BLOXHAM SCHOOL WELCOME I am delighted to be the Headmaster of Bloxham, which is often described as one of Britain’s best smaller schools. Small we may be, but a visit here will prove to you that we have facilities to match most larger schools and ‘we punch far above our weight’ in areas such as academic value-added, sport, design and information technologies, art and music. Above all, we are a happy School where your sons and daughters will be well cared for. Our School is built around a strong and supportive pastoral and tutorial system which creates an environment where our pupils expect to do well – and they usually do! As one might expect from a Woodard School, Bloxham offers a supportive, caring and friendly co-educational environment where those with talent in any area are encouraged to contribute and excel. The School is predominantly boarding but with a strong day cohort many of whom convert to boarding as they move up the School. Weekly boarding is available to the Lower School pupils in a magnificent home, Park Close, where there is excellent accommodation for boys and girls. Bloxham attaches great importance to academic quality and success. A wide range of GCSE and A/AS level courses is offered. 98% of pupils go onto University after Bloxham. A new library opened in April 2006. This exciting and major new building features full ICT capabilities and fosters independent learning skills and to this end all Fourth Formers are given a laptop computer by the School. We hold Open Days in the Autumn and Spring but much prefer to welcome you here on a normal working day when you can spend some time viewing our campus and spending time with me discussing individual needs and interests. I look forward to meeting you.

Mark Allbrook Headmaster

ABOUT US One of the nicest things said about our pupils by those that know us is that Bloxhamists are ‘doers’ and grounded individuals. We believe that this stems from our guiding principles in which we focus on the achievements and well-being of the individual. We believe in respect and responsibility and see ourselves as ‘a family’. We aim to create self-confidence which never becomes arrogance whilst emphasising the importance of the world beyond school. We are fortunate to be served by some excellent teachers and support staff. Our award winning catering department ensures that Bloxham pupils are well nourished and can enjoy a healthy and balanced diet.

FACILITIES Bloxham enjoys fantastic facilities many of which have been provided or upgraded recently. Boarding houses are comfortably appointed with a good mix of social and living accommodation and the Lower School boarding house at Park Close offers a homely environment for the youngest weekly boarders. The Vallance Library opened in 2006 and is a wonderfully planned space which acts as a magnet for young learners and promotes independent learning. The old library has been re-worked into an attractive 6th Form Art studio and Music has benefited from a doubling of its space via an attractive new-build extension. Science and Technologies are also well served.

KEY FACTS | Bloxham is a small school (420 pupils) but one with excellent facilities | Co-educational education from 11-18 years of age | Day and flexible boarding opportunities to suit a family’s requirements | A dynamic school where individuals can develop their talents to the full

ST. CLARE’S OXFORD WELCOME St. Clare’s is an international college, founded in 1953, with a mission ‘To advance international education and understanding’, something it has been doing successfully ever since. The College embraces internationalism and academic excellence as core values. It is a coeducational day and residential college which has been offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma for thirty five years, longer than any other school or college in England. Students from 47 countries study at St. Clare’s including a significant number of local day students. The atmosphere is informal and friendly with an equal emphasis on hard work and developing personal responsibility. The College has excellent academic results. In June 2011, 99% of students passed the Diploma, compared with a worldwide pass rate of less than 80%. Three students obtained the perfect score of 45 points, achieved by only 103 students worldwide. Using the government league tables published in January 2011, St. Clare’s was ranked the best performing sixth form college in Oxfordshire and the 11th best independent sixth form in England. Most students are enrolled for the full IB Diploma. St. Clare’s has an especially wide range of subjects on offer at Higher and Standard level and, in addition, currently teaches 28 different languages. For students not ready to begin the IB Diploma, a one-year Pre-IB course is offered. There is an extensive programme of social, cultural and sporting activities and students are encouraged to take full advantage of the opportunities that Oxford provides. In 2009 the Ofsted inspection of pastoral care and boarding at St. Clare’s was rated Outstanding, an accolade received by only 10% of boarding schools and colleges in the UK. Entry is based on academic results, interview and confidential school report. There is a competitive scholarship and bursary programme awarded by examination, interview and group exercises.

6 | OXFORDSHIRE EDUCATION 2012

ABOUT US St. Clare’s is a college rather than a school. When it was founded, a decision was made to educate young adults aged 15 to 18 years of age. Students are encouraged to be independent and self-sufficient which makes them exceptionally well-prepared for university. The College has a relaxed and informal atmosphere balanced by a strong emphasis on work. Students are motivated and enjoy the many opportunities which St. Clare’s offers. The deliberately small size of the College means that there is a particularly strong sense of community. For parents and students who are not familiar with comparing the IB points system with A Level grades, the following equivalences apply: 45 points equals more than 5 x A* at A Level; 40 points is the equivalent of 4 x A* at A Level and 35 points equals 3 x A* at A Level. In 2011, students at St. Clare’s achieved an average of 36 points, i.e. the average result in A Level terms was the equivalent of over 3 x A* at A Level.

FACILITIES St. Clare’s is located in the beautiful North Oxford Conservation Area. It owns 28 large Victorian and Edwardian houses to which purpose-built facilities have been added. These include a library building with over 35,000 volumes, an IT suite and a Careers and Higher Education Information Centre, three newly refurbished science laboratories, art and music studios, dining room and the popular Sugar House café. Students live in College houses close to the central campus under the care of residential staff. Wifi access is available throughout the College including all boarding houses.

ACTIVITIES The College offers a huge range of activities which include: rugby, football, volleyball, basketball, rock-climbing, badminton, Pilates, table tennis, rowing, aero-boxing, salsa, charity workshop volunteers, Model United Nations, chess, Invisible Children Charity, KEEN, College magazine, yoga, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, visiting the elderly, Zumba, digital photography, International Affairs Society, learning a new musical instrument and many more activities.

OUR LADY’S ABINGDON WELCOME Welcome to OLA! Founded in 1860, we are a leading Catholic, coeducational day school for boys and girls aged 3 – 18. Choosing a school – the right school, is one of the most important decisions a parent will make for their child. Parents often ask what is so special about OLA and what makes it different from other schools. My reply is that we view every pupil as unique; valued as an individual, but also part of a family. It is my belief that every boy and girl has a unique talent and it is our responsibility to help discover and develop this talent. School days have a powerful influence on future success in life and we believe an OLA education can give you the best start. We are very much a family school, educating brothers and sisters from Nursery through to Sixth Form. We are justly proud of our outstanding academic performance. A Level results this year saw 87% of students gaining A*- B and 57% gaining A*- A. The vast majority of our Sixth Formers obtain a place at their first choice university including Oxford and Cambridge and other Russell Group universities. Our pupils not only achieve excellent academic qualifications, but they also enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities and receive outstanding pastoral care. However successful you are in life, to be truly happy and fulfilled you need to have successful relationships with others. We aim to equip pupils with the skills and abilities necessary for adult life in the 21st century – academic, extra-curricular and spiritual. You are warmly invited to visit and experience for yourself the unique atmosphere of what we believe is an exceptional school. I look forward to meeting you soon.

OXFORD INTERNATIONAL STUDY CENTRE WELCOME Carolyn Llewelyn is proud to be the founder principal of Oxford International Study Centre, which is situated in the very centre of Oxford, surrounded by the Colleges of the University. Many of the college’s programmes, including the summer course, are held in the University, where OISC has excellent connections. Since graduating at Oxford in Languages, Carolyn has worked in international education for over twenty years. During the summer vacation and autumn term we shall be arranging preparatory programmes for candidates for Oxford and Cambridge and other leading universities. They are suitable for those applying for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The seminars will be led by experienced Oxford and Cambridge tutors, including people from admissions in colleges of the University. The College welcomes students, young and not so young, from all over the world. OISC prides itself on its flexibility…..programmes are designed around the individual student. Some students work in small groups, others prefer individual tuition, and yet others combine the two systems. For those students whose first language is not English a support programme in EFL is provided. In addition to year round courses for GCSE and ALevel, OISC runs highly successful short courses in the school holidays…..not only for British exams, but also for IB and American exams. Over twenty subjects are offered, and a high level of pastoral care for students is provided, including personal tutors and regular reports.

OXFORDSHIRE EDUCATION 2012 | 11

D'OVERBROECK'S COLLEGE WELCOME I have had the privilege of being the Principal at d'Overbroeck's for the past fifteen years. I have never felt more enthusiastic about, or more proud of our educational provision than I do now. There have, over the years, been two important trends in d'Overbroeck's: we have developed and evolved enormously as a school; and yet something at the core of what we do has remained remarkably constant. This combination accounts for the energy and vibrancy on which students and parents frequently comment and which, to my mind, is the essence of this place. Having started life as a sixth form college, d'Overbroeck's today is a thriving 11 – 18 co-educational school with a roll of around 440 students. Pupils joining us at 11 and at 13 start at Leckford Place (the 11 – 16 part of d'Overbroeck's) and progress through to the Sixth Form post GCSE. We are unusual in having a Sixth Form that is considerably larger than our lower years so, in addition to our own Year 11s progressing through, we have a substantial cohort of new students (90 or so) who join us directly into the Sixth Form each year. That which has remained constant over the years is our ethos, which is single-mindedly built around people. This is a lively, close-knit community in which we want students to feel engaged, happy and at ease with themselves and with their school environment; and in which relationships between staff and students are ‘comfortable’ and built far more on mutual respect and a sense of shared purpose than on imposed formality. Central to all this is a distinctive educational approach honed over the years, fantastic students and a team of talented and enormously committed staff.

Sami Cohen Principal

12 | OXFORDSHIRE EDUCATION 2012

ABOUT US The Good Schools Guide describes d'Overbroeck's as ‘a place of energy and laughter, of single-minded determination among students to do the best they can’. This is a pleasing description which captures both the vibrancy of the environment and the high level of achievement within it. Our students consistently achieve excellent results at GCSE and A level; we have a strong record of university entry, including some 10% of leavers going to Oxford or Cambridge in most years; our pastoral care has been deemed ‘outstanding’ in successive ISI inspections; art, music and drama are very strong; and we offer a rich and wide ranging programme of sport and activities throughout.

FACILITIES A distinctive feature here is that our Sixth Form has its own teaching buildings which are physically separate (though not geographically too distant) from our lower years at Leckford Place. Music and Drama facilities are common to both but science laboratories, art studios, library and common room facilities are separate, thus enabling us to gear the day-today environment to the needs of each age group. We have the use of some excellent sports facilities, including an indoor gym, outdoor tennis courts, football, rugby and netball pitches, an Astroturf pitch for hockey, etc. These are a short distance away from our teaching buildings and transport is provided by coach and minibus.

KEY FACTS | Our maximum class size is 15 up to GCSE and 10 in the Sixth Form | We offer a wide range of subjects at AS / A level and an unusual degree of flexibility in subject choice | Scholarships: Academic, Art, Music, Drama, Environmental Awareness and (new this year) the sixth form Enterprise Award | Our Sixth Formers have the opportunity to take the AQA Baccalaureate alongside their A level subjects if they wish to
