The Trade Mission attracted 26 Zimbabwean companies from several sectors including the Engineering, Construction, Clothing, Processed foods and Furniture. The Mission was a followup to a similar one organised by ZimTrade in 2012. The Provincial Delegate of the Investment Promotion Centre (CPI) in Tete, Dr. Leonardo Junior, challenged companies to be innovative and take advantage of the numerous opportunities that this fast growing market presents. ZimTrade Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Sithembile Pilime, urged Zimbabwean companies to leverage on the distance advantage between the two countries as well as make use of the trade agreements such as the SADC Trade Protocol and the Zimbabwe-Mozambique Bilateral Trade Agreement, that offer preferential market access to qualifying products. Aveng-Infraset Sales and Marketing Manager, Mr. Christopher Mafuka, gave an inspiring testimonial. He spoke of endurance and patience as key success factors when exploring newly emerging markets. Mr. Mafuka who has now successfully established in Tete, managed to penetrate the market after participating in the 2012 ZimTrade-led Trade Mission.

Dignitaries from the Tete Province who assisted in the preparations for, as well as attended the event, included the President of the Provincial Council of Tete Enterprises (CEP), Mr. Carlos Cardoso; Tete Provincial Director of Industry and Commerce, Dr. Jose Antonio Gero; Provincial Delegate of the Investment Promotion Centre (CPI), Dr. Leonardo Junior; and, Provincial Director of Customs, Anselmo Fumo. Also present at this event was Zimbabwe’s Trade Promotion Officer at the Consulate of the Republic of Zimbabwe in Beira, Ms Peggy Mabambe. Over 70 delegates from the Tete business community attended the event.

Global Leaders to Focus on Boosting SME Competitiveness

lobal leaders will focus on boosting SME competitiveness at the World Export Development Forum (WEDF) to be held in Kigali from 15 – 17 September 2014. The forum will be held under the theme “Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Creating jobs through trade”. This is the first time that the International Trade Centre (ITC), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year (2014), will bring its flagship event to Africa. The Government of Rwanda through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) will host the conference. More than 500 representatives of government, the private sector and trade
support institutions will contribute to the global debate on achieving inclusive, sustainable development through entrepreneurship, employment and economic growth. The urgent need to create trade and employment opportunities by increasing the competitiveness of SMEs will be at the core of the discussions. The plenary sessions will focus on topics such as: unlocking SME competitiveness by creating an enabling business environment; boosting SME participation in international trade through trade facilitation and regional integration; capitalising on South-South trade opportunities and attracting investments; tapping trade opportunities for SMEs in tourism; and, buying goods and services from women-owned businesses.
This year, WEDF will be held in conjunction with the International Trade Centre’s (ITC’s) Women Vendors Exhibition and Forum, which matches women in business with international buyers. WEDF parallel sessions will focus on: impact investing; electronic solutions for SME export growth; sustainability standards; branding and marketing; business incubators in developing countries; and, the expansion of trade in services.
