STAGE FOR A COMMUNITY BRYAN, TEXAS

PARTNER PROJECT WITH CARMEN TORRES PROFESSOR - MARCEL ERMINY STUDIO 7 My partner and I envisioned this community theater as a new city center and public stage for the small city of Bryan. Cities are in a constant state of metamorphosis, changing through growth and development into a new environment across time. Lewis Mumford’s essay “What Is a City?” describes a city as a theater of social action. We believe this social interaction is the catalyst for the metamorphic development of a city. Thus, through their metamorphosis, cities become stages for the performance of their inhabitants and buildings. This performance is acted out through urban growth, learning, and community interaction. The City of Bryan in Central Texas contains a unique environment. Although Bryan is a small town, its proximity to College Station provides a constant influx of visitors, especially on the first Friday of every month when artisans and musicians set up on the streets to perform their craft. Carmen and I sought to elevate this community involvement and fold the urban performance of the city into the professional performance of a black box theater. Because we consider social action the foundation of metamorphosis for a city, we questioned closing the building off from the public after hours. Instead we chose to elevate the theater and provide a basement for the public to use at all hours. This required careful consideration of public and private zoning and a focus to generate spaces that would foster community interaction.

During the design process we readily chose to create a basement with a large staircase that could double as a small impromptu amphitheater for public performances and street artists. This drop in elevation provided an opportunity for a unique experience as a visitor returns to the ground floor. Two 1:20 ramps travel the length of the building and provide circulation from the lobby to the amphitheater. A skylight above the ramp casts its light on a wall art installation, generating incredible texture and shadow.

Each level demonstrates a dedication to a clean layout that communicates the public or private nature of each space. The multipurpose room on the first floor opens into the amphitheater to dramatically increase the space available to the public and facilitate the flow of crowds through the theater. The second and third floors contain support functions for the theater organized on the west with the public space contained to the east.

MARKET AMPLIFIED BARCELONA, SPAIN

PROFESSOR - JORDI MANSILLA STUDIO 6 The proposed project is a new market for the historical Barceloneta neighborhood on the city’s coast. Although on the coast, the site is separated from the beach by an elevated road. Not only was the beach not visible from the site, the beach, waves, and public could not be heard. I questioned the lack of auditory cues from the beach. The design was realized as a result of operative mapping. The drastic difference in sound atmosphere was readily apparent when the decibel levels of each type of sound were mapped against each other. This map of sound allowed me to determine operations that would take place at the intersections of sound types. Building blocks were developed along an equilateral grid to perform funneling, reflecting, and blocking operations to direct the sound from the beach into the site. The blocks’ triangle format allowed development of a unique structural system with inherent lateral stability.

SKINNY DOUBLE HOUSE PHOENIX, ARIZONA

PROFESSOR - SARAH DEYONG STUDIO 5

Working as a siteless intervention, the skinny double house provides two living spaces within a thin row house plot measuring 100’ x 32’. Instead of interpreting each house as a series of rooms and functions, each space was considered as a form to be folded, twisted, pushed, scaled, carved, and otherwise developed. This technique of form creation yielded interesting spaces that are both beautiful as well as practical for the residents. The two houses sport clients with drastically different interests and distinct needs. One client is a bicycle racer with two young children and a bike shop. The other client is a musician couple in their late fifties who teach music out of their home. The houses are envisioned as trapezoids that embrace each other. A central dividing wall creates the primary axis for the buildings. The dividing wall is inclined into the musicians’ space to provide acoustic benefit to the recital space and allow sunlight into the courtyard.

SKINNY DOUBLE HOUSE The musicians’ house is set 4’-6” below grade to allow the floors of each house to stagger from each other and help prevent acoustic transfer. Entering either house you are presented with a double height balcony that provides views from the upper stories down to the bottom floor. Each house is organized based on its need for light. Bathrooms are found at the core of the building while stairwells are along either edge. Two story window slots provide light into each stairwell.

VERNACULAR TEXAS HOUSE CONCAN, TEXAS

PROFESSOR - LOGAN WAGNER STUDIO 4

This residence, located in the hot climate of Concan, Texas seeks to act as a mediator between the resident and climate, encouraging outdoor use through vernacular design solutions. Vernacular design utilizes historical methods for passive heating and cooling, often at reduced cost or with materials on the site. The house is organized in slots that have been slid past each other to generate outdoor spaces with deep overhangs. A thick wall about the center provides the visual axis for the house as well as providing the cue for the split between public and private space. The deep patios feature large sliding doors to allow the house to be opened up to prevailing breezes. Thick rammed earth walls provide passive cooling by protecting the building from infiltrating heat during the day and releasing stored heat during the cool nights. Clerestory provides much of the light necessary for daily activities, reducing energy consumption from light fixtures. Finally, a rainwater cistern tucked behind the house has enough capacity to hold a two month’s supply of water.

INVOLVE THE AGING BRYAN, TEXAS

PARTNER PROJECT WITH HEATH BOTTOMS PROFESSOR - SUSAN RODIEK STUDIO 3 In modern society the elderly are often neglected and ignored, relegated to live out their last years in nursing homes isolated from the community. Evidence suggests this approach to elderly care robs the community of the incredible benefits the aging provide. When the elderly are given opportunity to contribute to their community they become healthier, and those they interact with gain invaluable social and developmental skills. This partner project sought to provide a community center for senior citizens in downtown Bryan. An empty plot of land was selected in an undeveloped region of the city, providing a blank slate. Our design centered on accessibility and circulation, relating convenient, easy circulation to social and community interaction. The center must welcome all visitors, especially the elderly. To reach this goal, we designed the main entry on a diagonal axis across the site. This axis opens into a wide corridor that invites visitors to wander in and gather for conversation. Windows into the pool, multipurpose room, and game rooms invite interaction between the visitors. A community center branded for senior citizens may suffer from a lack of interest from younger age groups. To encourage use of the center across age divisions, we included a cafe on the main corner as well as a small community movie theater.

ERGONOMIC ROCKING CHAIR CNC FABRICATION

PROFESSOR - RODNEY HILL STUDIO 1

Unique furniture design often comes at the cost of comfort or is set at a prohibitive price. Built from a single sheet of plywood and designed with ergonomic dimensions, this rocking chair avoids both pitfalls. I developed the design by tracing the curve necessary for proper lumbar support while one is seated in a lounge chair. Offsetting the lines provided an ergonomic framework that defines the chair back and front leg. The center of gravity had to be carefully calculated on the rocker to provide the most comfortable seating angle. In addition, the rocker radius is a key component to provide an enjoyable gliding sensation. Two prototypes were built to confirm dimensions and modify the CNC file as necessary. The final chair was built with 3/4 birch plywood and assembled without the use of glue or nails.

AUDUBON SOCIETY LOGO BRAZOS VALLEY AUDUBON SOCIETY 2011 COLLEGE STATION, TX

The Brazos Valley Audubon Society commissioned me to design their new logo in the Spring of 2011 after viewing my sketch of a Blue Headed Vireo. Through meetings with the society board we determined to base the logo design on a Carolina Wren. Using their expertise and knowledge of bird posture, I developed a logo that utilized negative space to imply the bird’s body. The logo was unanimously adopted at the end of the spring.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

STANFORD PATIO GARDEN MORNINGSTAR LANDSCAPES 2009 AUSTIN, TX The Stanfords contacted me in the summer of 2009 to commission the redesign of their backyard landscape. Their duplex was located in an upscale neighborhood in downtown Austin. Although the yard was small, it featured significant shade from a large elm tree, a valuable asset for hot Texas summers. To maximize the outdoor capabilities of their backyard, I developed a flagstone patio for their grill and seating area. A trellis along the back fence screens their back porch from the neighbors, and a separated dog run in the corner allows their pets to join them outdoors yet stay out from underfoot.

AUSTIN RIDGE SOUTHWEST JACKSON GALLOWAY ASSOCIATES 2013 AUSTIN, TX A large church in Austin purchased an older church property in Southwest Austin, and commissioned Jackson Galloway to renovate the existing building. Their primary goal was to emulate the architecture style on their main campus. Supervised and guided by the firm principal, Bob Galloway, I performed the role of a project architect. I created schematic designs based on the client’s needs and developed the construction document permit set. Adapting to an existing structure presented several challenges that required research and collaboration to develop a successful project. Along with developing the construction drawings I was responsible for site visits to document existing conditions and for coordinating efforts with the contractor and client.
