Spring 2013 Edition 3

Book Worm Bookbuzz is a national programme run by Booktrust and supported by children’s book publishers. This scheme has replaced ‘Booked Up’ which was also run by Booktrust and supported by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. The aim of this new reading programme from Booktrust is to ‘support schools to encourage reading for pleasure, independent choice and develop a whole school reading culture’. Shells and all other Year 7 pupils across the country have benefited from this excellent scheme again this year. All pupils in Shells will be offered a book of their choice to keep, free of charge, from a selection of 17 titles chosen by a panel of experts. The scheme has altered slightly this year, as we were required to make a part payment for the books. Our experience is that this is a worthwhile investment, so we have decided to continue with the scheme at Bablake. The arrival of the books during the Autumn Term caused a real buzz of excitement among Shells! Interestingly one of the books most popular with our Shells this year, ‘The Messenger Bird’ by Ruth Eastham, has the Coventry Blitz as a backdrop to the story and the Cathedral ruins are featured on the front cover.

WORLD BOOK DAY

It was World Book Day on Thursday 7th March 2013. £1 book vouchers were given out to every pupil in School to buy selected free books or as a voucher towards any book from participating bookstores. To celebrate this event the Library promoted National Book Tokens competition to design a bookmark. Alongside this we decided to run our own ‘in house’ competition using pupils’ original designs. The winning design will be made into a bookmark available in the Library. We also featured book related quizzes, word searches and reading sessions in the Library on the day!

BOX TOPS FOR BOOKS

If you are a Nestlé cereal eater, please save the tokens on the cereal boxes. We are collecting the tokens to exchange for books. The promotion runs until March 31st so we will be collecting them till then. We are offering the Form bringing most tokens in a box of chocolates. So get collecting and bring them to the Library!

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

The Library hosted a Scholastic Book Fair from 26th November to 1st December. This is an annual event and this year’s Fair was very well supported. Sales were initially a little lower than last year so we decided to open at the Christmas Fayre, which proved a great success – thanks to Mrs Brett in Pupil Services for the suggestion and Mr Mellers as Event Organiser. Commission on sales this year allowed us + £160 worth of books for the library. Well done everyone!
