MYTON HOSPICE

SHOEBOX APPEAL

HEADMASTER’S COMMENTS

Myton Hospice has to raise £3,000,000 to make a hospice in Coventry, so a man called Nigel Adams, a fundraiser, came to the School Council meeting. After listening to him, we all agreed that we were going to help Myton Hospice. We took part in the Feeling Great Appeal. Some of the activities we did were jumping up and down one hundred times and smiling - a bit tricky!!!

This year we decided to take part in the Shoebox Appeal again. Everyone in the school was handed a leaflet with instructions telling you what to put in a shoebox, like, for example, girls would like jewellery or a nice soft toy and boys would like a toy or a key ring. You wrap your box with Christmas paper and fill it with whatever you want for a girl or boy and give it in at school. We have managed to fill a fantastic FIFTY SIX shoeboxes between us.

The Christmas Fayre was a fine testament to the outstanding community spirit here at Bablake. From Santa’s bonhomie to the parent and pupil helpers, the goodwill and festive cheer was most heart-warming. Other highlights this term have been the enthusiastic start our many new pupils have made to their time here and some stunning triumphs on the sports field. There has been a great deal of hard work put in by all the staff and pupils and the results of this endeavour have been excellent. The Year 5 Tudor projects, for instance, are a testament to this dedication.

Now let me tell you about Monty. Monty is a teddy bear, he sits in Nigel’s car and sometimes he looks so sad. When Nigel came into our assembly he said, “When all the envelopes come in I will pick an envelope out of the bag and whoever’s name is on the envelope will get to keep Monty, and give him a good home.”

In poor countries around the world children will receive our gifts. These children do not have anyone to care for them or love them. Some of them might be sick or ill. Big trucks are loaded up and sent off to places such as Eastern Europe.

Altogether we have raised £2597:30. Nigel told us this is the most any school has ever raised so we really DO feel great now!

We hope that they will have a very Happy Christmas. Hopefully, too, it helps everyone at our school to remember that at Christmas not everyone is as lucky as we all are.

We sadly say goodbye this Christmas to Mrs Crisford and Mr Baker who have enhanced both the lives of our pupils and that of our school for many years. On behalf of everyone I would like to thank them for all their care and commitment. Best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous new year to you all. Neil Price

An Autumn Morning! The cool breeze brushes past the trees While the magic snowfall of leaves Flutters to the ground. As the gospel choir of birds sing With a sweetened voice, The wind whistles woefully Pulling the leaves along with it Crunch, crunch, crunch As the world wakes up to a crisp, Bright morning People explore the day With delight in their mind.

“Paws for Thought” Behind the long grassland, I lay like a statue Motionless and sleek, my ears like antennae Waiting for my prey, my breathing is deep and silent Like those who are waiting in a deep coma. My silk, furry body is full of strength and power The blood pumps through at an undetectable speed Suddenly, adrenalin surges through my skeleton Finally, the chase has suddenly begun. Like an eagle, soaring, high into the sky My paws push through the ground and ready To pounce, I leap into the air with a mighty push And draw my armour: my claws, clutching and clasping.

My whiskers are covered with decaying remains I slink off to my successful vantage point. I lay in the sun, preening and grooming My tongue rasping away at the caught feathers. WINTER Frost sparkles like millions of stars Creating a thin white carpet, Each snowflake floating down Is a tiny angel from heaven. Every berry is glazed with white icing, The ice covered duck-pond glistens In the bright morning light, A Winter Wonderland! The frost bites Like a hungry wolf tearing at your leg, Each snowflake falling down Sticks to your coat, then melts. Every blood-red berry clings to every prickly pine tree. WINTER MORNING Christmas cheer filled the garden As the snow sinks happily to the ground. The white frost huddles up around the trees Like a white, thick duvet. Shimmering snow surrounds the fluffy Ground falling repetitively. Patterns of snowflakes fall to the ground With a soft bump!

NETBALL The Bablake School netball teams have continued their earlier success into the second half of the Autumn Term. The U/11 “A” team secured an excellent 15-4 win over Bromsgrove Prep. Our U/11 “B” team defeated an Eversfield “A” team by 13-6 goals and the Bablake U10 team also recorded an impressive 10-4 victory. More recently our U/11 “B” team drew 11-11 against King Henry VIII “A” team and our promising U/10 team drew 4-4 against King Henry’s U/11 “B” team. A fine achievement!

CHESS Bablake Junior School has recently become involved in The Coventry Chess League. Pupils have been faced with secondary school opponents from both Bablake and King Henry VIII and are progressing well, with some players achieving notable victories over older pupils. Particular mention should go to Thomas Betts in Year 5 who has won two of his last three matches.

FOOTBALL

SCHOOL COUNCIL Mrs Francis is delighted to report that we now have a very lively and active School Council at Bablake Junior School. In September each class were asked to vote for a boy and a girl to represent them on the Council which would make a group of sixteen children altogether. Voting went very well and we were soon able to start meeting on Thursday lunchtimes. Ideas of topics we would like to discuss were soon flowing as Councillors brought along suggestions from their own classes and reported back after meetings each week. We have now chosen some of the Year 5 and 6 Councillors to organise activities including charity events. This has enabled us to support the Coventry Myton Hospice “Feeling Great” Appeal this term and we have so far raised over £2500 for this very worthwhile charity. Through the School Council it has been great to encourage pupils to think about how they can make a difference to both the life of our school and consider the needs of those less fortunate than us elsewhere. It has been tremendous to witness the children’s response to this new venture.

Bablake Junior School’s football teams continue to do well and the U/11 Boys achieved a notable result in winning the Princethorpe Trophy. The final was a tense affair, but the team eventually won thanks to a penalty shoot out. The U/11 Boys will shortly begin their defence of the Harry Shaw Cup. Special mention should be given to our U/10 Boys who, following their triumph in the Foremark Hall Tournament, recently pulled off a stunning victory against Arnold Lodge. The Aronld Lodge boys were undefeated in two and a half years; however, Bablake ended this remarkable run with a 5-4 win! The U/9 Team also continues to improve and has taken part in several matches against local independent schools. The U/8’s also look forward to their first matches next term.
