my opinion, is to have fun. The minute you start taking it too seriously is when your own personal style takes a hit. Don’t be afraid to take risks, and if you make a fashion faux pas, at least you can always learn from it!
Making fashion resolutions is just one way to define your New Year’s look and to take stock of your current wardrobe. A well thought out wardrobe is the key to always having something to wear.
7 New Ideas for Black Eyeliner to try out this Year Black eyeliner is one of the simplest cosmetic devices you can use to make a bold, sexy statement, and these new ideas for black eyeliner will take things to a whole new level. Black eyeliner can be worn by anyone, and there’s never just one way to wear it! The key is to find a good product and have fun with it! Try out these new ideas for black eyeliner next time you do your makeup. Try each tip until you find one you like or change it up and wear a new design each time.
1. JUST WING IT
Adele gave us one of the best new ideas for black eyeliner of the century. If you want a dramatic cateye look, create a winged effect with your eyeliner. This look is brilliantly bold and still feminine at the same time. The trick is to apply it thicker on the top eyelid rim than the bottom and to create almost a studded effect on the bottom lower lash lid, just like a cat’s eye looks. The top liner should be thick and winged out from the corner of your eyes.
1.
2.
3.
2. SMUDGE IT
Another new trend in black eyeliner is to go soft on the bottom eyelashes. Smudge out a little liner from the bottom lashes so it doesn’t look too harsh, then pat a darker coloured eyeshadow over the liner to help it set in.
3. THE FULL ON 360 4.
5.
6.
A 360 effect on your lovely eyes is a great way to go bold this year. Create a thick lining of black eyeliner around the entire eye right next to your eyelids’ rims, keeping the line even and going completely around the eye. This is a bold, creative way to make a serious statement with your eyeliner, so wear it proud!
4. ADD SOME CONTRAST
My favourite trend using black eyeliner this year is one I’ve used for years myself. Create a contrast on your eyes by using white shadow on your top and lower eyelids, lining the rims of your eyes. Then, add some white eyeshadow just to the bone on the top of your brow, and branching out from the top of your eyelid. Last, add in your black eyeliner as normal to set a beautiful contrast coming out from the middle of the top eyelid and line your entire bottom lid. This beautiful contrast of colour sure to catch everyone else’s eye!
5. HAVE SOME CAKE
Cake eyeliner was popular in the 1930s and ‘40s, and it’s totally worth making a comeback for this year too. Cake eyeliner is sold in a small tin and needs to be applied with an eyeliner brush. It stays on well and creates a dramatic effect very easily.
6. ADD A SPLASH OF COLOUR
One popular black eyeliner trend this year is to add a multicoloured liner to the top of your black eyeliner for a beautiful dimension of colour. Popular colours include rose, olive green and taupe. Line it just above the eyeliner on your top lid. There’s nothing like a little pop of colour to go with your favourite blouse!
7. GO GEO
7. BMAG 32
Geometric is the way to go this year ladies! Line your lashes on the rim of your eyelids as normal. Then, midway up your eyelid, create a second lash, extending from the corner of your eye up in the crease of your eye, all the way out to the side. Then, fill your eyelids in with a slightly lighter coloured shadow like grey or charcoal. The geometric approach takes a spin on the cat eye look by creating a double effect that’s actually really pretty if done correctly.

it m m a Z e Jaim
27-year-old Jamie Zammit enjoys entertainment, music, swimming and sports in general but lives and breathes magic. He considers himself to be quite entrepreneurial by nature. He is currently working in IT for The Sovereign Group, and as an entertainer/magician for the corporate sector and at Kids parties. This month B Mag interviews Jaime as he shares a bit of his magic!
How did it all start?
“It is a question often asked. I think most children, especially boys, want to learn magic at some point. There is a fine line between just wanting to know out of curiosity and being fascinated to the extent that you get hooked on a subject. That is what happened to me around 18 years ago. The initial curiosity was sparked off by a good friend and relative of a relative, Francis (Paco) Santos, who showed me a couple of magic tricks when I was very young.”
Describe your ultimate stage moments and do you get nervous? If so how do you handle that?
“It is hard to describe a particular stage moment. If I had to choose, it would be at a particular wedding in Nerja, where I revealed some very detailed personal information about someone who meant a lot to the bride. She was in tears for over half an hour. Obviously, they were “happy” tears and she still contacts me today to thank me for that experience. That is very gratifying. On the getting nervous aspect… I think you must do. The right amount off nerves keep you on edge and get the best out of you. Not being nervous means you cannot channel anything in to positive energy and sometimes being too calm can be detrimental. However, you cannot get too nervous either and with practice you learn to control them and how to concentrate on the fact that you are contributing to making people happy… so what is the problem?”
How often and for how long do you practice before an act?
“I would not say you practice for a certain period before an act. I believe the years of practice in many different areas are all a contribution to whatever I do in any act. Therefore, essentially you are practicing all the time for any act.”
How do you balance your magic with other obligations?
“By not getting stressed about having to work much. I do not mind work. I work endless hours every week but I crave that. I guess you have to in order to be able to juggle so many aspects of life around. I just enjoy it all and if you want to find time you do.”
Have you always enjoyed magic?
“Yes from a very young age. It has always fascinated me.”
Do you apply psychology to your magic tricks?
“Psychology is a massive part in magic, to an extent that most people are probably oblivious to how intentional so many of the things magicians say and do are. When one studies magic, a major part is analysing human behaviour and how one thinks of the ordinary. By doing that we can then attempt to manipulate and deceive by using it to our advantage using psychology.” BMAG 34
What is the greatest appeal of becoming a magician?
“There are endless positives from becoming a magician. I could write about it all day. First, the social skills to be acquired are immense. It also makes one a much better presenter and speaker, making you feel comfortable in front of big audiences. It also allows you to learn many things which most humans will never be exposed to and adopt a different way of thinking “logically” about life. You can learn a lot about people by studying magic or the art of deception.”
Best advice you have ever received?
“If you want something go for it and do something about it. Do not just complain about not having something whilst not wanting to do anything about achieving it.”
How hard do you push yourself?
“I would say quite hard. I like a challenge. It spurs me on and keeps me busy.”
What’s the side of you that the public never sees?
“I can be quite argumentative. Also, the copious amount of chocolate I devour on a daily basis is scary and not seen by many.”
What are your guilty pleasures... food wise?
“Jamon iberico de bellota and chocolate… I eat too much choc.”
Tell us about some of the important lessons and principles you learned from your family?
“Almost every single principle I have learned is thanks to my family and in particular to my parents. My parents have always been there and we cannot underestimate how much of an influence your parent’s job in raising you have on you as a person. I am privileged to say my parents were and are absolutely brilliant!”
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
“Being healthy and doing what you want in life. You cannot ask for more than that can you?”
What is your greatest fear?
“Heights… my legs just turn to jelly.”
Which living person do you most admire?
“For me, because of what he represents in my art it has to be David Copperfield.”
Which talent would you most like to have?
“If I could sing that would be great, but I cannot to save my life!”
What do you consider is your greatest achievement?
“That is a hard one. I think my greatest achievements have come in swimming and attaining many Gibraltar national records. Without a doubt my greatest achievement in swimming was becoming the first Gibraltarian to ever swim in a semi-final of the Commonwealth Games.”
What do you most value in your friends?
“I am so lucky to have a group of friends who really are my friends, and are there when needed. Most of us have been good mates from a very young age and we have stuck together since. We do have something special amongst our group of mates. We are always there for each other, which is all that matters.”
What is the most precious gift you have given to someone?
“I am not a very good when giving gifts to be honest. I fail miserably in that department.”
What is your personal quote or motto that you live by? “A desire to have or do something achieves nothing… do it!”
If you could go back and start your life over again, what one thing would you do differently? “I would not really change anything.”
Final words to the B Mag readers.
“I hope 2014 brings health and happiness to all and thanks to all who have supported me, at the many parties and events I have attended during the past year. I would also like to add, without sounding cheesy, that when I was younger I had all sorts of people saying Gibraltar is too small to be able to perform as a magician regularly and continually tried to find negatives in what I did. I am proof that even in such a specialised area in such a small place you can make it work if you want it enough. So go and do what you love doing!”

Squeezing our blemishes, slapping on the moisturiser, over-exfoliating, these are just some of the bad habits that are ruining our skincare routines. But now it’s time to right the wrongs, undo the damage and start afresh.
It’s all too easy to scrub away at angry spots or reach for the face wipes, or worse fall into bed with a full face of makeup on - we’ve all been there. But, we might act differently if we knew that all of these beauty blunders were causing premature ageing and increased breakouts. 1. Using too much moisturiser
If a moisturiser is correctly suited to your skin type, it should feel comfortable on the skin and not leave skin feeling greasy or oily. If you select the wrong moisturiser for your skin type, your skin can become too dry or too greasy. A day moisturiser should always contain an SPF and night creams should only be used at night as they tend to be richer and don’t contain any sun protection. Never put moisturiser around your eyes as the thinner skin can easily become overloaded with product and cause blockages that appear as little white spots. The best way to proceed… Identify your skin type - a skincare consultant should be able to help you to do this, or try the test (see 14) - then select a cream that suits your needs.
2. Exfoliating too often / too close to the delicate eye area Over-exfoliating can lead to redness and irritation and constantly stripping your skin can actually make the skin greasy as it overcompensates for lack of oil. Physical exfoliating scrubs that have sharp, uneven grains can tear or damage the skin.
Rather than going for granules and grains, trying non-abrasive exfoliators that use AHA, BHA and fruit acids. This can help prevent sensitive skin from being over-exfoliated. Remember, normal to oily skin only needs exfoliating twice a week.
3. Face mask mistakes
As with moisturisers, select your facemask according to your skin type. For example clay-based masks, or those with ingredients for oily, spotty skin, such as salicylic acid will cause normal-dry skin to flake off. If your skin is in need of moisture, select one for dry skin with skinnourishing and replenishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or vitamin E. Don’t overdo the facemasks either - one a week should be more than enough to keep your skin under control.
4. Rushing the serum stage
Guilty of slapping on your moisturiser moments after applying your serum? Time to stop all that. We need to carefully layer our skincare products like we layer our clothes. When using a serum on the skin, it’s important to let it sink in and dry before applying your moisturiser. Otherwise the concentrated serum gets diluted by the moisturiser meaning your skin doesn’t reap all the benefits.

With recent research from Witch Skincare revealing that 72% of us would feel more confident with clearer skin, it’s plain to see that our complexions are a pretty big deal. You might not even realise your skincare routine is out of touch. Perhaps you weren’t aware that face wipes are too harsh on your delicate eye area or that a foundation without SPF is unforgivable? But now’s your chance to redeem your beauty brownie points with the ultimate good girl skincare routine...
5. Using anti-ageing products too soon
A huge no-no is to use anti-ageing skincare before your skin shows signs of ageing. If you use potent anti-ageing ingredients before your skin needs them, they will either have no effect or a detrimental one. For example retinols are superb for anti-ageing the skin, however if used before they are needed, or in too high a concentration, the skin will literally peel off. Similarly with skin peels – if you use them too early, too frequently or too potent a peel, skin can become very fragile and thin. If you’re not sure when to start using anti-ageing products you can always talk to a dermatologist for advice.
6. Going crazy with retinol
Retinol has been proven to improve skin clarity and texture, promote antipigmentation and treat acne but when starting to use a retinol product, skin needs to gradually acclimatise as vitamin A (retinol) can irritate skin. To build up skin tolerance, allow 3-day intervals between applications for two weeks. Only apply retinol in the evening to minimise light sensitivity. Also ensure you have not been given a product where the concentration is too high if you are younger.
7. Not applying your SPF
Want to look older faster? Didn’t think so. Ignore this rule at your own risk. Come rain or shine, we should all wear SPF during the day as the sun is the biggest cause of wrinkles. The trick is to find a sunscreen that slips elegantly under foundation and moisturiser and becomes a seamless part of your morning routine. Better still; wear a daily moisturiser or moisturising tint that contains an SPF. Then, you don’t have to even think about your SPF application!
8. Using face wipes
They may be the best friend of the girl on the go, but face wipes aren’t the best way to care for your skin. Some face wipes contain harsh chemicals and high levels of alcohol that can dry the skin out. When rubbed vigorously on the skin, particularly around the delicate eye area, they can cause irritation and even stinging or redness. Stripping the skin using harsh ingredients like alcohol can actually not only dry, but cause the skin to become greasy.
9. Sleeping in makeup
Sleeping with dirt, oil and makeup on can cause acne and enlarged pores. This is not the route to being a sleeping beauty! As we sleep at night, our skin repairs itself, so it’s a key time to feed your skin with nourishing skincare products, but only once the canvas is clean. Think of makeup removal as washing away the day’s grime!
10. Slapping on the creams
People tend to slap on creams and rub vigorously, mainly on the cheeks. The pressure, direction and movement should be as below to spread creams evenly: Eyes – apply a small amount using your index finger in a circle around the eye area. Use gentle pressure for this area as the skin is fine and delicate. Face – apply cream from the neck up, using semi-firm upward movements, working against gravity! Never drag skin downwards. Décolletage – People forget the décolletage – use cream here too!
11. Squeezing spots
We know it’s tempting, but this is one skincare sin that you have to stop! Squeezing spots is one of the biggest beauty crimes! Not only can the spot become infected, but you can actually make it bigger and even leave a scar. It can also spread bacteria leading to more spots. Instead, use a spot gel that contains niacinamide (which soothes the skin) and resist picking at it, and it’ll fade on its own. Over-treating the blemish will just irritate your skin, and picking it will cause the oil to spread, and leave you with a nasty scab that’s a lot harder to conceal than a tiny little pimple.
12. Changing products too often
A very common mistake is changing products too often. It’s really important to try a new product for at least 3 months to see the true effect it has on the skin. If a product doesn’t agree with your skin, stop using it immediately. Also incorporate new products slowly - one about every 6 weeks. But do look at your skincare every 6 months - autumn and spring to fit the weather.
13. Forgetting to clean makeup brushes
If using makeup brushes, washing them should be a regular part of your beauty routine. When you use your brushes, bits of makeup, oil, dirt, and even bacteria can get trapped in the bristles. So while it might seem basic, skipping this step can lead to clogged pores and pesky breakouts. Clean makeup brushes weekly… So simple, yet so logical too.
14. Using the wrong products for your skin type
The quickest way to find out your skin type is to wash your face, pat it dry, leave it for 20 minutes, then take this skin test: · Press a piece of tissue on different spots on your face. · The paper will stick if you have oily skin. · If the tissue doesn’t stick you have dry skin. · If it sticks in your T-zone area (forehead, nose and chin), you have combination skin.
15. Not getting enough sleep
You get tired - and so does your skin. Skin repairs itself at night. If you are regularly sleep deprived, your complexion will show it. It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing!
16. Forgetting your eye cream
Eye cream is an essential part of your skincare routine as the skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate. This means that it ages faster than the rest of your face. Try using an eye cream twice a day from your 20s onwards.

11 Winter Hair Colour TIPS & TRENDS
If you love staying on top of hair and beauty trends or you just want to see what’s new in the world of hair, get all the info you need here on winter hair colour tips and trends.
4. DEPOSIT COLOUR
Another way to keep your hair colour going strong is to use a colour-depositing shampoo in between your visits to the salon. Colour-depositing hair products temporarily deposit colour onto your strands after each wash so you’re covered in between touchups.
1. STRAWBERRY BLONDE
When it comes to winter hair colour tips and trends for 2014, everything old is new again! We can only dye our hair so many colours, right? First up in hot hair colour for winter is strawberry blonde. This is an easy transition for darker blonde hair and it really jazzes up your hair without a drastic change. It also complements most skin tones so it’s easy to say yes to strawberry blonde!
5. CHESTNUT BROWN
Chestnut brown hair might seem a little more modest than the others, but it can make just as bold of an impact. Whether you have dark blonde hair or dark brown hair, chestnut brown is a great middleof-the-road hair colour that’s not too dark or too light making it ideal for the wintery months.
2. DARK CHOCOLATE BROWN
Any hair colour name that has the word chocolate in it is a winner in my book. Not only is this shade gorgeous for winter, it’s a perfect shade for the woman who wants a darker hair colour without going full-on black which can be too harsh for some. Try this hair colour with some subtle highlights mixed in and you’ll have a head of alluring, almost-raven hair that begs to be admired.
6. CHERRY COKE
This hair colour wasn’t exactly seen on any runways, but it’s such a captivating colour that I had to show it to you! The Cherry Coke colour is a reddish brown colour that is absolutely beautiful and so striking. This colour is particularly flattering on olive skin tones, although ladies with medium skin tones can certainly rock the heck out of it, too.
3. CINNAMON RED
Another hair colour that looks stunning pretty much any time of the year, but especially in the fall and winter is cinnamon or copper red. It’s deep, warm and so darn ravishing! This is another hair colour that’s really elevated by some soft, face-framing highlights. Cinnamon or copper red is a fab choice for brunettes who want to refresh their hair colour.
7. PRESERVE COLOUR
Now that we’ve discussed some winter hair trends in colour, let’s get into hair care. If you have colourtreated hair, it probably cost you a pretty penny to dye it so it’s of utmost importance to preserve the colour. Look for and use shampoos that are designed to protect colour so they don’t wash away your shade.
9. LAY OFF THE HEAT
8. WASH LESS
Washing your hair every day can be quite a chore, plus you run the risk of your hair colour fading faster. Stick to shampooing every other day. Your hair colour can start to escape as soon as you wet your hair, so with colour-treated hair, less is always more. In addition to looking for a colour-safe shampoo, make sure it’s gentle and doesn’t contain any sulfates or sodium chloride that can strip your colour. BMAG 38
Of course you want to style your freshly coloured hair and make it look all fancy-like. But I must warn you, using too many heat tools on your hair is a big no-no when it comes to keeping your hair colour fresh and vibrant. The heat from blow dryers and similar tools can roughen the hair cuticle making your hair look lifeless. Prevent dull hair colour by using heat tools with tourmaline and ceramic, which can help smooth the cuticle as you use it.
10. HONEY BLONDE
Honey blonde is one of the winter hair trends that’s guaranteed to help you stand out from the crowd. Some might say honey blonde is best for warmer weather, but sporting an unexpected hair hue is fun and refreshing. Don’t feel confined by certain hair colours in certain seasons, it’s your hair after all! There are so many versions of this colour so there’s a shade to suit just about everyone.
11. DEEP CONDITION
Last but not least, deep condition those lovely strands! Hair can get dry in the winter from the drying cold air or the moisture-sucking heater so treat your tresses to a weekly deep conditioning treatment. Also avoid using hot water to rinse your hair. Hot water is said to allow the colour pigments in your hair to escape more easily so stick with lukewarm water if you can.
10 Wonders of Protein Foods
If you’re struggling to get enough protein in your diet you might want to refresh your memory as to why this p-word is so important. Protein can help support your body on so many levels, from boosting your skin health to balancing your metabolism, there’s plenty of reasons to reach for the eggs, cheese and fish. With women not often getting their recommended daily amount, we’ve rounded up the protein facts that every woman needs to know. 3. Know the guidelines For adults, guideline recommendations for protein intake are about 0.4g of protein per pound ideal body weight per day. This means that someone whose ideal weight is 130lbs should consume between about 45-50g of protein a day. Recommended amounts increase in pregnancy and can increase when training or trying to build muscle.
4. Not just for muscles Protein is essential not only for muscles but for all growth and repair in the body. Even when we have stopped growing in height, we need protein for replacing and repairing cells and tissues that have been damaged. This process takes place constantly - for example, the tissue lining the digestive tract is replaced every two to four weeks! This also means that protein is particularly vital for healing from an injury or an operation, for example.
5. Super immunity Protein is used for the formation of antibodies - substances produced by our immune cells to help them identify foreign particles such as bacteria and viruses. So to have a healthy immune system, we need sufficient protein. The human anatomy is mostly made up of proteins - your muscles, your organs and your immune system are all made up of this essential molecule. The body uses these proteins to make specialised particles called amino acids, all of which are vital to human health. The dilemma? Women are often ignoring the advantages and are dismissing protein as an unnecessary supplement. Time to get our protein awareness in check ladies... A great deal of women believe proteins are rich in fats or high in calories compelling them to reduce their protein intake and effectively harming their wellbeing. What may come as a surprise is that vegetables and fruits aren’t far off the calorie radar from protein-rich foods so there’s no reason to disregard this fundamental nutrient from our diets. When women give protein the chop, they fall victim to malnourish their bodies. Spare yourself the diet plan ladies - eating the recommended amount of protein or even doubling up will actually help you melt away the fat even when you’re not active. So with your metabolism buzzing along at high speed that latte can be burnt off without even moving a muscle! You can get proteins from a whole host of foods with the best sources coming from fish, meat, dairy and beans. The cumulative effect of protein has the power to keep you trim. So next time you buy a salad don’t presume that you shouldn’t have anything else. Leafy greens, albeit very nutritious, can’t be compared to a slab of grilled chicken on top. The second your body takes in protein it starts breaking it down, but at a much slower rate than other foods, burning more calories and keeping you fuller for longer. Essentially, we are making poor decisions based on little knowledge of this superpower nutrient. And no, it’s not just for bodybuilders, ladies! Time for a little health ed...
1. It doesn’t make you fat Protein can be used for energy when carbohydrates and fats are not available, but it is not stored as fat unless consumed in excess. Too much is when you’re consuming three times the recommended daily intake, so unless you’re high following an endurance fitness regime, enjoy those protein-packed foods.
2. Full for longer Protein is the answer to help keep a naughty appetite at bay. Protein-rich foods are broken down more slowly and therefore stay in the stomach longer, making us feel fuller. Ensuring we have a serving of protein-rich food (meat, fish, eggs, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds) with every meal can therefore be helpful for controlling appetite and for weight management. BMAG 40
6. Protein helps carry oxygen around the body Haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body in red blood cells, is a protein.
7. Detoxing essential Protein is used by the liver for detoxification. Some of the individual amino acids, the components of protein, are attached to toxins to help excrete them from the body. For this reason, fasting or following a low-protein ‘detox’ diet may not be the best way to support detoxification or cleansing. Hangover cure solved!
8. Brain food Protein supports our brain function and memory. Some of the individual amino acids, such as glycine and serine, act as neurotransmitters - the substances that allow our brain and nerve cells to communicate with each other. Some others are converted to neurotransmitters - for example, tryptophan is converted to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter for mood.
9. Vegans beware Vegans in particular need to pay attention to getting enough protein. With few exceptions, protein is found in the highest concentration in animal foods: an average serving of chicken breast can contain around 25 to 30g of protein, whereas an average serving of brown rice will provide only around 6g of protein, and 100g of cooked lentils around 9g. Vegans should aim to eat a good variety of pulses (beans and lentils), nuts and seeds in addition to vegetables and whole grains every day.
10. Too much can be bad While insufficient protein may cause problems, too much protein is not good either. A very high level of protein intake over a significant period of time may cause harm to the kidneys, although some sources say this is only likely to be a problem if there is already kidney disease present. Amounts that could potentially cause a problem are protein intakes of over around 35% of calorie intake, or around 175 to 200g of protein a day for a 2000–2500 calorie diet. However, these amounts would normally only be achieved on a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, by someone who is eating several large servings of meat every day, or by individuals using a lot of protein supplements for training or muscle gain.
The key is in the balance ladies! Will you be rethinking your low-protein diet now?
7 Ways to Keep Your Heart Healthy & Happy in 2014 Your heart is one impressive organ pumping 2,000 gallons of blood per day. As women age, we are far more likely to develop heart disease than breast cancer (3 times more likely!) yet most women don’t do enough to safeguard their heart. It’s important to be aware of what you can do to look after your heart and seeing as it’s actually pretty easy to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle we had to share these 7 ways to improve your heart health... Dr Sundip Patel, Consultant Cardiologist at London Bridge Hospital, says: “There is a myth that women are less likely to be troubled by heart disease and its complications, but studies suggest that women indeed suffer more from heart events (such as heart attacks) than men, especially after the menopause.” And not only is it more common for women to suffer from heart disease, but our symptoms are often overlooked, as they’re not the ‘classic’ symptoms we’d normally expect. He says, “rather than the classical symptoms of chest discomfort, women may present with neck pain, back or tummy discomfort.” So what exactly can you do to make sure your heart is in good working order? Below, the cardiac experts at London Bridge Hospital take us through the key steps for achieving a healthy and happy heart...
Indulge in the Mediterranean Diet
The Mediterranean diet has been known to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and even Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a real supercharged way of eating nutritionally. Dr Sundip Patel says: “A Mediterranean diet will ideally be low in saturated fat, cholesterol and salt, which can push up blood pressure levels - a silent killer in terms of heart disease and stroke in women as well as men. The diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, fish and whole-grains. From microwave meals, fast food and even homemade recipes Western diets are so often smothered in salt. In a Mediterranean diet, salt is replaced with herbs, a rule Mediterranean folk have stuck to for many, many years.” This diet is the go-to healthy heart-eating plan and with just a few tweaks in your food choices you can enjoy the benefits of optimal heart health too.
A scrumptious bowl of freshly cooked oatmeal with a sprinkle of nuts and dash of honey is a great way to start off your day. Oats are scientifically proven to reduce cholesterol levels by 8-23% - a good excuse to pile on the oats from now on. Eating whole-grains for breakfast can also help to lower cholesterol, helping your heart in the long term.
Reduce Stress with R&R
Some much-needed R&R is vital in keeping your spirits up. So put down the work, put your feet up and turn on the TV - it’s time for some destressing ‘me time’. If you’re feeling the stress of all the things you have going on Dr Sundip says: “Fresh air will help your mood. In fact, low mood can be (directly and indirectly) associated with heart disease.” And since stress is a leading cause of death, there’s no time to mess around. Try simple things like sneaking in a snooze during the day or enjoying snuggle time with your pooch (it’s really proven to reduce stress!)
30-Minute Workouts
Quit Smoking
You’ve heard it all before and we’ll tell you again. Doing 30 minutes of exercise at least three times a week will help keep your heart healthy. Period.
Dr Sundip Patel says: “In regards to increasing the risk of heart disease, smoking is worse for women than men. Therefore women are advised to quit smoking or at least reduce the number of cigarettes they have.”
“A condition called ‘Metabolic Syndrome’ tends to have more of an adverse heart outcome on women than men. In this condition, there is a cluster of features, which include: central obesity - increased fat deposition in and around the abdomen, high blood sugars and high blood fats (triglycerides as well as cholesterol). Women should therefore exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week. A brisk walk is just as good as expensive gym membership,” says Dr Sundip Patel.
We know quitting the cigarettes isn’t easy, but if you yearn for longevity then making the decision to be smoke-free can be more than just life changing.
And studies show that if you change your ways before the age of 30, dying from a tobacco-related disease is close to none. Kick this habit’s butt and try new ways to stop smoking such as joining a support group or trying out nicotine replacement therapy. You’ll be glad you did.
Reduce Red Meat
It may come as a surprise but regular red meat-eaters are 30% more likely to suffer from a cardiovascular attack such as a stroke or heart attack. The consumption of red meat causes your body to create a new heart disease-causing mechanism called TMAO, which essentially leads to poor heart health. Consultant Cardiologist Dr Jonathan Byrne says: “To maintain a healthy heart keep your saturated fat intake down, red meat should be eaten ideally less than twice per week.” Or better yet, not at all. If you carnivores really can’t give up all together, save the steak and lamb for the occasional naughty treat.
Savour Fish & Whole-Grain Oats
Savour your fish and whole-grain oats. These healthy food groups are superstar foods to get your health back on track. Fish is a great source of essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as omega-3 and omega-6. In fact, fish can ultimately help to reduce your risk of a heart attack whilst also improving your chances of surviving one. BMAG 42
Exercise plays a huge part in making your heart muscles stronger, so we say, get off your bum and start moving. Even a short walk to the shop or a sprint up the stairs will help as long as you tally up those minutes.
Do Short, Intense Workouts
Interval or circuit-based training programmes are ideal to get your heart pumping while helping reduce your blood pressure and cholesterol. The idea that to improve your heart health lies within a hardcore workout are silly old wives’ tales, according to Jack Elliott-Frey, Personal Trainer and Co-Founder of Frey Fitness. This type of exercise can actually do the exact opposite and even lead to muscle tissue scarring. So don’t go workout crazy! Jack says: “Start with an interval or a circuit-based training programme, which can help improve muscular strength, endurance and heart health. For example, you want to raise your heart rate up to your anaerobic threshold for 20 to 30 seconds (work period), followed by a 90 second recovery period (rest period). For those who don’t have access to a gym, or aren’t at a level where this is applicable, simply walking can also count - by upping the pace to a ‘power walking’ speed or using streets which are sloped, it is still a method that keeps you on your toes and helps make exercise fun.”
7 Ways to Start the New Year on a Positive Note Are you looking for ways to start the New Year off right? It’s actually an easier process than you may think! The sooner that you get started, the faster you’ll jump start a successful and happy year! Check out seven key ways to start the New Year off on the right foot. 1. REVAMP YOUR SOCIAL NETWORK PROFILES Go through your followers and friends. Have you spoken to your Facebook friends within a year or two? If not, delete them. If neither of you have made an effort to contact each other, it shows that you’ve grown apart, so go ahead and delete them. You can also go through old photos (such as ones of your ex). It’s also a good way of getting over a break up and starting anew. One of the most important ways to start the New Year off on a positive note is to get rid of anything that is holding you back (and ex-partners can do just that!) so that you can start afresh. 2. DONATE YOUR CLOTHES (OR SHOES, OR JEWELLERY…) Go through your closet. More than likely, there are shirts you loved, but don’t fit in anymore or that jumper your grandmother gave you but you never wore. Instead of throwing them in the trash, donate them to a local charity. 3. MAKE A RESOLUTION (AND KEEP IT!) Make a resolution. I understand it’s not as easy as it sounds, but I’m not saying to make a life-altering change that requires a whole lot of effort and stress on your part. Make a resolution to smile more or discover a particular inspirational quote and make that your mantra whenever times get tough. 4. TRY SOMETHING NEW Whether it is attending a Zumba class instead of your normal Yoga class or learning to play a new instrument, the key here is to try something you haven’t tried before. It could even be something small, like trying a new recipe or a new do-it-yourself project. 5. STRESS LESS Find something you enjoy doing in order to release the stress of your daily routine. Whether it is taking a short run, sitting down to read a good book with a hot cup of tea or sleeping late on the weekends, the main idea is to relax from all the hustle and bustle of your busy life. 6. UPDATE YOUR MAKEUP It doesn’t have to be something completely outrageous or out of your comfort zone, but a change in your makeup routine may add a new sparkle to your usual look. Invest in a new lip colour or eye shadow palette. 7. UPDATE YOUR ELECTRONICS Go through your files and delete any unnecessary documents. Organise them into folders where you can easily access them. Also, delete any applications you don’t use (on your phone, computer, tablet, etc). You can also conduct a disc defragmentation or disc clean up on your computer, which may make it run smoother and faster as well.
The Best Coloured Wedding Dresses from the Catwalk
White has always been the most popular choice of colour for brides when it comes to choosing their wedding gown, but some celebrities have ditched the traditional look and donned colourful dresses instead. While Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway opted for two-toned pink and white numbers, Avril Lavigne and Sarah Jessica Parker went completely opposite and wore jet black on their big day.
1. Oscar de la Renta’s
2. Vera Wang’s
Blush pink has been a go-to shade for various celebrity brides, with Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Biel and Portia de Rossi among others choosing a petal pink coloured gown.
Apart from Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway, other famous brides who have walked down the aisle in deeper shades of pink or red include Melissa Gilbert and Julianne Moore.
Oscar de la Renta’s collection features the same shade, and if you’re after a more wintery look, his pale blue number could be an option.
If you’re after the same look, Vera Wang recently unveiled her latest bridal collection in New York, showcasing a series of fuchsia, scarlet and coral gowns, many of which were adorned with large flowers and full skirts.
3. Carla Rodriguez’s
4. Romona Keveza’s
5. Vera Wang’s
When Elizabeth Taylor wed her co-star Richard Burton for the first time in 1964, the Golden Age actress donned a yellow chiffon dress. Five decades later and actress Amber Tamblyn opted for a canary yellow gown for her 2012 nuptials.
Metallic shades have always been reserved for the more daring brides. Reality TV star Cynthia Bailey tied the knot in a striking couture, grey gown while Dita Von Teese had a dramatic royal purple dress made for her by Vivienne Westwood.
Avril Lavigne, Sarah Jessica Parker and Ellen Pompeo have all exchanged vows in black numbers, but for brides who want just a hint of black on their wedding day, Vera Wang’s Spring/ Summer collection has a range of ebonyinspired choices.
Looking back at the catwalks of 2013 bridal fashion shows, it seems these fashionforward celebrities had all the reason not to wear white.

How Should a Man’s Overcoat Fit? Learn all of the stylish details of a man’s winter overcoat Like most men’s clothing, no garment will fit you as precisely as something that is custom-built for your body by a tailor. You may also have luck in buying a suit “off the rack” and bringing it to a quality tailor to fit to your body. But man’s overcoat is a little trickier and you’ll need to make a conscious effort to avoid having a jacket that fits you like a pair of skinny jeans!
To keep you warm during the winter months, an overcoat needs to be as close to perfect for your body as can be. Too small and you won’t fit the overcoat over your clothes properly, too big and there’s potential for cold air to travel through your layers and give you the chills.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY OVERCOAT IS THE RIGHT FIT?
Your overcoat should fit squarely on your shoulders. There should not be too much room around your chest, if there is it’s a telltale sign that your coat needs altering.
WHAT KIND OF MATERIAL IS A MAN’S OVERCOAT MADE OF?
You’ll want to make sure your men’s overcoat is made from cashmere wool. It’s extremely warm and also very masculine.
WHAT LENGTH OVERCOAT DO YOU WANT?
Picking the proper size overcoat will separate the gentleman from every other man. Full-length and ¾-length overcoats are the two typical varieties of men’s overcoat types.
WHAT IS A FULL-LENGTH MEN’S OVERCOAT?
The full-length jacket should fall just above your ankles, but be sure to monitor the bottom of the coat as rain and dirt can accumulate there during a messy winter season. A full-length men’s overcoat is probably best worn by a man with a height advantage. A full-length overcoat will often highlight a shorter guy’s height. It’s also a classic, more old school length.
WHAT IS A ¾-LENGTH MEN’S OVERCOAT?
A younger, more modern look for a men’s overcoat is the ¾-length look. This kind of coat should fall just above your knees. The ¾-length coat, especially with some quality alterations, should give you a more precise fit and a more confident look.
WHAT IS A DOUBLE-BREASTED MEN’S OVERCOAT?
A double-breasted overcoat will require you to place one side of the coat atop the other in order to button it closed. Double rows of buttons meeting a single row of buttonholes often mark doublebreasted overcoats.
WHAT IS A SINGLE-BREASTED OVERCOAT?
You can spot a single-breasted overcoat by the narrow overlaps of buttons and buttonholes. Single-breasted men’s overcoats are practical enough that you can wear one with a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers or atop a suit. BMAG 48
Split-Level Homes Split-level homes aren’t the most popular. Many people are confused by their value and many people are confused on how to separate their entertaining spaces from their lounging spots. But in actuality, these unique homes have a personality that traditional homes can never attain. Let’s take just a peek at a variety of split-level home ideas to get your brainstorming and deciding on whether or not this layout is right for you.
1. Formal & Cosy Spaces We love how this room is split in the great room area. It’s essentially already split for you to decide which is the formal space and which is the cosier, homier space. Just decorate to your liking!
BMAG 50
4. Rustic & Luxury
2. Make it Modern Use the split to your advantage. Incorporate the stairs by creating a slick and posh space that incorporates your love of modern, contemporary styles. Although this house is of vintage value, we love how the pathway leading to the dining room is highlighted in such a chic way.
3. Enter the Mudroom Sometimes the splits come right at the entryway. Don’t let this splitting foyer go to waste, create a practical mudroom in its place!
If your split happens to be in a very large, spacious area then you’re in luck. It’s the most advantageous spot to have it and you can easily create a room that’s made to feel like you’re in some luxury loft in the mountains or in the city, based on your decor.
5. Stick with a Theme
6. Switch the Staircase
Just like we said previously, if your split happens in the entryway, then make things cohesive. Stick with a theme and make sure when your guests look up and down, everything goes together and meshes well.
For a funkier look and more appealing style, trade out traditional stairs for something a bit more artistic. Instantly this split-level space turns into something more trendy and contemporary.
7. Create a Moment Right when your guests walk in, create something special that connects the bottom level to the top. Whether it’s a collage of golden frames or vintage photos, it’ll help to make it cohesive and more in the now.
8. Continuous Floors One way to keep a split-level room from feeling dated is to keep a continuous flooring detail. Whether it’s hardwood or carpet, don’t have three different materials coating the floor and making your family and guests feel like they’ve been sent through a time machine.
10. The Family’s Personality 9. Bare it All Don’t rely on accents; instead rely on your structure and design. If you’re creating or redesigning your split-level space, then make sure your staircases are art and designworthy without anything to make them look or feel better.
You can always go with something easy and simple, like capturing the family’s personality with the entryway. Hang up your favourite painting, paint the stairs and show off a playful rug. Your guests will feel instantly at home and your entryway will never look dated, it’ll look like you!

Mustard & Gold Accents Ideas & Inspiration
Who doesn’t love a bright and shining room? Whether it’s your kitchen or personal, home office, there’s something special about a space glittery in gold. That’s why the combination of mustard yellows and gold accents can take a space from dull to glamorous in the blink of an eye. If you like bold statement, feminine touches and glowing styles them mustard and gold accents may be just what you need to redesign and redecorate!
1. Modern Class In a modern, contemporary dining room, gold and mustard accents will add a Victorian touch, when used right, of course. The mix of old-age spirit combined with such sleek lines makes for a sophisticated, easy space.
5. Dream Suite Sometimes just one accent is all you need to make a room come full circle… or two. The mustard chair and the golden branches make this room magical.

2. Subtle Sunshine This child’s room is funky, eclectic and relaxed. But it’s still glowing with a sunshiny feel based on its mustard-golden hues.
3. Traditional Happy If you’re drawn to more homey and cosier of style, don’t fuss; even these bright hues can come together to make a welcoming room full of happy cheer. The mustard tones down the gold while still making a glowing, sunny decor.
4. Glam Squad Who knew mustard could be so glamorous? Paired with gold it emits such a shining, glowing escapes for even the most feminine, frilly and posh of home offices!
6. Hotel Inspired Who gets some of their best decor inspiration from some of the amazing hotels they’ve stayed at? Mustard and gold, go well together and glow well together, so take the hint and try it out at home!
7. Funky Spaces We love when people use mustard as a foundation for a bohemianinspired space. The brightness allows for the more saturated and richer colours to shine bright.
8. Masculine Energy It’s okay to go with something more dramatic and bold. With a bit of masculine infusion and the right furniture, you can make quite the statement.
9. Washed Out Use some muted shades of mustard and create a soft and subtle bedroom. It’s relaxing, feminine and style but still very much fashion-forward with outside-the-box flair. Of course, the golden accents help things glow!
10. Chic RoomS Warm and inviting, this perfect mix of mustard and gold accents works so well in this cool, neutral space. Since the accents are so chic and perfectly put together, it instantly creates an equally chic space.

New Year 2014 Horoscopes
JANUARY 2014
CAPRICORN Amazingly close relationships with loved ones spin delight right through this year. Close to home is where your heart is. Even those who still seek love feel comfortable and have moments of great content. Making your life in your own image is the aim. You know what you want and need to aim high, but if you fall a little short, you should still be happy with the result! Ambition takes a back seat to a need for peace of mind, as it should. When it comes to career moves, what you want may not be what you need for happiness so allow yourself some flexibility. Let your lighter side enjoy the summer and autumn. Young people give a fresh perspective, a new way of looking at life and a happy heart is soon full of delight! Friends will notice another side of you come winter. This is when you seek to bring out the more spiritual and artistic side of your character. These are areas that are normally given secondary consideration. Right now, though, there is a desire to seek new ways to live your life. Of course you still have strong ambitions but they are becoming more balanced with home life.
AQUARIUS A good, well-balanced year ahead gives you plenty of time to relax. Aquarians can have their fill of love and learn to enjoy different aspects of romance. A cheerful and happy soul is very attractive, especially to those seeking someone special. Don’t expect all encounters to be lasting, however. You are being encouraged to find your happiness through being open-minded and adventurous. Existing relationships strengthen as you find your way forward emotionally. Keep a balance between work and leisure in the second half of the year with the emphasis on communications with colleagues. There may be some bumpy times here that you can smooth over with a calm approach. When life gets busy, resist the urge to cut corners either at work or home. Words are cheap but the wrong ones this winter could see you in hot water. Be discreet and if you are unsure of a situation, investigate. If you are expecting a change or promotion at work, be patient. Maybe the time is not right in financial terms for your boss; so don’t take it to heart. Instead, plan to make moves to learn more about your job and how technology can help and bring your ideas to the attention of someone in charge. There is much to gain by being one step ahead.
PISCES It is a big year for learning new things, and this applies as much to people as work. Gaining knowledge in both areas brings chances to get ahead. Keep an open mind and constantly look for opportunities. Home life is important and you are urged to consider at length any move or agreement. Act rashly and you could regret it. It is not all sober thought, however. The summer encourages you to get out and play, exploring new things and people. A hobby can bring passionate contact but don’t necessarily expect new love to last forever. Enjoy each moment for its own worth. Make this a year of realising more of your potential. There are many talents to develop and many lives to touch. Some form of voluntary or community work is on offer in the autumn. Don’t dismiss it out of hand. Give it a try. Normally you don’t have much time to study how people ‘tick’. Well, this could be your chance to learn something about human nature (including your own!) Cash flow can be erratic but you are still looking for that long-term security. Some ‘quick fixes’ may be necessary but should not be considered an answer. When seeking out big household items, look for bargains. Make being thrifty a choice, not just a necessity.
ARIES
Aries, you really will be springing into action as this year begins! Communications are buzzing and life runs fast, just as you like it. Although there is a strong emphasis on family and friends, this is a year for you to blossom personally. A steep learning curve at work brings satisfaction and leads the way to more cash. Although there are times of restlessness, this can be balanced with exercise and a good diet. Romance runs a thread through the whole year, bringing new influences and strengthening existing relationships. There is something about you that is fresh and inspiring. Partners see about you a kind of innocence that they want to protect. There is the need to jump into situations with both feet and heart, regardless of the cost. If your sense of adventure tempts you to take on too much, remember that it is a good idea to take a practical approach. Plan carefully to stay ahead of your personal needs. As the autumn comes there is something to learn from the past. Extra energy comes from living in the present but there is nothing wrong with slowing down from time to time. See where you are. Ask any questions about where you are going and then get on with life.
TAURUS A boost to finances early in the year gives a sense of optimism. Doors are open that would have been closed before. This period dwindles towards autumn so make the most of any opportunities to get a head start. Family and friends become especially important as you aim to include them more in your life. Those who value your friendship may have particular need of it in the months to come. Taking a practical approach and not overstretching your resources is the best approach. It is much easier to help others if you first consider yourself. Any insecurity will show itself by the tendency to hold on to things and people that no longer give real support, so be prepared to give some of these things to charity or take a step back from people who drain your spirit. Love and romance revolve mainly around established relationships or the beginnings of them, as you are not in a flighty frame of mind this year. Long-term satisfaction is the aim and as close ties become closer, your peace of mind increases. Even so, your more adventurous side demands travel or changes that could be quite spontaneous. Perhaps that is just what you need to stimulate ideas and your imagination!
GEMINI
CANCER This is a year of celebration and good fortune. Loveable people are often at your side as your enthusiasm for life attracts like-minded folk in droves. For this to take off, however, you must make an effort. Get out and keep talking as finding out about others gives you a wonderful insight into their feelings and needs. The summer brings a dynamic character into your life who may be a little bit demanding. Spend less time with them and more with your friends to keep a balance. Seek romance with a softcentred individual. If you go for looks in a lover, it could bring disappointment. A good relationship needs effort. With a big emphasis on your personal life, business may just plod along. Perhaps you can involve your partner to bring up fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Likewise, a trip abroad fires up those little grey cells! One good idea is all you need to set the cash flowing. The autumn demands that you take care over legal matters and that you are sure to read that small print. Cash is not king but it helps life run smoothly.
LEO Seek out the wise and supportive this spring. Why bother with negative people and situations when you have the chance to bloom? Always aim to take the path of progress, especially in building good and long-term relationships. A soul mate is close so appreciate who and what you have. Those with an open mind will find opportunities. There is no need to compromise in this area and certainly don’t accept anything that is not in your best interests! Although day-to-day living is busy, especially in the summer, give yourself time for thought. Look at what you believe in and check that you are on the right path. Be yourself, especially around loved ones. Remember that important thoughts are there to be shared. Yes, really! The autumn brings changeable moods, but this is natural for your sign at this time. Again, share those hopes and dreams. Admit your disappointments. Being vulnerable at times only serves to make you more loveable, so go with it. Being supportive of others emotionally helps to redress any imbalance. See how appreciated you are and how much there is to look forward to. Planning travel with a loved one reminds you of unfulfilled ambitions. There is always time, you know.
VIRGO
LIBRA
SCORPIO Be lucky as the year begins and through the spring. Use your enthusiasm to make the most of opportunities and show others that you are serious. Chances come your way that seem charmed, but they are real and need to be made the most of! As money comes in, try to hold on to some of it, as the temptation to spend will be strong. Finding a new position on the work front, maybe even in an existing company, brings changes. These may at first seem a step back but give it time. Sometimes going in a different direction fires the imagination and sense of purpose. Aim to be more flexible in all areas to sidetrack stress and avoid burning yourself out intellectually by working with others. Take note of their needs but avoid getting into a ‘tug of war’ situation. You do not need so much to control your emotions as to channel them. Friendships have the best chance to develop if you give them a chance. Being overly attracted by appearance can be a mistake. Go, instead, for those who have bothered to develop their personalities and have fun! Work is not the be all and end all. Rediscover a sense of fun by being in younger company and letting your hair down. Love your life!
SAGITTARIUS
Home life and cash dominate the year. Getting organised is important, especially if you plan to travel. Indeed, travel in the spring is not only likely but desirable. It is a time to seek and find things out. Someone from another culture has knowledge that intrigues you. A hunger to learn by chance sees the opportunity for increased wealth. This will satisfy your need for the better things in life. Having said that, Libra, it is also a year in which you de-clutter. Spirituality becomes more important and having the time to appreciate nature. With a sharp mind and infinite curiosity, it is possible to really open up your life. You could be lucky and find love but it may be fleeting. Even so, every chance for happiness should be taken and enjoyed. Basking in someone else’s glory in the autumn sparks some ambitions of your own. At this time working with a partner seems the best option, especially financially. Check the small print in any agreements and then get on with it. Keeping up with digital media brings an opportunity to use your artistic skills and to develop them further. Your most important communications should be face to face rather than through media - much more effective emotionally.
The year begins with a dynamic boost to optimism and prospects. Perhaps a change at work brings with it new opportunities or you decide on learning something new. Whatever it is, your brain buzzes with ideas through the spring. Make it a time when you take control of your money. Use it wisely and also save. Sometimes this is best done by simply spending less when tempted! Treat your health with respect and it will work well for you. Get any checks that are needed to keep on top form. People and communications bring the most happiness and satisfaction and the more you do for others, the more you will prosper in spirit. Looking for someone special? The summer brings the best chance. Meet like-minded individuals in unusual places. Although people come and go from your life, you enjoy the novelty. There is little you like more than constant mental stimulation and fresh physical company. You will probably use your media less for social contact, preferring the raw joy of live interactions. Approaching a flirtatious autumn, you need to seek out companions who are both intelligent and attractive and what speed does not bring to you, patience will. Discovering a new talent may surprise you, but it shouldn’t. You have still yet to use your full potential. Both home and career are in the spotlight this year. Some opportunities will not come as easily for some time so make the most of what is on offer. Cash should flow more easily but make sure that it is mostly flowing in, not out! Look out for big promises that come to nothing. Your good judgment of character serves you well here! Talking of promises, those you make to yourself are very important, especially if they concern your health. Take care of what you have in any area that is essential. Romance is never far away but you will have to reach out for it. Make things happen rather than sit and wait in this area. Meetings through your work bring the most satisfaction when summer throws up someone on your wavelength. This person brings new energy and inspiration through example. There could also be some romance, even if it is fleeting. Enjoy! When thinking of travel, short breaks can be as enjoyable as long stretches away. There is no need to splash the cash if you can take a working holiday or do a house swap. Technicolor dreams bring flashes of inspiration during the autumn. Following the progress of a relative gives your imagination a boost.
Embrace life, love and new friends this year! Romance is more likely if you resist having preconceived ideas. When going out to learn something new, perhaps at a course, develop friendships. If these are with much younger and much older people, so much the better! Get to know others in a targeted and even intense way. This approach brings you understanding that has perhaps been lacking in the past. People are not things that happen to you, they are influences that you can control. Take charge with forward planning and charm. Who could resist your smile? Be serious about work and money. You cannot afford to play fast and loose with your responsibilities! Keeping spending under control brings satisfaction. A sense of your own worth comes from realising your talents and developing them. With the emphasis on home through summer and autumn, you get an amazing amount done. When reading about people and subjects that interest you, inspiration can strike. Use it, develop it and have fun with it. This winter, wisdom comes through play. The outdoors is attractive, especially when in loving company. A social group may seem tame now but it brings a kind of stability. BMAG 65
