The Indian sugar industry second large agro industry Located in the rural India. The Indian sugar has a turnover of Rs.500 billion per annum & it contributes almost Rs.22.5 billion to the central & state as tax, and excise duty every year. It is the second largest agro-processing industry in the country after cotton textiles. With 453 operating sugar mills in different part of the country, Indian sugar industry has been a focal point for a socio-economic development in the rural areas. About 50 million sugarcane farmers & a large number of agricultural labors are involved in sugarcane cultivation & ancillary activities, constituting 7.5 % of the rural population. Besides, the industry provides employment to about 2 million skilled/semi-skilled workers & others mostly from the rural areas. The industry not only generates power for its own requirement but surplus power for export to the grid based on by-product-bagasse. It also produces alcohol, which is used for industrial &portable uses, & can be used to manufacture ethanol, an ecology friendly &renewable fuel for blending with petrol. The sugar industry in the country uses only sugarcane as input; hence Sugar Company’s have been established in large sugarcane growing states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu & Andhra Pradesh. In the year 200506 these six states contributed more than 85 % of total sugar production in the country;

In addition, about Rs.600 crores is realized by the State Governments annually through purchase tax and cane. At the prevailing sugarcane price, the total sugar cane produced in the country value at about Rs.24000 crores per year. World Sugar Trade: Word trade in raw sugar is typically around 22 MMT and white sugar around 16 MMT. Brazil is the largest importer, followed by EU, Thailand, Australia and Cuba. The largest importers are Russia, Indonesia, UK, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Sugar Prices: World sugar prices fell steadily from 1994-1995 till 1998-1999 and have been almost stable at those levels. The trend seems to have now reversed and refined sugar prices have increased by 30% in the last 5 quarters – from 9.16 cents per pound in January, 2004 to 12.02 cents in March,2005 (Source: USDA Foreign Agriculture Services). Job satisfaction” at “ R.S.S.K” Sugarcane occupies about 2.7% of the total cultivated area and it is one of the most important cash crops in the country. The area under sugarcane gradually increased from 2.7 million hectares in 1980-81 to 4.3 million hectares in 2002-03, mainly because of much larger diversion of land from other crops to sugarcane by the farmers for economic reasons. The sugarcane area, however, declined in the year 2003-04 to 3.9 million hectares and to 3.7 million hectares in 2004-05, mainly due to drought and pest attacks. From a level of 154 MMT in 1980-1981, the sugarcane production increased to 241 MMT in 1990-1991 and further to 296 MMT in 20002001. Since then, it has been hovering around 300 MMT until last year. In the season 2003-2004, however, sugarcane production declined to 236 MMT mainly due to drought and pest attacks. Not only sugarcane acreage and sugarcane production has been increasing, even drawl of sugarcane by the sugar industry has also been increasing over the years. In India, sugarcane is utilized by sugar mills as well as by traditional sweeteners like guru and khandsari producers. However, the diversion of sugarcane to khandsari is lower in states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, as compared to Northern states like UP.

molasses, the

installed capacity were later on increased to 27,000 Liters. Which was further expanded 54,000 Liters. Of Rectified Spirit per day commencing the enhanced capacity production during the year 1982 consuming the entire quantity of molasses produced by the Sugar Mill. The average recovery of Spirit per MT of molasses is 265 Liters. This distillery Unit established at a cost of 202.76 lakhs, is now contributing its revenue of Rs.18.00 Crores per annum to the Sugar Industry. This unit celebrating its Silver Jubilee in the year 1997 is now marching towards the Golden Jubilee Celebration. .SPENT

RECOVERY AEROBIC COMPOST. Can molasses based distilleries are the major water polluting industry .The spent wash generated from the distillation of fermented wash is highly acidic with high concentration of organics. A waste water management practice with resource to recovery implemented in our distillery. Spent wash is utilized for aerobic compost of press mud, a by-product from the cane based sugar mill for production of manure. •

Considering the problems in the treatment and deposal distillery spent wash on land or into surface wear, spent wash management option with recourse to zero effluent discharge seems to be the most appropriate. Distillery spent wash contains potassium, phosphates and sulphate in high concentrations and in addition, calcium, nitrogen, iron sodium and chlorides which as the essential nutrients of plants. Similarly, presumed, a waste product generated from sugar mill also contains nitrogen phosphorus, potassium, and calcium besides organic matter and traces of sulphur.

ETHANOL The factory also has planned to install Ethanol Plant at the factory site having capacity of 30,000 LPD for which a detailed Project report is under the progress

JOB SATISFACTION

INTRODUCTION: Several years ago the only compensation that most employees received from their jobs was a pay cheques. As time passed this changed, as employees began to demand and receive more from their jobs. Today’s employees are receiving a variety of compensation,, including health care, retirement, and numerous other benefits and programmes. However, one thing that employee of two generation ago and today have in common in them is that, their jobs constitute a major part of their lives, and are one of the greater sources of personal pleaser and pain. While jobs can be satisfying in some regards, with positive feeling of accomplishments and purpose, they can also be source of negative feelings. DEFINITION: The term job satisfaction refers to ‘an individuals general attitude towards his or her job. A person with a high level of jobs satisfaction holds positive attitude about the jobs, while a person who is dissatisfaction with his or her jobs holds negative attitude towards the jobs. Job satisfaction consists of the feelings and attitude of a person with respect to his or her job. All aspects of particular jobs, good or bad, positive or negative, is likely to contribute to the development of feelings of satisfaction (or dissatisfaction). FACTORS OF THE JOB SATISFACTION: There are different factors on which job satisfaction depends. Important are as discussed here. •

Personal factors

Factors inherent in job

Babasabpatilfreepptmba.com

Page 55

Job satisfaction” at “ R.S.S.K” •

Factors controlled by the management

1] Personal factors: They include employee’s sex, education, age, marital status and their personal characteristics, family background, socio-economic background and the like. 2] factors inherent in job: Instead of being guided by their co-worker and supervision, the skilled employees would rather like to be guided by their own inclination to choose jobs in consideration of ‘what they have to do’. These factors included: the worker itself, condition, influence of internal and external environment on the job which are uncontrolled by the management etc. 3] factors controlled by the management: They include the nature of supervision, job security, kind of work group, wage rate, promotional opportunities transfer policy, duration of work and sense of responsibilities. All these factors greatly influence the employees. Their presence in the organization motivation the employees and provides a sense of job satisfaction. THE IMPORTANCE OF JOB SATISFACTION. When allowed to operate freely, job satisfaction can contribute substantially to organizational effectiveness. It can contribute to productive output in the from of high quantity and quality of product or services, as well as to organizational maintenance objective as represented by low absenteeism and turnover. Yet in great many instances aspect of the individual, the organization, or the environment constrain the satisfaction productivity relationship to the point where its practical importance is minimal. A very dissatisfied employee may work hard, produce, be present everyday, and stay with the co; for many tears if there is no place else to go, the person desperately needs a jobs and there is a real prospect of being fired should good performance not be maintained.

Job satisfaction” at “ R.S.S.K” Ultimately, stress may catch up with such a person and signs of poor corporate citizenship may appear, but such denials of natural satisfaction-output patterns cans maintain themselves for long periods. Hence job satisfaction may will be more important to the individual than to the employing organization. In American society, responsibility for attaining job satisfaction usually assigned individual rather than to the organization. Individuals

to the

can change jobs, thereby

obtaining more satisfying work.
