Woodmill’s 17 acre site offers its own lake for our water sports, two climbing towers, a variety of high ropes activities and other activities such as orienteering, archery and low ropes. This variety of activities mean we can cater for a wide range of needs. Our sessions are charged at a per group rate and start from just £79 for a half day visit for up to 12 participants. That’s equivalent to £6.60 per person! Woodmill’s secure grounds also hold a campsite area and self catering kitchen and can include all camping equipment you will need* to make your trip into a residential visit.

Families Woodmill isn’t just for the kids. We run a variety of sessions throughout the year to get the whole family active together.

Family Active Adventure Every school holiday we run our Active Adventure for young people and often hear parents saying: “I wish I could have a go!” Now you can! Family Summer Camp
At the end of the school summer holidays we are running our first family summer camp. This overnight experience combines some of Woodmill’s favourite activities along with a nights camping in a beautiful and secure location in the heart of Southampton. Activities will include archery, climbing, canoeing/ kayaking and crate stacking. In the evening Woodmill will provide a BBQ and a campfire for parents and children to relax and share stories from the day.

Active Adventure Schools out at Woodmill so why not come and join us for an Active Adventure. This multi activity programme provides a range of different adventurous activities each day. We run the Active Adventure days during all school holidays throughout the year.

DISCOVER DISCOVERY Sessions Woodmill’s Discovery courses are a great way to come and try a new sport, see the centre and meet some of the team. We run discovery sessions every Saturday alternating between Archery, Climbing and Paddlesports. At the end of the session your instructor will talk you through the next steps should you want to continue taking part. All specialist equipment is included and sessions are available for ages 8 upwards (under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult). £10 per person.

Discover Climbing Discover the excitement of rock climbing using Woodmill’s artificial climbing towers. This 1 hour session will soon have you scaling the wall as well as learning the skill of belaying, (operating a climber’s safety rope).
Discover Archery This 1 hour introduction to the Olympic sport of archery takes place on Woodmill’s covered archery range. After a short safety brief you will soon be trying to hit the target and hopefully the gold!
Discover Paddling This 1 hour session is the perfect way to discover the world of canoeing and kayaking. Your instructor will teach you the basics of boat control and deliver some great activities to ensure you have as much fun a possible at the same time. Woodmill will provide all specialist equipment and clothing that you will require.
DISCOVERy DAYS woodmill runs discovery days throughout the year. These days give the local community and people from further afield the chance to come and enjoy Woodmill’s activities and the beautiful grounds. LEARN TO Paddle
learn to paddle Age 16+ Woodmill’s learn to paddle course is designed for beginner paddlers who would like to be able to paddle their boat safely and proficiently. Whether you have completed one of our discover paddling courses or have just bought your first boat, our fully qualified instructors will introduce you to the foundation skills required for paddlesports and get you to grips with the basics of boat control. You can bring along your own boat for the day or take advantage of the range of boats Woodmill has to offer. The day will follow the syllabus for the British Canoe Union 1 star award meaning that on successful completion you will get a nationally recognised certificate. Course costs £99 and can include all the equipment you require.

Explore Archery is the next step on from the Discover Archery session, runs on a Sunday for 2 1⁄2 hours and you will continue the skills you have learnt. These sessions have lots of instruction, practice and progression and is the next step in this Olympic sport.

The BCU 2 star is for paddlers who have completed our learn to paddle course (BCU 1 star or equal ability) and have experience in both kayaks and canoes.

The award is an improvement award that helps a paddler develop fundamental paddlesports skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. The award is obtained by taking the assessment in both kayak and canoe. The 2 star will be run over 2 days giving paddlers plenty of opportunity to practice in a variety of craft.

BCU 3 star Woodmill offers training and assessment in the following 3 star disciplines:

Our 3 star courses are run over 2 days. Both days of the course will be learning days and assessment will happen continuously throughout the course. Those who fulfil the requirements of the BCU 3 star syllabus including the required pre requisites at the end of the 2 days will achieve their 3 star award. Some of these courses are held away from the centre to find the correct water conditions. In these cases, transport and overnight accommodation are not included in the price.

BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT) The BCU FSRT course is designed for paddlers and coaches irrespective of their chosen craft. The objective is to teach simple and safe rescue skills that can be applied appropriately. This course is ideal for those wanting to move onto looking after other paddlers or those that just want that piece of mind when out on the water. To attend the course you should hold the 2 star award or be of equal ability. The course will involve rescuing a variety of kayaks and canoes.

BCU UKCC Level 1 certificate in coaching paddlesports This 4 day training and assessment course is the first step on the paddlesport coaching pathway. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of good coaching practice and help you to understand and coach technical and tactical aspects of your sport. The level 1 coach is a multi boat award so candidates should be proficient in both canoe and kayak. Woodmill is a perfect venue for the coaching awards due to our large range of boats, multiple paddling venues and excellent classroom facilities.

Sea trips – Old Harry’s rocks, Hengistbury head, Lulworth Cove, The Solent and Southampton water. Touring trips – River Hamble, River Wye, River Severn. White water trips – River Dart, River Usk, River Barle.

River Wye Canoe Expedition This 2 day trip down the River Wye is a great introduction to canoe expeditions. We will be self contained throughout the trip carrying all camping equipment with us and will be camping at sites with basic facilities on the river bank. Participants of the expedition will be invited to attend an introduction evening at Woodmill, prior to the expedition, where you will get the chance to meet your instructors and the other members of the group before setting out. Price includes: All equipment required including tents, stoves and gas. Return travel from Woodmill and campsite fees. Price does not include: Food for the trip, sleeping bags.

Whether you are a first timer or experienced hand we have the largest range of hire equipment in the South. Choose to take out one of our Sit-on-tops, Tandems, Kayak, Canoe or Stand-up paddle boards for an hour or more at your own leisure. We’ll show you the ropes and make sure you are happy before taking to the water. If you’re new don’t worry, you can book a learn to paddle course. Woodmill is a great day out for the family so come on down and see Southampton from the water. Example as of the trip destinations we have run previously are:

Our unique projects and initiatives help us to celebrate all of the great things that happen in our local communities, and ensure that we are able to give something back through creating and supporting projects that make a difference to the activity rates and health of the nation.
Our paddleabilty programme exists to give everyone the chance to canoe or kayak regardless of their disability. By creating challenging, fun and rewarding sessions adapted to suit each participants needs these weekly sessions have contributed to so many peoples lives. This is one of our key community programmes and is supported by dedicated volunteers.
Special needs Getting out in a boat is a great sport for everyone and at Woodmill we are proud to work with local groups with disabilities, schools and youth organisations to offer opportunities for people to learn to paddle. We have some specialist equipment which allows us to teach those who would normally not be able to participate because of a disability or additional need.
