A charity on a mission.
As a registered Charity, Active Nation is passionately committed to fulfilling its mission ‘to persuade the nation to be active’. At our heart is a belief that we must excite our communities and ignite their enthusiasm for sport and exercise.
Our Initiatives
We’ve got a lot going on in the name of Sport AND Exercise! A number of unique projects and initiatives help us to celebrate all of the great things that happen in our local communities, and ensure that we are able to give something back through creating and supporting projects that make a difference to the activity rates and health of the nation. Below are some of our most important initiatives.
sailability Sailing is one of the very few sports in which able-bodied sailors and disabled sailors can participate on equal terms. Sailability is an RYA initiative aimed at making sailing more accessible to those with disabilities.
Paddleability Within the Southampton City area there are limited clubs and programmes offering canoeing and kayaking to those with a disability. Due to the success of the sailability scheme running at Southampton Water Activities Centre, and through listening to supporter feedback and requests, we realised that there was a need and demand to introduce a Paddleability session.
LOCAL HEROES Local Heroes is our way of saluting and applauding the great people who dedicate their time to making a difference through sport and exercise. They might be a dedicated sports leader or coach, volunteering their services to do something good for their local area, or even a successful sports star who inspires other to get involved. Local Heroes is our way of saying thank you!
KIDS TRYATHLON Ok, so you’re probably asking yourself the question ‘So what is a Kids Tryathlon’, I guess the answer is, well, they’re Brilliant! That’s the only word to describe them. And before you point out the obvious spelling mistake…all will be explained! We launched the concept in 2011 as an opportunity for us to engage young people into sport and exercise. The purpose of the events were to help us shape their behaviour, attitudes and enthusiasm towards physical activity, with the hope of helping them commit to being active longer term. And it was so brilliant, that we decided to make it an annual series of events.
SPORTING CHANCE That word ‘opportunity’ is what Active Nation’s Sporting Chance project is all about. We want to increase the number of opportunities available for people with physical and mental disabilities to take part in sport and exercise, assist clubs and individuals in doing so, and eradicate any barriers that are preventing their participation.
RISING STARS Rising Stars aims to provide practical support to assist talented young sports people in their respective quests to fulfil their potential, and help alleviate any factors that are stifling their progress. We look to identify those young people who have already reached a particularly talented level within the context of their chosen sports and help them to progress further in whatever way we can. This might be through the provision of pathways into suitable clubs, courses or programmes, or through a financial bursary that gives them better coaching, equipment and facilities for training. You name it, we’ll be there to offer a helping hand.
Give your child a birthday to remember!
Saturdays, Sundays, after school and evenings. Activities last between 1-2 hours depending on the activity and prices range from ÂŁ5-15 per person. Catering options available.
