ARTS CENTRE - KINGSTON

This studio consisted of an Arts Centre in Kingston, already a cultural precinct, the building had to respond to many historic, cultural and new developments within the foreshore. The building itself was very programmatic. The Arts Centre comprised of a 120 seat performing arts auditorium, a multi-use common room, and artists’ studios with wet/dry work areas, a multi-use room and a cafÊ, with the cafÊ and the multi-use room to be designed to allow flexible use for cabaret or dinner/theatre shows. There were many opportunities to introduce market days and other activities in association with the bus depot markets and glassworks. The foyer became the most significant space in two ways, it became my main circulation spine as well as the most important social interaction within my building, either waiting within the foyer area for a show or moving through the space, the foyer became an integral part of my design. Materiality also was a key part of my design, different materials on the outside represented program on the inside, concrete being program, timber main circulation and channel glass as secondary circulation. The master plan was not part of the brief but to I saw this as a necessary component to linking the Kingston foreshore to become a cultural precinct.





RELIEF AND CARVING

The key to the studio project consisted of a sequence of organised elements broken down to its simplest form. The solution needed to provide: point, line, plane and volume over three stages. The first stage used horizontal movement on a flat plane only, to use only light construction and to have shallow relief, through this the light construction would incorporate a frame element and shallow relief in the form of a basin or water element. The second stage used horizontal movement in a shifted plane where medium relief was evident by using low lying walls or sunken courtyards these were to be made of heavy construction. The use of heavy and light construction in the second and first was to be reflected in the final stage through two towers or observatories for one person. The last stage through vertical circulation and program volumes are used to create deep relief. One tower was to be “light” and the other “heavy” using the same materiality and language in the first and second respectively. For a singular person, I interpreted this as a place of reflection and isolation. I believe that the Canberra brickworks quarry related directly to this concept. The large, open, unused and overgrown quarry created an opportunity for a site (which wasn’t necessary for the project) which would drive my design. The isolated and eerie nature of the old quarry was a suitable location for my project, over one side it had large relief to accommodate constraints put on the ground plane and access to a road for future development after the project was done. The location of the site dictated my approach to the project, materiality became an important element in my design, and the quarry produced an iconic red brick used in early Canberra construction. To capitalise on this, I explored relief and carving the earth, exposing the red clay, I used this and the red brick as my heavy material. The heavy tower’s principal concept is to have volumes within volumes that displayed deep relief; this can be seen in my sections and diagrams. Not only did I use voids to create double height spaces but my program stacked in programmatic volumes, showing circulation, program, and green areas within the heavy tower. Two stories above the ground plane, the tower sat in the landscape demonstrating heaviness compared to my light tower, this comparison is expressed through the asymmetry in the overall composition. The heavy tower has a subterranean level where the sleeping area is, expressing the notion of “cave”. The language for the tower was derived from the hearth in my second stage. The hearth features and “cut out” were repeated, scaled up and of the same materiality, to make the link from the second to the third stage. For aesthetic reasons the gutter was concealed in the wall due to the parapet and flat roof construction. Emphasis on stair construction allowing light to pass through and the use of passive solar shading in the green volume allowed me to play with light in different times of the day and year.

URBAN BATH HOUSE BRADDON

in this project, the key aim was to create a private bathhouse in a very public urban context and a restaurant that activated the street. From the start of the design the overlap language has used to organise the spaces within the building. The overlap in the site analysis explored through planes showed how an overlap creates a higher intensity. from this, volumetric studies showed how when two volumes intersected they created darker volumes. this layering of volumes expresses how the building is organised by the overlap in terms of privacy. To see the overlap within the building, layers of walls and screens at different opacities were incorporated to produce darker volumes within volumes. this language of the overlap was created throughout the whole project and can be seen in the urban park designed as a place for workers around braddon to use in lunch breaks or a relief from the busy braddon street. the street facade is constructed by a series of vertical elements with the outdoor bar/pub raised above the ground creating a gateway into urban park/entrance to the bathhouse

URBAN BATH HOUSE BRADDON - MID REVIEW (option 2)

This is my mid-review design solution for the braddon urban bath house, this design focused on the separation of mem and women and the overlap that they created







MOUNT AINSLIE - FIRE TOWER

This Technology project was finished along side my Gradutaion Studio 3.2. The structure of the fire tower is comprised of two fundamental components. The faรงade made of precast concrete units and a stair core. The precast unit has a number of advantages in construction that would suit our location. Mount Ainslie is situated in Mount Majura Nature Reserve, so minimal impact to the surrounding environment is of the upmost importance, as each unit is precast offsite this enables short construction time on site with minimal disturbance to nature. The four precast concrete units would be craned and fastened on top of one another, joined by a combination of nonshrink grout and steel reinforcing. The tower sits on a piers that will be driven into bedrock, a cast in situ footing slab is then poured, in which the units sits on. Once in place another cast in situ slab is poured in the interior of the bottom unit where the stair start. The units are reinforced by a steel cage which are strengthen by horizontal reinforcing, the units are held in place by a series of counter weights to counteract the slip. The stair core is modular in construction, comprised of six identical flights of stairs. Each flight is precast off site and is fastened to the interior walls of the unit. Not only is the core the means of getting to the viewing platform, the stairs are the sole interior furnishing which produces an opportunity to create a feature within the tower.

Under DJAS design, I completed the 3d model using Sketchup Pro and with SU podium I created base renderings, completing post production work in Photoshop.

The brief was to add a master wing to the house, creating a new master bedroom with walk in robe and ensuite connecting to the ground floor. Lower ground floor added a new office and bike storage. Under DJAS design, I completed documentation using Revit.
