Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For us, we’ve been busy publishing magazines and creating our annual events. The 13th edition of Miss Glamour

Life after having a baby is magical, wonderful, amazing and quite the adventure. They will take over your house, your life, and your heart. Planning on having a baby is one thing, living life after having a baby is entirely another and if ‘How it Feels to Give Birth’ is the one thing that you really want to know about, then turn to page 46, to read the reality about labour! On to a little fashion, whether you’re 35 or 75, every woman wants to look good on their wedding day. It is that one special day when you are the centre of everyone’s attention, and although you are there to celebrate your love between you and your significant other, lets be honest, you want to look like a total knockout. If you’re tying the knot a little later in life, you might think that there isn’t that much choice out there for a mature bride, right? Wrong! Whether you go for a designer, or off the high street, there are plenty of options for women of all ages, shapes, and taste. Every bride’s style is different, and like a fine wine, we at B Mag feel that a woman’s style gets better with age… You just need a little guidance. 18-year-old Izzi Tattersall was crowned Miss Glamour 2015 during the 13th consecutive edition of the competition held at the Alameda Open Air Theatre on Friday 10th July. Izzi who also won Miss Bikini and Miss Vogue, describing herself as cheerful, enjoys modelling and baking and aims to become a nursery teacher, was crowned by Miss Glamour 2014 Denille Patterson.
After weeks of rehearsals, hours of hair and makeup and an overload of nerves, ten gorgeous contestants prepared to take the stage on the evening of Friday 10th July to compete for the title of Miss Glamour 2015. Glamour Creations once again managed to successfully fill up the Alameda Open Air Theatre to capacity for the highly anticipated event. Maxine Cano won 1st Princess and Miss Catwalk, whilst Daniella Morillo was chosen 2nd Princess by the panel of professional judges: Renowned photographer Joanna Kustra, Miss Glamour 2006 Noelle Lopez, Miss Glamour 2008 and Miss Gibraltar 2014 Shyanne Azzopardi, Miss Gibraltar 2012 Jessica Baldachino and Miss Gibraltar 1995 Monique Perera. The ten contestants opened the show wearing a burgundy sequined playsuit and black high heels. If the girls were nervous it did not shine through their poised exteriors. Holding the microphone for the evening was Andy Coumbe. Each contestant stepped up to the microphone in a very organised and strategic manner, while the other girls continued their walk. The young ladies introduced themselves to the judges in this part of the show one by one, announcing their contestant number, name, age and sponsor. The rehearsals had paid off, as the girls appeared to be confident and executed the first choreography perfectly, giving the audience a great insight to what was expected throughout the rest of the night. Keeping the audience entertained whilst the contestants changed backstage during the show was the popular dance group Urban Dance, who performed four energetic dance pieces throughout the night. To add onto the entertainment, local singer Aouatif Ghabroui sang two songs, one of which she was joined by Alex Williams and for the final performance of the night Shaine Israel and World Dance Champion Ileana Martinez danced beautifully to Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’. The Miss Glamour contest is divided into four areas of competition: Miss Bikini, Miss Vogue, Miss Catwalk and Miss Elegant. In each of the sections the judges scored the contestant’s presence, attitude, poise, confidence and presentation. In the first half of the show we saw the girls in the Miss Bikini competition, all wearing the latest swimwear collection that had been donated by Glamour Creations, with matching accessories. The last time the audience got to see the contestants in the first half of the show was during the Miss Vogue Competition. In this part of the show the girls got to wear their own choice of clothing to reflect their style and personality through their outfit. The audience got to see many different looks on the stage; nevertheless all the girls looked stunning and impressed the audience and judges in their unique style. You could feel the tension and excitement rise in the audience as they seated again for the beginning of the second half of the show. The end of the night was getting near and the judges had a very hard job, as they would have only been able to see the contestants twice before they had to announce the winners. The second half began with the girls taking the stage as part of the Miss Catwalk Competition wearing a yellow flowy top, denim shorts and white wedges. Our final round of the competition was the ever-popular Miss Elegant competition. From beads and high slits to high heels and poise, they had looked forward for this moment since they began rehearsals. All the girls looked relaxed and did a fantastic job by impressing the judges in all the routines with their poise, catwalk, confidence and elegance. This was the last time we saw the contestants before the verdict by the judges was delivered. The moment everyone had been waiting for had arrived when last year’s winners were called up on stage to crown the new winners. Before this there were several other prizes that the judges needed to award the contestants based on their performance and this was done with the help of founder, experienced model, and organiser Bianca Zammit the Producer/Director of Glamour Creations, with awards given by Dream Girl of the Year 2015 Jayrene Patterson. The prizes kicked off with the Miss Friendship award that was won by Josiane Casciaro who also received the Miss Best Effort and Miss Elegant prize. Ailin Kroh was then awarded Miss Cover Girl and Miss People’s Choice was won BMAG 10
by Chanelle Measey. Daniella Morillo was crowned 2nd Princess, 1st Princess and Miss Catwalk was won by Maxine Cano and lastly, Izzi Tattersall who was also awarded Miss Bikini and Miss Vogue was also crowned Miss Glamour 2015 by last year’s winner Denille Patterson. Her years’ reign sees her working closely with Glamour Creations and B Magazine for the next 12 months. Just like all the other contestants mentioned above, Jade De Los Santos, Chloe Firth, Chelsea Hermida and Megan Kent, made their family, friends and most importantly themselves every bit proud as throughout the evening they conducted themselves in a confident, elegant and graceful manner. In a fantastic conclusion to the beauty pageant, which every year brings more glamour and glitz, with amazing choreography and catwalk training by Bianca Zammit, who continues to deliver outstanding shows (despite being 34 weeks pregnant), the contestants presented her with a gift as a token of appreciation for all her time and effort. The three girls looked absolutely amazing and extremely happy as they took their first walk down the stage as winners with trophies in hand and tiaras on their heads. They then joined their fellow contestants and Bianca to take a few last group photos to remember the night and their experiences leading up to show. The Miss Glamour programme provides an opportunity for young ladies between the ages of 15-20 to better themselves. Each year Glamour Creations work to provide a fair environment in which the contestants have the opportunity to compete not against others, but against themselves. The pageant encourages the contestants to build self-confidence, individual pride, and a greater self-awareness. They are pleased that a majority of contestants each year have never participated in a pageant and they find it to be a rewarding and worthwhile experience. Many contestants have won their first time out, and many others return because of the positive experience they had in their program. They like to think that each girl walks away from their program a little more ready to deal with the world around her, and more importantly, the world ahead of her. The Miss Glamour program is not about encouraging young women to “win” a pageant, but to encourage them to develop life skills, that will ultimately help them win in life by giving their personal best in everything they do. Whilst their program places an emphasis on excellence, achievement and personal growth, they also strive to make the pageant experience fun. BMAG 11

Miss Glamour is an annual local beauty pageant that is run by Glamour Creations. The contest was founded in 2003 by local personality Bianca Zammit, which was first staged at the Catholic Community Centre. The Miss Glamour contest, as we all know, is the most prestigious teen beauty pageant in Gibraltar and has become one of the highlights of the local social calendar.

Glamour Creations has entered its 13th successful year and the Miss Glamour 2015 show marked their 33rd production. They also organise Dream Girl of the Year for girls between the ages of 10-14 and the Wedding Dress Competition. All the shows to date are non-governmental and non-profit events with the proceeds benefiting local charities. Glamour Creations have already raised thousands of pounds in support of various local charities such as BabySTEPPs Gibraltar, The Guardian Angel Foundation, Childline Gibraltar, Gibraltar Community Association, Gibraltar Breast Cancer Support, RICC Gibraltar and GBC Open Day. August… the month of light summer dresses, mini skirts and short shorts is here, which means you’ll show your legs each day. Most women dream of having long legs, but let’s face it – this dream can actually come true in a jiffy. How? Easy! Lots of famous women create the illusion of longer legs, and you can do the same. Stop hiding your beautiful legs away under maxi skirts and dresses, follow these seven tips for creating the illusion of longer, prettier legs. 1. High waisted clothing
Do you know why so many famous women enjoy wearing high waisted skirts, dresses, shorts and jeans? Because they want to trick your eye into thinking they are taller than they actually are. In reality, you can also wear high waisted clothing to create the illusion of long, beautiful legs. When you wear a high waisted skirt, for instance, it’s hard to tell where your legs start, so everyone will believe your legs are incredibly long.
2. Black is your power colour
Want to make your legs look longer and slimmer? Black should become your favourite colour. When you wear black skinny jeans or trousers, your legs automatically look thinner and longer. Black helps to hide imperfections, and when you wear black high waisted jeans, you will look much slender in no time.
3. Wear shorter skirts & shorts
Sure, we’re not suggesting you wear a super short skirts or shorts on a daily basis. What we’re suggesting is to leave your midi and maxi skirts inside your closet and choose a bit shorter skirt for creating the illusion of longer legs. Whether you like to wear heels or flats, wearing pointed shoes is another way to create the illusion of longer legs. 5. Make your legs shine
Celebrities don’t have perfect legs, they just know how to make them look that way. Did you ever notice that almost every famous woman has insanely shiny legs? It might have been J-Lo’s bob that got people talking after this Tony Awards snap was taken, but it was the glossy bronde colour that made us swoon.

TOTALLY EXPOSED
“I am not sure whether I still need to introduce myself, of course every year some 400 of our children leave school and enter the adult world. They, in all probability, have a limited knowledge of what has been the history of their country of the last 50 years. So, for their benefit, I would remind readers that I became involved in politics 51 years ago when Sir Joshua and Peter Isola returned from the United Nations Decolonisation Committee, and here I am having just returned myself, from a one and a half hour meeting in New York with the Chairman of the Committee to argue, that only we, have the right to decide the future of our homeland and that this future will never be as part of Spain. 1964 was the year the UN told UK: “Talk to Spain about Gibraltar’s sovereignty”. For years UK rejected sovereignty talks. But after 1976, they held talks in what became known as the Strasbourg process, which our party opposed. This was followed by the Lisbon agreement in 1980, formalised at UN level, under which Spain promised to open the frontier but never did. The third attempt was the infamous Brussels agreement, which, for the first time, explicitly mentioned sovereignty negotiations and worse still split the sovereignty question into two, the isthmus and the city. This split reflected Spain’s view that the land beyond Casemates had been stolen, and undermined our territorial integrity. The GSLP argued it was the most dangerous decision ever taken in our whole history and we were alone; alone on Strasbourg, alone on Lisbon and alone on Brussels, Now, no one supports the Brussels agreement. However the damage was done, by accepting Brussels in the first place and defending it for many years. It was Brussels that paved the way for Hain’s joint sovereignty proposals. We are still paying the price today with Spain and the UN continuing to quote the Brussels terms as the criteria for our future. So, I guess you could say I am not the sort of guy, when it comes to fighting for our rights that gives up easily. The reason for my political involvement has been and continues to be to secure the political and economic future of our nation and its people. One of the debates of the past was over the amounts of reserves we accumulated. We coined the phrase “rainy day fund”, to describe what almost all small nation states do. When revenues are healthy they put money away for future generations. Although the GSD in 1996 said, “that rainy day is today” and set about spending it, now, fortunately for Gibraltar, the Opposition say they are in favour of the rainy day fund and so does the business community. We created the GSLP with these as its core values and as a socialist party in our eight years in government from 1988 and 1996 produced the foundations for economic structure that survives to this day, having spent the previous 16 years in Opposition from 1972 to 1988.
When we were returned to office in December 2011 many of the important achievements of our previous socialist government had fallen by the wayside as the party that took over from us had different policies and priorities. They limited the financial support to Community Care and let its reserves of over £60 million run dry. We had a commitment in 2011 to reverse this policy and restore the reserves by making grants to the charity, which we have done so that its reserves are again at over £60 million. We left the Savings Bank with healthy reserves, they made use of the reserves for recurrent government spending and left a balance of £1444, which we have again reversed. We now expect the Savings Bank to end up with around £20 million of reserves this year. The policy will continue to be to retain profits and keep increasing the reserves even if it reaches a level higher than 10% and in any event no dividend will be paid to the government unless and until the 10% level is reached, in other words the 10% will become the minimum level of reserves. How long it will take before this position is reached will not be easy to estimate given the very high rate of increase in deposits that the Savings Bank continues to experience. As well as leaving much higher levels of cash than had ever been accumulated by any previous administration and a huge increase in real assets, in land, buildings and infrastructure, in 1996 we left Gibraltar with zero net debt, as calculated by the formula introduced by the GSD in 2010. Economic growth and the efficient management of our economy is the central element in assuring the future of Gibraltar. The latest estimates of growth by the statistics office based on the 2012 census indicate £1.2 billion GDP for 2011/12. The target for 2015/16 in our manifesto of £1.65 billion could be reached a year early in 2014/15 and we are confident this year will now reach a level of around £1.8 billion.
The economic growth has given rise to job creation but to avoid what was happening before 2010, we have implemented as intended the GSD initiative announced that year requiring priority for local labour on government contracts and we have overcome the excuse of contractors regarding applicants not being suitable or experienced by providing a link to the training programmes for applicants where required.
The second element in the new approach has been that the nature of the training is demand led, indeed without this factor it is difficult to see how employers could be required to commit to employment on completion of training.
If we look at full time employment the expansion of non-construction employment since 2011 has been from 15,714 to 18,180 in 2014, an increase of 2,466 full time jobs outside construction, a 15.6% increase in 3 years. This level of full time jobs created outside the construction sector compares to the performance of the GSD in the 3 years before the General Elections, from 2008 to 2011, when the number of non-construction full time jobs grew from 14,580 to 15,714.
On the supply side, the payment of the national minimum wage has meant that it was much more attractive than its predecessor, and could be offered to unemployed persons across the spectrum, given that the national minimum wage is in fact the private sector rate of pay for most semiskilled jobs on offer through the employment service.
An increase under the GSD of 1134, which only amounted to 7.7%, that is, less than half the result of the last three years. The numbers in employment outside construction in the last six years show that since general election the job creation in the rest of the economy has been over twice the size what it was in the preceding three years. The importance of separating these figures is that we know that the present size of the construction sector is likely to shrink again in 2016 as it did in 2012 and will probably expand again later as new projects are launched. If we look at Gibraltarians in full time employment in 1996, 2011 and 2014, we can judge how our record over 3 years compares with 15 years of GSD Government. In 1996 there were 8207 Gibraltarians in full time jobs.
These two aspects were to secure the success of the training in achieving employment.
I am happy to say that the success rate of the training for employment programme is now at 69%. Of the 1722 persons who had completed their training by April this year or left for other reasons, 1181 were in employment after leaving the training on completion. This compares with the 28 to 30% claimed by the GSD as their success rate. The increase in jobs created by the growth in GDP between 2011 and 2014 meant, not just organic growth from existing employers whose business expanded, but also a net increase in the number of employers, adjusting for those whose business activities ceased in the intervening period. This is reflected in the number of returns of the employment survey questionnaires, which was 1,770 in 2014, compared to 1,445 in 2011. Of the 325 increase in returns 41 were in the Construction sector almost all being small start-up with under 5 employees. As you would expect the fact that we have been training more people and that they have obtained employment has been reflected in the number of jobs which is up, and the number of unemployed which is down.
In the 15 years of GSD Government they boasted of how successful they were in running the economy and creating employment. In 15 years, the number of Gibraltarians in full time employment went up from 8,207 to 8544, a miserly 334 increase in Gibraltarians employed in 15 years. From 8544 Gibraltarians in full time employment in October 2011, the number has grown to 9293 in October 2014, 749 more Gibraltarians with jobs in 3 years, an average of over 20 extra Gibraltarians in full time employment for every single month of those three years. More Gibraltarians employed in each month from October 2011 to October 2014, than they managed to employ in each year of the 14 years they were in government, from October 1996 to October 2010 when the average was 18 to19 a year. Our manifesto commitment was that the training for employment initiative would be introduced by no later than February 2012, demanding as the target date was, it was met and those previously on the GSD Vocational Training Scheme were offered training employment contracts on the national minimum wage. All those on the waiting list and those already in the discontinued scheme were taken on during February. There were two elements in the strategy: The first was that trainees were placed in the private sector with employers who entered into a business partnership agreement with the training company. This requires the placement provider to commit to employment at the end of the training period. The training contract and placements have been subject to a one month probationary period followed by a number of months of training, dependent on the nature of the work and its complexity, and the level of prior experience of trainees. Of the 493 trainees who joined up during the 15 years of the GSD, 369 left without any qualifications, 11 left with a level I, 90 completed level II and 23 level III. Since 2011 we have produced much higher numbers in these trades and other areas. Without substantial economic growth we would not be able to deliver any of our manifesto commitments. Without growth that increases government revenue faster than government expenditure we would not generate surpluses and without surpluses we cannot provide reserves, which are ring fenced to ensure that we can protect our standard of living if and when we find ourselves with a less favourable economic environment.
Although again this was considered impossible to achieve, by the end of 2014 the quarterly average was 268 unemployed. The December figure at 228 was at the time the lowest ever. The number of unemployed Gibraltarian registered with the employment services is expected to continue to be below the 300 figure which is what the GSD government considered to be the lowest level reasonably attainable, and recently has been as low as 190. In increasing Gibraltarian training opportunities and employment levels we have ensured that more of our citizens receive some of the benefit of a growing economy. As well as creating more jobs we have increased the national minimum every year even faster than the commitment in our manifesto. The minimum wage was £5.40 an hour when we were elected into office in 2011. It increased to £5.70 in 2012, £6.00 in 2013, £6.15 in 2014, and £6.25 this year! The cumulative increase from £5.40 to £6.25 represents a 15.6% rise in 4 years. Our approach to training, in addition to demand led employer based, has been from the start determined by a scientific analysis of the skills market. There was a commitment to carry out a skills audit of the labour market in the first quarter of 2012 to produce the final action plan from April 2012. This was carried out within the timescale using the only source of information that was available, which was the employment records held by the employment service, which provided a breakdown, by trade and industry of the skills base. Having identified the areas dominated by imported labour from the reports of previous employment surveys and indeed from the analysis explained in 2008 in Parliament by the previous GSD Minister, the work was started in the construction sector. This analysis showed the Gibraltarian percentages in different trades. The new census questionnaire also contained detailed questions on the skills set of the resident population, which could be used to contrast with the data from employment records. The more extensive questionnaire made the work of analysis and tabulation with much more information more time-consuming. I am grateful to the dedicated team at the statistics department for having done an excellent job of providing us with the most detailed analysis of the skills distribution in the economy that we have ever had. This will be very useful for planning the future training for Gibraltar by identifying the areas with the greater skill shortages in terms of local labour. These tables provide job classification with nationality and age breakdowns. The construction-training centre, which was initiated by the GSLP, produced the greatest number of trainees in 1996 when it was opened and progressively less since then, until after 2011. BMAG 40

How it Feels If you’ve never done it – it’s the one thing you really want to know. First, your water doesn’t break in a ceremonious splatter at your feet. Unlike in every movie ever, when a real woman’s water breaks, it usually doesn’t look like a water balloon shattering on concrete. More likely, it’s going to be a slower, more gradual flow - like uncontrollably peeing yourself (lovely). Your water might not break just once. Said “water” - actually, amniotic fluid that forms a protective sac around your baby - can keep trickling all day. And just because your water breaks doesn’t mean you have to race to the hospital. It could still be hours (or even a full day) before contractions actually start and your cervix begins dilating to make way for ‘le bebe’. But you can’t run around with your water broken or have sex once it does because without an amniotic sac protecting him/her, the baby can get an infection. Within 24 hours of your water breaking, labour will either start on its own or doctors will induce labour with drugs. Contractions may be the worst part. You’d think pushing a baby out would be the absolute worst (given that popular “pushing something the size of a watermelon through something the size of a lemon” analogy). But for many people, contractions are the deepest circle of hell. They start out like regular menstrual cramps and you’re all, “Oh, this isn’t even that bad!” But they quickly turn into tiny, evil elf hands grabbing your lower back and lower abdomen, and squeezing them with all of their might until pushing out a baby actually seems like a nice change of pace. If you get an epidural because you are sane, contractions may be the most painful part of giving birth. Getting an epidural is like tripping on a medically approved high. It doesn’t even hurt at all when the anaesthesiologist injects a long needle directly into your spine because he’s so amazing, he numbs the area before hooking you up with a totally free high! The barbaric agony of contractions evaporates within minutes, causing a sweet, sweet numbness in your entire thoracic area. You feel like you have to ‘number two’. You’ll know it’s time to start pushing when you feel an intense desire to run to the bathroom and number two. That’s because a roughly 8lb baby has descended into your uterus and is now pressing on your entire nether region, butt included, trying to get out. You may beg the nurses to let you go to the bathroom but you will not be allowed to do so. Anyway, compared to contractions, getting ready to push out the baby is pressure and discomfort, not stabbing pain, and at this point you really relish the difference. Again, this is if you get an
epidural, which, in my opinion, is such a gift from God that pushing a small human being out of your body actually feels do-able. The doctor may cut ‘just a snip’. This is also known as an episiotomy, which is when the midwife/doctor cuts a lady’s perineum to help get the baby out (never Google this, BTW). But friends of mine who got an epidural did not even feel their episiotomy. And by the time it happens, you don’t really care, even if they have to ‘vacuum’ your baby out. You have to deliver the placenta after the main event of getting the baby out. Someone may casually say “one more push” and it is all very low-key because after birthing a small human, pushing out a small liver-like thing seems like the ultimate ‘whatever’. Oh, and there will probably be stitches at this point, thanks to the snipping or the area might have torn on its own because watermelon-lemon. You’ll probably have to wear a ‘mummy nappy’ too. This is either a maxi pad or an actual diaper packed with ice and tucked into your underwear post-birth to provide some relief and deal with bleeding. You’ll also essentially have your period for a good six weeks after birth. More maxi pads will be necessary… Yay! A squirt bottle is advised as a handy accessory to toilet paper. Technically called a “peri bottle” - short for perineum irrigation, you may choose to use it to squirt warm water onto your intimate areas after going to the bathroom to ensure, what with the stitches and all, that the area is truly clean without having to roughly wipe yourself with toilet paper. You will block all of this out roughly three months after birth. Otherwise, who would ever have a second (much less a third) child? Looking back, birth is like a weirdly realistic dream that you can only vaguely remember or a crazy, adrenaline-fuelled dance recital performance in which you blacked out under all of the lights and cheering. What remains is the baby you love so much.
