Double trouble in this issue of B4 with the outgoing Leader of Oxford City Council, Bob Price, sharing cover duties with the recently appointed High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, Richard Venables – so if you haven’t got one, you’ll have the other! Bob has been a crucial part of Oxford’s impressive economic development and performance as Leader and you can find out more about Bob’s hopes for the future in the face of some obvious challenges for us all. Another familiar Oxfordshire face is that of Richard Venables and if you haven’t seen the new High Sheriff in running kit, hockey kit, suit or even tights, now is your chance to do so. With a formidable year ahead of him, if you had to put your money on anyone getting through a hefty series of official engagements compounded by the odd Marathon here and there, then Venables is your man. You might be reading this before, at or after our annual Business in Oxford event, where we will be launching our new initiative to support Oxfordshire in its next crucial phase of growth: “Oxford & Oxfordshire – World Class & Connected’. We feel well placed to develop THE business to business network for Oxfordshire businesses and have already built an excellent community representing all sectors and all sizes of business. However, in this age of collaboration, together we can do more to help Oxfordshire face its challenges and maintain its impressive economic development. If you would like to join the community, we would be delighted to hear from you. Read more in this issue. As part of our World Class initiative, we introduce B4 Values with Grant Hayward from Collaborent, essentially a better way to do business which I am sure will ring true with many of you. We also meet the Freeth’s Family Law team, find out about Wills and LPA’s with Hedges and Knights 1759 also expands its team. BIO2018 Thought Leaders, Think, inspire & Create explain how engaged and inspired people drive customer value. We say hello to new B4 members, Vistage and meet Handlesbanken’s Michelle Arnold. There is so much more to get your teeth into in this issue of B4….but don’t forget that GDPR comes into effect on 25th May, how could you possibly forget?! Enjoy Issue 52

Oxford and Oxfordshire were top of the 2017 Demos-PwC Good Growth for Cities index and the 2018 Arcadis ‘Investing in Britain’ report names Oxford as the 2nd best city in the UK for Growth Potential. As Oxfordshire’s leading business networking community, B4 aims to play a key role in this growth. Written by: Richard Rosser We’re working towards building B4 as the platform for business to business communications and profile raising in Oxfordshire and by co-ordinating through B4, we not only believe that Oxfordshire has a bright future, but that we can show the rest of the world that businesses in Oxfordshire are united in their vision to be ‘World Class & Connected’. At BIO2018 on 23rd May, we will be airing “Oxford & Oxfordshire – World Class & Connected”, a promotional video supported by an online report designed to get our message across ‘support B4 and Oxfordshire’s growth’. We want to demonstrate not only the diversity of organisations committed to B4 but also the extent of their commitment and how this joined up approach to doing business in our county is helping to drive growth for the future. The B4 community is growing and below we include some messages of support for our initiative to get Oxfordshire’s business community connected. Would you like to be involved? If you would like to receive a copy of our report or join the B4 community, please call the team on 01865 742211 and we will be pleased to send you a link to the report and / or discuss B4 with you (please note link not available until 28th May). “Owen Mumford has been based in Woodstock since our inception more than 65 years ago and we are proud to be a part of a business community which is known for being a centre of world leading innovation and knowledge. “As a medical device manufacturer we benefit from access to a highly skilled workforce and the university connection which drives research excellence, particularly in science and technology.

www.b4-business.com

“We recognise the benefits of a collaborative approach to boost investor confidence and to develop an infrastructure that will drive further growth. Therefore Owen Mumford supports B4’s ‘World Class & Connected’ initiative which will benefit businesses of all sizes across the county.” Jarl Severn, Managing Director, Owen Mumford “The next decade will undoubtedly see greater changes to the landscape of the Oxfordshire business community than at any time in its history. The opportunities available and the appetite to realise them among the various stakeholders mean that it could be a transformational few years. It’s vital therefore that the business community work together to ensure that the challenges we face will be met so that the huge potential benefits can be delivered to Oxfordshire. The B4 World Class and Connected initiative can be a key component of this drive and we look forward to supporting them in the coming years.” David Tighe, Corporate Partner, Penningtons Manches ”Great county, connectivity and access to brilliant businesses and people. Surrounded by some stunning countryside and living with a pulse for growth. “Supporting the “World Class & Connected” Initiative simply makes good business sense, why wouldn’t you support it and stand next to the other amazing businesses in the county?” Cath Convery, Learning and Development, Explosive Learning Solutions Ltd “With a world-leading University and global brand, Oxfordshire is ideal for business success. Here, cutting edge innovation thrives beside heritage and tourism. Culturally and geographically Oxfordshire

is an outstanding region for high-tech companies, as well as those in retail, services, industry, and leisure. “Oxfordshire is profitable. Employment is among the UK’s highest GVA per capita, and business support is strong. Living costs reflect the extensive benefits of this potent region. “B4 is a visionary driver of the essential connectivity that makes Oxfordshire a highly successful and enjoyable community of business leaders and professionals who can act locally and think globally. Oxford University backs the World Class & Connected initiative” Matthew Smart, University of Oxford “As an OxLEP non-exec board member and a partner in a local Oxford business, I see connecting businesses in Oxfordshire as an essential part of designing the right blueprint for Oxfordshire’s businesses for the future, not just for today. We need the right local skills, education and training, housing and transport, as well as the right environment (such as the niche clusters situated in science parks) to be fit for the future. OxLEP engages with local and central government as well as departmental agencies and can give these concerns a real voice that can make a difference. “Businesses need to engage with each other and the OxLEP for that to work. B4 Community News Another Year of Growth for Freeths Solicitors Freeths Solicitors, Oxford’s leading law firm, announces another year of growth and development. The Oxford office has grown its headcount by 18% since last year having recruited 28 lawyers, including two partner hires, into the office’s various legal departments. Promotions at all levels have also been made, including at associate and senior associate level. Freeths continues to recruit high calibre lawyers as it deals with the high demand from Oxfordshire businesses and private individuals for its legal services not just in its core areas such as corporate and commercial, Wills, trusts and probate, but also in specialist areas including IP, data security, tax, environmental, planning, and construction law. The Legal 500, The Client’s Guide to the UK Legal Profession 2017 edition, one of the UK’s leading law directories says, “Freeths LLP ‘provides the quality of service that would be expected of a Magic Circle firm’…. The demand for Freeths’ legal services is not just limited to Oxford. Nationally, Freeths recently announced staff numbers had increased significantly across all 12 offices, going from 784 to 844. It has also been another year of continued financial growth for Freeths LLP with a 9.5% increase in turnover compared to last year.

Freeths have had a presence in the majority of the main cities across the UK for many years. In April 2018, they were pleased to announce the opening of their twelfth office in Liverpool. Sarah Foster, Managing Partner of Freeths in Oxford, commented: “We are very proud that we have continued to grow organically and attract high

calibre lawyers. The financial results for Freeths are testament to the work our teams, locally and nationally, put in throughout the year. We recognise this would not be achievable without everyone’s valuable input, so all staff across the firm will therefore be rewarded with a bonus payment amounting to 7% of salaries.” www.freethsoxford.co.uk

It’s a win, win for both parties and we can’t wait to help B4 as they continue to grow and provide the B4 community with even more exciting initiatives.” Richard Rosser comments: “As we continue to develop B4 in an exciting period of growth, it’s vital that our foundations are as solid as possible. Jon Silversides, Partner, Commercial, Carter Jonas with MEPC’s Roz Bird, Commercial Director at Silverstone Park

Carter Jonas has been appointed as the regional letting agent for Silverstone Park. The 130acre estate sits at the heart of the Silverstone Technology Cluster and Carter Jonas’ experience

of the region – across the Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford Corridor – proved instrumental in it being awarded the contract by Silverstone Park developer MEPC. Jon Silversides, Partner, Commercial, Carter Jonas, said: “We are delighted to have been selected by MEPC as regional agents for this iconic high profile instruction and very much look forward to both promoting the existing and new schemes coming forward as well as ensuring that Silverstone Park’s offer is more widely recognised.

“Whilst the appeal of this location to the motorsport community is obvious, we believe that the offering here will be of interest to a much wider scope of occupiers for either geographic reasons given the Park’s central role in the Cambridge-Milton KeynesOxford corridor or the attraction of the locally based and highly skilled precision engineering workforce which, in turn, has a cross-over into a myriad of technologies.” www.carterjonas.co.uk

A TRUE LEADER

Oxford was last year ranked, for the second consecutive year, by PwC as the UK’s highest ranking city in their recent Good Growth for Cities report. Although it’s easy to pick holes in what is wrong with Oxford, it’s just as easy to overlook the long list of positives. Many of the problems Oxford faces are a by-product of growth. Bob Price has been all too familiar with balancing the growth of Oxford with the challenges that growth brings and is one of the main reasons behind why Oxford is such a leading example for other UK cities. B4’s Richard Rosser met with the outgoing Leader of Oxford City Council to reflect on his action packed and ultimately glowing contribution to Oxford’s economic development.

Written by: Richard Rosser Photography by: Rob Scotcher

Bob Price is the city’s longest serving councillor and has led Oxford City Council since 2008. When announcing his retirement as leader in 2017 he said that he was turning 70 years old in May 2018 and it was ‘a good age to retire’. Bob was also quoted as saying: “After 35 years representing my local community in Grandpont, New Hinksey and St Ebbes, and 12 years as the Leader of the Labour group, it feels like a good moment for a change of pace. If I am averagely lucky, I hope to be able to find more time over the next decade doing more of the many things that I enjoy.” Oxford has been more than averagely lucky to have had the benefit of Bob’s wisdom and support for the past 35 years and all of us at B4 would like to thank Bob for his support for B4 and the Business in Oxford event which we established together five years ago. So what have been the stand out moments for Bob in his time at Oxford City Council? “My tenure as leader coincided exactly with the period of austerity following the financial crash of 2008. In that time, we have lost £8 million of government grants and the whole context has been one of cuts in the public sector. I think our greatest achievement as a council has always been to ride through that period, to build a very financially stable council, and to replace the income lost in government grants. We have worked hard to change the culture of the council and to create a very strong, customer orientated organisation. I’m quite proud of what has been achieved over that 10 year period, and I think I’m handing on a strong legacy to the next generation.” The Council’s achievements have also been recognised nationally, as Bob explains. “We won the Council of the Year Award in 2014 and we won the Council Service Provider of the Year Award in 2015. That was certainly an indication of what we had achieved in that period. There has been a significant change in the way the council works and is organised, and what we’ve achieved reflects

26

those changes. More recently we have created two wholly owned subsidiary companies which will be trading in housing and in the wider service sector - a completely new culture.” During Bob’s time at the Council he has seen and met thousands of people, but I ask him what the stand out moments were. “There are a lot of memorable moments, but going back to when I was Deputy Lord Mayor and the Freedom of the City ceremony for Nelson Mandela, that ranks very highly. President Mandela was with us for about three and a half hours and I was on my own with him for an hour or so in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour. To have that experience was pretty remarkable. But, of course, there are a lot of other highlights. Opening Westgate last October was a great experience. Having seen it through the planning and development process, finally walking in to see how impressive it is certainly ranks as a very memorable moment. “I think, from a personal point of view, getting the Housing and Growth deal with government across the line after seven or eight months of really difficult negotiations has been a tremendous achievement for the whole county. We are recognised by government as a ‘can do’ county with huge economic potential, excellent co-operation between the councils and we are achieving a lot together, so that’s been, again, a real breakthrough that we will build on for the next ten years.” Many B4 readers will be all too familiar with Oxford’s growing pains: an over-burdened transport structure; a rising cost of living; shortage of skilled labour; social problems such as homelessness and a widening gap between the haves and the have nots. But we are fortunate, when compared to most other areas in the UK, to enjoy the riches of a county which we all too often take for granted. I ask Bob what he feels makes Oxford unique. “I think the thing about Oxford that makes it rather special is the fact that it’s the city in the UK with the

highest proportion of people with high level qualifications. This means that it’s a place with a lot of people with a good understanding of what’s going on in the city and a wish to have their point of view heard. They are happy to challenge their council and the other organisations in the city, but at the same time they are willing and able to put time and effort into our many voluntary organisations. When I was Lord Mayor I was really impressed by the range and the quality of what the voluntary sector does in the city. The combination of intelligence, engagement, commitment and compassion makes Oxford a very special place compared to many other parts of the country.” Bob also acknowledges that there’s been a real step change in the way that businesses interact with the voluntary sector and how it engages, not just from the point of view of the senior members of businesses, but also their employees, more actively with social enterprises and charities. “Looking back on the ten years I’ve been leader and just before that as well, there’s been a sea change in the relationship been business and the rest of the community. It’s not just the voluntary sector that has seen that difference. The level of charitable giving, the level of volunteering, the level of integration of objectives between business and the wider sectors of charity and voluntary groups has been remarkable in that ten year period. You’ve only got to go to events like Business in Oxford to see the range and quality of businesses engaging with the wider community. It has been a very important period of change in the county.” As already highlighted, Oxford ranked first for city growth in the UK in the 2017 PwC report and second for growth potential in the recent Arcadis report. But whilst Oxford has a lot going for it, I ask Bob what his concerns are for the future of Oxford in coping with and managing growth.

B4 lead Bob Price and B4 CEO Richard Rosser

“You mentioned earlier the issue of transport and I think a really big challenge as we expand as a county in employment, in population and in economic growth is to ensure that people can move around in a non-polluting way. The concern I have is that we won’t get the level of resource, despite government wishing to provide that, which will genuinely allow us to tackle those transport issues. We will have to find ways round those constraints,. “The second issue is one regarding social policy. There is a rising level of homelessness throughout the country and cities like Oxford, which are relatively affluent, are attractive to people looking for support and help. We have a very good provision for homeless people in the city but we will need a significant intervention by the government to really defeat homelessness to stop that social evil continuing. “Linked to that is the drug problem. The police are doing a great job in tackling drug dealing, but they lack resources and the challenge is growing.. So, transport, drugs and homelessness are, in my opinion, some of the biggest challenges for the city in the next few years..” Bob and I talked about his final days in office post the elections and how he would feel in the aftermath, leaving meetings with tasks to do which he wouldn’t be in a position to influence. Rest assured Bob will have his means of getting his point across! “I know that there are ways of getting my views across after I’ve left the council. There are lots of very open channels for consultation and after so many years, I have a lot of good contacts across the city. So ,if I do feel strongly about something, I’m pretty certain I can get my views into the mix!. On planning issues in particular, I’m keen to work with the Civic Society as they have a very constructive voice in dialogue with the council about planning matters.” Bob will undoubtedly be a man in demand and will have been asked to join countless committees, boards and support groups. what plans does Bob have as he prepares for life post Oxford City Council? “I’m joining the board of both the Pegasus Youth Theatre and the Oxford Playhouse so I’m looking forward to a deeper involvement with the arts world. I am also continuing in my role as a Development Trustee in getting the City of Oxford Museum renovated and rebuilt. We received a very large grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and we are now into the phase of designing the new galleries in conjunction with the people that will be using them…. the people of the city. There will be a year of planning followed by a year or so of construction. It’s going to be a really important project for the city and the

“ The level of

charitable giving, the level of volunteering, the level of integration of objectives between business and the wider sectors of charity and voluntary groups has been remarkable in that ten year period Bob Price

outcome will be a brilliant new museum showcasing the history of the city – not the University!- for the people of Oxford, and for our many visitors. The educational facilities will be extensive and provide great opportunities for people of all ages to see and handle artefacts and archives. The galleries on the ground floor will be fully accessible and highly interactive. It’s going to be very exciting.”

In closing I ask Bob what his hopes are for the future of Oxford and how he intends to spend what spare time, if any, he has with the family. “Firstly, I hope we can tackle the city and county’s transport and related housing issues through the mechanisms that we have created through the Housing and Growth Deal. My second hope is that we are able to genuinely tackle the long-standing social problems of inequality and homelessness, and the associated problems of inequalities of health and educational achievement. There is a strong partnership shaping up between the county and ourselves and other providers to tackle those issues, so I don’t feel pessimistic about it. The problems are recognised and accepted, and we all want to do something about it, but we really do need to crack on to make Oxford a great city for everybody, not just for 70% who have good qualifications and good jobs. “I must add that B4 performs a really important role and Business in Oxford is the most important meeting now for all the businesses in the city and you have created something which has been a tremendous contribution to bring people together, so I hope I’ll continue to work with you on that for many years to come. “On a personal note, Jo and I have lots of places around Europe and the wider world that we would like to visit and, of course, there are still half of the Lake District’s Wainwright Peaks that remain to be conquered! So don’t worry, I will be keeping busy on all fronts!” Thank you Bob for your support for B4 and Business in Oxford and we look forward to thanking you formally at the closing session of BIO2018 on 23rd May at The King’s Centre. www.businessinoxford.com

THERE’S A NEW HIGH SHERIFF IN TOWN Richard Venables is a ‘doer’. Omnipresent on seemingly every committee in town (and county) he has an insatiable appetite for doing, whether that’s business, helping good causes, running, playing hockey or even, I’ve heard, performing some sort of music in a band! So when invited to take the reigns as High Sheriff, he saw it as an opportunity to combine his very many talents for the good of Oxfordshire. He’s even got one eye on a meeting with his hero. Richard Venables met B4’s Richard Rosser for an entertaining insight into what our new High Sheriff of Oxfordshire will be up to. Written by: Richard Rosser Photography by: Rob Scotcher

R Tell us more about how you became High Sheriff and what the role entails. V The High Sheriff is an unusual position. It’s the oldest Royal Appointment in the country which dates back over 1,000 years. The High Sheriff is nominated – it’s not a position you put yourself forward for. There’s a nomination committee which comprises the Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, The Bishop of Dorchester, The Lord Lieutenant, District Judges and a couple of ex-High Sheriffs. A list of people that they think are worthy of the position are discussed and my name came to the top. So I am very honoured and very proud. It’s an appointment for one year but I’ve actually known for a while because they appoint three or four years in advance. R So what are your duties for your year as High Sheriff? V It’s a Royal appointment so one of the foremost duties is to represent royalty in the county, but you also have to look after the organs of the constitution

which include the police, the judiciary and the prison service, so you champion these services. The High Sheriff also looks after faith groups, the armed forces and, more importantly, the volunteer sector of the community. So it’s a position of high responsibility. R So might you get a call at four in the morning to go and sort out a public order disturbance? V Well, although you ask in jest, in the past the High Sheriff was in charge of the local militia, so the High Sheriff would have raised the forces in the county and also raise taxes, but fortunately these powers have been devolved to others now so I’ll leave it to the Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police to sort out any riots in the county! R So I take it you won’t be herding sheep up Cornmarket either? V No! There are actually two Sheriffs in this county. There is the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire, which is the position of highest authority and there is the Sheriff of Oxford which is a civic position and it is the latter who gets to round up all the sheep and horses on Port Meadow.

R I would like to think you have taken a bit of stick for your outfit, so tell us a bit more about your official attire…. V The tights have caused great amusement Essentially it is 18th Century court wear. Starting at the bottom it’s little patent leather ballet type shoes with a silver buckle on them… R ….which you had anyway! V …yes, which I had anyway! (Rolls eyes). Tights, which I had anyway, lovely black velvet breeches, a black velvet frock coat with lots of steel cut buttons, a sword, a lace jabot and a wig bag that hangs off the back. The outfit is topped off with a bicorn hat and white cotton gloves that I carry rather than wear. I had great fun buying the tights in M&S. The sales assistant was very helpful and understanding. She asked what size my wife wanted and I started to explain they were for me. She said she’d heard it all before! The uniform is wonderful and addes to any occasion but can be a bit warm in summer. I am really proud to be High Sheriff and it’s going to be an amazing

those things that I thought, when I was asked to be High Sheriff, ‘oh no I’m going to have to dress up in tights’ Richard Venables - High Sheriff of Oxfordshire

B4 lead year and I’m really setting out to do as much as I possibly can. You know I like to fill my life to the brim and so this is just pushing that little bit further. R Well anyone who knows you thinks there must be at least four or five of you because you cover a lot of ground. Just going back to the High Sheriff’s role, outfit etc….. I know you’ve put a lot of work into your coat of arms so perhaps you could tell us a bit more about how that came about. V Part of the privilege of being High Sheriff is that you get to create your own coat of arms. I had to go to the Royal College of Arms to meet with a herald. We then discussed whether there was an existing coat of arms that I could carry. If you don’t have direct lineage to a coat of arms then you get to create your own coat of arms…for a small fee! So we created a coat of arms, which was wonderful, and on my website – www.highsheriffoxford.co.uk – you can see the finished version. The background is azure (blue) with the two waves which are on the Oxford coat of arms which represent the Thames and the Cherwell. There are then three white roundels, which actually represent hockey balls and inside of the roundels are three little birds (martlets) which represent my love of birdwatching! They are also a reference to King Edward the Confessor who had the same birds on his emblem, but he was also born in Islip (where Richard lives) so there’s a nice link there. So the coat of arms is a little bit of fun, it’s great to have and I can put on letterheads, my website, all sorts of things so it’s nice to have a little bit of tradition. R Tell us more about your swearing in ceremony.

V It took place on 10th April, so marking the start of my High Sheriff year. It’s a bit of pageantry, a bit of proper English heritage. Those present included a High Court Judge, the Lord Lieutenant, the outgoing High Sheriff, all of the District Judges, Magistrates and ex-High Sheriffs. It’s a small ceremony in which you have to swear allegiance to the Queen and you have to promise to behave yourself, amongst other things. Afterwards we had a little reception which was enjoyable, so it was an opportunity to invite the key people in positions of responsibility in Oxfordshire but also family and friends. R Three weeks in and I know you’ve already had the Plankathon at Westgate Shopping Centre as part of your Corporate Challenge, your dinner at D’Overbroeck’s and

B4 lead you ran the London Marathon last weekend. I am sure you have done a lot more and have lots planned for the year ahead. V I thought this was a great opportunity to raise money for some great causes. I’m a relatively youthful High Sheriff having just turned 51 – and so I thought it was only natural that I support the youth sector of Oxfordshire. My background is as a chartered surveyor but I get involved in a lot of initiatives around Oxfordshire including Oxford Youth Partnership and hockey coaching, so I thought I would champion Oxfordshire’s youth in my year as High Sheriff. The Corporate Challenge gives me the opportunity to raise some money. I looked towards my network for support and I have recruited 22 companies to be part of that and for a small fee they get to participate in a range of activities. These include a sporting challenge, a cultural challenge and some sports psychology talks. It’s all about wellness in the workplace and trying to encourage participation amongst all employees. As part of the sporting challenge we have already done the aforementioned Plankathon in Westgate with George Anderson. We had 60 people planking, accompanied by the Oxford Rock Choir. We have an ongoing Park Run challenge, we are getting together a team for the Town & Gown and we have a hockey festival and the Ox Olympics at Abingdon School which takes place in late July. The Cultural Challenge includes the High Sheriff’s Selfie competition, a Self Portrait competition at the Ashmolean later on in September. All of these initiatives will help raise money and we have so far raised in excess of £150,000, which is great going. The money raised will go to some local charities…. Access Sport Oxford which provides sporting opportunities to kids in deprived areas. I am also looking to do something with The Cultural and Education Partnership and I am looking to champion The Thomley Centre, an activity centre for autistic and disabled children in Worminghall. The key to all of this is that I am looking to match fund every corporate pound raised so that every pound raised is ultimately worth £2 or even £3.

that Oxford is a mixed place and I am really looking forward to not necessarily solving the problems but certainly highlighting them and bringing awareness to them. R We mustn’t forget that you have a day job in the midst of all of this as Director at VSL & Partners, so who’s manning the fort? V My colleagues are being very kind to me this year and they’ve recognised there is going to be a lot of time spent doing other things, but they are good enough to realise that I already do quite a lot of other things, be it for Experience Oxfordshire or Economic Development and the Local Enterprise Partnership. I have had to stand down from a few other commitments but a lot of the events are in the evening so I can certainly work around them without affecting work. But it’s a great opportunity and it really expands the horizons as to what is out there in Oxfordshire. It’s a great county with an amazing volunteer community.

Richard Venables - High Sheriff of Oxfordshire

R I understand you are the 14th person to have one of the Black Dogs and you join a celebrity list including Adam Ant, who I understand is a hero of yours? So was that part of the appeal, to dress like your hero? V So, yes I am a kid of the 80’s and Adam Ant was, and still is, a big part of my musical life. I saw him in concert just before Christmas and I have one personal ambition this year which is to meet Adam Ant. He is, as am I, an Ambassador and Patron for SANE so, fingers crossed, I will get a picture with the real Prince Charming! R Autograph book?

So that’s it in terms of the main sponsorship event, but I have already been involved in some incredible events in my first three weeks. I did a swearing in ceremony at St Aldates Police Station for some new police cadets, which was really good fun. Their families were there, I had to inspect a Guard of Honour and I’m looking forward to doing lots more work with the Police. There are some great PCSO’s in Oxford and the Superintendent, Joe Kidman, is passionate about what he does. We live in this amazing city with lots of great opportunities.

a great opportunity to raise money for some great causes. I’m a relatively youthful High Sheriff having just turned 51 – and so I thought it was only natural that I support the youth sector of Oxfordshire

I also wanted to highlight mental health awareness, an issue of great concern amongst the schools at the moment. We’re doing a project with a charity called SANE. The aforementioned fundraising dinner at D’Overbroeck’s School raised £10,000 and we are undertaking an awareness campaign with the Black Dog, a three foot high black resin Labrador which represents anxiety and depression and is SANE’s mascot. We are taking the dog to as many secondary schools and colleges as we can in Oxfordshire to raise awareness.

Did I also mention the 100km Race to the Stones Ultra run which I am doing in mid July to raise money for Huntingdon’s Disease Association?

Economically we do very well but there is this real polarity between the have’s and have not’s. There are massive issues with child drug exploitation, which is a big issue in and around Oxford. We have to admit

Wills and LPAs: Protecting your Business Successful businesses plan for the future - for the expected and unexpected. A crucial part of that planning is to protect your business, both during your lifetime and on your death. Written by: Alexandra Wright

Photography by: Jackie Cross

For a business owner, it is important to consider what would happen if you became incapable of running your business for any reason, whether this is due to mental or physical incapacity, or perhaps simply being unavailable while abroad.

A business Lasting Power of Attorney should be considered in conjunction with any arrangements that you have in place under your company’s articles of association, partnership or shareholder agreements, as these may contain provisions to deal with incapacity.

LPA A business Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to decide who would step into your shoes to take important decisions or deal with the day to day running of your business. It provides the opportunity for you to appoint someone that you trust, someone who is perhaps already familiar with your business and has the appropriate knowledge to take on the role. It is possible to appoint more than one attorney and to specify how those attorneys should act. Attorneys can be appointed to act jointly, in which case they all need to agree to the decision being taken, or jointly and severally, enabling either attorney to act. There may be some decisions that you would prefer your attorneys to take jointly, but you may be happy for them to be able to act independently for other matters. Without a business Lasting Power of Attorney, it may become necessary for the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy on your behalf, if you became mentally incapable. This process can be timeconsuming and costly. While this is in progress, your business could be “on hold” or even unable to function. Further, the Court may not appoint a Deputy that you would have chosen. Alexandra Wright

While a business Lasting “ Power of Attorney appoints someone to act on your behalf during your lifetime, it is also important to think about succession planning for your business. A Will is an integral part of this process. Hedges Law

We work closely with our Corporate and Employment Teams to ensure business owners’ interests are protected and their aims are met

WILLS The issues can be complex, and effective Will planning takes into account many factors. These include the structure and size of your business, your aims and objectives, and the needs of your family. Without a Will, the intestacy provisions will apply which may not produce the result that you intended. It is important to make provision for who you wish to pass your business interests to and who should deal with the administration of your estate. Your considerations may include: • Preserving the value of your business • The appointment of appropriate executors

Going from strength to strength: Knights 1759 adds new faces to its Oxford team Written by: Knights 1759

Knights 1759, the UK’s fastest-growing regional professional services business, has outlined its intentions to grow further in Oxford after expanding its already 100-strong team based at Midland House in Botley. Knights has had a really strong start to the year attracting some of the best talent in the UK, prizing individuals away from some of the country’s biggest cities as professionals look for a better work life balance. This is particularly true in Oxford where the London commute is an option, but Knights is showing exactly why the region is not only a great place to build your career as a professional, but it’s a fantastic place to do business..

Why Oxford is a great place to build your career It’s no secret that Oxford is a beautiful place to live, and with a better quality of life compared to the capital as professionals spend less time travelling to and from the office, it’s easy to understand why

you would choose to build a career here. Over the last ten years, the city has recorded one of the highest population growths of any UK city. But it’s not just the landscape and surroundings that’s attractive, Oxford is recognised as one of the fastest growing local economies in the UK, with

increase for any city outside of London1.

New faces added to the team The demand from businesses to have access to high-quality professional services within the regions has helped Knights 1759 to thrive and it is now one of the businesses in the region that is helping to attract more people to work and live here. Now a UK-top 100 business with 500 professionals operating from six regional offices across the UK, Knights 1759 is a £33.5 million turnover business after recording a 64% growth in revenue during 2016. Of course, this makes life much more enjoyable and rewarding. “My challenge for the year ahead is to raise the profile of Knights’ insolvency offering in the region and build the insolvency team by contributing to the training and development of more junior members of staff.”

Stewart Jordan works on behalf of many family businesses and helps individuals to succession plan along with advising many other private clients on reducing their tax liability and will bring a wealth of experience to the team. He added: “We live in a legislative environment which is increasingly fluid and at times uncertain – this makes it even more difficult for taxpayers to organise their personal affairs effectively. As advisers, our brief is to help clients come to terms with these challenges and deal with the particular issues they face by providing clear and practical advice.

Knights’ Oxford office has also seen the arrivals of Rebecca Harmer, employment solicitor, Laurel Knight, corporate solicitor, Stewart Jordan, private client senior associate and Ceri Roderick, partner in the Real Estate team.

Ceri and Monica outlines our intentions for further expansion this year. “Our growth strategy has always been to invest in and attract quality professionals who can continue to raise the profile of Knights in Oxford and drive forward our ambitious plans. It’s important that we also continue to immerse ourselves in the Oxford business community. “Stewart, Rebecca, Laurel, Ceri and Monica will all be actively out networking, helping individuals and businesses to prosper and ultimately contributing to a vast and growing economy in Oxford.” 1

VISTAGE Private advisory groups for MDs, executives and business owners. Find out how joining Dr Peter Collins and his Oxford-based working group of local CEOs, MDs and business owners will benefit you and your business.

Why Vistage? Because you want impartial advice. Because you need an honest answer. Join Vistage, get answers and take action.

It all starts with a group Vistage has been bringing together successful business leaders into private peer-advisory groups for over 60 years. Each group is hand-selected to help members help each other improve performance and outcomes of their businesses. In our groups, about a dozen executives (like you) meet once a month to solve problems, evaluate opportunities and work on an assortment of strategic and operational issues. Our 22,000 members around the world represent a wide range of industries and a variety of backgrounds.

An expert guides the meetings Put twelve or so high performing business executives in a room and the potential is enormous. My role as Vistage Chair of the Oxford group is to ensure that every bit of that diverse experience and wisdom is applied to the challenges at hand. I am an accomplished business leader with over 40 years working in and around scientific research. I am part facilitator, part coach and totally committed to the success of the group members. I help stimulate thinking, frame issues, guide discussions, limit tangents and ensure accountability.

It’s a structured, thorough and efficient approach to helping members think through the dynamics of a challenge. It forces you to push beyond your assumptions and get to the real issues. That’s critical to understanding and evaluating your opinions before making a decision and taking action.

Then it happens

The topics can be intense

Equally valuable, your group will follow your progress. In your next meeting, count on members asking if you advanced your plan.

In a Vistage group, no topic is off limits. If you are willing to talk candidly about the tough decisions you face, fellow members will rally around you, listen, ask tough questions and bring to bear every bit of experience, knowledge and insight they have to help you solve your problems and seize your opportunities. Whether the question is operational, financial, structural or even personal, your Vistage group is a confidential forum of experienced executives who rely on each other for wisdom, advice and counsel.

Ideas and answers start to flow With the wealth and diversity of experience Vistage members bring to their groups, chances are someone has grappled with the situations you are facing right now. And because members thrive on exchange, discussions get very intense, very quickly. As you work together, you and your group start to develop a range of options and solutions that can only come from a team of business professionals working toward one another’s success.

The work pays off. Though facilitated discussions with knowledgeable executives, you’ve turned “What to do?” into “What to do”. You’ve gained perspective and good advice and developed a definitive action plan – all in one day (along with a few sandwiches).

There’s another outcome you might not have expected. You helped other members immeasurably with your experience and insight. Members tell us that can be one of the most fulfilling parts of being part of Vistage.

Work on your business, not in it... Vistage offers a unique combination of resources for accelerating business performance: monthly meetings with non-competitive business peers, one-to-one executive coaching and mentoring sessions, expert speakers, interactive workshops, a rich online library of content, best practices, webinars and more.

Companies who join Vistage grow 2.2 x faster than non-member companies Source: Dun & Bradstreet 2017

The group digs deep Thinly reasoned conclusions have no place in a Vistage group. The hallmark of our groups is something we call Issue Processing.

In a time of increased competition, and with greater pressure on the bottom line – how do you drive increased customer value and profitability through your business? You have spent time and effort developing your business strategy – as a senior leader you have a clear idea of how to drive your business forward. But your people don’t seem to all be pushing in the same direction. The disconnect that can occur between business strategy and business delivery is well documented. A 2016 survey by Salesforce found that 86% of employees did not understand the strategy of the company they worked for. This means that your people may well be working hard – but is that effort well directed? Are they all driving to the same goal?

customer loyalty, employee satisfaction, loyalty and productivity. They identified that value in a business was created by satisfied and productive employees – who were motivated to deliver excellent customer service, which in turn developed customer loyalty and therefore profit. And there’s reams of other research that indicates that engaged people correlate directly with increased business profit.

In 1994 a team of leadership and engagement experts came up with a theory called the ‘Service-Profit Chain’, which is as relevant 25 years later as it was then. Through research and insight, they connected the dots between profitability,

So how do you make that connection between your ultimate business purpose and your people, driving value throughout your business? And how can you tell if your people are engaged with your business strategy?

B4 advice Engaged people want to come to work, they understand their jobs, and they know how their work contributes to the success of the organisation. It sounds so very simple, but a lot of people just don’t have the basics right. Engagement is not about ping pong tables, subsidised canteens and a slide in the office – it’s about having a clarity of purpose. A truly successful business requires an inspirational and authentic mission as well as liveable values that support and drive the employees and the business. Your company mission is your starting point– does it give your employees something meaningful to work towards, whilst at that same time appealing to your customers? This is why you do what you do – the reason to believe – and the basis of your strategy Once you’ve clearly outlined your mission, the ‘how’ should then manifest in the company values - these should encapsulate the way in which you want people to behave in achieving the mission. They should be unique to the organisation – genuine behaviours that people can recognise and understand – and not just meaningless soundbites. But it shouldn’t just stop there. Just giving people words is not going to help them live those values – there needs to be an investment of time and effort in making that mission and values real for people. You need to be clear and most importantly, consistent. It’s about the language you use internally, and the

www.b4-business.com

way people act, not just with each other, but also with customers. And this isn’t easy – the senior leadership team need to be completely bought in to the process, and they need to live and act those values. Your people and business need to enact those values through everything that you do – the language that you use with customers and each other, the way you draft your written communications and the way you operate; the way you do business.

A truly successful “business requires an inspirational and authentic mission as well as liveable values that support and drive the employees and the business

and unable to save themselves. Once they are given a ‘mission’ to achieve – saving themselves – they can all pull in the same direction and achieve success – freedom from the net! While this may be a simplistic description, the concept is the same. When people have a clear mission that they can get behind, values that they know how to articulate, and sense of contributing to the success of the organisation, then they will create better customer loyalty, and with that, drive value and profitability. Companies who get this right have a clear buzz about them – with employees who are happy, have a clear sense of purpose and who can deliver excellent customer service for their customers. For more information on how you can develop your mission and values to drive and grow your business email info@thinkinspireandcreate.com

Values are probably the hardest element to design, get right and embed. Done well, when the whole business is joined up, values can transform your organisation. It’s like a scene from the Pixar classic ‘Finding Nemo’ when Dory gets trapped in a fishing net with a school of tuna. Without a clear vision of what they need to achieve, the tuna are directionless

ARE YOU SWITCHED ON FOR GDPR? With less than 4 weeks to go until the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force, You HR Consultancy Limited are busy supporting their ‘retained’ clients with what they need to do in order to be compliant from an HR perspective. Written by: Jonna Mundy Photography by: Caroline Allington

Most of you reading this article will know that ‘G-Day’, as the You HR Team call it, is the 25th May 2018 but many organisations are still not recognising the impact of what the regulations mean for them as an Employer. According to a recent survey undertaken by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), a staggering 47% of the UK’s office workers do not know whether their employer is taking action to comply with GDPR… are you one of them? Any business that handles personal data needs to identify ‘WHAT’ data is collected; ‘HOW’ such data is used; ‘WHERE’ it is securely stored (and deleted) and ‘WHY’ it is actually needed, with the Regulation putting more of an emphasis on ‘WHO’ – i.e. the data subject - needs to be aware of the what, how, where and why! The Regulation distinguishes two main types of data being ‘personal data’ and ‘sensitive personal data’ (known as special categories of data under GDPR). If you hold or process either type of data, then GDPR will apply to your business. Let’s face it - that’s all of us! Although GDPR is being introduced by the European Union, the UK government has announced that they will enforce similar rules after Brexit and there will be significant consequences of non-compliance (a percentage of turnover or a penalty fine of up to £17.5M, whichever is the greater value.) So it’s inevitable that GDPR affects us all, and affects us all from an HR perspective too. Whether you employ staff or engage non-employed workers through other means, personal data will form part of this relationship (even records you hold from recruitment activity) and obtaining consent must be freely given by the individual - they must be 44

specifically informed in unambiguous terms. You also need to rethink how you approach data retention; how long it is needed and how your systems, processes and policies can be adapted to help control your data needs, train and inform staff, and drive regular cleansing of unneeded or excess data. There will be eight rights an individual will have under the Regulation that will need to be exercised through your organisation’s practices. This will inevitably mean change, to whatever lesser or greater extent for you, so without a doubt change is afoot for you and your organisational culture around the way your business behaves and complies with regards to personal/sensitive data. Personal data breaches will need to be reported to the supervisory authority, The Information Commissioners Office (ICO), within 72 hours, where feasible or ‘without undue delay,’ especially if the breach is likely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of individuals impacted by the breach - your systems and processes need to be able to handle this eventuality. With Proband recently reporting that 52% of staff access their work emails on unsecured personal devices, how confident are you of the data flows incoming and outgoing in your organisation, to mitigate any potential risk of a breach in personal data? With GDPR in mind, You HR Consultancy Limited are keen to practice what they preach, so two of their lead HR Advisers, Nichola Kirk and Kairan Knight, have taken on the mantle of Data Protection Officers for the business and are paving the way for best practice in compliance. The You HR Consultancy Team take great pride in their work and whilst we all know them for their refreshing and vibrant style in demonstrating how HR can be fun (don’t mention they do the pink and fluffy

stuff, they really don’t like it!), they lead by example in demonstrating how the difficult can be done! Nichola Kirk recently led a flawless full employment inspection of a client by HMRC and the response received was outstanding, not least from the Inspector himself. To quote from a letter from the ‘Man from the Ministry’ (HMRC!): “I refer to our meeting on 19 March 2018 and would like to express my sincere thanks to Nichola, for the assistance and courtesy you afforded me on the day…. I can confirm that I have no further enquiries in relation to this review and I will now take the necessary steps to finalise my records. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your co-operation during the course of this review.” This result was achieved through a relentless focus on ensuring the client was compliant in their practice of employment (employees and non-employed workers), the management of records & data and including compliance around aspects such as the dreaded IR35! When the You HR Consultancy team take on a new Retained client, their first step is to undertake a comprehensive HR Health Check, the results of which are reported back to the client with a suggested plan of prioritised action, demonstrating how issues, risks and areas of good practice can be addressed; not just in regards to legislative compliance from an HR Transactional perspective, but also regarding learning and development, any future proposed change, and not forgetting workplace wellbeing (last by no means least… but still not pink and fluffy!) The You HR Tree of People Growth identifies how we can all take a leaf from the tree and look at what might need focus in our organisations… after www.b4-business.com

How to keep your investors happy You may have just completed a fundraising round (in which case congratulations), or you may be pitching for investment (good luck). No matter where you are in this process you’ll need to think carefully about how to keep investors on side and content. Preparation is key, so this should really start before any investors come on board. Written by: Debbie Austin

It’s a delicate act of running your early stage business, staying the strategic course, maintaining control while delivering communication and results that incite confidence from your backers. They’ve placed real belief in you and your business, so you should nurture these connections to form long term relationships that will ultimately really benefit your business. The question is how given running an enterprise means a plethora of tasks that can result in communication channels slipping off your agenda. In our experience it’s all too easy for that to happen resulting in investor disengagement and frustration. We’ve put together these tips to help you manage these relationships, to drive shareholder fulfilment and ensure you remain in control of decision making..

1. What kind of stake in the business are you offering? For those just embarking on the journey of raising finance, the vital question is what type and class of shares are you willing to offer investors? Are you aware of these and how to select them based on your plans for the business? Ideally you’d identify from the outset in your business plan, the need for investment and when it will be required. Then make sure you work with your accountant to understand if tax breaks such as the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme are applicable. These could potentially be applied to help you in your pitch to would be investors. If you already have investors on board, you may need to revisit exactly what you offered them with your accountant or lawyer. You can make changes to share capital after incorporation if needed. However, this requires extensive planning and could prove expensive as it requires a redrafting of the legal documents that govern the ownership and rights in a limited company.

2. Understand your shareholders rights

3. Take control and manage the relationship Early on, be sure to manage expectations by providing a clear vision of where you are going and some form of timeframe for getting there. Doing this provides clarity and ensures everyone is on the same page as to the direction of travel for the enterprise. You need them to buy into what you see as the path to growth and possibly even an exit plan if you have one. Draw upon your accountant’s experience of having done this with other entrepreneurs. They can provide you with guidance on when and what should and possibly shouldn’t be shared with investors. Setting clear expectations from the start will likely save time, effort and frustration of having to revisit such matters later down the business path.

4. Communicate effectively The building blocks of a mutually advantageous relationship are formed through consistent communication. It may seem like common sense but unfortunately the obvious things all too often get lost in business. At its simplest this is a case of providing investors with regular management reports and keeping them informed as to financial performance and progress towards set goals. Again, work closely with your accountant to leverage their knowledge and experience of working with other clients, in helping you prepare reports that your investors will want and need. This combined with bi-monthly, or quarterly meetings should provide your backers with sufficient insight and a sense of involvement in proceedings. Doing all of this will help ensure you don’t lose control of the business you’ve worked so hard to build. Ultimately you live the day-to-day of your enterprise which means you know it’s inner workings best. Investors will often recognise that so while they will provide their opinion for you to consider, often many will want you to make the final decision as the owner manager.

If you don’t have a financial and/or legal background then you’ll need to take advice as to exactly what your shareholders legal rights entail. This is particularly vital when considering scenarios where you’ll need to allocate investment into the business or key decisions need to be undertaken as to the strategic direction of the enterprise. Generally shareholders rights refer to their specific privileges that are governed by the laws of the country your business operates out of. Depending on the articles of association, these can include the right to: • Share in the profitability, income and assets of the business • Influence and/or even control over management selection • Purchase newly issued shares before other new investors • Vote in general meetings

CASHFLOW CREATORS As anyone who has started their own business can attest, cash flow can be one of your biggest challenges and threats. Even successful businesses can experience periods where cash flow is extremely tight and they struggle to meet their monthly overheads. Keeping your finances under control and properly planned will not only ensure your business survives, but will promote growth. Written by: Sara Fielding Photography by: Studio 8

Seven out of ten small business owners cite cash flow problems as the biggest threat to their business. At best it will slow down or prevent growth, and it will almost certainly deflect the focus and attention of the business owner. At worst the business may run out of money and not survive. Running any business comes with its highs and lows, and as anyone who has experienced cash flow problems first-hand will verify, it is incredibly stressful and distracting. Cash is the lifeblood of any business, but without large cash reserves issues such as unexpected expenditures and late payments, can very quickly escalate and put your business in imminent danger. Late payers are a major cause of a great deal of distress to businesses of all sizes, and today the issue of late payment of invoices is more acute than ever. Research from the Asset Based Finance Association (ABFA) found that clients of small companies take on average 72 days to pay an invoice, and microbusiness owners have to wait six weeks or longer to be paid than larger firms. UK businesses are now routinely waiting nearly nine weeks for a single invoice to be paid, and with all the economic upheaval and uncertainty of Brexit, there’s a real risk that payment waiting times could become even longer as bigger businesses consolidate their cash flow position at the expense of their suppliers. The knock on effect down the supply chain is inevitable and it will be the smallest companies at the end of the chains that will be worst hit and at most risk. So what can be done about it? The good news is, there are a number of precautions and steps that you can put in place. The first step is to determine the level of risk on payments that you can manage as a business. If the answer is ‘no risk at all’ then payment in advance

www.b4-business.com

is an option. Upfront payments can be an ideal solution, especially for micro businesses, but a word of warning, it can restrict your market somewhat, especially in the B2B world where companies often expect to pay on account. Early payment discounts are another option and they are particularly attractive to businesses where profit is the driver, as it enables you to collect your cash faster. Conversely, extended terms may be a more favourable solution to companies where cash generation is key. Conducting the appropriate due diligence including finance and credit checks is imperative. Turning down potential new contracts is never easy and requires a steely resolve, but if a company’s credit history looks less than impressive, you could be saving yourself future headaches, heartaches and serious cash flow problems.

paid. However, depending on the nature of your business, it is often advisable and a good investment to contract a solicitor to draw up a bespoke set of T&Cs. Of course, late payments are just one of the causes of cash flow problems for businesses. At Cashflow Creators we work with businesses to help stem unwanted cash leaks and to create cash reserves. This includes looking at the many operational factors affecting cash flow and profitability. Whether you’re wrestling with plans for expansion, struggling with poor profitability or cash flow we have the skills and experience to help you stabilise the situation. We can also provide training and systems to help your business build cash reserves and become more profitable. For more cash flow tips, download our free top ten tips at www.cashflowcreators.co.uk

It could also serve you well to explore the credit history of key individuals within the company. Have they ever been associated with other organisations that have gone bankrupt? Creditworthiness should be monitored throughout the relationship with a customer company, as a change may signal a payment issue looming, and you are best prepared when you are forewarned. Assuming the customer’s credit history suggests that they can pay, the next step is to establish the terms and conditions under which you will be paid. It is a lot easier to set expectations at the beginning of a relationship, and I would always advise putting it in writing. A verbal agreement counts for nothing in court. Watertight terms and conditions establish the rights and responsibilities of both parties and can save a lot of time and money in the long run. You may find that a standard set of T&Cs covers everything you need to include, from payment and delivery terms to the consequences of not being

Bicester Vision celebrating 10 years

This year Bicester Vision is celebrating its 10th year in operation. A great achievement for a Partnership organisation, that set out ten years ago at a local business network meeting, to bring together Local Authorities and larger employers in Bicester, to shape the future of Bicester. In this time, we have had three Chairmen, one administrator and four Partnership Managers. The work of this committed team has always focussed on developing a thriving economy in Bicester. Written by: Grae Laws

Bicester is a global brand With an internationally recognised name and high profile local employers, the town benefits from a committed band of traders and businesses that wish to keep Bicester in the map. Because of the residential growth and national challenges, change is inevitable for our town. It is down to those living and working in and around Bicester to work together to make the town an even more attractive place to visit. It is about getting the balance right between independent shops and national chains. Businesses in and around the town are contributing an incredible amount to the local economy but there is scope to do more, which is where Bicester Vision will play a role, collaborating with other groups, such as the local Chamber of Commerce, Bicester Town Council and the Town Centre Traders, helping to attract new businesses, new jobs and investment to the area.

some of which is already in train with Graven Hill, Kingsmere, the Eco Town etc which will undoubtedly result in additional footfall in the town, although with the level of out-commuting running at around 63% currently, much more needs to be done to encourage people to ‘stay local’.

The role of Bicester Vision is to ensure that there is a solid mix or employment opportunities in not only retail, but other important sectors including biotech, sciences, advanced manufacturing and Software and communications... Grae Laws - Bicester Vision

It is for this reason that Bicester Vision committed resources to both MIPIM 2017, an inward investment property show, and also Business In Oxford 2018, a business event focussed on showcasing the very best the of Oxfordshire business community.

Employment a key area on which to focus The next 10 years will continue to see development,

52

The role of Bicester Vision is to ensure that there is a solid mix or employment opportunities in not only retail, but other important sectors including biotech and the sciences, advanced manufacturing, Software and communications and 3rd sector opportunities. There is a need to tap into skills investment to ensure that those coming out of education can stay and work in the area. Which is why Bicester Vision work

closely with all of the schools in Bicester, encouraging their students to develop workplace projects with local employers that offers shared gains for all.

Growth Deal could be mean a great deal for Bicester The scale of growth being seen around Bicester in all areas, housing, jobs, etc, brings with it challenges, not least to the area’s road network. It is about how to create the infrastructure needed in a sustainable way. Bicester has been identified as a priority place within the region and the Oxfordshire Growth Deal announced in November of a £215m down payment for the county is a start towards the funding needed for infrastructure but does not offer the full solution. One element of the Growth Deal has been funding towards an increased provision of affordable housing in Cherwell District (Government’s ambition is to add another 1 million houses along the NIC corridor in the period up to 2050) but without further investment in utilities it will not be possible to grow Oxfordshire much beyond the current planned levels. The challenge thrown down to the business community is to outline what is needed to deliver desired growth and direct the Local Enterprise Partnerships and Local Authorities on how to use funding to best advantage to achieve Government’s ambitions.

Grae Laws - Bicester Vision

Our forward plan Bicester Vision are ready for the challenges that lay ahead. We are keen to hear from business leaders that share our desire for getting the best deal for Bicester and those businesses that operate here. Our forward plan this year includes the following:

Oxford to Cambridge corridor a vital component for growth in Bicester Within the national policy framework, Local Enterprise Partnerships are being charged with developing Local Industrial Strategies; the question is, what should the Local Industrial Strategy look like for Bicester, from the perspective of the town, the county and from the perspective of the Oxford to Cambridge growth corridor? The Oxford to Cambridge corridor has been identified as the most productive area of the country with specialisms including Life Sciences, Space & Satellite, Advanced Engineering/ High Performance Technology, Creative & Digital, and with emerging sectors around Electronics & Autonomous Vehicles, and Quantum Engineering. Bicester has an opportunity to place itself at the heart of this growth; but clarity is needed on what the Bicester community wishes to see. Work on the corridor is already progressing with discussions on road and rail infrastructure, and Bicester has incredible location advantages and favourable land prices compared to other areas; people can afford to live in and around Bicester.

Expressway – yes, please Oxfordshire County Council as the Highways Authority is pressing for public engagement in the

www.b4-business.com

first stage of decision-making on the Expressway, as is the Oxfordshire Growth Board. Currently, Highways England is due to make a decision (without public consultation) on the preferred broad corridor route by July 2018. Following that there will be public consultation on the actual detail of the route through the chosen corridor. The current expectation is that the Expressway will be built and ready to use by 2030. Should the chosen corridor be the northern route, this would run to the south east of Graven Hill and would have considerable implications for Bicester. If this route is chosen, work will need to be done to upgrade the A34 and make improvements to J9 on the M40. To be clear, there will be profound implications for the growth of Bicester and it will inevitably bring more pressure to further develop and expand Bicester. That said, there are also opportunities to be gained and Bicester needs to be looking at the employment land required to meet future needs (which will not be just about warehousing).

Blenheim on the hunt for Entrepreneurs Blenheim is launching a new competition to encourage local entrepreneurs and start-up businesses by offering them a contract and expert mentoring skills. Interviewer: Stephanie Duncan Photography: Studio8

Working in partnership with the FAB Accelerator team, the Oxfordshire Estate has put together its own programme to support locally-based firms. The opportunity is open to any business which is less than two years old or has fewer than five employees, is based within 20 miles of Blenheim, and can provide something which could be stocked in their shops or cafes. Applications will need to be submitted by the end of April when successful candidates will be selected to go forward and pitch their ideas to Blenheim’s senior management team over the summer. After undergoing presentation training, they will take part in a final pitch at the start of July when the winning applicant will be selected and awarded with a contract to supply their products to the Estate’s retail or catering outlets. In addition to the contract, the winner will also receive ongoing tips and advice from members of the Blenheim management team. “Blenheim has been the lifeblood of the local economy since the time of the First Duke,” said CEO, Dominic Hare.

www.b4-business.com

“As part of our stated goal to triple our economic contribution to the local community within 10 years, we’re committed to utilising Blenheim as a platform to provide start-up businesses with support and a busy marketplace to showcase their products. “Initially we are inviting people who can supply us with products for either our retail or catering outlets, however the plan is to expand this to other business sectors in the future.

“ Blenheim has been

the lifeblood of the local economy since the time of the First Duke Blenheim CEO, Dominic Hare

“By using the expertise and experience of the FAB Accelerator team, we’ve set up our own programme to identify, support and develop exciting new businesses in the area. “The failure rate of startups within their first couple of years is extremely high. We believe this scheme will

not only provide great new products for Blenheim but also help to ensure more businesses survive and thrive,” he added. The brainchild of Fabulous Bakin’ Boys’ founder Gary Frank, FAB was Oxford’s first accelerator programme for ambitious entrepreneurs and startups.

news Dynamic tech firms flock to new city centre ‘hub’

A major project to create an Oxford city centre hub for thriving, innovative companies has been completed. The buildings at 58-60 St Aldate’s have undergone a complete ‘defurbishment’ by owners Vantage Asset Management, ensuring the character and original features have been retained, with modern facilities sympathetically installed.

The three buildings totalling 32,796 sq ft were stripped back before being fitted with feature ceilings, LED lighting, new air conditioning and state of the art breakout areas to create modern Class A office space.

“These offices provide dynamic, flexible areas that can meet the often rapidly changing needs of occupiers without the constraint of long lease agreements.”

Lettings were obtained on available space prior to the completion of the defurbishment and new lease agreements with existing occupiers secured.

As well as creating engaging workspaces, occupiers can also benefit from easy access to Oxford’s thriving shops and cafes as well as the train station with easy links to London and the North.

Tom Barton, director at VSL & Partners, says: “This development has provided a remarkable space in the heart of Oxford for young, innovative tech companies wanting state-of-the-art facilities that reflect their profiles.

Suites are available to let on flexible terms in the building ranging from 1,300-2,642 sq ft. For further information or to speak to one of the VSL experts, please call 01865 848488 or visit: www.vslandp.com

WALLERS

ESTATE AGENTS Last summer, we ran a feature on Wallers Estate agents. A rebrand, new staff and having just moved into their new branch on Banbury Road in Summertown, Wallers were beginning on a really exciting chapter in their development. A lot of big steps have been made in the 9 months since then and Wallers as a business, as a brand and as a major player in the Oxford property market hasn’t looked like even thinking of slowing down. Written by: Barry O’Brien of Fluent Marketing Photography by: Stefanie Calleja-Gera of SCG photography and David Fleming

Before we look at the next steps, let’s first look at what got them this far… Rowan Waller began his Oxfordshire property career working for a corporate estate agent. Things were going well and despite working his way up through the ranks, the impersonal approach adopted by many such agents never sat right. “Everything was geared towards what suited the agent, not what was right for the homeowner, buyer, landlord or tenant”, explained Rowan. “I had to try to change the way things were done”. In September 2014, Rowan set upon a journey to create a family run Estate Agency service that was truly local, personal, and dedicated to putting its clients’ interests first. Starting out in his spare room and shortly a serviced office in Summertown, Wallers’ reputation for customer service grew rapidly. It was this reputation that led to an impressive portfolio of properties on the market in a short period of time which in turn resulted in Wallers being noticed at a national level. In 2016 they were named as the Best Estate Agents in Oxfordshire at the ESTAS: National Estate Agent Awards and the Best in the Southern Region of the UK at the British Property Awards. Rowan himself was acknowledged as one of the Top 5 Property Professionals in the country that year. 2017 saw more acknowledgements. Firstly, again at the ESTAS before being shortlisted in the maximum of 4 categories at the Negotiator Awards last November. Wallers Estate Agents has now gained the ‘Exceptional’ class rating in the Best Estate Agent Guide for 2018, classed within the top 5% of UK agents at the most recent EA Masters Awards. Wallers’ first branch opened in June last year and if you’ve never visited, then you should. It’s not an Estate Agent as you would probably expect. The friendly team are usually sitting on the sofas working on their iPads or chatting with clients while enjoying a latte at the coffee bar. It’s far more of a relaxed and comfortable place to be than the usual Estate Agent office where everyone talks to you from behind their desk and over their computer screens. www.b4-business.com

The higher profile that came from the high street presence has grown the business even more. The Lettings side of the business in September with the fresh approach of No Tenancy Fees. “We just never thought they were fair”, said Rowan of this ethos. “Agencies make money by exploiting their tenants. Admin, contract, reference and renewal fees are unnecessary. We want to make sure that we match the right tenants with the right landlords. If we do that, we make the long-term relationships that are best for everyone”. This is a typical approach for this refreshing local business.

So what’s next? “We’ve just teamed up with Oxford United to become an Official Club Partner. If you’ve been to a match recently, or seen one of Oxford United’s games on TV, you won’t have been able to miss our new ad at the Kassam. I think it’s one of the biggest there and has a fairly simple, yet honest statement about our business – Oxford, and proud” This month also sees the opening of Wallers’ second branch. This time on Rose Hill on the east side of Oxford. “We’ve always done a lot of good business in OX4 and it’s time that we open a branch to service our clients in the area directly rather than managing it from OX2. We’re very local centric in most things that we do so our aim is to have a local presence all over the city”, says Rowan with his typical smile. Does that mean that there are more branches in the pipeline? “Ha! You’ll have to watch this space…”

Mark Charter

Partner and Head of Carter Jonas Oxford Towards the end of last year we highlighted the mixed nature of Oxfordshire’s housing market; overall annual house price growth contrasted with a decline in transaction volumes. Whilst this trend has continued into the first few months of this year, not helped perhaps by an unseasonably cold March, the onset of spring has already started to provide an added momentum that the region’s market needs. Written by: Mark Charter Photography by: Aurelian Langlais (portraits)

Warmer weather aside, a number of key elements can help to attract interest from buyers. Location is obviously key, and Oxfordshire is fortunate in that it benefits from outstanding schools, great retail destinations, and established transport links. In October 2017, the 800,000 sq ft Westgate Oxford opened its doors, a renovation which, whilst a long time in the making, provides a great new retail and leisure destination in its own right. One of the big plays for the scheme is the introduction of a large entertainment facility led by a Curzon cinema. This much-needed, post-work leisure offering is a real magnet for the city and helps support Oxford’s ranking as the second in the Fastest Growing City league table.

60

Another appealing development is the recent advancement of various infrastructure projects in the region, which help to endorse the Oxford-Cambridge arc initiative, with the aim of channelling the success of both cities beyond their typical boundaries. The Oxford to Cambridge rail route – the historic Varsity Line - which will be completed by the mid-2020s will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the corridor itself as well as a ripple effect on its surrounding areas. Perhaps one of the more fashionable factors that has had a noticeable influence on Oxfordshire’s market over the last 18 months is the opening Soho Farmhouse on the Great Tew Estate. Even more exclusive than the Waitrose effect, when Nick

Jones of the Soho House Group announced plans to open an outpost of his feted private members club in the region, agents agreed that this would mark a step change in the fortunes of the Oxfordshire residential market. It has certainly increased the desirability of an area that is a commutable distance from central London – just 90 minutes - and within easy reach of Oxford Parkway station. But it’s not just commuters who are enjoying a new rural way of life; the downfrom-London cohort also now regularly pack up the car on a Friday evening, sequester themselves in the Oxfordshire greenery for the weekend, before returning to reality on either a Sunday evening or early on a Monday morning.

6pm, they are often awash with a sea of laptops. All manners of industry can be accommodated; from one-person start-ups to executive business meetings, which mix within informal, comfortable spaces. The added benefits being first-class service, endless networking possibilities, and no distractions of home.

Whilst many had heard of Chipping Norton and the Daylesford triangle, Soho Farmhouse has thrust Great Tew and its surrounding villages into the spotlight and served to shift the perimeters of the search focus. A similar effect was seen when Babington House (another Soho House hotel) opened its doors in Somerset in the late nineties. As well as providing an ideal location for celebrity weddings, the venue has served to increase the popularity of its adjacent villages, which now regularly appear in the property sections of national newspapers – not to mention the pages of Hello! magazine.

The fact that their proximity to Soho Farmhouse will feature high up on the marketing material is no coincidence. In the current climate, perhaps more than ever before, location is everything and, thanks to some quite magical elements, Oxfordshire remains one of the most desirable living destinations in the UK – long may it continue.

The appeal of these destinations reaches well beyond star-studded guest lists and even the five star facilities that they offer - for an annual fee. They also provide and ideal environment in which to work. Indeed, if you visit any private members club before

www.b4-business.com

Over the next few months, Carter Jonas’ residential team is set to launch a number of properties in the area onto the market and we expect to see strong demand from local buyers looking to benefit from the growing popularity of the area and its amenities, as well as those looking for a weekend bolthole.

Warmer weather aside, “a number of key elements can help to attract interest from buyers. Location is obviously key, and Oxfordshire is fortunate in that it benefits from outstanding schools, great retail destinations, and established transport links.

Any outsourced IT “supplier ought to be

working with one eye on your future and guiding you strategically on what the business should be doing with regards to securing its assets in preparation for upcoming regulations such as the GDPR. Gareth Johnson - CIS

PLACING YOUR TRUST IN THE HANDS OF A STRANGER Leaning towards outsourcing your IT but looking to assess the benefits from extended support? Written by: Gareth Johnson

There are many reasons that bring businesses around to considering the idea of outsourcing their IT to an external provider. For some, it could be that there is a lack of in-house expertise and that hiring an in-house IT manager may be a luxury they just cannot afford. For others it may be the need to focus on running their core business without the unwanted distraction of attempting to manage a highly technical complicated space fraught with compliance dangers. Whatever the reason, the idea of outsourcing IT support signifies the passing of one of any business’s most precious of assets to someone outside of their circle of trust. Yet for most small to medium sized businesses it is something they must often look at doing based on the cost implications of running their own internal IT department and running on what would almost certainly be a break/fix scenario that could result in prolonged periods of downtime. But when you reach this point there are obviously various aspects you ought to consider. Does the organisation you are looking at have a track record in IT security and compliance? Do they have extensive references in support of the case for placing your trust in them? You might, for instance, want to take a look at how long they have they been in business and what their accreditations say about the work they carry out for existing clients? Take a look at the

www.b4-business.com

key technology partners they work with, as this will give you an idea of the level of expertise. Do they hold accreditations from the likes of Microsoft, HP, Sophos, Symantec, Veeam or VMware? Those will give you an indication as to the depth of expertise you are dealing with. Another thing to consider is the range of clients. Does your prospective new IT solutions provider or consultancy look provide the same service and focus for businesses locally as it does for other national and internationally renowned brands that it serves? Serving a range of different sized brands with varied needs – such as IT strategy, storage, cloud migration, virtualisation and managed support – means that your supplier will be forced to prepare for and insure against every eventuality. Any outsourced IT supplier ought to be working with one eye on your future and guiding you strategically on what the business should be doing with regards to securing its assets in preparation for upcoming regulations such as the GDPR. Are they encrypting data securely to latest standards such as ISO 27001? And should you, for instance, take a mixture of onpremise and cloud to give yourself a hybrid solution or do you need to take advantage of a private cloud solution wrapped up in 24/7 support in a UK data centre?

Whatever your concern, CIS has been answering questions like these and more for our clients over the past 25 years. Indeed, an increase in such demands has meant that we have also recently rolled out extended office support from 8am until midnight. This brings two new benefits to businesses we serve. Not only does it give you the additional comfort that comes with the extra cover provided, but it also allows for increased levels of uptime as updates and security patches can be taken care of once everyone else has left the building. WORK CLEVER

OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY IS A SMART CHOICE FOR BUSINESS Written by: Joseph Kenneway

The challenge in uncertain economic times is for businesses to work smarter than their rivals if they are to survive and thrive. A workforce with the right skills, product and process innovation, better ways of working, and the power to harness and develop the talent of employees, has the building blocks for an efficient and profitable enterprise. But finding that talent, creating an innovation culture, investing in new processes and equipment, and providing in-house training programmes, can make significant demands on a company in terms of both finance and time. Businesses have come to Oxford Brookes University for help in meeting many of these challenges. We’re in the business of people development, from keen and enthusiastic undergraduates, through dedicated and respected researchers, to enhancing the skill sets of today’s managers and tomorrow’s leaders in business. The team in our Research and Business Development Office (RBDO) is there to help connect you with the expertise and student talent we have to offer, to partner with you in research and consultancy projects, and advise you on attracting funding where it is available. David Hartley is the Commercial and Knowledge Exchange Director at Oxford Brookes. TALENT POOL Oxford Brookes undergraduate and postgraduate students come from across the globe, drawn by the University’s reputation for teaching and research excellence. Over 93% of students are in work and/or further study within 6 months of graduation. However, employers can tap into that talent before graduation and in a variety of ways. Student placements offer employers the opportunity to take a student into their workforce, benefiting from their enthusiastic approach and knowledget. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships offer a business a way of recruiting graduate expertise www.b4-business.com

into their team to lead on an innovation project, typically over a two year period and with Government funding available to cover around two thirds of the cost. Higher and degree apprenticeships allow businesses to upskill current employees as well as offer an attractive training option to new recruits. They typically attend University part time – one day a week, for blocks of time – or complete distance learning.

RESEARCH FIELD The University’s research programmes cover a wide variety of industries and sectors, from healthcare through to artificial intelligence, biotechnology, engineering, built environment, and business and management. The RBDO team is here to connect you with the right academic and research group to analyse your challenges and propose suitable collaborations with the prospect of improving your business efficiency and adding to your profitability. Practical assistance is also available through collaborative projects or as a service provision to meet your requirements. The University has a wide range of specialist equipment that would be a significant investment to purchase, but which can be hired for direct use, or employed in analysis and product testing on your behalf. Our experienced researchers and technicians can also help you develop protocols and procedures to get the most from your work.

CAREER LADDER Oxford Brookes has a variety of courses and training options to support Continuing Professional Development. These include short courses in specialist subject areas and skills such as computing, teaching, and leadership and management, and courses recognised by professional bodies in areas such as architecture, healthcare, and business. FLY HIGH WITH BUZZ DIGITAL MARKETING It’s safe to say that digital marketing is still a grey area in the world of business. Lots of organisations are aware of it, but creating an effective digital marketing strategy, including catchy content and enthusing visual aids can be time consuming and extremely expensive. Written by: Brianna Elsley

This is why I founded Buzz Digital Marketing. I spotted a niche gap in the market for offering a first-class digital marketing service which is completely tailored to the needs of the client. No rigid packages, no set pricing structures - just simply a flexible, affordable and quality solution for your business. In my opinion, the demand for a strong digital marketing presence is only going to increase further (we’ll get to that later!), so now is the perfect time to start the process of developing digital marketing in your organisation. I started Buzz Digital Marketing as a part-time business, alongside full-time work, to earn some extra money whilst saving for my first home. Buzz Digital Marketing is now my full-time business, and it’s fair to say I’m loving it! I am extremely passionate about what I do and get a real buzz (apologies for the pun!) from helping businesses fulfil their potential through the means of digital marketing. So why is digital marketing so important? Here are just some of the benefits that digital marketing brings to businesses: • Increasing website traffic – digital marketing is an excellent method of driving people to your website • Distance? What’s that? – digital marketing eradicates the barrier of not being able to reach people far away. Gone are the days of having customers within a few-mile radius, with digital marketing you can honestly reach anyone, anywhere! • Increasing sales and awareness – this is pretty www.b4-business.com

self-explanatory, but digital marketing is an excellent tool to do what we all want; increase sales! • It’s an investment, not an overhead! – some people see marketing as a decrease on their bottom line, and this is the case if it’s not bringing in results. However, with the right strategy, profile and content, your business will see a return on investment

A study by the “ Office for National

Statistics in 2017 discovered that nearly 80% of people in the UK buy goods or services online, an increase from 50% in 2008.

their current digital marketing strategy. I am a big advocate of a ‘personal’ service, where I take the time to understand your business, so I can market it in the most effective way. And finally, I have an interesting stat to share, building on my introductory paragraph. A study by the Office for National Statistics in 2017 discovered that nearly 80% of people in the UK buy goods or services online, an increase from 50% in 2008. Digital marketing is on the rise and you need to be part of this journey. There’s a lot of exciting things happening at Buzz Digital Marketing in the coming months, so keep your eyes peeled! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to keep up to date with the latest digital news. If what you’ve read has got you thinking, please get in touch via email: brianna@ buzzdigitalmarketing.co.uk.

Brianna Elsley - Buzz Digital Marketing

• It’s personal – if your business has a clear target audience, digital marketing can be a hugely effective way of connecting with those people • Bringing it all together – if you already have a marketing plan/strategy, digital marketing seamlessly slots into that to further enhance it, creating more excitement around your business I’m looking to work with businesses who either have no digital marketing presence or want to improve

A HEALTHIER WORKPLACE Better health and wellbeing is a way of life – and it needs to continue at work.

Ensure your workspace is a healthy zone. Work to your full potential and enjoy your life outside of it.

Prevent Back Tension

Avoid Wrist Pressure

In a great position. For work. For life.

Healthy working. Hands down.

Have you ever calculated how many hours a day you are sat down? It’s probably between 7 to 10 hours – or even more. Especially if you’re a desk worker.

We love our devices. At work. In the home. And on the go. Typing. Tapping. Scrolling. Swiping. Our keyboards and screens are in constant use. And our hands and wrists are working non-stop. You need to care for them.

Good posture is essential for keeping backache at bay. A great way to do that is to use a back and foot support whilst seated. You’ll then be in the best position to feel comfortable and work better.

Relieve Neck Strain

Looking good. Feeling great.

We know that screen work can be a strain. But a few small adjustments can make a world of difference. For correct posture and comfortable viewing, ensure your eyes are in line with the top of your screen. Monitor supports and monitor arms get you aligned.

Five Ways Blockchain Can Unblock Your Supply Chain Futurist Don Tapscott said blockchain will allow companies to revolutionise their business models, but how can the technology unblock your supply chain? Written by: Claire Walters, Chief Commercial Officer, Unipart Logistics

The conversation around data sharing can be a particular challenge for enterprises because of issues such as cost, information security, implementation, data standards, and relationship management. And yet, for urban logistics strategies and other complex supply chains to be realistic and effective, it is crucial that data sharing objectives are defined and agreed by all parties. Unlike other platforms, blockchain is not susceptible to data alteration and can record transactions safely between participants. That makes it especially relevant to today’s increasingly globalised supply chains with multiple stakeholders across varying industries. Here are five ways in which blockchain could potentially enable smarter and more effective data sharing.

Reduce costs by consolidating transaction protocols If connectivity was a highway and data was the traffic moving around it, transaction protocols would be the rules of the road. Blockchain consolidates these, making information sharing faster and simpler. Unsurprisingly, more efficient information-sharing processes translate into more cost-effective ones. Integrating blockchain technology into the supply chain could also assist with reducing the number of complex layers involved, for example the need for middle management. Transactions could be freed by consolidating assets and operations on streamlined staff levels, further lowering supply chain costs.

Use blockchain to improve data transparency and eradicate fraud Increased supply chain connectivity and data sharing poses heightened risks to information security. One of the key benefits of blockchain is the immutability of its data. Digital transactions cannot be forged or altered, www.b4-business.com

effectively eliminating the risk of fraud from the supply chain. By registering the identity and transfer of all goods as transactions, blockchain could also ensure transparency in the supply chain. This means any relevant information required in managing the supply chain could be recorded and shared throughout the stable network, enabling real-time collaboration and strengthening supplier relationships.

synchronised, there is no need for a centralised administrator or data storage solution, driving data integrity and higher customer and supplier integration.

Increase visibility and responsiveness to earn stakeholder trust

Simplified information sharing could boost productivity

It’s no secret that seamless information sharing encourages positive business relationships between parties. As data-sharing requirements continue to increase, maintaining visibility from multiple stakeholders is key to efficiency and responsiveness in the supply chain.

When information sharing is simpler, companies can operate more productively. This is particularly applicable to the distribution and transportation industries, where the introduction of blockchain technology could effectively increase supply chain visibility and agility.

As a permission-based network, blockchain could alleviate common concerns about privacy, granting customisable levels of access. In addition to this, confidential data could be encrypted so that it is only visible to approved members.

Tracking devices implemented through blockchain could be attached to products, cases and pallets, monitoring an item’s every move from warehouse through to delivery. Identity chips, sensors or barcodes could then communicate with the network, providing real time updates to supply chain operators and relevant stakeholders in the blockchain network.

While it is still early days in regard to adoption, blockchain technology presents exciting opportunities for supply chain directors and heads of logistics looking for simpler, more transparent and secure data sharing, alleviating many of the concerns currently limiting urban logistics strategies and greater supply chain connectivity.

Define common data standards using distributed ledger technology

For more information on how emerging technologies can benefit your supply chain activities, contact Claire Walters (claire.walters@unipart.com).

Poor quality data can severely limit an organisation’s ability to generate accurate supply chain insights, making a lack of data standards a clear obstacle to information sharing. Whether it is generated internally or received from a third-party, data must be reliable, timely, accurate, and credible if meaningful logistics insights are to be drawn from it. Blockchain’s distributed ledger technology could well address this; since data is securely shared and

REVIEW OF HEADINGTON CARRIERS By Colin & Sue Rosser When you have lived somewhere for 37 years, moving is not something you can enter into without a good deal of planning, thought and careful consideration as to which removal company you use. On top of this, moving from over 7,000 square feet of accommodation to somewhere a little over 2,000 square feet certainly brings to mind ’fitting a quart into a pint pot’! Given that we were initially moving into rented accommodation whilst obtaining planning permission for our new home gave us some flexibility, there were still three different destinations for our furniture. The move was basically carried out over two weeks from the 23rd November to the 6th December.

We first met Daniel Barrett, the manager of Headington Carriers, on the 27th September and immediately felt we were in safe hands. My worries about moving the snooker table (with 6 x 70 kg slates) from our basement, moving cumbersome gym equipment, large Bay trees planted in huge terracotta pots and a great deal of office equipment, were all put to rest. We accepted their quote which I thought was very reasonable and decided to look no further. This company has a depth of resources, with men and vehicles in good supply. No wonder they are first choice for Thames Valley Police and the local NHS. As arranged, they dismantled the snooker table and packed all that was needed prior to the 24th and when the actual move happened on that day, everything went to plan. Of course I should have realised ‘that was the easy bit’! We cherry picked the furniture we needed for the rental and my wife soon made it look just like home! Getting everything out of a very large house is some task. On that final day the 6th December there were 4 large Headington Carrier Vehicles in our drive and it was bedlam. Two full skips were to be collected and there was a team of cleaners making sure everything was as neat and tidy as possible. It didn’t help that it was a filthy day and didn’t stop raining. The Bay tree pots had absorbed a lot of rain and now weighed something like 100 kg each. I know moving is not something I have done for a while but we chose the right company and I have no hesitation in recommending Headington Carriers, lead by Peter Barrett, Managing Director and his son Daniel.

INTRODUCING THE AGILE WORKPLACE… Whilst latest trends and industry buzzwords come and go, it looks as though agile working is one trend that’s definitely here to stay. Written by: Debbie Fogg Photography by: Andrew Wilkinson Photography

So what exactly does the agile workplace look like? Agile (or activity based) working is a fresh, inspirational approach to workplace design. With hand-held devices, mobile and cloud technology, employees no longer need to be at a fixed workstation throughout their working day. This, coupled with the blurring lines between work, home and social life has resulted in office design becoming much more creative. The agile workplace is made up of imaginative, flexible (and often quirky) workspaces. These include trendy cafés, pool tables and chill-out zones, which encourage social interaction, creativity and team collaboration. Soft seating, funky breakout areas and “touch-down” points (for ad-hoc tasks and quick, informal meetings) create a more relaxed, home-from-home working environment. Whilst fixed workstations still feature in the agile workplace for certain tasks, less space is taken up by them. This way of working empowers employees by www.b4-business.com

giving them the freedom to work in a choice of environments, based on the task in hand and in a way that suits them. It has been shown to improve employee satisfaction and well-being and increase productivity.

B4 VALUES - A BETTER WAY TO DO BUSINESS Business that’s good for Oxfordshire is good for your business Written by: Grant Hayward

Thumb through any recent issue of B4 Magazine and you will see an increasing number of stories about local businesses embedding purpose and an ethical approach into the heart of what they do. Perhaps it is no surprise then that B4’s Richard Rosser was tremendously welcoming of my offer to work with him to help develop ‘B4 Values’; a clear declaration of what B4 stands for and the types of businesses B4 seeks to attract and promote. You will be hearing more about B4 Values over the coming months and it will be integral to ‘Oxford & Oxfordshire, World Class & Connected’, being launched at BIO2018, where I am also very much look forward to presenting on the topic. So, as a taster, I would like to share some insights with you, exploring some of the myths, misunderstanding and, most importantly, the significant opportunities open to businesses in a newly developing local, national and global landscape – and why business for good is good for your business.

The problem I have with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

opportunities for businesses and here is just a flavour of each of them.

Environment

The term CSR refers to the ways in which a business operates in relation to society and the environment and, if the truth be known, I have a few issues with it……

The progress made with improved recycling over the past few years is admirable and is now a given to most of us. But with some creative thinking, businesses have the opportunity to make significant cost savings and enhance credibility through reduced energy usage and emission from more efficient travel arrangements and waste reduction.

The first is the use of the word ‘corporate’, which I would suggest most of the, circa 30,000, businesses in Oxfordshire do not relate to. I come across so many brilliant businesses of all sizes doing some great things. The second is related to the first issue. In my experience, CSR is misunderstood and underestimated in the value it has to businesses, especially SME’s. Many consider it to either be an obligation with connotations of regulation and compliance, or perhaps simply limited to supporting local charities or reducing the carbon footprint of the company. As commendable as these are, there are so many more opportunities that businesses could be opening up to improve their organisations. But however you refer to it, I firmly believe the underlying principles are great for business.

Clarification and simplicity If a company really wants to take this topic seriously, there are European Standards that can be attained: ISO 26000 - Social responsibility and ISO 14000 family - Environmental management. But I prefer to take a much simpler approach and focus on four commonly accepted elements: Each of these elements provides a wide range of

78

to trade with those that best fit their ethos and businesses are also asking more probing questions of them. Significantly, payment performance can easily enhance or damage reputations.

Four commonly accepted elements of Corporate Social Responsibility

Marketplace The ways in which organisations trade both up and down supply chains can be leveraged to deliver significant social and environmental impact as well as enhance market positions. For example, long standing B4 member Blenheim Palace recently demonstrated its support of the recently established business Wonky Food, by including its products in its retail range and also providing on-going mentoring support. B4 has also supported Blenheim by providing Wonky Food with a complimentary B4 membership and exposure in the magazine, in addition to an Official Product Partner slot at BIO2018. Customers are becoming increasingly discerning about whom they buy from and why. At the other end of the scale, businesses are becoming more selective when it comes to their suppliers, choosing

B4 member, Oxford Bus Company, became the first Oxfordshire business to develop a communitybenefit renewables project with the Low Carbon Hub. Although this might be impractical for smaller businesses, Oxfordshire has a reputation for hosting hundreds of environmental charities, social enterprises and private sector organisations with which valuable partnerships and projects can be developed.

Workplace With fierce recruitment competition locally, staff and potential employees are becoming more demanding in terms of what they expect from employers and how they are looked after. Supported and promoted by B4 member Unipart, the Oxfordshire Workplace Wellbeing Network is growing to provide peer support for local businesses, reinforcing their position as employers of choice. There are also opportunities for employers to enhance the workplace and develop more diverse and inclusive workforces. A project supported by B4 www.b4-business.com

B4 csr member Allen Associates in association with Aspire Oxford recently hosted a well-attended employer conference around Inclusive Employment.

Community

Allen Associates staff support people who have overcome addiction at The Ley Community

Companies across Oxfordshire are making valuable contributions to local communities in support of Social Enterprises, charities, smaller community groups and schools. This is enhanced by the OxLEP’s Skills Team, which works with local schools, as well as responsible business groups such as Reciprocate and the ROBIN Network, both of which I am very proud to be associated with. Support from groups like these open up excellent opportunities for collaborative partnerships that can create powerful impact in local communities

Deborah Astles - Unipart Group

A perfect storm The national and local economic and social landscape has changed significantly and continues to do so. Despite a very strong local economy, we still have many challenging social and environmental issues before us at a time of reduced public spending and cuts in public services. The work and volunteering I undertake through Collaborent is aligned to my belief that these aren’t problems for central or local government to solve alone, nor should we expect charities to just step in. And it most certainly can’t be left to the private sector.

Grant Hayward

Richard Venables, Reciprocate Chair

The national and local economic and social landscape has changed significantly, and continues to do so. Despite a very strong local economy, we still have many challenging social and environmental issues at a time of reduced public spending and cuts in public services.

Grant Hayward - Collaborent

So, working with local businesses, including B4, I am helping businesses understand the crucial role they can play alongside and in collaboration with the public, voluntary and Social Enterprise sectors to open up the opportunities barely touched on here.

B4 Values B4 is for business people who understand that success isn’t achieved by a ‘quick win’ or with a hard-sell approach. The B4 community encourages authentic ethos, collaboration and reciprocation and the B4 Value statement will underline the importance of trust, integrity and honesty to the B4 community. The ways in which members trade, look after their workforce, the environment and local communities are fundamental to their success as well as all stakeholders. No matter what size your business is and whether you are already engaged in some of these opportunities, there is so much more you can do that can also enhance your business. It’s my view that if businesses don’t operate in these ways, they will fall behind and may even cease to exist. I am delighted to be presenting on this topic at BIO 2018 and hope to see you at that session. I will also be delving deeper into this topic over the next few issues of B4 as it unveils its exciting new initiatives including B4 Values, I will be drawing inspiration from B4 members, so if you have an interesting and related example, or would just like to know more or connect, please contact me at grant@collaborent.co.uk.

news Corporate supporters Spotlight:

Polythene UK This month we are focusing on one of Sobell’s great corporate supporters, Polythene UK. They are an independent broker of polythene packaging. Founded in 2007, this award-winning company currently employs 26 staff and has an impressive turnover of £11 million. Since 2009 this very committed local business has raised over £20,000 for Sobell House, fantastic! James Woollard is Managing Director at Polythene UK 1. Please tell B4 just why you decided to support Sobell House and be part of The 40 Club? 9 years ago when Sobell House first approached us, we decided to help because of the amazing work they do for all sorts of people in difficult circumstances. Over the years we have continued to help as much as we can. The opportunity to become part of The 40 Club has meant that we can fully commit to something that is both challenging and engaging. 2. Do you think your great commitment to a number of charities has helped your business more positively within Oxfordshire? We report all of our fund raising activities and results in our monthly newsletter. Although our charitable activities are not a direct driver for new business, Polythene UK have become well known, both in the county and nationally, for being a pro-active supporter of many local charities – which is nice. Additionally working with and supporting Sobell House, as part of our corporate and social responsibility initiatives, has helped us achieve recognition in several business awards including being announced winners of the 2015 IoD National Director of the Year Awards, Chairman’s Award for CSR. 3. How important is it for you and your company to get involved with a wellknown local charity?

www.b4-business.com

It is incredibly important. We sponsor many local, national and international charities and organisations as well as providing support for schools, colleges and enterprise initiatives. To ‘give something back’ has always been and will continue to be part of our core values. Generally if we are asked for help or support we will say yes! 4. How have your staff risen to the challenge? They’ve all bought into it and really enjoyed it. I think that as a team, we’ve all tried really hard to come up with idea’s to help achieve our targets – and we’ve all had a lot of fun on the way.

fundraising campaigns like The 40 Club. Being a member of The 40 Club is a two-way process. It helps to build team spirit by incorporating charitable giving into the organization. It gives access to new audiences through Sobell House that will grow your business contacts at The 40 Club networking events. And last but not least, your business is not only seen but will be recognised as a caring local company. If you are interested in forming a partnership with Sobell House and would like to know more please contact Tim Wraith their Corporate Partnerships Manager.

Each member of staff is encouraged to attend the many fund raising events we support – even if they aren’t directly taking part they often come along in support of the others, there is generally a real family atmosphere at these events which are greatly enjoyed by everyone. 5. Would you say your staff are more motivated and productive as a direct result of working with Sobell House? I would like to think so yes. 6. And lastly, what message would you like to give to other businesses considering supporting Sobell House? I am always surprised, how few companies get involved with local charities. I only ever seem to see the same faces at all of the fundraising events. I would strongly encourage ALL Oxfordshire based business to join in – especially the business focused

HEADWAY

OXFORDSHIRE

Headway Oxfordshire is a local charity that offers a holistic package of support services to those affected by brain injury across Oxfordshire (individuals, families and carers). Written by: Jamie Miller, CEO - Headway Oxfordshire

Brain injuries can be acquired in many ways, such as: Traumatic brain injury (actual trauma to the head and brain through an accident or assault etc), Stroke, Infection, Poisoning or Tumour. Brain injury can be acquired at any stage of life and the consequences can be highly complex and life changing to individuals and their loved ones. Despite advances in medical science and treatment, the numbers of brain injuries in the UK (and Oxfordshire) continue to rise. Overall, numbers have risen by 10% since 2006 with female head injury admissions haven risen 24%. The incidence of stroke in the over 50’s is also continuing to rise. Please take a moment to consider…Your brain is YOU! It’s everything about you, your present, your past and your future. Your ability to live and breathe, to think, communicate, plan, remember, feel and physically navigate your way through the world. Now imagine (like 4000 people admitted to Oxfordshire hospitals every year with a brain injury) that you acquired an injury to YOUR brain. The complex consequences can effect any and all aspects of yours and your loved ones lives. Carers often describe having been in mourning for the person they have lost but still having the huge stress of caring for them 24/7. Headway Oxfordshire provides the very vital services and support required to support people on their recovery journey. Our services are designed to meet many of the common needs associated with the condition and most importantly, at a time that is right for the www.b4-business.com

individual concerned. We provide: • A Community Support Service that in-reaches into hospitals and supports people at the initial stages of injury. Support to understand diagnosis and prognosis, to prepare for discharge from hospital and practical issues like finance and adjustments to their home etc. Most importantly, we are there to offer emotional support at the most traumatic time in their lives. Once at home the team continues to offer support to maximise rehabilitation opportunities and to gain as much independence as possible whilst adapting to a changed life. • In our Activity and Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) service users can access our specialist equipment and engage in neuro physiotherapy, assisted exercise, complimentary therapies and a vast variety of positive activities (such as Art, Music, Cookery etc) designed to aid rehabilitation, socialisation and prevent deterioration. • Our Personal Assistant Service supports people in their own homes and communities by providing a “professional friend” to enable people to engage with everyday activities and tasks. From paying bills and shopping, to enjoying life through social activities.

How can you help us to help others? As an independent local charity, we are only able to continue to provide our essential services through

the generosity of grant givers and donations from our community. As such, we strive to develop mutually beneficial relationships and opportunities with our supporters. There are many ways in which we may be able to work together with you as an individual or a company, such as: • Taking on your own fundraising challenge or joining one of ours • Making us your charity of the year • Lending your skills as a volunteer in any areas of our organisation from driver to Trustee • Joining our social media network and help raise awareness • Offering opportunities for those with brain injury to work with your organisation • Considering opportunities to work together on specific projects • Become a “Friend of Headway Oxfordshire” • Sponsor an element of our service • Leave a gift in your will See what we do at www.headwayoxford.org.uk and help us to help others

STAR WARS, SECRETS OF THE EMPIRE

The VOID at Westfield, Stratford City

I hadn’t thought this one through very well had I! What was meant to be a belated 21st birthday treat for my son Ed (once a Star Wars fan, always a Star Wars fan), could have turned into a very expensive day out. However, I’d managed to book this unbelievable experience on one of only two days in the year when the shops were all shut… Easter Sunday! Genius! Seriously, what an incredible way to spend a Sunday morning. The VOID is a full sensory, immersive experience which you and three friends or family can enjoy by walking into real-time hyper-reality that combines interactive sets, real-time effects and amazing technology. Ed has always had a fascination with the Star Wars stormtroopers, ever since he was 6 and I think all of us have a soft spot for the white suited troops of the Galactic Empire. So once you’ve signed up to visit the molten planet of Mustafar to recover Imperial intelligence, one of the many friendly VOID staff on hand get you strapped in to your battle gear, complete with the all important helmet which makes www.b4-business.com

all the magic happen. You then step into the chamber ready to head to the frontline, put your helmet visor down and your family are all stormtroopers! It’s incredible….especially as everyone is to scale! Ed was huge and Abi was, well, not so huge. It was brilliant and great fun and Ed was in his element. They’d all been in before me with Ed’s girlfriend Beth, and I knew how much they had enjoyed it from the screams of joy that rose from the VOID structure and filled half of Westfield. But to experience it yourself is something else. We were soon walking a plank and being transported to face the real stormtroopers – we were simply going to fight disguised as stormtroopers. Before we could engage we had to grab our guns – real, as in we were actually carrying them, not part of the virtual reality – and then it was a case of opening fire! It was so realistic…you even feel a buzz when you’re hit! But don’t worry…there’s no real pain or skill required. Just bags of fun for everyone.

The VOID and ILMxLAB certainly deliver on their promise to bring the Star Wars universe to life. Book now at https://www.thevoid.com/dimensions/ starwars/secretsoftheempire

OXFORD CITY ROWING CLUB The City of Oxford Rowing Club is one of Oxford’s largest and most successful rowing clubs with membership open to all. The club is situated on a beautiful stretch of the River Thames known as the Isis, by Donnington Bridge in Oxford. With over 300 members, it has thriving men’s, women’s junior and adaptive squads, from beginners to elite. B4 met with club Chairman, Chris Platt, Men’s Senior Captain, Rupert Pye-Watson and Women’s Senior Captain, Louisa Taylor, ironically on the day of the Boat Race, to find out more about the Club and its plans for the future.

Chris Platt, Chairman “The rowing club was formed in 1968 following an amalgamation of two existing clubs, so it’s our 50th anniversary this year. I have rowed here since I was a kid so I’ve known the club practically all my life. My father, Bill Platt, was a founder member of the club when they amalgamated the two clubs, so I’ve effectively been a member since I was born! “The club is certainly a safe haven from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind - the rowing club has always been a great escape for people to forget their working lives and compete in a competitive sport which requires commitment and teamwork. You won’t get a better sport for teamwork than rowing - you’re only as strong as the weakest person in the crew. “We are very fortunate to have support from volunteers who are the lifeblood of the club. Our junior squads are thriving, we have an adaptive squad which I am very proud as not many clubs have managed that. We also have a strong men and women’s squad and also a masters rowing squad for women and men who might not have the time to compete due to other commitments.

to find out more – you can see more details on our website.”

Rupert Pye-Watson, Men’s Senior Captain “I started rowing when i was 16, so for about 20 years now. I got to grips with rowing at school and then took a rowing sabbatical for 9 years whilst I was in the army. I’m now a Project Manager working for Nationwide Building Society in Swindon. “The men’s squad is a really diverse group of guys from 18 year old students all the way through to late 30’s, all working towards the same goal and with the same ambitions. “The rowing season starts in earnest for senior level rowers around September and runs all the way through to the first week of July, which is Henley Royal Regatta, which is the key focus for our season. There are various events leading up to Henley, including Wallingford Head.

MOST ANNOYING MEMBER OF THE SQUAD? “I think most people would probably say myself!”

what would you say to attract people to the club? Rupert: “Give it a try. I know more people have tried and stuck with it than have given up. It’s quite addictive. It attracts people from all backgrounds, all types of jobs and all experience levels are always welcome.”

KEY BENEFITS OF ROWING? Louisa: “It’s great for routine and gives you a good structure to your day. It’s a great incentive to leave work and not sit at your desk or work late at night. It’s fantastic to be a part of a team, a different team to your work team. You learn from each other’s experiences and you all have that common goal to get across the line first.” Rupert: “Physically, people have a misconception of the sport – 80 to 90% of it is about lower body and back and only a tiny fraction is arms. The Olympians can make it look very easy but I can assure you it’s anything but! Every session is about trying to improve your stroke and it’s that striving to want to be better which is the thing we all have in common and is what drives us to train, train and train again.”

“Looking forward to the next 50 years, we need to invest in the club’s infrastructure and the boathouse building. We have a new bar franchise coming on board, which is exciting, with a lot of fresh ideas. The next phase is increasing our boat storage which is a much bigger project and will require in the region of £250,000 to complete. We will soon be looking for sponsorship and donations from local businesses to help fund this project.

Louisa Taylor, Women’s Senior Captain As for Rupert, we’ve got quite a diverse

squad with people from university to people in their 40’s and include post grad scientists, project managers and nutritionists.”

“Well it’s always funny when someone falls in! Having to do the walk of shame back up to the club can be very amusing. We’ve had people falling down the bank and slipping all the way down whilst everyone watches from the boat house – and nobody bothers to help! I think we must like seeing each other suffer …. on and off the water!”

“In terms of sponsors, we are proud to have Freeths Solicitors as our main sponsor who have been superb supporters of the club. We also have the Corporate Eights competition for local businesses to put in a crew and compete, which is hugely popular and vital for the club’s finances. It’s a great team building exercise for the teams that take part and they queue up to get involved.

WHO IS THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON YOU HAVE EITHER ROWED WITH OR AGAINST?

“We are always looking for new members and we run beginners classes every year for those wanting www.b4-business.com

“The women’s season is fairly similar to the men’s. We finish two weeks earlier with the pinnacle of the season at Henley Women’s Regatta.”

“Alice Roberts, who rows for the university blue boat today joined us as a junior and represented Oxford last year and is also representing Oxford again today.” Development of the club is important for you as you both have a responsibility to help develop the club. How do you encourage people to join and

OVER 2,000 BRAVE THE COLD TO RUN AT BLENHEIM Over 2,000 runners braved unseasonably cold conditions (in a big contrast to the heat last year) at Blenheim Palace for this year’s 7k fun run, sponsored by Freeths Solicitors.

The event, which comprises a children’s 1 mile and 4 miles run for buggies and wheelchairs alongside the main 7k, follows the trails and paths around the stunning grounds of the palace. Up to 100 local and national charities were represented by fundraising teams including for Restore, the Oxfordshire mental health charity which is celebrated 40 years this year with 40 runners on the team. To date the charity team has raised over £3,000 from the event with more to come. There were also big teams fundraising for local charities Helen & Douglas House and Sobell House. Jayne Attwood of JTAFIT in Carterton said: “Great day, good race, lots of fun fundraising had by all.” Matthew Saunders of the Riot Club also from Carterton said: “It was an awesome day! We all had a cracking day and look forward to the next. Our fundraising for Helen & Douglas House is currently at 2.5K.” Liz Hardiman ran the 7k for Great Ormond Street Hospital on behalf of a friend’s grandson who spent most of his 3 years at GOSH. The run was also part of her own fitness campaign, she said: “You can at any age or fitness level start running or become more healthy. I came very close to being diagnosed with an array of health issues relating to being obese and have completely changed my way of life. If I can encourage others to move more, eat healthy www.b4-business.com

and believe in themselves I’m going to help as much as I can. “ Caroline Cookson helped to organise Team ‘Run4Joyce’ who were raising money for the Neurology ICU at the John Radcliffe Hospital in the memory of their friend Joyce Carter. Joyce was a 46-year-old Flight Sergeant in the RAF who had recently been posted back to RAF Brize Norton and passed away following a sudden stroke in November last year. Caroline said: “As a close friendship group, we all wanted to do something positive in Joyce’s memory, to thank the Neuro ICU and which would allow them to continue to make a difference to families going through the toughest situations. “Joyce loved her family and friends, she enjoyed visiting Blenheim Palace and being active was an important part of her lifestyle - so running the Blenheim 7K / Kids 1 Mile on Sunday April 29th in her honour seemed a fitting tribute.” Team Run4Joyce raised over £3,000. Sarah Foster, Managing Partner of sponsor Freeths Solicitors said: “We really enjoy getting involved with this charitable event because it enables so many people to raise much needed funds for so many worthwhile charities. This is why we’re proud to be the main sponsor of the Blenheim 7k run for the sixth

consecutive year. On behalf of Freeths Solicitors, I want to say thank you to all of the runners that took part in the fun run. Your support is what makes this event the success that it is. I look forward to cheering on next year’s runners.”
