POWER READERS The Power Readers Scheme we’re following in library lessons is proving a great success. It’s substantially increased reading levels for Shells, 2nds and 3rds which is great news! We had the first Bronze Award Ceremony for Shells on 29th November 2011. The second presentation for Shells took place on 27th March 2012. Mr Watson presented pupils with their certificates and Miss Ewart spoke to the group to encourage and congratulate them. We are pleased to be able to assist in this great initiative introduced by Second in English, Miss Ewart. Well done to everyone who has completed their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards respectively!

BOOK FAIR The Library hosted a Scholastic Book Fair from 29th November to 2nd December. This is an annual event and this year’s Fair was extremely well supported. We had record sales this year and so have gained + £200 worth of books for the library. Well done everyone!

To celebrate World Book Day the library are running a design a bookmark competition alongside the National Book Tokens competition. The winning design will be made into a bookmark available in the school library. Both competitions require you to design a bookmark with a literary theme (only one design needed). All entries should be produced on A4 paper, portrait format, 160mm x 42mm. On the back of each entry must be Pupils Name and form. Entry forms available from the Library!

WORLD BOOK DAY World Book Day was on 1st March 2012. £1 book vouchers were issued to all Forms to buy selected free books or as a voucher towards any book from participating bookstores.

To celebrate this event the Library promoted the National Book Tokens competition to design a bookmark. The winning design will be made into a bookmark and distributed to bookshops nationwide – plus prizes of National Book Tokens for the school, pupil and teacher. Alongside this we decided to run our own ‘in house’ competition using pupils’ original designs. The winning design will be made into a bookmark available in the Library. LIBRARY BOOK CLUB

Booked Up was launched in 2007 and is a scheme to provide a free book to all Year 7 (in our case Shell) pupils. During the first four years of the programme Booked Up has given a free book to over 2.5 million children. Booked Up’s goal is to encourage reading for pleasure and independent choice. Students choose their free book from a list of specially selected titles. The programme is run by Booktrust, an independent charity dedicated to encouraging people of all ages and cultures to engage with books. Booked Up is generously supported by children’s book publishers and funded by the Department for Education. Our Shells were delighted to receive their free book selection in November, after the excitement of browsing and choosing which book they would like during their initial library lessons at the start of Term.

‘To

learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark’ Victor Hugo, Les Miserables.

TOP READERS On Tuesday 27th March the Top Library Readers were presented with awards in a ceremony led by Miss Ewart second in English. The certificates and prizes were presented by the Headmaster Mr Watson. Congratulations to Harsimran Sansoy and Cherie Ng (Top Shell Girl Reader Awards); Matthew Needham and Martin McKenna (Top Shell Boy Reader Awards); Sarai Wallace (Award for Best Breadth of Reading); Leshanth Uthayanan (Award for Volunteering); and Shamayel Sayeed, Mathumye Sachchin, Edward Guest, Krina Mistry and Deepra Sinha (Enthusiastic Reader Awards). OPENING HOURS

Monday to Friday: 8.15am to 5.00pm www.bablakeschoollibrary.co.uk

A reminder that Bablake Book Club meets fortnightly on Wednesdays in the Library Alcove from 1.00 pm to 1.30 pm . We read approximately 4 books per term and at the end of term we have a book quiz and party to test our knowledge of that term’s most popular book. This term’s favourite book was The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins scoring a record breaking 9.75 out of 10! We are now eagerly awaiting the release of the film and look forward to comparing film to book.Other books read this term were: Withering Tights by Louise Rennison, People’s Republic by Robert Muchamore and Boys Don’t Cry by Malorie Blackman. We also write short reviews of the books which are displayed on the top of the fiction bookshelves in the Library. Read them and be inspired for your next book choice!

The Top Readers also gave a short talk on their favourite book or author. One of the observations in research carried out by the Department for Education into encouraging reading for pleasure states ‘43% will read something as a result of peer recommendation and 10% will read something if it is recommended by a teacher’. We hope that pupils will be

encouraged by their peers to read the vast array of books available in the Library. Reading is a wonderful pastime that can take you on a journey to all sorts of magical places and through experiences beyond your wildest dreams. It is also an essential learning tool that will help you to succeed in life. Become a reader in 2012!
