Photos by ulookfierce.com 14-year old Julia Horne was crowned Dream Girl of the Year 2014 and also won the award of Miss Vogue during the 9th anniversary of the competition held at the John Mackintosh Hall on Friday 28th February. Julia who enjoys dance and gymnastics and aspires to become successful in the fashion industry, and was crowned for the first time on a throne by Dream Girl of the Year 2013 Kathryn Lima. Alanna Bonavia was elected 1st Princess and crowned by last year’s 1st Princess Gianna Hermida whilst Aryanne Brier was chosen 2nd Princess and also won the Miss People’s Choice Award voted by the public and crowned by last year’s 2nd Princess Lois Clark.

Other awards presented by Miss Glamour 2013 Tessa Britto were given on the night. Saray Nunez won the awards of Miss Friendship voted by all the contestants and Miss Best Effort, which was chosen by the organisers. Miss Cover Girl chosen by the official photographer Ulookfierce.com was awarded to Sarie-Anne Ressa. Miss Catwalk was awarded to Alexandra Ballantine and Miss Elegant to Monique Ignacio. Just like all the other contestants mentioned above, Destiny Attias, Tyreesha Ballester, Jade Hazelton and Gianna Romero did their family, friends and most importantly themselves every bit proud as throughout the evening they conducted themselves in a confident, elegant and graceful manner. The difficult choice was put in the hands of the judges: Miss Glamour 2004 Samantha Enriles, Miss Glamour 2010 Kylie Lavagna, Miss Gibraltar 2012 Jessica Baldachino, Dream Girl of the Year 2009 Kianna Costa and professional photographer Marea Thompson. This year’s beauty pageant saw eleven girls competing for the popular title of Dream Girl of the Year 2014. After 8 weeks of hard work, rehearsal after rehearsal, trying to perfect those routines and catwalks, the day had finally arrived. Once again Glamour Creations achieved another full house, watched by thrilled spectators and as always Glamour Creations never seems to disappoint when it comes to a masterpiece production. Dream Girl of the Year 2014 opened with the contestants performing and then the audience met them one by one as the girls got the chance to give their initial impression to the judges and got to introduce themselves. Holding the microphone for the evening was compere Andy Coumbe. Each contestant stepped up to the microphone in a very organised and strategic manner, while the other girls continued their walk. They announced their contestant number, name, age and sponsor. In this part of the show you were able to see each girl’s confidence, poise, style, charisma and personality coming through. While the girls were backstage transforming their outfits for the next part of the competition, Urban Dance kept the audience entertained with their energetic and vibrant dance pieces, which definitely heightened the crowd and even got some people dancing in their seats. They performed four pieces during the show, ‘Wings’, ‘Hip Hop Mix’, ‘Zombies’ and ‘One Direction’. The audience was also mesmerised by the big voice of Tiffany Ferrary as she sang two songs, ‘Lifted’ and ‘Telling You’. Tiffany who was given her first big break with Glamour Creations at the 2009 Miss Glamour contest, had a chat with compare Andy Coumbe on her successful audition to participate at the Wembley Arena this year. Glamour Creations are proud to have given this little lady with the big voice her initial break and wish her every success in her progress. Keeping the ambience going, five girls named Erin Valverde, Sara Faraj, Ruth Jacques, Molly Gill and Amy Bonavia performing by the name of Soundcheck sang ‘Wrecking Ball’. Coming back to the girls, the Miss Vogue Competition was the last time we were to see the girls in the first half. This gave the contestants the opportunity to create their own outfits and allowed them to show off their true personality. In a mixture of different styles the contestants paraded on stage to impress the judges. At the start of the second half of the show we saw the contestants competing for the Miss Catwalk award and later on we saw all eleven girls with their unique and stunning evening dresses take onto the stage in the Miss Elegant competition. All the girls looked relaxed and did a fantastic job by impressing the judges in all the routines with their poise, catwalk, confidence and elegance. This was the last time we saw the contestants before the verdict by the judges was delivered. And finally the moment everyone had been waiting for. As with every beauty pageant, there can only be one winner, and after all the hard work, effort and determination by all the girls, contestant number 5 Julia Horne was the lucky girl who was crowned Dream Girl of the Year 2014. Her years’ reign sees her working closely with Glamour Creations and B Magazine for the next 12 months. BMAG 9

7 Ways to

Look Thinner in 24 Hours Without a sniff of cabbage soup or weird pills, it is absolutely possible to find ways to look thinner in 24 hours. There are multiple reasons for needing to look slim, pronto. Parties, interviews, dates… all of these things can creep up unexpectedly. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to look thinner in 24 hours. 1. LEARN NOT TO SLOUCH One of the easiest ways to look thinner in 24 hours is to learn not to slouch. By throwing your shoulders back and sucking in your stomach, you can look taller. When your weight isn’t evenly distributed across your body, you look heavier than you actually are. Before your big event, practice not slouching. Trust me, even if you feel as though you don’t slouch, you probably do!

2. WEAR THE RIGHT SIZED BRA From uni-boobs to quadra-boobs, poor fitting bras can give you the type of uneven bulk that makes you look bigger than you are. Quite a few of us are guilty of wearing the wrong sized bra. Before your big event, head out to a store and get yourself measured. Invest a little time in finding bras of different shapes. After a little persistence, you can find one that caters to your boobies just perfectly.

3. TRY SPANX Okay, Spanx ain’t exactly sexy. However, they can smooth you out and knock off a good inch or two from your waist and hips. They save you from sucking in your stomach, which gives you a massive dose of confidence. I highly recommend trying the Spanx tops. Huge Bridget-style pants tend to roll down, which can soon look ridiculous.

4. GO GOLDEN Tanning instantly makes you look slimmer. It is a great way to elongate your legs, which is fantastic news for when you are wearing a short dress. Now I am not suggesting you hit the sun beds here. In fact, if you want to age gracefully and avoid skin cancer, you’ll stay well clear of them! Instead, invest in a decent fake tan that will match your skin tone. Unless you are particularly adept at fake tan applications, I’d suggest getting a professional to spray tan you!

5. WEAR YOUR HAIR UP Manipulating the right updo can lead to a taller and slimmer look. A failsafe way to achieve this is to jazz up a ponytail. Pull your hair up, dress it with some sort of band, and let a few strands around your face. This leaves you looking taller and thinner. The same effect isn’t experienced with buns and the like, so stick with a ponytail.

6. DE-BLOAT When you retain water and bloat even just a little, you can look as much as 10 pounds heavier. I once read somewhere that you need to lose 10 pounds to drop a dress size. Therefore, if you can de-bloat before an event, you can look a dress size smaller! So how do you achieve this actually? Ditch anything gaseous, cut back on salt, and drink water like the world’s about to run dry. You’ll be peeing for your country, but you will banish that bloat and look thinner as a result.

7. THROW IN A FEW TONING EXERCISES Toning exercises are never useless, even when you have just 24 hours to go. It’s often our stomachs that leave us feeling large, which is why crunching your way through an hour or so can help you look and feel slimmer. To make your exercises more effective, use hand weights or a kettle bell. Also, don’t stop at 24 hours; keep up with your new exercises for good measure! BMAG 26

Okay, so there is an eighth tip I need to throw in: look confident. When you are feeling under confident, you never look your best. When you can stand there, smile, and have a laugh, you will naturally look fantastic.

OSTEOPATHY OSTEOPATHY IS BASED ON THREE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPALS: A person’s health is under the influence of its body and mind. The body’s structures (muscles, bones and nerves) and the body’s functions (digestion, breathing) are closely related. The body has a natural tendency to heal itself. Each individual is unique and carries the traces of different wounds and emotions suffered during the course of life. Our posture adapts to our exterior and interior environments as well as our life experiences. The role of an osteopath is to ensure that the muscle and skeletal system is in symbiosis with the body’s physiology. Problems manifesting at a muscle and skeletal level can generate nervous, circulatory, digestive or hormonal dysfunctions and vice versa. The body has a marvellous adaptation mechanism and powers of tissue regeneration. The problem arises when this capacity for regeneration and adaptation finds itself overloaded due to the sum of accumulated physical, emotional and nervous tensions. Is at the moment that pain suddenly starts to be felt that an osteopath can help. Within these three fundamental principles the osteopath will use different approaches according to each patient. The range of techniques applied by an osteopath is very wide and range from vertebrae or internal organ manipulation to more subtle techniques such as Craniosacral techniques.

HOW DOES THE BODY WORK

I. – The origin of a mechanical tension

When a person receives a physical shock, at the moment of a fall or an accident a muscular, bone, or ligament injury takes place, and the person will unconsciously adopt a compensatory posture in order to minimise pain. This new posture will generate new tensions. For example, when a person has the cruciate ligaments broken in the knee, or a foot fracture, this person will transfer weight to the other leg. The part of the body that received the trauma, having suffered a tissue disorganisation or from not being used correctly will create in an area of restricted mobility, this area is known as the area of “primary” tension. This primary tension will have a domino effect upon other parts of the body that were not affected, possibly altering its function with the appearance of pain or inflammation with the passage of time. Thus a person with a knee problem will disrupt the balance between the right and left of the body and will unconsciously make the back work in an unbalanced manner creating pain up to the neck level.

II. -The importance of the nervous tension

At the moment of any traumatism (impacts, car accidents, falls, surgery and fractures) the nervous systems receives the information that damage has been caused in the tissue and starts protecting it. Until this stored information in the nervous system has not been liberated by a therapist, even if the original pain has disappeared, the patient will continue protecting this area unconsciously, altering posture, and preventing a complete recovery.

III- Treatment

An osteopath will localise the areas of “primary” tension in the patient, which were the cause of tissue and nervous disorganisation. The osteopath will relax these areas by re-establishing the tissue and nervous balance so both systems can eliminate the compensations. A visit to an osteopath is highly recommended after a traumatism has occurred in order to avoid the creation of compensations at a tissue or nervous level (fractures should be seen 60 days after they occurred or when the plaster cast is removed).

Article based on clinical observations. For more information on Craniosacral Osteopathy contact Geoffrey Wattinne on +350 200 599 55 or visit www.osteopatiadelsol.com BMAG 28

Ways to look beautiful without makeup do exist and they are possible, for anyone. Have you ever met someone who said that they never leave the house without makeup, even if they’re just going to the grocery store? Some women are scared to be seen with a bare face, while others think that they look terrible without the full works. Not only is that not true, but there are plenty of ways to look beautiful without makeup that will leave you feeling gorgeous and confident. Makeup is fun, but it shouldn’t be obligatory! If, for whatever reason, you can’t or don’t want to wear makeup, whether on certain days or at all, here are some great ways to look beautiful without makeup you should try.

15 Ways to Look Beautiful without Makeup 1. SKINCARE Let’s start with the basics. If you were wearing makeup, it would be important to prepare the skin by cleansing it. The same goes for makeupfree days. Urban life can leave our skin grimy and dull, so cleanse regularly to keep your skin looking fresh if you want to be a natural beauty! This is one of the easiest and most practical ways to look beautiful with makeup, just try it! 2. GROOMING One tip to look beautiful without makeup is to make the most of your natural features. If you are ‘blessed’ with eyebrows that require constant plucking, keep them well maintained. Taking care of these details means that even without makeup, you look groomed and smart. 3. CONFIDENCE As I’ve said, makeup should be a fun tool to play with, not a mask that we hide behind. If you feel that you look terrible without your makeup, then your lack of confidence in your appearance will show. Believe that you look beautiful without makeup, and others will believe it as well. Many of the ways to look beautiful without makeup have to do with how you feel about yourself, and this is just one of them. 4. SMILE A genuine smile really does make anyone look great. People will notice your smile rather than any ‘flaws’ – and they certainly won’t notice that you’re makeup-free. Avoid a forced grin, as that won’t look at all natural, but let your smile reach your eyes. 5. NONCHALANCE We all have days when we want to disguise dull skin or spots, but beware of using makeup to hide behind. So what if you don’t have flawless skin? I can guarantee that the only person who sees your skin ‘problems’ is you. Just don’t worry about it; there really are more important things to think about! Once again, one of the best ways to look beautiful without makeup is to have confidence in yourself. BMAG 30

6. COOL CUT Having a fabulous haircut will definitely help you look beautiful without makeup. When you love your cut, you’ll look and feel great. Besides, when you’ve found a cut that suits you, it will become your ‘look’ and you won’t need cosmetics. You don’t need to spend a lot either, just find the right stylist (not always that difficult!). 7. NAPS & NUTRITION Many people don’t realise that the skin is our largest organ. It needs caring for both inside and out. To help it look beautiful without any makeup, feed it properly, with lots of water and vitamins. Also ensure that you get enough sleep and don’t overdo the alcoholic drinks – think how you look in the mirror the morning after! Taking care of yourself and your body is one of the most essential ways to look beautiful without makeup. 8. ENHANCE YOUR LASHES No, you don’t need mascara to bring out your lashes and make them look voluminous! There are actually other natural ways to pump up your lashes without reaching for that makeup bag. One way to make your lashes look darker, fuller and longer is by combing through with a layer of Vaseline. Vaseline really is a miracle product! It could be used as a solution to almost any female problem, so why should this be any different? 9. BRING OUT YOUR EYES You might feel like your eyes become dull and indistinguishable without any eyeliner or eye shadow, but don’t think that only makeup can bring our your eyes. Simply using eyes drops to wake up your whole face and make the whites of your eyes appear clearer can make the difference. You natural beauty can stand out without any artificial help! 10. MOISTURISE Cleansing your face and getting rid of skin dirt may not actually be enough to improve the condition of your skin, which is why it is important to moisturise it everyday. Even if you have oily skin, moisturising can prevent your body from excreting excess oil and help lock in moisture to keep your the surface of your skin even and smooth. Always wanted your skin to be as smooth as a baby’s bum? Start moisturising every day!

11. APPLY SUNSCREEN There is no way you can consider your skin to be healthy without protecting it from the harmful UV rays. Not only does sunscreen protection can result in facial improvement only after a couple of days but it also benefits your appearance in the long run, helping your skin age gracefully. Make applying sunscreen a couple of minutes before you leave your house a ritual even on the gloomy days, and you won’t regret it in the end. 12. WHITEN YOUR SMILE Another way that you can contribute to your makeup free appearance is by taking care of your smile. This means visiting your dentist when needed and keeping your smile bright, and shiny. You don’t have to resort to harmful whitening strips that often damage your enamel, but reach the effect of white smile by constantly using whitening toothpaste and mouthwash. Believe it or not this combination can lead to very effective results. In addition there are tons of natural remedies for a brighter smile! 13. HYGIENE Hygiene is the key concept in keeping up a good appearance. Oftentimes you don’t need a ton of makeup to look presentable! As long as you take care of yourself your natural beauty will shine through. Clean hair, nice nails, clean clothes and controlled body odour should be the foundation of your beauty so you should always prioritise your hygiene first before using additional tricks to improve your appearance. 14. GET RID OF TOXINS What is a better way to take care of your body, skin and health than by taking caring of yourself on the inside. After all your appearance is the reflection of your internal health and if you want to feel confident about yourself without hiding behind makeup, you should lead a healthy lifestyle. Part of a healthy lifestyle is exercise and good diet. Both of these things will help you get rid of toxins, and emphasise your natural beauty! 15. MOISTURISE YOUR LIPS There is a no need to use lipsticks or lip stains to change the colour of your lips because in the end your natural lip colour will always suit you best. The only thing that you have to do is bring out that colour. In order to do that you should exfoliate your lips every week to get rid of the dead skin and moisturise them so they become soft. There is no need for fancy cosmetic products, all you need is a toothbrush to lightly rub your lips with and any lip balm of your preference.

25 Ways to Tighten Skin After Weight Loss

There are lots of ways to tighten skin after you lose weight, and many reasons to do so. The loose skin can come from pregnancy or even just dropping a lot of weight at one time. While you might be at your goal weight, you might still feel bulky, and the culprit is loose, sagging skin. How do you tighten skin after weight loss, so you can fit into the clothes you want, and look as gorgeous, healthy, and toned as you know you are? B Mag can help. If your skin is slow to rebound, keep reading. Here are 25 ways to tighten skin after weight loss… you can do it!

BMAG 32

1. DON’T LOSE WEIGHT TOO QUICKLY Dropping a lot of weight at one time can be bad for you, not just for your health, but in general, it can make your skin sag. One of the ways to tighten skin after weight loss is to lose your weight gradually. If you are trying to rid yourself of the baby fat after a baby, just tone a lot, don’t immediately jump onto a crash diet that will make you lose a bunch of weight in a short amount of time. Remember, time is your friend and you want your weight loss to be healthy! 2. SKIN FIRMING CREAMS Skin firming lotion is definitely one of the best ways to tighten skin after weight loss and even after a baby. You want creams that are filled with herbal ingredients, aloe vera, and even some vitamin E and A. These are all ingredients that are designed specifically to increase the collagen and elastin in your skin! 3. LIMIT YOUR EXPOSURE Your skin needs to be nurtured. Being out in the sun too long and too much exposure to hot and chlorinated water can loosen up your skin even more than it is now. Limit your exposure to both of these things, along with tanning booths and you’ll see your skin start to firm up in no time! 4. MINERAL/SALT SCRUBS Scientists think the reason using sea salt scrubs (or other scrubs) helps tighten skin after weight loss is that they encourage increased blood flow, which in turn encourages healthy, elastic skin. Whatever the exact reason, it does seem to work for many people… try using a good scrub in the shower twice a day, at least three times a week, and see if it helps you! Mineral scrubs are also extremely good, just a little bit of sand can go a very long way! 5. USE A COLLAGEN CREAM Another way to tighten skin after weight loss is to keep it nourished with a collagen cream, one designed specifically to cope with loose, sagging skin. They can be pricey, but well worth the expense when they work. Note that collagen creams won’t work for everyone (nothing ever does), so ask family and friends for recommendations before you invest in a range of products that aren’t effective. 6. TRY MASSAGE THERAPY I have a particular friend who swears her weekly massage therapy helped her tighten skin after weight loss. She complained of sagging skin, particularly on her upper arms and upper thighs, and is delighted to show off her non-saggy parts now. Why not give it a go? At best, it will help tighten your skin, at worst you get an invigorating massage. Massages help stimulate the blood cells and really help your skin feel much firmer! 7. SPA WRAP Another friend tells me her skin was tightened when she got a seaweed wrap at a local spa, and now she goes every 6 to 8 weeks to enjoy its benefits. Seaweed isn’t the only wrap to try either, so ask the spa experts and see what would be great for skin tightening! 8. ADD WEIGHT TRAINING Chances are, you used weight training to help you get to your goal weight, but if not, it’s time to add it to help tighten skin after weight loss! If you’re worried about looking overly buff and masculine, don’t be. Simply add weights to your workout three times a week, because building toned, lean muscle under your skin will help it look tighter… and sexier! 9. HYDRATE YOURSELF Healthy skin is hydrated skin! Adding in at least 8 glasses of water a day to your diet can make all of the difference in the world. Hydrating yourself after a workout makes sure that your body stays hydrated. When your body is hydrated, it comes out in your skin, makes it look glowing, and tightens it up! 10. PRACTICE YOGA Yoga will help you relieve stress, be more flexible, lose weight, and can even help your skin rebound after weight loss! The key with yoga, and any other regimen for that matter is to start off slow. Within a few weeks, you’ll be surprised how much more flexible you, and your skin, can be. There are tons of yoga classes that you can take or you can even start to do it at home! 11. RAW FOODS There are a lot of vitamins and nutrients that can be cooked out of foods. To avoid that, why not add in some raw foods to your diet? Raw foods can be anything from fruits to veggies to even fish (sushi anyone?). Once you start to add these raw foods to your diet, you’ll see how quickly your skin tightens up! 12. DO CALISTHENICS Calisthenics are great for building lean muscle, great for your heart, and they’re even great for tightening skin after weight loss! Add a round of calisthenics to your weekly routine, three or four times a week, and enjoy the jumping jacks, push-ups, windmills, and more… they can be fun, and they’re helping your skin readjust at the same time. 13. LEAN PROTEIN Adding lean protein to your diet will also help tighten skin after weight loss. How? First of all, it helps build lean muscle, which will make you appear more toned (well, you WILL be more toned!). But lean protein also contains the collagen and other nutrients your skin needs to stay elastic. Tip: consuming lean protein after a workout will help boost the musclebuilding effect.

14. AVOID JUNK FOOD Foods that are high in fat are a dieter’s worst nightmare on two fronts. First, obviously, they can wreck your diet. Second, they do your skin no favours. If you’re trying to keep a healthy weight or tighten skin after weight loss, avoid foods that are high in fat. Even the ones that taste really, really good. ESPECIALLY the ones that taste really, really good! Studies have shown that these high fat foods can even be addictive... so stay away! 15. FRUITS & VEGGIES It is recommended that we eat five servings of fresh fruits and veggies every day, to give us nutrients we need and to help us maintain healthy weights. But did you also know these five servings will help tighten up your skin? Whether your weight loss is from a pregnancy or you’re doing it just because you want to, adding in these fruits and veggies is the best idea! The reason they work to help tighten up your skin is because most fruits and veggies have a high water content, which your skin needs to rebound. 16. AVOID SULFATES/HARSH SOAPS Sulfates are used in lots of body washes, soaps, and shampoos because they’re good, cheap cleansers and they make lush lather. But sulfates can also over-dry and irritate skin, stripping it of vital moisture and making it less elastic. If you’re trying to tighten skin after weight loss, shop around for sulfate-free products. 17. DON’T TAN The tanning process is horrible for your skin, especially when you’re using a tanning bed to boost your melanin. You might think it makes your skin look smoother and healthier, but it doesn’t. Wear sun block when you’re outdoors, and don’t fake and bake. You’ll see your skin tighten more quickly, and you’ll also avoid a greater risk of skin cancer. 18. RINSE AWAY CHLORINE Excess chlorine from swimming pools and hot tubs can dry out your skin, making it less elastic, and less likely to rebound after weight loss. If you swim to keep fit, be sure to shower immediately after, and use cleaners designed to remove chlorine and moisturise your skin. Also, remember that you don’t need HOT water to rinse chlorine away, use warm water instead, which will also help keep your skin hydrated (hot water can strip away natural oils). 19. CASTOR OIL Castor oil is another great natural way to tighten up your skin. Weird right? But if you combine a little castor oil with some lemon juice or even lavender oil and rub it into your skin, you’ll see your skin start to tighten. To be honest, this is one of the greatest ways that you can tighten up your skin! Only use a few tablespoons of castor oil every night and you’ll see a difference! 20. ESSENTIAL OILS Whether you’ve lost weight because you were pregnant or you just want to get to your goal weight, tightening up your skin is so important! Essential oils can really help your skin tighten up, if you are using the right ones! Lavender essential oil is truly one of the best! Just a few teaspoons every night along your stomach can work wonders! 21. TIGHTENING MASK Tightening masks work wonders for your face, why wouldn’t they work for your stomach? Example, use a single egg white mask on your stomach at least three times a week. You let it dry and then rinse it off and gently scrub it dry. Within a few months (it does take a while), you’ll see a difference! 22. TIGHTENING ASTRINGENT A lot of people forget that they can make their very own tightening astringent which can really tighten up your skin and give you the results you are looking for. A little honey, some rosemary, and some witch hazel can go a very long way! Rosemary has been known to improve circulation and will really help your skin tighten up! 23. ALMOND OIL If you are looking for a really great moisturiser that will rid you of stretch marks and tighten up your skin, almond oil is the key! Just a small amount of this rubbed along your stomach every day will really make your skin super soft and tighten it up! Use about a teaspoon of this every night and your skin will look so much better! 24. SOY PROTEIN Did you know that soy protein and even aloe vera are two things that can really help up the elastin in your skin and make it tighten up? You can add soy to your diet and even find creams that have both of these ingredients in them. If you apply that cream twice a day, every day, you’ll see quite a bit of difference to you skin! 25. CLEANSER Finally, you need to think about what you are using to cleanse your skin with. Did you know you can make your own cleanser? Mixing things like sugar, milk, and a few mashed up fruits such as grapes, papaya, berries of any kind, and even oranges can all tighten up your skin!

Now follow these tips to tighten your skin after weight loss and you’ll be bikini ready in no time… well, at least within 6 months! You can do it! Or… perhaps you already have!

A Who’s Who Guide to Hollywood’s Curly-Haired Celebs From subtle waves to full-on coils, here are 10 stars we love for refusing to straight iron their strands on the reg. TAYLOR SWIFT never has a bad hair day, which is probably one of the reasons why the country crooner snags so many hotties. ANNALYNNE McCORD is known for having some of the most tightly wound ringlets in the celebrity beauty sphere and that’s just one of the reasons we love her (her bikini bod might be #2). TAYLOR SWIFT

ANNALYNNE MCCORD

All hail queen b and her weave. Whether she’s rocking long luscious waves or seriously springy spirals, we love them - like XO. Naturally beachy or touched up with a curling iron, we’ll always prefer SELENA GOMEZ with a little more bend to her ‘do. Curly girls usually keep their locks longer, in fear of a frizzy, Carrot Top situation if they go too short. ADRIENNE BAILON is one celeb that defies this rule and looks great with a corkscrew bob, however. We love that SOLANGE continues to go au natural with her hair. It’s not only refreshing, but also fierce. Dear LEONA LEWIS, NEVER change your hair. Ever. We mean it though. You have the best mane in H-Wood. Period. Our favourite ginger, BELLA THORNE, wins for “most creative curly-haired gal” amongst the celeb set. Between coloured ribbons, eccentric braids, and other whimsical accessories, she’s always switching up her look. VANESSA HUDGENS always looks Sprannnnng Breaaaaak-ready with tousled waves in a rainbow of colours. She owns messy-sexy stands in the best way possible.

Personal Fitness Trainer & Nutritional Therapist Elka Hanglin is a personal fitness trainer and nutritional therapist. She is certified by ISSA, Futurefit and has a BSC in Psychology. Here, we speak with the fitness enthusiast about how she got involved in this career, what a good workout means to her and why her unique fitness philosophy works more than others. How did you first become involved in fitness? What made you choose being a trainer over other professions? “My love for fitness came about from a very young age. I was always involved in sports in school and especially devoted to gymnastics. Once I left to university, my extracurricular activities came to a halt as I dedicated myself to my education. Being left to fend for myself with no one to cook for me or tell me what to do, I slowly started to gain weight. When I came back home one Christmas, much to my dismay I did not fit into my new year’s dress! Being so skinny all my life and never having to worry about my weight, this came as a total shock to me! That was the first time I had to go on a “diet”. Eureka! Two weeks later, I fit into my dress! From that day forward, I decided that would never happen to me again. So when I got back to university I joined a gym. At first I had absolutely no idea what to do in the gym so instead I purchased some fitness DVDs and played them from my laptop a few times a week. Slowly I became more enthusiastic with exercise and more concerned about my weight. It pains me to reveal this to you, but I sort of developed an eating disorder. I used to binge on the weekends and pretty much starve during the week to compensate for my surplus of calories! This became a vicious cycle for a couple of years. More often than I would burst into tears on Sunday nights, eating everything in sight telling myself I would not do it again… But I was kidding myself, it continued, week after week. I couldn’t control it! Eventually I got sick of living that lifestyle and I decided to expand my knowledge on nutrition. So I enrolled in a nutrition course and got certified with Futurefit. Slowly but surely, I kept educating myself in fitness and nutrition, and course after course; I grew a passion for it. And that’s where I am today… health lover and starve free! At present, I provide personal training and nutrition services on a part-time basis.” Does your fitness program include nutrition as well? Do you set up a specific diet for someone to follow as part of the program? “From the outset, I like to have a consultation with clients to get to know them and their goals. Some clients are quite motivated individuals who only need a program to follow, whereas those who are not so motivated (usually beginners) need one on one sessions for the motivation and guidance. I ask clients to provide me with a dietary record of their daily food intake so that I can identify their eating patterns and provide them with guidelines on proper nutrition, whilst working within their food preferences i.e. vegetarians, etc. Although I advocate a healthy LIFESTYLE, I do offer packages, which include a healthy diet for clients to follow. I find many clients would rather be told what to eat and what not to eat as opposed to be given general guidelines. I also offer specific diet plans tailored to the client’s calorie needs to accomplish their goals, whether it is for muscle building or fat loss.” BMAG 36

What is the average time that you spend with one client? “Usually clients, in particular beginners, book a minimum of 20 sessions, which is enough to ensure they stay on track towards their fitness goals, learn to progress safely through exercises, understand manipulation of exercise variables such us reps, sets, rest intervals etc and most importantly to provide accountability! When you feel answerable to someone, you work harder! A beginner will always train harder and more effectively with a personal trainer than on their own. Personal training is more than just having someone count repetitions for you!” What steps are taken to ensure they will still lead a healthy lifestyle when the program is over? “I find the longer I spend with a client, the more this lifestyle becomes ingrained into their system! I always try to be a positive and encouraging trainer, which is the most important thing with a beginner so that I can create a positive experience for them, and sessions after session, most learn to love the gym!” Besides losing weight, what have been some reasons people have sought out your help as a trainer? “Many women contact me not only to lose weight, but also to pack on some lean muscle which I definitely get excited about, as many women are afraid of muscle as they think they are going to turn into this manly monster! Let me reiterate this to the ladies reading this… it is not possible for women to get big and bulky, as we don’t produce testosterone as much as males do! Aside from the fact that it takes hours of dedication and a huge surplus of calories to build muscle! Let me tell you… weight training can change your life forever, it definitely changed mine. Many people think that fitness must be torture or punishment to be able to get results and are attracted to the new and cool fitness workout “everybody is doing now” which produces fatigue and a lot of soreness! This is what we think we want as a society… but its wrong! Anyone can do that! Training is progressive, and ultimately, the real reason why people seek my help as a trainer or any other trainer is to feel good about themselves. You want muscle? Why? To feel good about yourself… You want to lose fat? Why? To feel good about yourself! At the end of the day, it’s all about the mental aspect that training produces.” How important is nutrient timing for performance and/or building muscle? “Nutrient timing for performance and building muscle is of utmost importance! Let me explain… Aside from the fact that in order to build muscle, a surplus of calories is required, one should aim to consume most of their carbohydrate dense foods during and after training (along with some protein), as this is the time that muscles are most sensitive to nutrients, and like a sponge our muscles take in all the glycogen (from the carbohydrates) more readily straight after training. If your muscles are not fed during this time, your hard work in the gym can be counterproductive! It can lead to muscle breakdown instead. The goal of nutrient timing by means of consuming protein and more importantly carbohydrate dense foods, is to start the recovery period and start repairing the muscle broken down during exercise, as well as replace muscle glycogen (what was used for energy during your workout) in order to help improve your next workout. The specific timing ultimately depends on when you have a meal prior to training. So, the closer your meal is to your training session, the longer you can wait to refuel those muscles! Although might I add that If you are new to healthy eating and training, I wouldn’t worry too much about timing just yet! First get your diet in order.” How much does your program cost? “I don’t charge for a program but rather for the amount of sessions a client books with me. The amount of sessions a client books is totally dependent on their goals, experience with exercise, and motivation.” What do you think is the biggest mistake most people make when setting up a workout routine? “The biggest mistake I see is women focusing too much on a particular body part in the hope of spot reducing fat. For instance, doing crunches after crunches hoping the fat on their bellies will melt off! Unfortunately, you cannot choose where your body will lose the fat AND diet is a huge factor in fat loss. Everybody has the ability to lose fat or gain muscle, it’s just some people don’t have the strategies! Why are you not as lean as you want to be? Because you don’t eat the way you’re supposed to eat! It’s that simple.” What kind of training regime do you follow? “At the moment all my training sessions are based around resistance training (weight training). I am currently following an upper-body and lower-body split, 4 times a week and make sure I get full rest and recovery on the weekends.”

What keeps you motivated with your diet and training? “The feeling of well-being after a workout!” What kind of diet do you follow? “I don’t follow any particular diet as such and I don’t favour any diets in place of others. Everyone is different and what works for one might not work for someone else. I simply try to lead a healthy lifestyle by eliminating as much processed and refined food as possible. Don’t get me wrong, I still slip up and eat junk every now and then, I am human, and I have a massive sweet tooth! Because I have such a sweet tooth I love to experiment in the kitchen and creating healthier alternatives to sweet treats and snacks! This is what helps me stay true to healthy eating as I enjoy my food!” What about supplements? “As health insurance, there are five staple supplements I pretty much stick to all year round. These are fish oils, probiotics, protein powder, multivitamins and a greens powder for when I don’t get enough vegetables in the day.” What’s the funniest thing you’re seen at the gym recently? “Hmmm not many funny things happen at 7am at the gym, but my training partner and I always have a good laugh acting like clowns.” How hard do you push yourself? “I always try to push myself as hard as I can at the gym and make every workout count, but I do occasionally have bad days.” Best advice you have ever received? “To face my fears. I suffer from high self-doubt! I know this is what stops most people from getting to where they want to be in life. Sometimes we put great fear into our heads of what might happen and it stops us from taking any chances! If you are afraid, just take action! Don’t think about it and you might be surprised at the results.” What’s the side of you that the public never sees? “I’m usually perceived as a quite and shy person, but once I get comfortable around people, I do stupid random things… or so I’m told!” What are your guilty pleasures… food wise? “Hello Nutella!!! Fuf… I think this is most women’s guilty pleasure. This stuff is magic! I literally eat spoonfuls out the jar!” What is your idea of perfect happiness? “To me perfect happiness is being able to accomplish all goals I set out to do, being content with everything I do and being healthy, and at the moment I can say I’m living up to it!” What is your greatest fear? “Losing my precious dogs. I have a bulldog named Diesel and a Chihuahua named Hercules. They are my life and soul!” Which living person do you most admire? “Anthony Robbins. He is the ultimate life coach and has an incredible understanding of the world, people and human nature. He knows what it takes to make people excel! I’d love to meet him one day, because I know he would make a big and positive difference to my life.” What do you consider is your greatest achievement? “Winning Miss Friendship in Miss Gibraltar 2004, hehe. I was honoured that out of 16 girls that competed that year, many of them voted for me!” What is your personal quote or motto that you live by? “To learn to play with life instead of fighting it and accepting whatever comes my way. I know anything that happens to me is a chance to grow and learn.” If you could go back and start your life over again, what one thing would you do differently? “I wouldn’t do anything differently to be honest. I feel that these years of my life have shaped me into the person I am today. I have learned lessons every year and have used those lessons to move forward with my life.” What are your future goals, dreams and plans? “To keep educating myself and becoming the best I can be at everything I do.” If someone wants to connect with you, where can you be found? “If anyone would like to contact me, they can refer to my Facebook page “Elka Hanglin Fitness & Nutrition” or email me at elkabuffa@hotmail.com.” Final words to the B Mag readers. “I would just like to inform readers that exercising and eating clean isn’t temporary, its not only about looking good at the beach in summer… health matters and training is always, its forever… so find something you love to do, and stick to it!” BMAG 37

Marcus & Chantelle got married at the Icehotel Swedish Lapland just

two months ago on 14th January.

They were together for 5 years before he proposed and it took 15 years before they tied the knot. With only 27 guests attending the wedding, a tailor-made wedding dress, clay foam flowers, and some unique wedding shoes‌ Ugg boots from Australia, Marcus & Chantelle’s wedding was unique, special and magical.

Wedding of the Month Marcus & Chantelle Henshaw

BMAG 43

How did you first meet? “I first met Marcus in 1999, I was 16 and he was 18. He was working for a delivery company and I was working in the printing shop in Watergardens. He would come in and talk to my work colleague (Mike) all the time. I really disliked him; I thought he was a pain. Everyday after work he would be sat with his friends at Portland House and shout out ‘Rubia’ among other things. This went on for months. Then one day he stopped coming into the shop and I actually missed him being there. One night I was in Cool Blues with my friends and to cut a long story short he gave a friend and me a ride home. The next morning I woke up to the sound of really loud music being played from a car at the bottom of my balcony, when I saw it was Marcus we got talking and our relationship started from there.” How long were you together before he proposed? Was it a complete surprise? What was the engagement like? “We were together for 5 years when Marcus proposed, we just got our first apartment together and it was a complete surprise! He made our bedroom all nice with rose petals and candles so as soon as I saw that I knew what was coming!!! So after being together 15 years, we finally did it! Describe the wedding preparations. Did it take a lot of work to get the preparations done? “Christmas 2012… Marcus decided he wanted us to get married in a winter wonderland. So he looked around and came across a UK company called Lapland Weddings. They had a number of venues but Marcus decided that the Icehotel would be the perfect setting as they had it all: An ice church, chalets and lots of after activities in a picturesque setting. The thought of sleeping on ice for the night would be fun. As the actual Icehotel is only open for 4 months of the year we had to set a date for either December 2013 or January 2014. We paid our deposit and we worked closely with Tara (Lapland weddings) to get things done. The hardest part was organising the paperwork, other than that it was all relatively easy. 12 days before the wedding the registrar called to ask where my certificate of non-impediment was... I almost had a heart attack! When we applied in Gibraltar we were told we only needed one as it’s done as a couple.... In Sweden you need two! Each person’s name as a header... Well luckily the registry office in Gibraltar provided me with an additional certificate. I am the first person to have a certificate with the ‘spinster’ first.” Did you use a professional wedding planner or did you organise everything yourself? “A bit of both. The Lapland flights etc was organised by Tara and the Gib/ Uk side by me. We had to coordinate everything so we did not spend too much time waiting around also, allowing for delays etc. The travel arrangements were a bit of a nightmare but in the end it all worked out relatively well.” What did you do for your hen night? “With all the celebrations leading up to and after Christmas we didn’t really have a hen/ stag party. The week before the wedding we had meals with different groups of friends that were unable to make it to the wedding. That in it self was perfect, good food, friends wine and champagne!” How were you feeling the days leading up to the big day? “Honestly, shattered! I was so ill with a bad cold, trying to keep everyone happy was draining. Like it or not people always seem to group off so trying to find something for everyone to participate in was hard. I was so tired, in the end we left everyone to their own devices and it worked out pretty well. The best thing about it all was I managed to give up smoking.” Where and when did you get married and why? “We got married in the Icehotel in Sweden on 14th January 2014. We always joked that we would go to Lapland for Christmas but never actually got round to it. Then last December Marcus decided that we should get married there. He chose the Icehotel as each year is truly unique, there seemed to be something special about the winter wonderland and the fact that the ice church was just for a handful of weddings each year.” What was the most special thing about the ceremony? “There were so many special things about the ceremony. Marcus had organised a singer for when I walked up the isle so that was a nice surprise, most of all I was looking around and seeing how fortunate we are at having wonderful friends and family that all played a special part in our day.” Did you have music playing in the background? “We did. It was all rather last minute. When I was at the hairdressers Marcus found a local Sami (Lapland Native) singer so it was a lovely surprise when walking down the isle.” Who helped you get ready for the wedding? “Rabab, one of our guests came into my room early off with a bottle of champagne and her makeup bag so that was already a nice start. I had a terrible cold that got worse as it drew closer to the wedding. I felt completely drained so she took it upon herself to do my makeup. After that was done I made myself over to the cabin where my dress was to get ready with my mother, mother-in-law, aunty Jane and my maid of honour Gabriela. Marcus was getting ready with his brothers.” BMAG 44

What type of colour scheme or other theme did you choose for the bridesmaids and wedding arrangements and why? “As we have tried to do it all before I wanted to avoid everything we chose previous. So this time round it was gold, mint and aqua. Everything just seemed to come together. It was important that my niece Isobel had an amazing dress. So I managed to find a designer and ordered a long tutu and bodice from America, it was exactly how I imagined it to be. It was a mixture of gold, white and ivory. Gabriela’s dress (my maid of honour) was ordered from Milan, as soon as I saw the style I knew instantly that was the one for her. It was a mint aqua. The hardest thing to co-ordinate was the shoes; we needed snow boots and dreaded the thought of the standard under such beautiful dresses. So the hunt for Uggs began. I managed to get the exact colours to all dresses; they came direct from Ugg Australia. That’s when I found out the LFA had a wedding range that matched my dress, after 5 months I managed to get my hands on a pair of the ‘Just Married’ boots. As for the wedding guest book, name place cards etc, it was all out of wood. We didn’t want to carry on the snow theme as that would be going over the top so we opted for natural resources, which was unique and looked lovely. Even our rings were carried differently, I managed to find an old pocket watch, which my father-in-law took out the clockwork and mother-in-law lined with the lace of my dress. So much better than the standard ring bearer pillow.” Did you arrive on time? Who walked you up the aisle? “No not on time! For once it wasn’t actually my fault hahaha. I was about 15-20 min late; I have no idea why we were just hovering about. My fatherin-Law, Stephen Henshaw gave me away. He made a joke about it not being fair giving me away with one arm and gaining me back with another hahaha!” Who were your bridesmaids and best man? “Sadly, as Marcus’s best man John Nash was unable to make the wedding he decided that Jack (my nephew) would be the ring bearer. My maid of honour was Gabriela and bridesmaid was my little niece Isobel.” How many guests attended your wedding? How were guests chosen? “There were 29 of us in total. To be completely honest we only expected a small handful, as it being just after Christmas and a great expense we knew may of our friends and family would not be able to make it. As I decided not to follow with the traditional wedding invitation we had something truly unique so only had 70 made and shipped over from America. Obviously, family came first and then we chose a handful of our closest friends.” How did you decide where to hold the wedding banquet? Was the wedding reception what you and your husband had expected? “Well that was easy as we only had the choice of one of two places. We chose the Icehotel restaurant banqueting room. It was cosy; the colour scheme seemed to fit so all was good. I think we were all just glad it was warm. On our wedding day it was -38 so anything with a bit of heat would have been perfect. Our table setting was rather simple, there were so many colours in the room, and it was just as well. Our mothers and my sister added the final touches… our wedding favours were Charbonel Et Walker Champagne truffles, top hats for the men and a hearts for the ladies, they were actually bigger than expected so took up some room, then the wooden name places and scattered diamonds, enough to make a statement but at the same time simple. As natural flowers freeze in the snow I had clay foam one’s especially made, they came from Latvia. They looked stunning, at a glance you would not be able to tell they were not the real thing, they also doubled up as table deco along with the candelabras. The food was rather beautiful; most guests took photos before eating as most of our dishes were served on ice.”

What sort of jewellery did you wear, how did you select it and why? “As my dress made a statement in itself I did not want to go overboard with accessories. My tiara was quite important and that was probably the thing that took the longest to find. In the end I managed to get the perfect one from Ivory & co. My sister loaned me a platinum blue diamond ring, it’s a family heirloom. That was for my something blue. Rabab (one of our guests) wanted me to wear her gold Chopard bracelet; she wore it on her wedding day and passed it over to me for my something borrowed. Then for my something new I had diamond earrings with the stone cut to follow the tiara.” First dance song? Why? “Our first dance song was suppose to be ‘Heaven’ by Boyce Avenue but as I had a really bad cold I disappeared off to bed after dinner and left our guests with Marcus where they had a night cap in the Icebar.” What was the most memorable moment of your wedding? Any memorable gifts? “Everything!!! It was just so picturesque. I suppose if there was one memorable moment it would be that I jumped in with ‘I do’ way before I was suppose to. Very eager bride hahaha at least everyone laughed. As for the gifts, we have been so spoilt! As we have been together so long and are fortunate to have everything we could possibly wish for we really did not expect anything. People kept on asking us what we wanted and we could not think of anything. One of our guests was rather upset as part of our wedding gift was confiscated at customs! They brought us Cartier sunglasses and miniature Cartier Champagne. As they had the champagne in hand luggage all was fine until they reached Stockholm… That’s where it got confiscated. There was a little commotion but obviously we didn’t know until after the event. A lot of family and friends gave us money so we made sure we did almost every possible activity we could.” Where did you stay on your wedding night? “In the Kosmos Chalets. We were going to spend the night in an Art Suite. As my cold really kicked in full force we were advised I sleep in the warm room on the wedding night.” Where did you go on your honeymoon? “We stayed on an additional 5 days in Lapland so we could see/do the activities we wanted and then made our way to Thailand - Alvista hideaway resort and spa, it was amazing! When in Thailand we went to every island possible... Phiphi Island, Coral Island, James Bond etc. I think we covered most of them, when we got back we needed a honeymoon from the honeymoon.” What has changed now that you are married? How are you getting on with your married life? What does it mean to you? “Life has carried on as normal... Well almost, Marcus has been extra attentive! People say that being married rarely changes a relationship, I think in a way it does... it makes you feel more complete.” Plans for the future. “Babies!” Final message. “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends (part of our wedding invitation).”

What sort of wedding cake did you select? “I was originally going to have Fiona, Sweet Things by Fi to create something unique just for us. Sadly, as we had 3 flights to get there so no way that it could be done. So the hotel said that they could make a traditional Swedish wedding cake. We went for it knowing that Fiona was going to make us a ‘top layer’ when we got home. It was prettier than I imagined, decorated with calla lilies, it tasted fantastic.” How did you find the perfect dress? Was your wedding gown tailor-made or did you buy a finished article? “My dress was made by Dorcas Hammond (Marcus’s Aunty) I was so fortunate that Dorcas had the time and vision to capture something that was truly me. As I already had a ‘started gown’ from our previous attempt it all got changed. The majority of my dress was a raw silk, a Champagne colour, and then came the lace. I could not find what I wanted anywhere so I got on the Internet and found Joel & Sons Fabrics, London. They had exactly what I wanted, in gold with Swarovski. I just had to have it. At first everyone was a bit sceptic as it was over the Internet but as the company had a Royal warrant I was happy with what I ordered. There’s not one particular thing that was ‘best’ as Dorcas created an amazing gown… I loved it all.” BMAG 45

Colour of Spring 2014 Dazzling Blue

The winter blues might not be so bad this year, as long as you’re dreaming about Pantone’s hot new colour for spring 2014, dazzling blue, and all the ways you can use this colour in your home. Pantone, the leading authority on colour, announced the hot new shade as a trend, which has been dubbed as a “peppy shade of cobalt” – a jolt of a true blue, not too much purple and not too much red. It was a prominent hue on the spring 2014 fashion runways (Chloe and Jenny Packham used it heavily, paired with blacks and whites), and it’s easy to incorporate into your home decor as well. Here are 10 picks to bring the vibrant colour into your home.

4. Accent Cushions One of the easiest ways to incorporate any new trend or colour into your home is with throw cushion and pillows. These will be perfect for an outdoor setting, or on a chaise next to a sunny window.

6. Bring Blue to the Dining Table

5. Make Blue your Focal Point

These graduated blue glasses have an oldfashion tumbler vibe and will make you appreciate all shades of blue, not just 2014’s hottest hue, dazzling blue.

8. Set the Table A punch of pretty blue beneath your regular tableware will keep you on trend and liven up your dining room.

THINKING OF PURCHASING A PROPERTY IN GIBRALTAR…..WHAT NEXT? There are a number of important factors that you should take into account:Choosing the right property Often, your first contact will be with an estate agent. Once you choose the property you wish to purchase your estate agent will require that you pay a deposit equal to two per cent of the agreed purchase price and a reservation agreement being entered into by the parties. Finance – do you require a mortgage facility? Where a mortgage facility is required consider and compare what the different lending institutions in Gibraltar offer. Once a mortgage offer is secured the Bank or Building Society will contact us with appropriate instructions to secure their interest and provide them with the relevant documentation. Establishing good title to the property It is important that we are able to establish if vendor has proper title to sell the property before you enter into any binding contract for its purchase. Once good title is established the documentation will be drafted and circulated for approval by all parties in readiness for completion. At this point a completion date will be agreed so that funding is made available in good time.

Stamp duty and registration After completion we will take care of paying stamp duty (where applicable) and registering the relevant title documents pursuant to the laws of Gibraltar. The stamp duty depends on the value of the property and the amount of the mortgage. There is also a registration fee payable to the Land Registry. How long does the whole process take? This very much depends on whether the vendor is caught in a “chain” as all transactions will need to be scheduled to take place simultaneously. It will also be dependent on how soon facilities will be approved and made available by the lending institution. Registration of the documents post-completion can take up to 6 months.

10 Budget Friendly

Kitchen

Makeover

Ideas

If a full-blown kitchen renovation isn’t in the budget, try these more manageable ideas to breathe new life into your kitchen. Renovating your kitchen needn’t cost as much as a decent university education. With a bit of research, imagination, and in some cases, a little DIY effort, you can make an old kitchen look almost brand new. Here are a few suggestions. 4. Beef up and modernise accent lighting. Pendants or other decorative fixtures add instant elegance.

1. Re-facing cabinet doors might seem like an economical alternative to fully replacing cabinetry, but buyers beware – especially with older kitchens. Often you have to replace the hinges as well, which can weaken the cabinet structure over time and lead to sagging. Instead, consider having your existing doors spraypainted. It’s way better than painting with a brush, which can cause blobs and drips in the grooves of the door profile, and they’ll look like new.” 2. It’s amazing how new door hardware will transform a cabinet. If you are having the doors sprayed anyway, the pros will fill in the old hardware holes, allowing you to choose any style you like as a replacement. 3. Instead of replacing an ugly kitchen countertop (which has its own set of drawbacks if you are retaining the base, especially if the old countertop is glued on), you can hire specialists who will add a quarter-inch veneer of genuine granite right on top of the old counter, for the look and almost the same durability as solid granite. BMAG 54

5. Ceiling lighting can have a huge effect on the look and feel of your kitchen. Halogen pot lighting has become almost the norm in many new kitchens and renovations. Halogen was never really meant for ambient lighting, and it can cause glare and fatigue. They’ve come a long way with LED bulbs nowadays; they cost more initially but they last for years, are very energy-efficient, and are cool to the touch. Oldfashioned recessed can lighting, especially the kind with black liners, can be retrofitted with updated energy-efficient versions with little or no repairs to the ceiling. 6. On the subject of lighting, many older kitchens simply don’t have enough, which can be very fatiguing. If you don’t want to hire an electrician to install more built-in lighting, there are lower-cost options such as “rope” lighting, which can be added under overhead cabinets, or even plug-in strip lighting, which you can put in yourself. 7. Even if you don’t do anything else to update, it’s amazing what a new coat of white paint on the ceiling will do to brighten things up. Ceilings get dingy over time with smoke, dust, and dirt almost without you noticing it.

8. If you don’t have an existing kitchen backsplash, this is a great opportunity to add character and elegance for just a few pounds. Because backsplashes don’t require a large number of tiles, you can splurge on fancy ones, add a mix of high-end and plain ones, or create a focal point with mosaics, mirror tiles or other decorative options. Dated ceramic tile can be spray-painted in the same way as cabinets. 9. Click flooring can be installed right on top of ugly old floors; providing your existing floor is level, you can also install cork, laminate tile or linoleum. With care, these are all options you can do yourself. 10. Update, clean and de-clutter accessories; many of us tend to accumulate china figurines on the windowsill and cute magnets on the fridge, and just stop noticing them after a while. Replace with something new and fresh: pretty vases or bowls, collections of vintage bottles, or simply a spotless, uncluttered expanse of windows.

KING ARTHUR PANTOMIME

The Trafalgar Theatre Group presented King Arthur between 23rd January and 1st February at the Inces Hall. An original Limelight Script had all the traditional features which made the pantomime such a brilliant family entertainment; the Principal Boy and the Dame, a Princess, a Baddie and a Wizard, stupid Henchmen and idiotic Knights, a real Dragon (well maybe not real), a full chorus of adults and children, singing and dancing and, of course, audience participation.

Fashionscopes

MARCH 2014

What’s your fashion horoscope? Find out!

Pisces

You prefer soft fabrics, such as silk, chiffon and velvet, and glamorous evening looks that sparkle. High heels may be your first and one true love. You adore heels in all styles, even if you don’t wear them that often. Celebrities with this Sign: Rihanna, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Biel & Eva Longoria.

Cancer

No tomboy, you like to celebrate your femininity through fashion by choosing soft fabrics like silk, satin and liquid jersey. You also favour pieces with subtle luminosity, like a knit tank in shimmering silver. Celebrities with this Sign: Liv Tyler, Kristen Bell, Giselle Bundchen & Jessica Simpson.

Scorpio

Versatile, well-cut staples in neutral hues, like luxe leather knee-high boots or a plush velvet blazer, are your fashion favourites. You like to look ladylike but with an edge. This style strategy keeps the focus firmly on you, not your outfit. Celebrities with this Sign: Rachel McAdams, Julia Roberts, Katy Perry & Anne Hathaway.

Aries

You pick up on trends early, adding fresh twists to make them your own, of course. You love colour and favour clean, dramatic lines, but whether you sport casual workout duds or slip into a sexy mini, your confidence is always your best accessory. Celebrities with this Sign: Sarah Jessica Parker, Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon & Kate Hudson.

Leo

You love designer clothes and have very sophisticated taste. You prefer to buy only the very best, like an exquisite vintage tulle cocktail dress or a limited-edition handbag, rather than scores of lesser wares. Celebrities with this Sign: Charlize Theron, Madonna, Sandra Bullock & Jennifer Lopez.

Sagittarius

Relaxed elegance is your signature look. You favour menswear, like tailored trousers, worn with subtly feminine tops. When it comes to accents, you tend to wear one stunning piece, such as an oversize cocktail ring. Celebrities with this Sign: Katie Holmes, Scarlett Johansson, Katherine Heigl & Taylor Swift.

Taurus

You’re committed to investment dressing: Classic pieces in neutral tones and interesting textures make up the bulk of your wardrobe. For added sparkle you choose necklaces made of gold or gemstones. Celebrities with this Sign: Jessica Alba, Renee Zellweger, Megan Fox & Cate Blanchett.

Virgo

You seek out elegant, beautifully detailed pieces, such as an impeccably tailored trench or a wellfitted pima-cotton shirt. Striking designs catch your eye, but you shy away from anything too flashy or trendy. Celebrities with this Sign: Michelle Williams, Rachel Bilson, Cameron Diaz & Beyonce.

Capricorn

You prefer beautifully cut classic pieces made of superb quality fabrics for an overall look that is ladylike with a touch of old-school glamour. Luxurious staples like a taupe cashmere sweater, a creamcolored silk charmeuse blouse, and tailored black pants are the backbone of your wardrobe. Celebrities with this Sign: Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kate Bosworth & Amanda Peet.

Gemini

You choose clothes in classic shapes and styles but continually reinvent your look by wearing them with statement pieces from your vast collection of accessories. Celebrities with this Sign: Heidi Klum, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman & Naomi Campbell.

Libra

A true fashion lover, you are usually the first to try a new look. Overall you favour ultra feminine, soft clothes like tiered skirts, chiffon cocktail dresses and French lace lingerie. Celebrities with this Sign: Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Watts, Gwen Stefani & Kate Winslet.

Aquarius

You love expressing yourself through fashion and are a true trendsetter. By mixing pieces from different designers you create fresh looks of your own. Plus, your sense of humour shows when you don whimsical items, like shockingpurple pumps. Celebrities with this Sign: Alicia Keys, Ellen Degeneres, Jennifer Aniston & Elizabeth Banks.

Your birthday horoscope can tell you a lot about yourself and your style! BMAG 69
