The pandemic has profoundly impacted every aspect of Crescent life. There have been repeated school closures, abrupt shifts from in-person to remote learning, severe limitations on teams and clubs and strict restrictions on gathering as a community, to name a few. In short, we travelled to where we had never been before.

And yet, our faculty rose to the challenge, delivering innovative curricula that engaged the boys and propelled their learning. Students showed resilience and positivity in the face of adversity. Parents expressed gratitude for all that the school did to support their boys.

We found new ways to come together. Aided by technology, our boys continued to learn with their teachers, parents gathered in regular Coffee and Conversation and education events, and new families met through online cooking classes. The CPA hosted virtual socials and a mother-son graduation luncheon, and we were able to host inperson graduation ceremonies for our Grade 12s. Despite economic uncertainty, the generosity of our community was unprecedented. The 2020/2021 year was the single strongest fundraising year in the school’s history. The Parent Annual Giving program raised $1.28 million, a record-high. The same can be said for major gifts, with $19.8 million in new gifts pledged, including a transformational $12 million donation from alumnus Ming Wai Lau ‘97. His gift enabled Crescent to finally realize our dream to acquire the Bob Rumball Centre property – a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity that will forever shape the future of our school.

We continued to move forward with our strategic priorities, including capital enhancements and endowment expansion. Innes Field was resurfaced with a state-of-the-art multi-purpose artificial surface with ground anchors to secure an air-supported sports dome, extending field use during the winter months. And because of the ongoing support for student financial assistance, 43 worthy boys of promise received a Crescent education, a 200% increase in just the past eight years. In these difficult times, we have much to celebrate. I am grateful to have travelled alongside you in service of Crescent’s mission to build Men of Character from Boys of Promise.

While tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the generosity of giving through charitable gifts that provide the much-needed support for new facilities, enhancements to our signature academic programs and additional funds for student financial assistance. We are truly proud of the rich heritage of generosity that has existed at Crescent School for decades, in support of our sons’ educational experience.

All of the facilities on campus that our boys benefit from each and every day are the direct result of the generosity of current and past parents, alumni and grandparents. They have supported the School to ensure we can evolve with the changing needs of a future Crescent education. I feel deeply that it is the responsibility of every generation of Crescent families to do the same, and support the School for current and future boys of promise.

Despite the uncertainty of the COVID-19 global pandemic during 2020/2021, our community showed an outstanding philanthropic commitment to our School. Our Parent Annual Giving program, which raised almost $1.3 million – a record amount – is the most successful program in Canada. Our community continues to be generous, resulting in a total of $19.8 million in new pledge commitments including a transformative commitment of $12 million from alumnus Ming Wai Lau ’97 which helped make the acquisition of The Rumball Centre possible. At this time, the majority of our major gift and Parent Annual Giving fundraising is directed towards needs-based student financial assistance, the Master Campus Plan and Rumball. We are grateful to all of our donors for their thoughtful and ongoing support of this school that means so much to all of us.

I am so very proud to be part of the Crescent School community, which year after year continues to inspire us all with its generosity, encouragement, commitment and passion for the School’s mission. I am also privileged to serve on the Board of Governors and as Chair of the Development Committee, both of which are comprised of committed and hard-working volunteers, and I thank each of them for their efforts over the last year.

The 2020/2021 year was another success for our Crescent Alumni Executive, of which I had the privilege of chairing. The Alumni Executive is an outstanding group of committed alumni who volunteer their time to chair and assist in the running and implementation of our varied alumni events and programs. Without their service, we could not offer the programs that we do. During the pandemic, we were forced to move all our alumni programs online and were ultimately presented with a number of unique ways to engage our alumni globally in ways we’ve never been able to do before.

Highlights of the 2020/2021 school year include:

j Having 19 alumni write handwritten notes to the grads that were mailed to their home

• Increasing engagement on the Crescent Alumni Network platform with 989 alumni on the platform using it to engage and connect with one another

As at June 30, 2021, The Crescent School Foundation achieved a year-end value of $20.8 million million, its highest year-end closing. Surpassing the $20 million mark is a huge milestone and worth celebrating. New donations from our generous donors were directed towards student financial assistance, Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund, robotics and technology, student health & wellbeing, and local outreach.

I would like to offer a special thank you to parents of the Class of 2021 who established The Rob Cranston & Don Morrison Class of 2021 Scholarship in honour of their sons’ graduation and two beloved teachers upon their retirement. These parents raised $107,000 toward a goal of $80,000 in support of endowed student financial assistance. Well done!

In 2020/2021, The Foundation disbursed over $564,000 in support of various School programs with approximately 76% directed to support of needs-based student financial assistance. This annual disbursement continues in perpetuity ensuring critical funding to key programmatic areas that directly benefit our boys.

The Foundation’s Directors review quarterly and annual financials, and establish and review investment and disbursement policies. In addition, the Foundation Board conducts annual reviews of the firms we employ to manage the endowment, in an effort to preserve and grow the Foundation’s assets in the long term.

Endowment donations are incredibly important to ensure the sustainability of the School’s programs and we take our stewardship responsibility in this regard very seriously. We hope we will continue to receive your trust and confidence in the years ahead. As always, I encourage you to consider supporting The Foundation and, in particular, student financial assistance. This is a School funding priority that truly changes lives. All donations made to The Crescent School Foundation receive a charitable gift receipt for tax purposes. This was my last year as Chair of The Crescent School Foundation. The reins have been passed over to the capable hands of Lesley Marks P’21, ’23 who I know will do a wonderful job stewarding The Foundation to great successes. I’d like to thank the Advancement and Finance Offices at Crescent School for their hard work on behalf of The Foundation, and my fellow Directors for their diligence and commitment to preserving and growing the endowment.

As you have read in the messages from Headmaster Michael Fellin and Development Committee Chair George Mavroudis, Crescent has just completed the most successful fundraising year in its 108-year history. While we acknowledge with gratitude that Ming Wai Lau ‘97 has provided transformational support via his $12 million pledge, we are humbled by the response from all of our constituency groups to our request for support. I thought I might briefly summarize my perspective by suggesting responses to the following three questions related to the why, what and how.

Why are people so supportive of Crescent School? Staff giving is strong, matching that of parents with 3 of 4 donating because Crescent offers an unparalleled work environment. Crescent offers high expectations and high support of remarkable educators. Alumni reflect upon the educational and character foundations that Crescent provided them and give back to say thank you and to pay it forward for the next generation of their Crescent brothers. Parents see the positive impact that dedicated Crescent staff have upon their sons, offering both challenge and support, and are giving back in record numbers. They are excited about the vision for the School and donate for the direct benefit of their sons as well as future Crescent boys. There is always an element of ‘paying it forward’ at schools like Crescent. Parents acknowledge that the exceptional facilities and programs that are available today for their sons were provided by a previous generation of donors. What are the funding priorities that donors are supporting? In addition to supporting the most successful Parent Annual Giving program in Canada, families that have additional capacity and inclination to support Crescent are donating their funds to two priorities: Endowment in support of student financial assistance, and Phase One of Crescent’s Master Campus Plan. Just a decade ago Crescent’s Endowment was under $5 million and only a handful of financial assistance recipients were in the School. Today the endowment exceeds $20 million, we are distributing more than $1.2 million in support annually and there are 43 remarkable boys in the School who would not have the financial means to attend. We are delivering on our promise to have Crescent School ‘be more reflective of the Toronto of today.’ We hope to have our endowment exceed $25 million and enrol up to 60 boys on financial assistance in the next 5 years. How can I help? This is a phrase that is uttered hundreds of times daily within the School, and our Alumni and parents are responding in kind. By volunteering their time, advice and yes, their financial resources to Crescent, all Crescent family members are strengthening their partnership with the School to ensure that the Crescent of tomorrow will be even better than the School of today.

We are so grateful to our remarkable Development Committee led by George Mavroudis as well as all of those who choose to allocate their philanthropic support to Crescent School.
